Key points for business owners 1.
Without a Will your entire estate, including your business assets, passes under the rules of intestacy. These rules were written a long time ago (around 1925) and are unlikely to reflect what you would really want. One example is that it’s highly unlikely that your spouse would inherit everything.
2.
With or without a Will, your Executors may need to be given powers to enable them to carry on your business. The law directs that any business owned by the deceased (other than limited companies) should be sold within 12 months.
3.
Use trusts to protect the business and massively reduce Inheritance Tax: there are major tax benefits to leaving your business in trust. This especially applies to businesses whose value is likely to grow in value. But trusts can also be used to ensure that the income from the business is protected for dependants such as children.
4.
Most businesses are owed money. Your executors need the power to be able to collect that money in. Without a will they only get that power when probate is obtained, which could be many months after the business owner’s death – and by which time the debtor could have disappeared.
5.
If you have shares in a limited company and you die, will your spouse want to be part of the new business? A cross option agreement ensures that the other shareholders are given first refusal to buy the shares; this is often supported by life insurance to ensure they have the money to do so.
6.
If you lose your mental capacity your family will have to apply to the Court of Protection to get control of your assets – this process might take at least 5 months, by which time there may be nothing left of your business. A Lasting Power of Attorney solves this problem by appointing people to manage your affairs in advance, before you lose your capacity.
We can advise on all these things and many more. Why not book a free consultation today to find out how these issues might affect you?

But the world of politics has been where the really dramatic changes are taking place. Everything unexpected that we thought wouldn’t happen has happened, from the Brexit vote to the election of Donald Trump to the Presidency of the USA.
Hope lies with you! Well, many of us can’t wait for 2016 to go; what a year it has been. Let’s start with music and the Arts. We have lost so many iconic people from David Bowie at the start of the year to Leonard Cohen recently.
Both geniuses – or should it be genii? Whatever, we can all agree that the music world is a lot poorer without them. Bowie was so creative, always pushing the boundaries. When I heard of Cohen’s passing, shortly after his beloved Marianne who died in August, I felt that I had lost a close friend; he was/is always there in the tough times, looking into my deepest feelings and saying, “hey, you’re not the only one”. From the Acting world, the loss that resonates most is Alan Rickman. He was born to be both the evil, so very nasty, Sherriff of Nottingham in ‘Robin Hood – Prince of Thieves’ and Severus Snape in the Harry Potter movies – “Always”. But one film he was in gets overlooked, too lightweight I suppose, but very funny, is “Galaxy Quest”. A straight take –off of ‘Star Trek’ that demonstrates Rickman’s comedy genius. I really recommend it. All left us too soon.
How could you inflict this man on the world, America? He is the supreme ego who will be the Supreme Commander with his fingers on all sorts of dangerous buttons as they are now in all sorts of murky pies.
And Brexit? This country is now in uncharted seas. The £ has fallen dramatically against almost all other currencies, imports will cost more, this Government is already spending tens of millions of our taxes preparing for it and Brexit hasn’t occurred yet. But there is hope. The growth of community groups that are fighting for their beliefs and to make life better for us ordinary folk is inspiring. Look at ACORN here in Bristol, only formed very recently, but already having an impact on Government on reductions in fees charged by Lettings Agents. Look at the resistance to FGM (Female Genital Mutilation) started here in Bristol by a group of schoolgirls and now spreading worldwide. There are lots of examples of goodness in the world. Be part of it in 2017. Happy Christmas Everyone Article by Eileen Means

Reverend Helen Johnson wishes everyone a happy Christmas I am thrilled to have joined the church community at St Mary’s, Shirehampton as their priest in charge, and I am equally delighted to have moved into Shirehampton Village with my family, and for us to be so welcomed by you all in such a warm way. It really is lovely to walk down the High Street and to have people stop and say hello, and I look forward to getting to know you all better over the coming months. It is such an significant time of year to be in the community of Shirehampton with Remembrance Sunday and Christmas events all happening around us, and I was so encouraged to see so many of you both at St Mary’s for our Remembrance Sunday service, and at the Cenotaph afterwards. The number of people in uniform, both young and old, is a reminder of all who have sacrificed so much for us, and we are incredibly grateful.
We look forward with excitement to our Advent and Christmas services at St Mary’s and we do hope to see you at the many services that will be happening during Advent, culminating in our Christmas Day service at 10am. We would love to see children and families at this, and at our Crib services leading up to Christmas. On Christmas Day any children (or those who are children at heart!) are welcome to bring their Christmas presents to church to ‘show and tell’. It will be a joyful, relaxed service lasting no more than about 45minutes so you’ll still be home in plenty of time to put the sprouts on! More details about all our Christmas services will be on a Christmas card coming through your letterbox shortly. In the meantime if you have any prayer requests or need someone to talk to I can be contacted on the following email: revhelenjohnson@btinternet.com. If you are interested in knowing more about Faith, Baptism, Weddings or Funerals at St Mary’s then please do get in touch. And so I pray that this Christmastime, wherever you are and whatever you are doing, you will know the peace of the Christ-child in your heart. Every blessing Rev Helen Johnson

Winter solstice is soon to be upon us, and this time it will be the oak king who will reign for the next six months. At this time, we have the shortest amount of daylight and the longest amount of darkness. The old name for this time is Yule. And the chocolate cake with the same name, represents the log of wood that was used as hearth fire. This was in the old days, when most houses had one large open fire, that was used as heating, as well as for cooking. The new Yule log, would be lit from the old one. Also our Ancestors lit fires to call the Sun back, to bring the light and warmth to help grow the new crops in the spring. It is interesting that Solstice is the 21st December and Christmas is the 25th, and this is the Son’s birth. Notice the spellings are different, and both are bringers of light. The Christmas tree, lights and other greenery symbolise everlasting life, and the lights are for the Solstice Sun's return . MUCH LOVE AND BLESSINGS, AND MAY PEACE AND LIGHT BE WITH YOU AT THIS BLESSED TIME. Blessings Marie, - Akasha Destiny

City and Port of Bristol Bowls Club The Annual General Meeting took place on Tuesday October 25th at the City and Port of Bristol Club. A generally successful season was reported by captains and club officers alike. Chairperson Lis Davies gave thanks to all who worked hard for the club during the year. David Hinksman will continue as President for a further two years. Lis Davies was re-elected as Chairperson, Heather Champion as Secretary and Bill Hatherall as Treasurer. Steve Tilly was re-elected as Fixtures Secretary. The Men’s League Captain will once again be Bill Hatherall with Charlie Maby as his Vice Captain. Jill Hinksman will be Ladies League and Ladies Friendly Captain. It was decided that there will be a week-end captain and vice-captain next season rather than having a captain for each day of the week-end. Lis Davies will be Captain and Ray Brocklesby Vice Captain. Ray Cook who was Saturday Captain last season will be Captain on Wednesdays. The club does remain active during the outdoor close season, with indoor bowls matches, social events and a winter bowling break.
Saturday November 5th saw six rinks of bowlers at the City and County Indoor Arena for the first of three indoor fixtures this winter. Playing against the Bristol Indoor Bowling Club is always a challenge and this year was no exception. Winning one rink and loosing the game overall it was no less an enjoyable afternoon and provided the opportunity for predominantly outdoor players to try the indoor game which is very different to bowling on grass. At the end of the game there was a meal, a drink and the chance to sit down with other bowlers and to share all that bowling has to offer. Sunday 6th November was the date for the first social event of the close season. Almost thirty bowlers and families gathered in the skittle alley at the City and Port of Bristol Club for a very enjoyable evening of skittles ---- with prizes. The next event will be one of last winter’s favourites ---- a Beetle Drive --- on Sunday December 4th. Always guaranteed to raise frustration levels and a few laughs it will start at 7.30pm, once again in the Skittle Alley. The Winter Bowling Break will be in Torquay, this year at the Toorak Hotel, at the end of January. Not only indoor bowling but time to enjoy all the hotel has to offer and to explore Torquay and the surrounding area.
For further information about the Bowling Club and its activities please call David Hinksman on 0117 9082713.

Yes – parking your car is getting harder! If you think parking your car is getting harder, you’re right – and it’s probably not your fault. While parking spaces have stayed the same size for 20 years, cars have widened by around 16% – making the average modern model two inches broader than the legal minimum space. And the squeeze is costing motorists an annual £500million in repairs to their paintwork. The size of the average car has grown as manufacturers strive to offer more interior space, comfort and often mandatory crash protection. As car park owners fit in as many minimum-size spaces as they can, more than ten million drivers a year are scuffing or scratching their cars. A study from Halfords and paint-renovation experts G3 Pro has found that two thirds then have to pay more than £50 in repairs. Car doors are the most likely part to be scraped, accounting for half of all reported damage. They are followed by bumpers (14%) and wing mirrors (13%).
A BMW spokesman said: 'The original 3 series of the 1970s and 80s is about the same size as today’s smaller 1 series.' The newest Volkswagen Golf – at 1799mm (5ft 11) – is now only a single millimetre narrower than the official minimum space, while the 1974 original had a width of around 5ft 2in (1587mm) and so had more than eight inches to spare. Even the latest compact Ford Focus – at around 6ft 1in with its wing-mirrors folded – is more than two inches wider than the official minimum. When it comes to a parking squeeze, experts say supermarkets were reported as the worst offenders followed by shopping centres. Critics say local authorities are making the spaces as tight as they are legally able and that the squeeze is causing strains and back injuries to motorists struggling to get out of tight and cramped spaces.
Yet Transport Department rules on the minimum size of parking spaces – at 5ft 11in (1.80m) – have not changed since 1994 and local council guidelines on off-street parking go back to the 1980s. Meanwhile, car manufacturers are trying to offer more interior space and comfort to drivers who are simultaneously getting taller and fater. Manufacturers have also needed more space to comply with EU safety standards. They say this entails changing the shape of the bonnet and the panels to create a crumple-zone as well as reinforcing the superstructure and adding more weight. Some popular models have increased in width by as much as a quarter over the past 25 years. The latest generation of the popular compact BMW 3 series – at just over 5ft 11 wide with its wing-mirrors folded – is wider than the minimum parking space and eight inches broader than the 1975 original. This means the average British car is now 2 inches wider than the Department for Transport's 5ft 11in (1.80m) minimum width for on-street parking bay spaces.
The Halfords research found supermarkets were regarded as the worst offenders, with 38% of drivers saying the spaces were too small, followed by shopping centres (29 ) and railway stations (18%). Halfords paint protection expert David Howells said: ‘The majority of drivers blamed their scratches on inconsiderate drivers parking too close to them, but our research shows that the size of parking spaces is leaving them little choice.' YES – PARKING YOUR CAR IS GETTING HARDER.

Here is what you can expect when caught for drinking and driving -
Please don’t drink and drive this Christmas Drink driving is one of the serious driving offence. If you drink and drive, not only are you jeopardising yourself, you are putting other road users at risk. There are 250 people died due to drink driving and 14% of road accidents were caused by drink driving in 2010. By drinking and driving on the road, you risk your life and those of your passengers and others life. Alcohol can affect your ability to drive, weight, age and body metabolism and increase your stress levels. If you are driving after drinking, the alertness and carefulness will be less and you have trouble to judge your speed and be slower to react to hazards.
minimum 12-month driving ban fine of up to £5,000 a criminal record. loosing a job possibility of receiving a community order drastic change in lifestyle when you get your license back, the motor insurance premiums will be higher.
If you are planning to drive then alcohol must be avoided. This can help to reduce the no. of persons who killed or injured every year in road accidents due to drink driving. So drive safely and safe your and others life. The drink driving law is complicated and given the severity of any potential punishment, expert assistance from a qualified solicitor should always be obtained. Many road users are confused by drink drive limits and alcohol levels. The drink drive limit: 35 microgram's of alcohol per 100 milliliters of breath 107 microgram's of alcohol per 100 milliliters of urine what 80 milligram's of alcohol in 100 milliliters of blood
So drink and drive, is really not worth the risk. Always follow the road rules and regulations. Never drive under the influence of alcohol. Most learner drivers prepare the questions just for passing the test and tend to forget once they pass their test. But remember the knowledge gained while preparing for theory test should be applied while using the road every time. DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE !! PLEASE STAY SAFE THIS FESTIVE SEASON
If you fail a roadside breath test, the police believe that you aren't fit to drive because of drinking and you'll be arrested and taken to a police station. You may be offered a place on rehabilitation courses. The course teaches you more about the effects of alcohol on driving. The period for which you're banned from driving will be reduced by up to a quarter, if you have successfully completed the course.

What Are The Benefits Of Purchasing An Electric Car Without a vehicle, traveling to such places as work, school or shopping centres can be impossible for many people today. However, with the prices of petrol skyrocketing everywhere, many people are looking for alternative solutions to petrol-fuelled vehicles. If car-pooling or buses are not an option, the perfect solution just might be an electricpowered car. An electric car is similar to a regular car except that an electric motor powers these cars rather than an internal-combustion engine. These cars use rechargeable battery packs that run the vehicles. Some cars, known as hybrids, run off both batteries and petrol. It is also possible for people to convert their existing cars to electric.
There are many benefits to owning and operating an electric car. First of all, consumers will save a lot of money on fuel costs. With today's economy, this is an extremely attractive feature. Since electric cars do not produce all of the toxic fumes that regular cars do, these cars are much safer for the environment than petrol-powered vehicles. Another great benefit of owning an electric car is that, in some cases, the government will offer consumers tax credits for driving them. In conclusion, there are many outstanding benefits of driving an electric car. The best thing about these cars is that they will save drivers a lot of money on petrol costs. They do not harm the environment as do petrol-powered cars making
Electric cars are not new, as some of the first vehicles were electric-powered. These cars began to gain popularity with the improvements in battery storage. Many people think electric cars are slow, but this is simply not true. As a matter of fact, many of the first electric cars made held records in speed and distance. Today, some of these cars can reach speeds of 130 mph. The high-quality batteries in these cars enable them to drive up to 250 miles on a single charge. Early batteries were only capable of up to 100 miles.
