Movie Previews For January While you might be tempted to take yourself to the gym or yoga class as a result of eating too much turkey, Cineworld are also giving you plenty of reasons to stay glued to your cinema seat. The new year brings with it lots of exciting big screen releases, and here is just a few of them. After movies like The Favourite, Welcome to Marwen, and The Front Runner start the year in style between January 1st and 11th respectively, it’s on the 18th that the third and final film in M. Night Shyamalan’s Unbreakable trilogy arrives. Glass picks up immediately after the events of Split, forcing James McAvoy’s Horde, Bruce Willis’ Overseer, and, of course, Samuel L. Jackson’s Mr Glass together for a different kind of superhero epic 20 years in the making! Then on the same day, Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie butt heads in Josie Rourke’s historical drama film, Mary Queen of Scots, which chronicles the 1569 conflict between the queens of England and Scotland. Expect plenty of intrigue, betrayal, drama, and more. Winding us down towards the end of the month just one week later on January 25th is A Dog’s Way Home, an endearing tale for all the family which follows one dog’s 400-mile journey to find its owner. If ever you wanted proof that dog really is man’s best friend, this might be it. Lastly don’t forget, Cineworld Bristol and Direct Local Bristol have teamed up to give readers a chance to win two free cinema tickets. Simply fill out the word search on tthe next page. January is filled with movies set to make waves this upcoming awards season. How many will you be watching at your local Cineworld?
Article by Aaron Potter who is a professional writer for Cineworld Bristol and places these articles in Direct Local each month to give you the public a choice of great movies to view at your local cinema.

Healthy Chicken jalfrezi Instead of calling the Indian takeaway, make your own easy chicken jalfrezi. This curry is also healthy with two of your 5-a-day and a dose of vitamin C
Ingredients For the sauce ½ large onion, roughly chopped 2 garlic cloves, chopped 1 green chilli, finely chopped vegetable oil, for frying 400g can plum tomatoes 1 tbsp ground coriander 1 tbsp ground cumin 1 tsp turmeric
For the meat & veg 2-3 chicken breasts, diced 1 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp ground coriander 1 tsp turmeric ½ large onion, sliced 1 red pepper, chopped 2 red chillies, finely chopped (optional) 2 tsp garam masala handful of fresh, chopped coriander leaves cooked basmati rice or naan bread to serve
Method
Take 2-3 diced chicken breasts and coat in 1 tsp cumin, 1 tsp coriander and 1 tsp turmeric then leave it to marinate in the fridge while you make the sauce. To make the sauce, fry ½ roughly chopped large onion, 2 chopped garlic cloves and 1 finely chopped green chilli in a large pan with a little vegetable oil, for around 5 mins, until browned. Add 300ml water to the onion mixture and simmer for around 20 minutes. Meanwhile, put a 400g can plum tomatoes in a food processor and give it a good whizz (aim for a smooth consistency). Heat another large pan and gently fry 1 tbsp coriander, 1 tbsp cumin and 1 tsp turmeric in a splash of oil for about a minute. Add the tomatoes to this pan and simmer for around 10 minutes. Next, whizz your onion mixture in the food processor and add it to the spiced tomato sauce. Season generously, stir, then simmer for 20 minutes. You can make large batches of this sauce and freeze it for later use. Fry the marinated chicken in vegetable oil and stir continuously. After a few minutes, turn down the heat and add the remaining ½ sliced onion, 1 chopped red pepper and 2 finely chopped red chillies. Stir until the onions and pepper soften. Add the sauce you prepared earlier to the cooked chicken and simmer for around 10-20 minutes, adding a splash of water if it gets too thick. Just before you dish it up, stir in 2 tsp garam masala and handful of chopped coriander leaves. Serve with basmati rice or naan bread.

Your Garden In January The garden in January needs to be prepared for all sorts of weather and if you’ve been following our advice over the last few months your hard work is done for now. Most plants are dormant this month as they sleep through the cold weather, but there are still a few things to do in the garden. Spring is just around the corner and work can be done to prepare for the warmth of the new season. When its not too cold bed and borders can be dug over and lawn edges can be repaired and re-shaped. Don’t forget to keep feeding the birds, as food is scare for them over the winter.
Feed the birds
Natural food sources for birds are in short supply during the winter. Give them a helping hand by putting food for them. Keep food topped up but not full all the time – little and often is best.
Plant of the month: Helleborus Why should you plant them? Popular because they flower in the cold winter and early spring, Hellebores herald the start of the New Year bringing a touch of colour to the garden, commonly known as ‘Christmas Roses’ they are easy to grow and very hardy. They produce attractive flowers and their leaves create a perfect evergreen backdrop to spring flowering bulbs. How should you plant them?
3 Essential gardening jobs for fJanuary Protect plants January is known for cold frosts and bitter winds so plants will need protecting. If you haven’t already done so, ensure protective fleece is in place on tender plants over-wintering outdoors. Lift containers up onto pot feet – if water isn’t draining away the soil can become waterlogged. Wet compost can rot roots and cause pots to crack in frost. Remove snow from tree and shrub branches by knocking with a broom. Even a small amount of snow can add a lot of weight toe branches, causing them to snap. Dig over bare ground Run a fork through your vegetable patch or flowerbeds. This will help to aerate – getting air into the soil is important because plant roots need oxygen. Choose a dry day when the soil isn’t too wet. Don’t break your back breaking down large lumps of soil. Keeping them can help air circulate and any later frost will break them up.
18
Plant in shady herbaceous borders and the areas between deciduous shrubs to give an early splash of colour. Happy in dappled shade they should be planted in rich, heavy soil that won’t dry out in the summer. Ideal planting companions include Snowdrops, Primrose, Cornus and Mahonia

City & Port of Bristol Bowls Club The Annual Presentation Evening and Dinner is always a sparkling occasion, marking achievements from the season past and bringing bowlers, family and friends together in pleasant surroundings to celebrate it. This year’s event was at the City and Port of Bristol Social and Sports Club on Friday November 23rd and it was enjoyed by forty five people. An excellent three course meal preceded the presentation of trophies to winners and runners up from the 2018 season club competitions, Club League and Club Cup. One trophy that is not presented to a winner is the Wooden Spoon. The team finishing the season bottom of the Monday Night League has the dubious honour of receiving it and looking after it for twelve months. This year’s recipients were Hits and Misses. One bowler was very prominent throughout the presentations --- Ken Davies won, either singularly, as part of a pair, triple or member of a team all that it was possible to win ----a unique achievement in the clubs history. Other individual winners were --- Julie Looker in the Ladies Four Wood Singles and David Hinksman in a new competition, the Presidents Cup which is played between the Ladies and the Men’s Club Champion from the previous season. Prior to the presentations, the President made special mention of Ken Davis’s great achievement and also paid tribute to everyone who had entered competitions in the 2018 seasons --- without entries there would be no winners and runners-up.
22
Presentations were made by Dee Crawley, Lorraine Holmes and David Hinksman. The highly enjoyable evening was organised by Gill Hinksman with help from Dee Crawley and Lis Davies who once again produced an excellent programme, complete with pictures, for everyone. Quiz Night on December 9th saw six teams of four try to answer eighty questions, in eight categories and with the added bonus of a joker which teams could use once to double their points on a chosen category. The winning team with 76 points out of a possible 90 was ---- The Famous Four ---- Shirley Callaghan, Dennis Gazzard, Gill and David Hinksman. An excellent quiz was devised and presented by Gordon Dimond. The next Sunday night social event will be on January 6th. Indoor bowling is back on Saturday 19th January ---- once again at the City and County Indoor Arena, this time against Begbrook Green. This is another opportunity for members who are not indoor players to try playing on what is a very different surface to grass. Some club bowlers already bowl regularly indoors but for those who do not --- this is the chance. There will be further opportunity on March 2nd and the Winter Bowling Break, once again in Torquay, and also in March, includes four games on the hotels bowling arena ---- and lots more to enjoy within the hotel complex and the surrounding area. For further information about the club and its year round activities please contact David Hinksman on 0117 9082713
