Editors words Well folks we are half way through the year.. June is looking to be a glorious month of local events like the celebration of a century of Sea Mills 4th June and The Goram fair on the 6th June. Lets also not forget Fathers Day on Sunday 16th June A good time to say thank you to your dad for all of the wonderful things they have done for you this year or this could be a good time to remember a father thats passed away with some flowers etc. The month of June was also chosen for LGBT Pride month to commemorate the Stonewall riots, which occurred at the end of June 1969. As a result, many pride events are held during this month to recognize the impact LGBT people have had in the Uk and world wide. Are you hosting an event this year? if so please get in touch with us at info@directlocalonline.com and we will be more than happy to publicise it on our local events page in our magazine(subject to space available ) Finally I think we will all be glad when this Brexit lark is over and done with and we can get back to some normality.

Councillors Column - Jo Sergeant I love being a councillor and was honoured to be elected to represent the ward of Avonmouth & Lawrence Weston in 2016. However there’s no doubt it is a complex and stressful role. Ward-based work includes individual casework, working with community groups and supporting community projects. My ward is by far the largest in Bristol – there is a lot more ground to cover than the inner Bristol wards . It also includes Shirehampton and part of Sea Mills/Coombe Dingle, with a total of over 21,000 residents. The ward includes a port, a stately home, three (formerly four) branch libraries, wind turbines and a solar farm, a community farm (with pigs), a grade II listed iron bridge (still awaiting repair following being hit by a unidentified truck), a park & ride, parts of the M5 and M49, a municipal tip and a large industrial area, including sites doing waste treatment for the whole of the West of England. Each village has its own community and identity. Sea Mills has the added complication of being split across two wards. I represent people on the north side of Sylvan Way and those across the road are in Stoke Bishop ward! Despite their differences, there are many common problems in the four villages. A lack of affordable housing is one I hear about all the time. Other frequently heard concerns include fly-tipping and other forms of anti-social behaviour.

6

Many of these problems could be resolved more efficiently if it weren’t for the huge reduction in government funding – a loss of 60 pence in every pound since 2010 (even though council tax has had to rise for most and Bristol residents are not paying any less income tax!) The council has to constantly find ways to do more with far less and has done well considering this. As councillors, we are the voice of our residents and will raise your concerns with relevant council officers, as well as to the Mayor and Cabinet where appropriate. At City Hall I represent the ward and my party by sitting on various committees, including scrutiny and planning. These have a city-wide brief, as do my responsibilities as a member. However the experiences of my ward residents form a part of my contribution to these committees. There is also Full Council, the most important of which is the budget-setting meeting each February. I hold regular surgeries in different locations across the ward. They are on Friday mornings, twice a month (details on Bristol City Council’s website or my Facebook page). I can also be reached by email, phone and social media. For residents who prefer to meet in person but can’t do Friday mornings, I’m happy to meet at a more convenient day/time for them. I can be contacted on 07584 370416 cllr.jo.sergeant@bristol.gov.uk @joshop68 (twitter) \\ /ALWLabourCouncillors (Facebook)

Amaretti &Ricotta Cream

Finding the perfect Father’s Day gift can often be tricky, so why not give the gift of a delicious home-cooked treat? Janice Young, who runs local Slimming World groups in Sea Mills and Patchway says: “With special occasions like Father’s Day where you really want to go the extra mile for your Dad who means so much and who is also trying to stay on track with his weight-loss journey, you might find yourself struggling for ideas.

“However, at Slimming World, you never have to go hungry. That’s the beauty of the Food Optimising eating plan – nothing is off limits and you can still enjoy your favourite foods and reach your dream weight. So this year, you can still show your dad just how much you care by surprising him with one of these delicious Slimming World desserts he can enjoy.” Happy Fathers Day !

Serves 4 Ready in 10 minutes Ingredients 350g strawberries, chopped into small chunks Finely grated zest of ½ small orange 1 tbsp orange liqueur, such as Cointreau 3 level tbsp sweetener granules 100g ricotta cheese 300g plain quark ½ tsp ground cinnamon 4 amaretti biscuits

Method Put the strawberries in a bowl with the orange zest, orange liqueur and 1 level tbsp sweetener. Stir together gently and set aside. Mix the ricotta, quark, cinnamon and remaining sweetener together in another bowl. Put the amaretti biscuits into a sealable food bag and give them a really good bash with a rolling pin. Spoon half of the strawberry mixture into 4 glass tumblers and top with most of the ricotta mixture. Add the rest of the strawberries then add a final dollop of the ricotta and quark and sprinkle the crushed amaretti on top. Serve straight away before the biscuits go soft!

June is full of Marvel, science fiction & animation Across the Universe this month..

Dark Phoenix

Regardless of the types of movie you tend to enjoy, odds are that June will offer you more than enough reason to visit your local Cineworld. Whether you’re into mind-wiping secret agencies, talking toys, superhero epics or alternate worlds, here’s just a taste on what’s hitting the big screen. Kicking us off on the 5th June is the next (and potentially last?) entry into Fox’s X-Men franchise, Dark Phoenix, which dedicates full focus to the Jean Grey plotline we originally saw in X-Men: The Last Stand. Sophie Turner, James McAvoy and more return for this galactic clash of good vs evil.

Men in Black: International

The following Friday sees the return of everyone’s favourite alien investigation agency, with Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson teaming up for Men in Black: International. A series of alien attacks are happening around the globe, but is this part of an invasion? Next up on 21st June is Toy Story 4, which continues the adventure of Woody, Buzz and the gang, who are having to look out for Bonnie’s favourite makeshift new toy Forky. He’s on the loose in a carnival, where there’s plenty of more toys to make friends with. Lastly is Danny Boyle’s Yesterday on 28th June, a movie that asks the question: In a world without the Beatles would you write their beloved repertoire and take credit? Either way, protagonist Jack must learn that there are more important things than fame.

Toy Story 4

The fun doesn’t stop there as Cineworld Bristol and Direct Local Magazine are giving readers a chance to win 2 free cinema tickets. Simply fill out the next page word search. Are you sitting comfortably? You will be when visiting Cineworld Bristol this June!

City & Port of Bristol Bowls Club

The opening month of the 2019 season saw success in Mixed Friendly games, a remarkable win for the Men’s League Team and a titanic battle between two lady bowlers that ended in victory for Julie Looker over Lindsay Collin by the narrowest of margins. The first game of the Men’s League season was against St. Andrews C on April 25th. Due to illness and other circumstances City and Port were two players short and therefore only able to field one complete rink. The other two rinks played with three and as a result lost 25% of their score at the end of the game. A really tough ask to win a game in that situation but the game was won thanks to a great performance by the one complete rink who won by enough to cancel out the loss on the other two rinks and six of the ten points were earned to start the season on a positive note. Then --having lost at Bristol on May 9th there was a big comeback the following week with a win on two rinks and a win overall against Knowle C to take eight of the ten points available.

Lindsay Collin has in the past won the Champion of Champions Competition and reached a National Final --- a formidable opponent. But Julie Looker was not fazed by reputation and the game was close from start to finish with never more than four shots between the players. With 21 shots as the winning target the lead changed hands several time until the score reached 20-20 --- one more shot to win it --- what a finish to a game ---- who’s wood would be the winner? When all eight woods had been bowled it was close and a measure was needed to decide and ---- it was Julies!! What a game and – what a result. Julie will now play Christine Batt of Henleaze in the second round and once again she has a home draw.

18

Ken Davies was drawn at home to Chris Blake of Redland Green in the men’s Champion of Champions competition. In the match, played on May 14th there was little between the two for much of the game. But the visiting player, playing long jacks throughout, eventually pulled away and won by 2 1 shots to 13.

Just four teams are playing in the Club League this season and last year’s league and cup winners, Exiles are not one of them. Early front runners are last year’s league runners up, Nomads. But there is a long way to go and the other three teams Marvels, A.N.Other and Hits and Misses will no doubt be challenging at some stage in the season. The Ladies League team has started the season picking up points in the first three games but not yet registering a win. But --- there are eleven games remaining and also the Top Club and Inter Club Competitions to be played. Away from the green, on Sunday 16th June at 7.30pm there will be a chance to see and listen to the David Salt Big Band, lead by Andrew Champion in the Ballroom at the City and Port of Bristol Club. This promises to be a great night for which tickets are already on sale. Bowling is the Sport for All and the club is offering the chance for anybody to come along and try it free of charge on Tuesday evenings from 6pm. For further information about this or about the club in general please call David Hinksman on 0117 9082713.

Your Garden In June

Come June, its pretty safe to say that the risk of frost is behind us – summer is on its way and it’s time to make sure the garden is in good shape for the summer months. The sun is shining, the birds are singing and the garden is bursting into life. This makes June a particularly busy month for the green-fingered among us with lots of planting, pruning, maintenance and weeding to do done. All our hard work is sure to be worth the effort though as we sit back and admire the onset of summer in our garden.

Plant of the month: Rose

The essential gardening jobs for June

Plant baskets and containers Now the risk of morning frost has passed, its time to plant up your containers, hanging baskets and planters. If you already had them growing in the greenhouse, or hardening off outside during the day, then It’s now safe to move them out to their summer position – choosing a sunny spot will ensure you get the best from them. Trim any excess growth to maintain shape and deadhead regularly to encourage flower growth. Water at least once a day or more frequently when it’s hot dry and windy. Regular feeding – once per week in the summer – will also help your plants to thrive. Mow lawns once a week The lawn will be growing fast now and will continue to do so throughout the summer, so a good weekly cut is essential to keep it looking neat and tidy. To make sure your lawn looks its best for summer, apply a spring fertiliser onto established lawns now.

20

A good feed and a regular close cut will encourage extra growth making your lawn thick and lush. Don’t forget to reduce cutting frequency and raise mower blades if we have a drought.

Why should you plant them? Roses suit all kinds of gardens –they come in huge variety of colours, shapes and scents. They can be grown in beds, borders and containers and can be grown up walls, fences and trellis.

Care for your roses June is traditionally the month when roses are at their peak. You will need to keep an eye out for black spots and aphid attacks. Both of these will need treating immediately to ensure that too much damage doesn’t occur. Black spot is a serious disease for roses caused by a fungus which infects the leaves and reduces plant vigour, and should be treated at first sign of infection with a fungicide. Green fly are sapsucking creatures that can alter the growth of roses, also decreasing their vigour. Treat roses that are being attacked by aphids with an insecticide.

How should you plant them? Roses grown in containers can be planted all year round – check the label when buying though as their preferred spot and conditions will vary depending on the type. Dig a hole roughly twice the size of the root ball to a spade’s depth, dig in a good quality compost and fork in a general fertiliser.

Deadhead any faded rose blooms to encourage fresh buds to grow and apply a rose fertiliser after the first flowering.

Plant the rose to the same depth as it was in the container, firm down and water well. Apply a rose fertiliser every spring for amazing displays of colour.

Caught by the pension tax trap?

Those looking to cash in part, or all, of their personal pension need to check they don’t pay too much tax. Pension freedom rules allow anyone aged 55 or over to access their personal pension funds, there are complex rules on how withdrawals are taxed. Problems can occur if you take a one-off lump sum – an ‘uncrystallised fund pension lump sum withdrawal’ (UFPLS) – perhaps to reinvest or to pay off debts. This differs from using a personal pension to provide a regular income, through a drawdown plan or annuity. Your pension provider will apply an emergency tax code, which assumes you are withdrawing the UFPLS on a monthly basis, unless it has an up-to date tax code for you. For example, if you take a UFPLS of £10,000 at the start of the tax year, HMRC may assume you will take an income of £120,000 across the year from your pension and tax you accordingly. If it is a one-off withdrawal, you are likely to pay too much tax.

Avoiding the charge As emergency tax codes are generally only applied the first-time people access their pension funds, one option is to make your first withdrawal a nominal amount, say £100. The emergency tax code is still applied, but this triggers HMRC to adjust your tax code and send an updated version to your pension provider. Once the new code has been issued, any further, larger withdrawals are taxed correctly. You may be able to claim a rebate, either through your tax return at the end of the tax year, or HMRC if you need the rebate more quickly. If you are planning to withdraw a lump sum from your pension contact Bristol & West financial services. The Financial Conduct Authority does not regulate tax advice. Levels and bases of taxation and tax reliefs are subject to change and their value depends on individual circumstances. Tax laws can change.

Sea Mills - Centenary Celebrations

Did you know that the Sea Mills estate is now 100 years old? The oak tree in Sea Mills Square was planted on 4th June 1919 by the Lady Mayoress, appropriately called Emily Twiggs to celebrate the start of building. The estate was designed as a garden suburb with the aspiration to provide improved housing conditions and help address the shortage of housing after the first world war. Lots of the families moving in were those of returning WW1 troops. This year we will be celebrating the beginnings of the estate, there will be a “Birthday Party for the Tree” on 4th June at 10am, followed by a weekend of events on 8th and 9th June. You might have noticed some changes happening with the old red phone box on Sea Mills Square. Local volunteers have been working hard to renovate it as a mini-museum which will be a feature of the area for at least a year, this will open at 10am on Saturday 8th June. The museum will be accompanied that weekend by a history trail around the estate where you will be able to find out more about the people that lived in Sea Mills up to 100 years ago.

26

Local people have been researching their homes and will be displaying what they have found out on boards outside their houses and many of the public buildings and spaces will be open for displays between 10-4pm over the weekend. You’ll be able to pick up a trail map in advance or on the day from the Cafe on the Square. Sea Mills Amateur Dramatics will also be presenting a performance “Sea Mills - a Centenary” at 4pm on Sunday and on Saturday there will be a special Shire Colts v Sea Mills Park (youth teams) football match on the Recreation Ground. Portway Park and Ride train station on track after planning permission granted. It is the first train station to be built in the city for more than 20 years. Plans to build this new railway station in Bristol is more than 20 years that has taken a huge step forward and now planning permission for the scheme has been granted. This new station will be built by the Portway Park and Ride site near Avonmouth, which will be costing around £2.23 million and will be the first one built since Filton Abbey Wood I 1996. It will be a new station on the Severn Beach Line – located between Avonmouth and Shirehampton. Planning permission for the new station was granted by Bristol City Council last month – but this project has been ongoing for months. It was one of the first transport projects to be approved by the West of England Combined Authority (Wca) in 2017. Network rail has been carrying out and survey to assess the development site next to the Park and Ride for the ground conditions. A single platform has been agreed to be built behind the park and ride and can finally begin. This single platform will be long enough for five cars trains and Network rail also plans to install a ticket machine at the station – something which is not available at other stations along the Severn Beach line. With the new station being built it is also including seven disabled parking spaces adjacent to the primary pedestrian access to the platform in the existing car park as well as cycle parking for 40 bicycles in two separate covered shelters. Bristol City Council has secured a substantial £1.67m from the government’s New Stations Funds to make this project happen after working with Network Rail on developing the project.

30

And the Weca – the body responsible for transport projects across the region – was also instrumental in getting the project started off the ground. Local spokesman said The new station is part of a plan to connect more communities to our railway network. It’s yet another sign of investment in the West of England and we allocated £553,000 to this project through our Local Growth Fund.” When the project was first announced a completion, date of 2019 was given. Direct Local has asked Network Rail if this is still the case. The scheme forms part of a long-term rail strategy for the city region through the MetroWest programme, including improved frequencies on the Severn Beach Line which will serve the station by 2020. Earlier this month the MetoWest project was given a huge boost after government transport chiefs confirmed millions in funding to re-open the Portishead rail line. Officially called MetroWest phase one, the Portishead to Bristol line is viewed as a vital to solving the congestion gridlock faced by thousands of motorists who battle to get in and out of the growing town each day. The town – which has seen its population grow massively over the last decade due to major development has often been described as the UK’s biggest car park. MetroWest phase 2 will see a section of line between Bristol Parkway and Henbury reopen and an increase in the number of services on the Yate corridor. New platforms will also be built at North Filton and Ashley Down as part of the project. Work is currently underway to open the Henbury Spur by 2021.
