But the most important date in April must be the 21st Easter Sunday where we get to eat lots of chocolate... No seriously its a time to reflect on Jesus Christ’s victory over death His resurrection symbolizes the eternal life that is granted to all who believe in Him. But mostly give lots of chocolate to our siblings :) Also this month is the beginning of the outdoor bowls season so don those whites and start winning! Either way April is proving to be a fun packed month for everyone young or old so go and enjoy it.. Disclaimer

Are you looking for a Micro-Volunteering Opportunity? Micro-volunteering is an opportunity to donate small chunks of your time without a long-term commitment! It allows you to fit volunteering in with a busy lifestyle and still feel positive about giving back to charity and your local community. Abi, Micro-Fundraising Volunteer, says “I signed up to micro-volunteer for Guide Dogs as it was exactly what I was looking for. I work and have a busy family life, so committing to lots of hours or going to meetings was not possible for me. Being able to donate just an hour or two every now and again at a local supermarket collection or event makes me feel I am really making a difference, even in a small way. I get to meet some amazing volunteers and learn about the work Guide Dogs does for the many blind people in our area. Knowing the huge difference guide dogs make in the lives of their owners is key to my continuing support and knowing that it is only fundraising and generous donations that keeps Guide Dogs alive and well.”
6
Tracey Wellingham, Community Fundraising Development Officer, says “We know that donating even just an hour of your time supports mental wellbeing and helps people feel that they are giving something back. We all live busy lives and we are so pleased to offer the opportunity in fundraising for Guide Dogs for people to fit us in when they can and still make a difference. By extending a collection by just a couple of hours can mean hundreds of pounds more raised to support people living with sight loss across the South West’’. Micro volunteering is also a great way to try out volunteering and get to know the charity and how it works to see if it fits with your personal goals and lifestyle. Lots of people who start out volunteering occasionally to fit in with a busy life often find they love it so much they cannot wait to take on more when they retire or their circumstances change. Whether someone has an hour a week, month or year, Guide Dogs community fundraising has something for anyone interested in getting involved. There are opportunities to microvolunteer across the Bristol, South Gloucestershire and Bath area. To apply email tracey.wellingham@ guidedogs.org.uk or call the local team on 0118 983 8722. For more information on all our volunteering opportunities go to www.guidedogs.org.uk to search for roles near you.

Local Business in Brislington reached 5 years old Briscycle ltd, Your local bicycle shop on Wick road is 5 years old (15th March) The shop started in 2014 as a true family business with my wife Julianna. We allowed the business to follow local demand since then and went with requests from our ever so faithful customers. We were initially focusing on saving iconic British bicycles. While the business changed a lot since, we still regularly work with our customers who commission us to work on Raleigh Choppers, Grifters or old Triumph ladies bikes to name a few. We have customers from as far as Devon, London who find us on the internet with their old inherited bicycles in the family alongside our local customers.
8
As time went by, we expanded the business with bike servicing, extensive selection of parts and accessories and we regularly update the appearance of our premises. We have a water cooler, coffee machine and a Chesterfield sofa in the shop to keep our customers entertained whilst their waiting to get their bicycles serviced. We also carry a good selection of second hand bikes that are serviced and sold with our 6 months warranty. The next task is upgrading the lighting in the shop and creating an outdoor seating area. We have free Wifi in the shop so we are looking to become a destination for some local bike rider groups. We are also currently sponsoring a local triathlete who is looking to qualify for Team GB this year. We are also the main technical support for Clifton College’s 2019 Electric Car Build. The business is not in the most prominent location, however with the 5 years of hard and much enjoyable work, we became a destination. If you have any issues with your bike, need a service, parts or accessories, please come to see us. Looking forward to seeing you all soon!

APRIL IS FULL OF BLOCK BUSTER MOVIES AT CINEWORLD April is when we can officially say that it’s getting dangerously close to summer blockbuster season – to the point that major superhero releases like Avengers: Endgame and Shazam! begin to creep in. It’s not just capes spandex April brings with it, however, but ancient demons and cowboys, too. Let’s dive in! Kicking us off on April 5th is an interesting double-bill, with Shazam! & The Sisters Brothers both hitting the silver screen. Shazam! looks set to answer a fabled question: what would a youngster do if they got superpowers? Whatever it is they will soon get put to the test, as the boy-turned man superhero is forced to square off against Dr. Thaddeus Savanna. Meanwhile, The Sisters Brothers takes us back to the Old West, where a gold prospector is chased by the infamous duo of assassins.
Shazam!
Then, a week later on April 11th, we return to the new iteration of Hellboy. This time played by Stranger Things’ David Harbour, the hell-born demon hunter will need to do all it takes to prevent Mila Jovovich’s evil blood queen from destroying the Earth. Finally, Earth’s mightiest heroes unite once more on April 25th in an attempt to reverse the effects of Thanos’ snap in Avengers: Endgame. But will they be more successful this time around? Lastly don’t forget, Cineworld Bristol and Direct Local Bristol have teamed up to give readers a chance to win two free cinema tickets. Simply fill out the next page word search. It doesn’t matter if the sun isn’t shining, the heavy-hitters are all coming to town. Just be sure you have your popcorn and ice blast in hand when you come to see them at Cineworld. Article by Aaron Potter who is a professional writer for Cineworld Bristol and places these articles in Direct Local each month to give you the public a choice of great movies to view at your local cinema.

Your Garden In April Spring should be well under way this month with daffodils in full flow, their bright flowers enough to cheer up any day. Blossom trees will be blooming and fresh growth will be appearing on plants everywhere. “April showers’ are common but don’t be deceived by sudden bursts of rainfall – you may need to start watering plants more regularly on dry, bright and windy days. With longer days and stronger sunshine growing conditions are continually improving and the warmer weather will give us all the opportunity to get busy in our gardens.
Care for your lawn The lawn will need regular mowing from now until autumn. Get some maintenance carried out to your lawn mower to ensure it stays in good running order – at the very least your mower blades should be newly sharpened ready for regular use. Keep the edges of the lawn tidy after mowing with a sharp pair of shears or a lawn edger. Don’t forget to give the lawn a spring feed after mowing if you haven’t got around to doing it yet. If a more drastic approach is needed to spruce up your lawn, sowing seeds for new lawns or over seeding dead patches can be carried out from mid-April onwards.
Plant of the month: Rhododendron
3 Essential gardening jobs for March Sow hardy annuals Hardy annuals are plants that can be sown from seed in the open ground. Get them off to an early start by sowing in pots or modules. Modular trays are also handy for sowing summer bedding plants such as marigolds, lobelia and petunias. Label each seed tray and once they are growing put them outside when the weather is warm day and night. Support climbers Climbing plants should be growing rapidly now, so will need ample support for new growth. Extend or replace trellis as necessary or add more wire to archers and tripods. New shoots will need to be gently encouraged sideways as they grow. This will send vital growth hormones doing the length of the shoot rather than just to the tip and so will encourage flowering all over the plant. The rest of the garden will also be growing well now, so if you have been putting off carrying out any major pruning then now is the time to bite the bullet and get it done. Trees, shrubs and hedges should be cut back now before birds begin to nest.
18
Why should you plant them? Ancient Greek meaning “Rose tree’ the rhododendron family includes azaleas. These stunning shrubs flower in all sorts of vibrant colours and can help brighten those difficult dark spots in your garden. Rhododendrons are grown for their spectacular flowers usually borne in spring, although some – the deciduous rhododendron or azaleas have good autumn colour. How should you plant them? In the wild rhododendrons are woodland plants, so they prefer dappled sunshine and can manage well in shade. They like plenty of water however and will not do well in boggy or badly draining soil, so drainage is key. Plant in autumn or spring and use ericaceous compost.

Caught by the pension tax trap?
Avoiding the charge
Those looking to cash in part, or all, of their personal pension need to check they don’t pay too much tax.
The emergency tax code is still applied, but this triggers HMRC to adjust your tax code and send an updated version to your pension provider. Once the new code has been issued, any further, larger withdrawals are taxed correctly.
Pension freedom rules allow anyone aged 55 or over to access their personal pension funds, there are complex rules on how withdrawals are taxed. Problems can occur if you take a one-off lump sum – an ‘uncrystallised fund pension lump sum withdrawal’ (UFPLS) – perhaps to reinvest or to pay off debts. This differs from using a personal pension to provide a regular income, through a drawdown plan or annuity. Your pension provider will apply an emergency tax code, which assumes you are withdrawing the UFPLS on a monthly basis, unless it has an up-to date tax code for you.
As emergency tax codes are generally only applied the first-time people access their pension funds, one option is to make your first withdrawal a nominal amount, say £100.
You may be able to claim a rebate, either through your tax return at the end of the tax year, or HMRC if you need the rebate more quickly. If you are planning to withdraw a lump sum from your pension contact Bristol & West financial services. The Financial Conduct Authority does not regulate tax advice. Levels and bases of taxation and tax reliefs are subject to change and their value depends on individual circumstances. Tax laws can change.
For example, if you take a UFPLS of £10,000 at the start of the tax year, HMRC may assume you will take an income of £120,000 across the year from your pension and tax you accordingly. If it is a one-off withdrawal, you are likely to pay too much tax.

Councillors Surgery Article by Jos Clark Liberal Democrats
But following the initial felling works BCC have placed an emergency tree preservation order on the Wyevale site and all of the fields to Scot Lane and the Bristol park and ride.
Many local people will know and have used the Wyevale Garden Centre on the A4 Bath Road between the Hicks Gate roundabout and the Brislington Park and Ride.
The Forestry Commission’s local team has been on site to assess the work relating to the need for a feeling licence due to the material removed exceeding their permitted limit.
Well, sadly like so much of our retail sector the Garden centre has now closed and the site has been sold to a property development company and what a sorry mess they have made of it. They have slashed and burned a whole swathe of trees that have been on the site for hundreds of years. The irony of this destruction of a place that used to nurture trees and plants is not lost on me. The fact that there is currently no planning application for the site makes this destruction seem either pointless or very cynical.
They are recommending that the National Regulations Manager enforces a re-stocking notice on the land; this would require the owner to replant new trees on the field to the south west of the garden centre. But the Forestry Commission are not pursuing a prosecution due to the limited penalties that can be applied if the owner is convicted of an offence under the relevant act.
I contacted the Council as soon as I was informed of this environmental vandalism and they told me that they rely on a partnership approach with other agencies such as the Forestry Commission and the Planning department.
When an owner or tenant is convicted of an illegal felling the Forestry Commission can serve a restocking notice to replant the land concerned, or any other land as may be agreed, Failure to comply could lead to a fine of up to £5,000.
Sadly, the Wyevale site and the adjacent fields are not within a conservation area and the trees prior to the felling were not covered by a tree preservation order so the Council do not have any powers to pursue the owners for the actions they have taken thus far.
They have also recommended that the piles of dead trees are dismantled and the plastic separated and recycled and the vegetation waste be chipped and composted. Pollution Control from the Council have the power to issue a ‘Pre-Emptive Notice’ to require proper disposal of the plastic waste on the site. But really what this case shows is with large sums of money to be made from property development these fines are just peanuts. With our children demanding a better future for our planet it is this type of wanton desecration by those who just don’t care that is deeply depressing. We need stronger regulations and fines to deter those who care little for our environment and a lot for making money out of destroying it.

Councillors Corner
Article by Brislington Labour Councillors, Harriet Bradley and Mike Langley Young people and children have been in the news recently. Following the example of Swedish teenager, Greta Thunberg, who launched the idea of school strikes, they have been taking to the streets to express their concerns about the climate emergency which confronts our planet. I personally have been inspired by their passion and determination. The well-being of children is dear to the hearts of all of us and has been a major concern of the Labour Party over the years. The Sure Start programme designed by the last Labour government was designed to ensure that all children got off to a reasonable start in life, not disadvantaged by their parents’ poverty or difficult circumstances. Sadly, right now nationally the picture for the Children’s Centres set up under Sure Start has been bleak, with as many as 1,000 centres closing across the country since 2009 as a result of the Conservative austerity programme.
However, keeping these centres open allows for expansion of services again when more funding is provided by a Labour government. They are such an important resource for parents. The sad truth is that in a society as rich as Britain one in four of our children are growing up in poverty and the proportion continues to rise. Teachers tell us that they have to bring food to school to feed children who have come to school without a proper breakfast. Now we learn that every single Conservative Member of Parliament voted to approve a cutback in the income level which qualifies a family to get free school meals for their children. It seems they do not care about the children of less wealthy people.
As a child of the welfare state who grew up with free school milk and free school meals, went on to university with a grant and owes her life to the excellence of the free NHS, I feel very sorry for our younger generations.
I am delighted that the Labour administration here in Bristol has bucked that trend and has successfully kept all of the Children’s Centres open throughout the city. Also important are the services offered - again nationally there is a large decline, with reduced services reported by 55% of local authorities. For example, in Brislington, the local Children’s Centres in St Anne’s and Broomhill have felt some of these effects with the loss of the popular Forest School and Dad’s Club.

Those aspirant to improve their lives by attending universities find themselves lumbered with huge amounts of debt. Whether leaving school or university for the world of work, they face the prospect of low-paid insecure jobs. Unless they continue to live with their parents, many will struggle to pay spiralling rents in private-sector housing and will have little hope of finding the money to buy their own house. What kind of a future are we offering our youth? I hope we will all show our support for their concern for the environment, their opposition to plastic and pollution. Surely we should also strive to improve their chances of decent education and jobs? Contact us at cllr.harriet.bradley@bristol.gov.uk and cllr.mike.langley@bristol.gov.uk with your thoughts.

When it comes to leading your business, you’re either a cook, or a chef. Which are you? At Gomentum we observe many business owners who say they want growth and success. Twelve months later they’re no further forward. Spinning plates, distractions and a lack of time prevent focus and progress. We refer to these business owners as cooks. When cooks suddenly finds a rare moment for inspiration, they dive into the draw and pull out their trusted recipe for success. Every time they take the same ingredients, use the same tools and expect a mind-blowingly different output! Reliably the output is the same every time. Their recipe fails to inspire. Cooks become predictable, serving up the same old dish, make no progress and gradually lose credibility. The majority of cooks remain cooks. A minority of cooks, however, have the potential to become great chefs.
Chefs view the world in a different light. Chefs understand they need to invest time, money and effort if they are to become successful. The worn-out pots and pans need upgrading. New ingredients need to be experimented with. Chefs need to create a recipe book, not rely on a single dish. Great chefs build winning teams. When you become head chef, you should constantly recognise others with similar ambition. When you identify great talent, you should fully understand and support that potential, encouraging individuals to excel in their role at every opportunity. No matter the profile of any great chef, continuity in the kitchen is a must. A great chef’s brand has to deliver every time, without fail and to the highest of standards. As head chef, if any dining customer feels the need to question whether you were in the kitchen today, you still have work to do. So, in your business, are you a cook, or a chef? What every small business needs for a successful website If you are a small business in 2019 and you don’t yet have a website, or you have an outdated website, you could well be missing out. More and more customers are turning to the internet when deciding to make a purchase or buy a service, so you need a professional website to ensure that you’re not losing out to your competitors! However, many businesses often find that the process of setting up their ideal website is not quite as straightforward as it ought to be, so here are some key considerations when planning your website: Professionally designed websites vs. DIY sites Once upon a time, when websites were in their infancy and the height of gaming sophistication was two lines playing tennis with a dot, nobody cared how your website looked – they were just impressed you were there at all. However, times have changed and people now make split second judgements about you and your company, and they will decide whether to spend their money with you depending on your website.
Understand the costs Asking how much a website costs is like asking how much a car costs, or how long is a piece of string. The price will depend on whether you need a basic website with simple functionality, an ecommerce website, or a bespoke database driven website with advanced functionality. To make it easier, choose a website designer who is clear and transparent in their costs and make sure that you know what you are paying for and what is and is not included in the price. You should know what functionality you will get and whether what you are paying covers: * Website hosting * Domain name renewal * Website editing * A CMS (content management system) * An SSL security certificate If in doubt, ask “Are there any other costs associated with my website that I will need to take into consideration?” Responsive design
It might be tempting to go for a DIY website and save money to start with, but it could cost you dearly in the long run, and there are plenty of cost-effective alternatives to DIY sites available.
All new websites should now be responsive – in other words, your website should adapt to any screen size so that it is as easy to use on a mobile or tablet as it is on a desktop.
Are you happy with your web design company?
If your existing website is not responsive, it could be losing you valuable customers. According to Google, 60% of people will abandon your site if it is not responsive, which is why Google now ranks mobile friendly websites above non-mobile friendly websites in the search results.
You are going to be working with your website designer on an ongoing basis – make sure that you meet them and they are interested in you and your business. Avoid companies that just send out a sales rep who talks to you about what you can afford! Editing your website Ensure that you will be able to use a CMS (Content Management System) to edit your website on an ongoing basis. We’ve worked with many small businesses whose old websites did not let them make basic edits, including changes to contact details or product prices – this can be a disaster for your business. Also make sure that if you do need help editing your website in the future, that your web designer will be there to offer support without charging you a small fortune.

SEO Once you have your website up and running, you need to make sure that it can be found by the search engines. Website design for small business should include at least basic SEO (Search Engine Optimisation). It is important to find a good SEO-friendly CMS to build and maintain your website. Next steps To find out more about how you can create an online presence for your business, call website consultant Suzy Perry from it’seeze Web Design Bristol on 07837 003937 or 0117 214 0024.
