National Our Health Heroes Awards recognise unsung support workers and much more Behind the scenes, there are thousands of people Our Health Heroes, the national healthcare awards which celebrate individuals, teams and organisations within the healthcare and care sectors, are back for the fourth year and promise to be bigger and better than ever. Nominations for the Our Health Heroes awards were launched in April 2019, delivered by Skills for Health with support from headline sponsor Health Education England, and award category sponsors NHS Employers and UNISON. The unique national awards include eight categories, which recognise the contribution of support workers, apprentices, learning and development teams, integrated teams and much more. Anyone can make a nomination for an individual or team working in the health or care sector, whether clinical, operational or voluntary. The flagship award for ‘Outstanding Contribution’, exclusively sponsored by NHS Employers, is open to anyone who has gone the extra mile for the benefit of improving health and care in the UK.
who work tirelessly to keep the health service running smoothly, day after day. Without these people, our healthcare system couldn’t survive. These are the unsung heroes of the UK’s healthcare sector.
“Our Health Heroes rewards teams, individuals and employers who deliver outstanding care and support to patients and colleagues. If that sounds like someone you know, please make a nomination.” Since its creation in 2016, Our Health Heroes has recognised more than 90 winners from all four corners of the UK for their dedication and inspiring contribution to the care and wellbeing of patients and other staff members. Thanks to the ongoing support of headline sponsor Health Education England the awards have grown again for the fourth year and will now also include the Learning and Development Project of the Year Award which recognises the importance of a dedicated development programme in the sector to support staff growth and improvements to services.
Danny Mortimer, Chief Executive of NHS Employers, said: “NHS Employers is proud to sponsor the Outstanding Contribution award, to ensure we recognise all our teams, who go above and beyond for our patients. “Without its highly diverse and incredibly dedicated workforce, the NHS could not provide the topquality care our communities deserve. Staff work together in a huge variety of roles, often under immense pressure, to offer the best possible care and we want to help highlight this vital work. “It’s great to shine a spotlight on those whose contribution and dedication deserves to be recognised and celebrated, but who often go unacknowledged.” During the awards launch, Adam Causon, Executive Director of Skills for Health, said: “At some time we’ve all received fantastic care and support from healthcare workers in our lives, but how often do we get the chance to thank the healthcare assistants who were there to support us, the cleaner who kept the ward clean and safe, or the porter that kept our spirits up as they moved us round the hospital? “

Portway Park and Ride train station on track after planning permission granted. It is the first train station to be built in the city for more than 20 years. Plans to build this new railway station in Bristol is more than 20 years that has taken a huge step forward and now planning permission for the scheme has been granted. This new station will be built by the Portway Park and Ride site near Avonmouth, which will be costing around £2.23 million and will be the first one built since Filton Abbey Wood I 1996. It will be a new station on the Severn Beach Line – located between Avonmouth and Shirehampton. Planning permission for the new station was granted by Bristol City Council last month – but this project has been ongoing for months. It was one of the first transport projects to be approved by the West of England Combined Authority (Wca) in 2017. Network rail has been carrying out and survey to assess the development site next to the Park and Ride for the ground conditions. A single platform has been agreed to be built behind the park and ride and can finally begin. This single platform will be long enough for five cars trains and Network rail also plans to install a ticket machine at the station – something which is not available at other stations along the Severn Beach line. With the new station being built it is also including seven disabled parking spaces adjacent to the primary pedestrian access to the platform in the existing car park as well as cycle parking for 40 bicycles in two separate covered shelters. Bristol City Council has secured a substantial £1.67m from the government’s New Stations Funds to make this project happen after working with Network Rail on developing the project.
10
And the Weca – the body responsible for transport projects across the region – was also instrumental in getting the project started off the ground. Local spokesman said The new station is part of a plan to connect more communities to our railway network. It’s yet another sign of investment in the West of England and we allocated £553,000 to this project through our Local Growth Fund.” When the project was first announced a completion, date of 2019 was given. Direct Local has asked Network Rail if this is still the case. The scheme forms part of a long-term rail strategy for the city region through the MetroWest programme, including improved frequencies on the Severn Beach Line which will serve the station by 2020. Earlier this month the MetoWest project was given a huge boost after government transport chiefs confirmed millions in funding to re-open the Portishead rail line. Officially called MetroWest phase one, the Portishead to Bristol line is viewed as a vital to solving the congestion gridlock faced by thousands of motorists who battle to get in and out of the growing town each day. The town – which has seen its population grow massively over the last decade due to major development has often been described as the UK’s biggest car park. MetroWest phase 2 will see a section of line between Bristol Parkway and Henbury reopen and an increase in the number of services on the Yate corridor. New platforms will also be built at North Filton and Ashley Down as part of the project. Work is currently underway to open the Henbury Spur by 2021.

Sarah shares her Slimming and Business success
A slimmer who transformed her life by losing 2st 7lbs and runs two Slimming World groups used her success to shape a whole new career helping other people change their lives and achieve their weight loss dreams too, and is looking for others to do the same. Sarah Bryant joined her local Slimming World group in Whitchurch 10 years ago and trained as a Consultant for Slimming World, is now looking for past and present members to join her team in South Bristol. The latest government figures reveal that around one in four adults is overweight and by 2034, this will increase to one in three. Lots of people are struggling with a weight problem, and Sarah says her role has never been more important. She says: “When I first joined I never dreamed that I would end up helping other people to lose weight. It’s a privilege to be able to pass on the experience that helped me, so that I can give others the support they need to get to target" “Support is really the most important thing. I couldn’t have lost weight without the weekly help, and understanding of my own Consultant and group. I know the challenges people can face, which is why I will be there to support every one of my members to reach their chosen target weight. Setting targets, sharing recipes and working together to overcome challenges and celebrate success is so important. That’s why at my group there’ll be tons of support, encouragement and fun. “Like a lot of slimmers, I had tried to lose weight many times by following numerous diets which were never sustainable because I’d always get tired of restricting what I ate. I thought I was destined to struggle with my weight for the rest of my life, but when I came to Slimming World it was different. I never felt like I was on a diet.
12
The eating plan encourages you to eat lots of tasty, filling foods like pasta, rice, potatoes and lean meat and fish, and no foods are banned so there’s no deprivation. I couldn’t believe I’d found a way to lose weight without starving myself. Becoming more active is important too, yet most of us have memories of being forced to take part in activity at school. Our Body Magic programme shows people how they can build it into their daily routine without having to take up traditional forms of exercise like going to the gym or running. Everything counts, from walking, gardening to washing the car. As a Consultant it’s my role to create that supportive atmosphere to get people sharing their ideas and experiences to help others – it’s going to be great fun!” Slimming World Consultants are former members who have lost weight at their local group themselves and groups are set up as micro businesses in the heart of local communities. There are currently more than 4,000 Slimming World Consultants across the UK running over 15,000 groups. Consultants receive training in nutrition and the psychology of weight management, and Slimming World’s healthy eating and physical activity programmes. They also learn how to use the power of group support to empower members to take control of their own weight loss journey. As self-employed micro-entrepreneurs, Consultants also learn how to build a successful community-based business. “For me becoming a self-employed franchisee was a great option. I wanted a job that was well paid and could fit around my busy family life, so launching my own Slimming World group was an ideal option. Sarah who is also a Team Developer, says: “Slimming World Consultants are chosen for their natural warmth, friendliness and positive outlook and because they genuinely care about the health and happiness of others. Your Garden In June
Come June, its pretty safe to say that the risk of frost is behind us – summer is on its way and it’s time to make sure the garden is in good shape for the summer months. The sun is shining, the birds are singing and the garden is bursting into life. This makes June a particularly busy month for the green-fingered among us with lots of planting, pruning, maintenance and weeding to do done. All our hard work is sure to be worth the effort though as we sit back and admire the onset of summer in our garden.
Plant of the month: Rose
The essential gardening jobs for June
Plant baskets and containers Now the risk of morning frost has passed, its time to plant up your containers, hanging baskets and planters. If you already had them growing in the greenhouse, or hardening off outside during the day, then It’s now safe to move them out to their summer position – choosing a sunny spot will ensure you get the best from them. Trim any excess growth to maintain shape and deadhead regularly to encourage flower growth. Water at least once a day or more frequently when it’s hot dry and windy. Regular feeding – once per week in the summer – will also help your plants to thrive. Mow lawns once a week The lawn will be growing fast now and will continue to do so throughout the summer, so a good weekly cut is essential to keep it looking neat and tidy. To make sure your lawn looks its best for summer, apply a spring fertiliser onto established lawns now.
18
A good feed and a regular close cut will encourage extra growth making your lawn thick and lush. Don’t forget to reduce cutting frequency and raise mover blades if we have a drought.
Why should you plant them? Roses suit all kinds of gardens –they come in huge variety of colours, shapes and scents. They can be grown in beds, borders and containers and can be grown up walls, fences and trellis.
Care for your roses June is traditionally the month when roses are at their peak. You will need to keep an eye out for black spots and aphid attacks. Both of these will need treating immediately to ensure that too much damage doesn’t occur. Black spot is a serious disease for roses caused by a fungus which infects the leaves and reduces plant vigour, and should be treated at first sign of infection with a fungicide. Green fly are sapsucking creatures that can alter the growth of roses, also decreasing their vigour. Treat roses that are being attacked by aphids with an insecticide.
How should you plant them? Roses grown in containers can be planted all year round – check the label when buying though as their preferred spot and conditions will vary depending on the type. Dig a hole roughly twice the size of the root ball to a spade’s depth, dig in a good quality compost and fork in a general fertiliser.
Deadhead any faded rose blooms to encourage fresh buds to grow and apply a rose fertiliser after the first flowering.
Plant the rose to the same depth as it was in the container, firm down and water well. Apply a rose fertiliser every spring for amazing displays of colour.

Caught by the pension tax trap?
Avoiding the charge
Those looking to cash in part, or all, of their personal pension need to check they don’t pay too much tax.
The emergency tax code is still applied, but this triggers HMRC to adjust your tax code and send an updated version to your pension provider. Once the new code has been issued, any further, larger withdrawals are taxed correctly.
Pension freedom rules allow anyone aged 55 or over to access their personal pension funds, there are complex rules on how withdrawals are taxed. Problems can occur if you take a one-off lump sum – an ‘uncrystallised fund pension lump sum withdrawal’ (UFPLS) – perhaps to reinvest or to pay off debts. This differs from using a personal pension to provide a regular income, through a drawdown plan or annuity. Your pension provider will apply an emergency tax code, which assumes you are withdrawing the UFPLS on a monthly basis, unless it has an up-to date tax code for you. For example, if you take a UFPLS of £10,000 at the start of the tax year, HMRC may assume you will take an income of £120,000 across the year from your pension and tax you accordingly. If it is a one-off withdrawal, you are likely to pay too much tax.
As emergency tax codes are generally only applied the first-time people access their pension funds, one option is to make your first withdrawal a nominal amount, say £100.
You may be able to claim a rebate, either through your tax return at the end of the tax year, or HMRC if you need the rebate more quickly. If you are planning to withdraw a lump sum from your pension contact Bristol & West financial services. The Financial Conduct Authority does not regulate tax advice. Levels and bases of taxation and tax reliefs are subject to change and their value depends on individual circumstances. Tax laws can change.

Councillors Surgery There is no doubt that we are beginning to see a change in our democratic processes as people feel that the two main parties in our Country do not reflect their views.
But we are beginning to see cracks appearing in this two party stranglehold with MPs leaving both the Tories and Labour and the rise of the Liberal Democrats as the third party in British politics.
Whether it be climate change or inequality, lack of affordable housing or the crisis in our health service they feel frustrated by the lack of action or even more in the lack of accountability.
The recent local elections showed that the voters have tired of business as usual and want to see a change in the way politics is conducted in our Country in the future. Councillors Corner
Last week Brislington’s Labour Councillors attended an event at St Anne’s House celebrating the success of the new winter shelter for homeless people in South Bristol – a first. Although there had been initial local concerns about the hostel, which opened last November and closed in April, it had been effectively and securely managed and was considered a great success. There had also been a lot of support and help from the community. For example, the children of St Anne’s Primary School brought Christmas gifts to the residents, local businesses bought the shelter’s entire Christmas ‘wishlist’ online as a charitable donation, and the local Coop store provided free tea and coffee throughout. It was great to hear that virtually all of the 50 or so residents had moved on into other accommodation and had not had to return to the street!
Brislington Labour Party Community Liaison Officer Clare Flegg was given a special thanks during the evening for all her hard work in helping to support the shelter throughout the winter months. Homelessness remains a massive problem in Bristol. A count in November 2018 found 82 rough sleepers, the fifth highest return nationwide.

Last year 517 households were living in temporary accommodation, a 223% increase since 2012. Lone mothers are specially at risk; it was shocking to see a young woman with a baby camped out in a council car park. Spiralling rents for private tenancies are the main cause and there is a huge waiting list (12,000 households) for the limited council housing on offer through Home Choice. Many people have taken to living in vans, which create problems about handling waste and hygiene. Currently the average Bristolian would need 10 times their salary to buy a house. The ambition of Labour, both nationally and locally, is to build enough genuinely affordable housing for all our citizens. The St Anne’s House shelter did its bit to help and will reopen in the autumn. In the meantime, the good news is that the top floor has been rented by ‘Co-exist’ a group promoting artists, local enterprise and community activities who used to be based at Hamilton House in Stoke’s Croft), will be opening its doors shortly. Exciting times to get involved!
