Could you look after a life-changing puppy for a year?
You may well have heard of Guide Dogs, we’re a national charity working to ensure that people with a visual impairment do not lose their independence. There are around 2 million people in the UK living with sight loss, and all experience a different level of vision and mobility. We offer a range of mobility services to help people keep their independence, and have an amazing number of dedicated staff, volunteers, and of course, dogs who support the Guide Dogs mission.
Guide Dogs needs volunteers who can help look after and support the training of our guide dog puppies! This is a full-time volunteering role as the puppy would live with you, and you would be providing the puppy with a vital foundation for its future role as a guide dog for someone living with sight loss. Training and ongoing support is provided by Guide Dogs and your Puppy Training Supervisor, and all food and vets bills are paid for.
If you love dogs and have the time and the patience this could be the role for you.”Puppy Walking Volunteer, Chris, says “Every day is different – I could be taking the dog out on a walk, getting it used to trains, buses or the seaside! It’s great to be with Puppy Training Supervisor, Lucy, says “Puppy a dog knowing you are giving something back… Walking is a rewarding role and we are very grateful When a guide dog owner gets in touch with me to to our wonderful volunteers who expose the pupsay thank you for puppy walking their life-changing pies to a range of daily activities before entering dog, it really feels so rewarding and it’s lovely to get into training at about 12-16 months of age. During their feedback.” this time the Puppy Walker will have full training and support from their local Puppy Training Supervisor. To find out more about puppy walking with Guide With visits and regular communication. As a puppy Dogs or any other volunteering opportunities, visit walker you will need to be able to dedicate at least www.guidedogs.org.uk/volunteer or give the voluna year to the role. teering office a call on 0345 143 0191.

Slimming expert says we're all ‘Carbfused!
Slimming expert says we’re all ‘Carbfused’… and that you CAN eat carbohydrates and lose weight this new year!
A weight-loss Consultant from Whitchurch is urging anyone who wants to lose weight in 2019 not to fall for the common misconception that cutting out carbohydrates is effective for long-term weight loss, after new research found that low-carb diets are often difficult to follow and leave people feeling hungry, bored and restricted. The study, conducted by YouGov and commissioned by Slimming World, concluded that the nation is confused about the role of carbohydrates in health and weight loss. They found more than 70% of people have tried to lose weight, with more than a third (37%) of them following a low-carbohydrate diet. However, many of those surveyed said they found diets that restrict carbohydrates difficult to follow, because of feeling hungry, bored and restricted in what they could eat. Sarah Bryant, a Slimming World Consultant for the local groups, says that while many people wishing to lose weight believe they need to cut out high-carbohydrate foods from their diet – like pasta, rice, potatoes and bread – in fact, members of his/her slimming group eat these foods regularly, lose weight, and keep it off. She says: “We hear conflicting and confusing messages about the best way to lose weight all the time, especially this time of year. Often these messages in the media, on social media and within the diet industry tell us how we need to ‘cut out’ carbohydrates in order to lose weight. When the survey asked if starchy carbohydrates should be the main source of calories in a healthy, balanced diet, 81% thought this was a myth or weren’t certain whether it was a myth or fact. We really are a nation that’s ‘carbfused’! “At Slimming World, though, we know that carbohydrates play such an important role in both a healthy diet and sustainable weight loss. I’ve lost over 2st as a Slimming World member myself, and trust me I couldn’t have lost the weight, or kept it off, without being able to eat pasta, rice, potatoes and bread along the way! In fact, you don’t need to cut anything out completely to lose weight and keep it off.
10
“‘Banning’ foods is often counter-productive. Having been overweight myself I know this just leads to cravings, which in turn leads to feelings of guilt and low self-esteem – a vicious cycle. Instead, filling up on low-energy-dense foods like carbohydrates, fruits, vegetables and lean meat, means you can eat larger amounts for fewer calories and feel fuller and more satisfied while losing weight, making it much more sustainable in the long-run. “This, along with increasing activity levels slowly and consistently, and getting the support of a warm and friendly support group like mine, is the magic formula for successful weight loss”. “The thing I love about Slimming World is that it really isn’t a diet. It’s more of a lifestyle change. I can still eat all my favourite meals – curries, chillies, fry-ups, pasta dishes, roast dinners, you name it – just by making small and simple changes to the way I prepare and cook them. The whole family can enjoy my cooking too and they say the meals we eat now are tastier than before! I have so much more energy since losing weight, and let me tell you being able to eat pasta, rice and potatoes definitely helps that! I wish I’d have known what I know now all those years ago”. To find out more about the Whitchurch or Hengrove Slimming World groups call Sarah on 07879 443888 or visit www.slimmingworld.co.uk to find your nearest group.

MARCH SEES SOME HUGE MOVIE RELEASES AT CINEWORLD As well as playing host to Mother’s Day, Pancake Day and St. Patrick’s Day this year, March 2019 is also a time that sees a most eclectic mix of movies release at your local Cineworld, too. Whether you’re looking to re-experience a Disney classic through a 21st century lens, witness Marvel’s first female-led film or face your internal fears, it all awaits you on the big screen. Things get off to a flying start on 8th March, with Brie Larson taking on the role of the titular Captain Marvel. Forced to come to terms with her identity as part of an origin story set in the late ‘90s, she’ll need to test her superhuman skills and go higher, further, faster on her mission to defeat the shapeshifting race of Skrulls. Then, two weeks later on 22nd March, acclaimed comedian turned horror director Jordan Peele follows up 2017’s Get Out with new psychological thriller Us. In it, the Wilson family arrive at a beach-side resort hoping to relax, but little do they know that alternate versions of themselves, known only as ‘The Tethered’, lurk in the darkness.
Captain Marvel
Fast forward seven days to 29th March, and if you’ve never seen an elephant fly you won’t be disappointed. Tim Burton’s Dumbo adaptation arrives almost 80 years after the 1941 original, but at over twice its running time, expect plenty of new perspective on the classic tale. Lastly don’t forget, Cineworld Bristol and Direct Local Bristol have teamed up to give readers a chance to win two free cinema tickets. Simply fill out the next page word search
The ‘March madness’ expression has never been truer this month at Cineworld, so be sure not to miss out.

Your Garden In March Spring is finally here! The warmer and sunnier days during March provide the opportunity for an Increasing range of gardening tasks. It’s a great time of the year as new life bursts forth and the garden begins to transform. Preparation of seed beds and borders should be well under the way this month as well as cutting back winter shrubs and generally tidying up the mess that the winter has left behind. Whether you’re preparing for shrubs and bedding plants or sowing seed for vegetables. Once all the tidying is done you’ll be in a better position to plan the seasons planting.
It can be applied around the base of plants by Scattering straight from the box and left to be watered in the rain. Unfortunately, the warm weather will also see weeds start to grow as well. Weeding isn’t the most popular of jobs but its best to pull any that start to appear while they are young to prevent spreading.
Scarify the lawn Do some lawn preparations before the growing season gets well under way. Choose a dry day and give the lawn a rake to remove the remnants of winter before cutting with the mower blades set at the highest position. Then aerate with a garden fork or aeration machine. This helps drainage and gets oxygen to the roots. Finally, apply a top dressing of spring lawn feed to add nutrients. Enjoy your garden!
Plant of the month: Pansy / Viola Why should you plant them?
3 Essential gardening jobs for March Sow seeds and plant onion sets, shallots and potatoes As the soil begins to warm you can start to sow broad beans, salads and sweet peas. If bad weather is forecast, be sure to cover seedings with cloches to protect them. March is also the time to plant out onion and shallot sets – cover with fleece or netting to protect from birds. Early varieties of potato such as ‘Rocket’ and ‘swift’ , can be planted. If they have been kept in a light and frost-free environments, they should be ‘chitting’ (a slight sprouting from the seed potato). Chitting before planting can encourage earlier and heavier cropping.
Feed As the warmer weather promotes fresh growth, a general garden fertiliser should be applied to help boost roots, green foliage and encourage more fruits and flowers from your plants.
18
One of the most popular bedding plants, pansies and violas are hardy annuals that have a stunning array of colours to choose from. Bringing the joy of spring to your garden during the colder months, they grow happily in borders or containers as well as providing great ground cover.
How should you plant them? Plant them in moist, well-drained soil in a spot with good sunlight to encourage flowering, tough little plants that are extremely hardy, they prefer cooler temperatures and need watering regularly. They are also very versatile plant them in beds, borders, containers and hanging baskets.

Caught by the pension tax trap?
Avoiding the charge
Those looking to cash in part, or all, of their personal pension need to check they don’t pay too much tax.
The emergency tax code is still applied, but this triggers HMRC to adjust your tax code and send an updated version to your pension provider. Once the new code has been issued, any further, larger withdrawals are taxed correctly.
Pension freedom rules allow anyone aged 55 or over to access their personal pension funds, there are complex rules on how withdrawals are taxed. Problems can occur if you take a one-off lump sum – an ‘uncrystallised fund pension lump sum withdrawal’ (UFPLS) – perhaps to reinvest or to pay off debts. This differs from using a personal pension to provide a regular income, through a drawdown plan or annuity. Your pension provider will apply an emergency tax code, which assumes you are withdrawing the UFPLS on a monthly basis, unless it has an up-to date tax code for you.
As emergency tax codes are generally only applied the first-time people access their pension funds, one option is to make your first withdrawal a nominal amount, say £100.
You may be able to claim a rebate, either through your tax return at the end of the tax year, or HMRC if you need the rebate more quickly. If you are planning to withdraw a lump sum from your pension contact Bristol & West financial services. The Financial Conduct Authority does not regulate tax advice. Levels and bases of taxation and tax reliefs are subject to change and their value depends on individual circumstances. Tax laws can change.
For example, if you take a UFPLS of £10,000 at the start of the tax year, HMRC may assume you will take an income of £120,000 across the year from your pension and tax you accordingly. If it is a one-off withdrawal, you are likely to pay too much tax.

A used car is always better value, right? It’s not necessarily that simple.
Buying a used car? •
A used car is typically cheaper than new
•
It can be more cost effective and you probably won’t have to pay interest as the car will be cheap enough to buy out right.
Buying a New car
•
Buying a new car may seem beyond reach. In this day and age you can find multiple deals to get a new car by either financing the car for a period of time or by using a just add fuel scheme.
The value of car will still go down but at lower rate due to a brand new car.
•
A used car can be very costly to maintain.
•
More problems can occur with a second hand car, which can be expensive.
•
Used cars will have either a short warranty or it may have no warranty at all.
•
Insurance will have to be paid separate and will not be in a package like PCP.
One company that does offer a just add fuel option is Marmalade’s fuel & Go, which combine the cost of the car insurance into a single monthly payment, which can make your chances of getting a brand new car seem possible. On the other hand, a reliable used car can still make a lot of sense. Why buy new? •
New cars have more up to date technology in them to keep you and others safer on the road.
•
Some finance schemes will include the insurance in the monthly cost of the car.
•
New cars will have some type of warranty cover for a certain period of time.

Local business people form #TREK4MIND to raise £50k for mental health charity A team of 12 business owners are preparing to climb Africa’s highest mountain with the aim of raising a significant amount of money for the national charity Mind. The group have formed a tight knit team entitled #TREK4MIND and have been training and fundraising for over eight months ready to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania on 1st March 2019.
#TREK4MIND Leader Joe Tompkinson told us “The reason why we have decided to embark on this challenge is to raise much needed awareness for what is fast becoming a big problem in this country and worldwide. 1 in 4 people will at some time in their lives suffer from a mental health condition and we wanted to do something which is a physical challenge but also mentally demanding, something that requires a great deal of dedication. Because of that it goes hand in hand with the charity we are supporting and Mind support people through hard times. As a team we will be supporting each other on the side of that mountain”
Mt Kilimanjaro is the world’s highest freestanding mountain at 5895 metres and the team are planning to complete the trek in eight days, walking up to 18 hours a day. They will encounter all seasons and terrains and will have to battle both fatigue and altitude to reach the summit. All twelve come from varied backgrounds but all work with Utility Warehouse who are matching the money raised by their hard work. Various fundraisers have been held in the local area including a charity ball, quiz night and 10 hour “stepathon”.
Mind’s mission is to work towards a world where everyone experiencing a mental health problem gets both support and respect. The charity plays a key role in campaigning and lobbying in areas that impact mental health, providing training to employers, and providing information lines for those in need of confidential help. You can follow the #TREK4MIND journey on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram by searching for @trek4mind and donations are gratefully received via their website www.trek4mind.co.uk

Councillors Corner
Article by Brislington Labour Councillors, Harriet Bradley and Mike Langley As a councillor I often get complaints about the slowness of responses from council services. I sympathise with people’s frustration over this. However, it needs to be put in context.
Graduates loaded with huge debt from their university fees are forced into low-paid work in call centres or on Deliveroo bikes. Those in ‘good jobs’ often suffer as well, as organizations cut staff to be ‘competitive’. Teachers are overworked, causing a third of new recruits to leave after a few years. Doctors take early retirement because of deteriorating conditions in the NHS. There has been a major rise in staff sickness related to stress.
Because of the dramatic cuts in government funding for local services over the past eight years a great number of council jobs have been lost, leaving some departments struggling with overwhelming workloads. This is sad, not just for all of us as service users, but because it deprives our city and region of opportunities for worthwhile, reasonably paid jobs. This is part of a much wider problem our country faces, the loss of secure employment and its replacement by low-paid dead-end work, zero-hours contracts, and a raft of temporary jobs in what has been called the ‘gig economy’. Only this week we learn that the closure of the Honda Factory in Swindon will bring a loss of 3,500 jobs to the town. In our supermarkets and retail outlets the use of automatic tills takes away a kind of work useful for women who need jobs near home to manage the care of their children. Personally I never use those hateful tills!
What needs to happen to restore our economy to how it was? When I was a young adult I remember it was all very different. There was more jobs in manufacturing, more paid apprenticeships and training opportunities for young people, more funding for those in further and higher education, more meaningful and secure employment that meant a living wage for most people.
We must pressure the Conservative government to change its policy on local government and start restoring funding levels. A future Labour Government is pledged to end zero-hours contracts and unpaid internships; it will institute an obligatory living wage, Many of you who are parents will know the backed up by a free National Education service to consequences of this for our young people, who struggle to find jobs which will allow them the futures allow people of all ages access to retraining and renewing their skills. We are a rich society. We they wish for (how can they afford a house, a car, should be able to make every job a decent job. children?).

Councillors Surgery Article by Jos Clark Liberal Democrats
Nothing for me shows the failure of this current Government’s policies than that aimed at those who are homeless and/or sleeping rough. We have all seen them huddled in doorways on bitter cold nights with their sleeping bag and few belongings in a carrier bag or two and wondered how we have got to this low point in our City and Country. We are forever being told that the economy is doing well and there have never been more people in work than there is now etc, but we have not seen so much poverty in many a long year either. Even people who are working cannot make ends meet and need to rely on food banks to feed themselves and their children. Its unclear what the homeless and those needing food would do without the support and generosity of public and our churches, who provide money, food, support and even shelter to those in need. Many volunteers will go out on dark and cold nights on soup kitchen runs to offer food and a friendly ear to those who find themselves on the street.
But what of the Government response to this housing and homelessness crisis, don’t worry they have a strategy to end rough sleeping by 2027, yes those in need now will only have to wait another 8 years for their plight to finally end. Every year local Councils must supply the Government with the number of rough sleepers in their area. Guess what they have even changed the method for collecting this data, those on private land cannot be counted(ie: those sleeping in multistorey car parks for example), nor those who are not actually asleep when the count takes place, so the true figure is much higher than reported. The other element that has added to homelessness and poverty is the Government’s roll out of universal credit, on the face of it this policy makes sense; but the Tories have cut billions from the programme and are making those on very low incomes with no savings wait 5 weeks for their money. This has let to real hardship and has even seen parents go without food so their children can eat. I myself have worked at a food bank and seen first hand the misery low income people are suffering from this and other Government spending cuts. More money must be put into the universal credit system and the 5 week wait abolished.
The current home Secretary Mr Javid(who was born in Easton and should know something about those on low incomes) declared a state of emergency for a few desperate people crossing the Channel, I think the Government should declare one for housing and homelessness crisis we are facing. Those in need should not have to wait until 2027 to see this shameful situation resolved.
