COUNCILLORS SURGERY By Jos Clark, Liberal Democrat With the General Election in full swing, there will be plenty of leaflets and newspapers dropping through your letterbox urging you to vote. Of course all these leaflets are printed on paper and as we know that comes from trees. Well it’s lucky that Bristol is not supplying any for this purpose as they are slashing the tree maintenance budget by 78% and are going to refuse any new trees either by residents or developers. This comes only two years after Bristol was declared European Green Capital and where so many Bristolians like and want trees in their neighbourhoods. The Council are proposing not to pollard the trees, which will lead to greater problem with tree growth pushing up pavements etc. And compensation claims for tree damage to property. If tree safety becomes an issue they will just fell the tree (which will not be replaced) and that costs more than 16 years of maintenance of the trees!

Of course with the election underway you will hear a lot from the parties about the environment, but Labour are in charge here and they follow very much a production-ist approach, they have little interest in environmental issues and this is a massive step backwards for a city that is proud of its parks and green spaces. This election should be about many things, yes of course Brexit is the overriding concern of voters, but under funding in our NHS and social care system, the lack of affordable homes and well paid jobs are also important too. But we are the custodians of the planet and it is our responsibility to protect it for future generations, Labour should not be allowed to get away with wanton vandalism of our green and pleasant City. Once the trees have gone, Labour are not going to replace them another shameful and ill thought out decision from our clueless Labour Mayor.

Of course trees provide a vital green lung and with more people becoming concerned with the effects of vehicle pollution to remove the trees seems to me to be counterproductive and just plain wrong.

Disney is set to receive an insurance payout of £41 million, following the death of Carrie Fisher in late December 2016 – potentially one of the largest personal accident payouts in history. Whenever any person dies, it has a huge impact on loved ones, but the death of Star Wars actress, Carrie Fisher has had more than just an emotional impact on those who knew her. The world-renowned movie and theme park giant, Disney, which owns Lucasfilm and the Star Wars franchise, took out a $50 million (£41 million) contractual protection insurance policy with Lloyds of London on Carrie Fisher. This was put in place to protect from any losses made should Fisher become unable to complete the three upcoming Star Wars films she was cast in. Fisher did appear in 2015's “The Force Awakens” and she had also finished filming “Episode VIII: The Last Jedi”, which is due for release in December 2017. However, her character Princess Leia was also expected to feature in a third movie, which hadn’t started filming when she died following a heart attack on a flight between London and Los Angeles.

Studio bosses at Disney have yet to comment on the policy and its implications, but insurance contracts covering major film companies for the unexpected death or incapacity of actors aren’t uncommon in Hollywood. Carrie Fisher was a hero to fans around the world, not just for her acting but also as a writer, comedian and advocate for people with mental health issues. This insurance policy as well as the huge response from millions of people globally, show the difference one life can make to so many people – highlighting the importance of planning for the future. If you’ve yet to think about planning for your future or writing your Will to protect your family from significant financial impact, Legally Secure are experts in this field and can talk you through how to create or update your Will.

THE WORD ON THE STREET Summer in the city By Eileen Means “Little darling, it’s been a long cold lonely winter, Little darling, it feels like years since it’s been here, Here comes the sun, (doo doo doo doo)” (George Harrison) “Here comes the summer sun, he burns my skin...” (Texas)

The beautiful green hills can be seen from Dundry slopes to Leigh Woods via Ashton Court, the Downs and Suspension Bridge from many of the busiest streets in the city. Next time you are stuck in Bristol’s notorious congestion, raise your eyes to appreciate the green spaces a couple of miles away; it is calming. And let’s not forget the lovely parks and open spaces in the city, many of which are hidden and known only to local people; there is Frome Valley in Bristol East, Blaise Castle park and museum in the West, not forgetting our hidden gems in the centre of the city, Brandon Hill and Castle Park. Lots of smaller but equally valued local parks are just as nice for a picnic or barbeque like St Andrews Park in Bishopston or Dame Emily Park in Bedminster. So, here we go everyone; a rousing chorus of

Is there anywhere better than Bristol when the sun shines? We live in a beautiful city with lots of places to enjoy and have fun in the summer. After a long cold lonely winter, let’s take a moment to appreciate the city where we live.

“Here comes the sun,

Surrounded by lovely countryside from Weston to Gloucestershire and not far from the sea, Bristol has it all.

It’s all right

Here comes the sun and I say It’s all right

(Doo do doo do doo do doo)”

South Bristol’s slimming expert says aiming high and getting support is the key to success A local expert is urging people starting a weight loss programme to have faith in aiming for their ideal weight, after a study found that people who set ambitious targets lose almost twice as much weight in 12 months. Sarah Bryant, a Slimming World Consultant for the Hengrove and Whitchurch groups, is preparing for a busy summer as many people vow to make this the year that they achieve their dream weight. She says the latest research conducted by Slimming World shows that people in Bristol shouldn’t feel limited by past weight loss attempts and should instead aim high for weight they would love to be, and get the support they need to achieve it. The national study of 24,457 people with a BMI (body mass index) in the obese category looked at the impact of target setting, and found that the more ambitious the target, the more weight people lose – regardless of their starting weight. Sarah says her Slimming World groups are the best place to get motivational support along with care and camaraderie to learn to make simple, healthy changes to lose weight and keep it off. She says: "No dream is out of reach at Slimming World. Whether it’s to lose ten pounds or ten stone, fit into a size 12 dress or a suit you’ve grown out of, run around with the kids or run a 10k race – together, me and the members of the my Slimming World groups can help to get you there! "We never tell members what they should weigh, and so all new members chose their own target weight when they join. However much you’d love to lose, we know how much more motivating it is when you're aiming for a weight you dream to be rather than a weight you're told you should be or think is easily achievable – and now we have the research to prove it! "I know what it’s like to struggle with your weight and, having lost 2st 7lbs as a Slimming World member myself after joining in 2009, I also understand what a huge difference understanding how slimmers feel and offering the right kind of support can make to your chances of achieving your weight loss goals.

It’s all about support, care, encouragement and fun – and I firmly believe that’s why we regularly see members achieve their weight loss dreams too. In group they learn that slimming down doesn’t have to mean giving up any of their favourite foods, and in fact they can fill up on healthy, hearty, delicious meals just by making small changes to the way they are cooked and prepared. Many also find they have so much more energy, and become much more active by starting small and finding something fun – whether it’s walking the kids to school, a dance class or washing the car – it all absolutely counts!" Sarah never imagined it would be possible to achieve her dream. Then, after learning that you would able to lose weight enjoying normal everyday foods like fruit and vegetables, pasta, rice, potatoes, fish and lean meat, and eat as much as you wanted to fill up – without having to give up any favourite foods – she never looked back! "Since losing weight I have lots more energy meaning I’m so much more active too. I love walking my dogs and swimming. I used to think getting fit was just about spending hours in the gym or running marathons – but thanks to Slimming World I know that’s not how it has to be. Just moving a little more than usual all counts! "If anyone is thinking of joining Slimming World I’d just say ‘go for it’. Whatever you dream to lose, with Slimming World you can absolutely do it. I was nervous walking through those doors, however the warm welcome I got from the Consultant and the group and the belief they showed in me was amazing. I instantly knew there was no need to be scared and that the people in the group really understood and cared. Now I’m a target member I still attend group each week for free. I love to go along to get top tips, motivation and support – and of course to catch up with all my Slimming World buddies! I’ve changed my habits for life and know that I’ll never need to go back to being the same unhappy size I was. To join a local Slimming World group in the area, please first give the consultant a call, lots of our sessions are now full and not taking new members, each group is different and the relevant consultant can advise you the best session to join.

"It’s my dream to see all my members achieve their dreams. In my group, members set targets, share recipes, challenges and solutions and celebrate success together, which is so important to a successful journey.

Alopecia - Definition, Causes, Symptoms and Treatment Alopecia simply means hair loss (baldness). Alopecia areata is a form of hair loss from areas of the body, usually from the scalp. Alopecia areata affects both males and females. Alopecia areata does not make you feel pain and does not make you feel sick. In 1–2% of cases, the condition can spread to the entire scalp (Alopecia totalis) or to the entire epidermis (Alopecia universalis). Some people may lose more hair. Rarely, the disease causes total loss of hair on the head or complete loss of hair on the head, face, and body. Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease. Normally the immune system protects the body against infection and disease. In an autoimmune disease, the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks some part of your own body. In alopecia areata, the immune system attacks the hair follicles. On rare occasions, the person loses all of the hair on his or her head (alopecia areata totalis) or entire body (alopecia areata universalis). Alopecia is the medical term for baldness; there are various types of alopecia, including alopecia areata.

Alopecia areata tends to occur most often in children and young adults. However, it can also affect older individuals. Alopecia can certainly be the cause of psychological stress. There are several different hypotheses as to what causes alopecia areata. Genetic factors seem to play an important role since there is a higher frequency of a family. Trichotillomania is the name of a mental disorder that causes a person to pull out his/her own hair. Alopecia areata often occurs in families whose members have had asthma, hay fever, atopic eczema, or other autoimmune diseases such as thyroid disease, early-onset diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus erythematosus, vitiligo, pernicious anemia, or Addison's disease. Systemic diseases often affect hair growth either selectively or by altering the skin of the scalp.

Hyperthyroidism (too much thyroid hormone) causes hair to become thin and fine. Hypothyroidism (too little thyroid hormone) thickens both hair and skin. Androgenetic alopecia in men has been associated with several other medical conditions including coronary heart disease and enlargement of the prostate, a walnut-sized gland in males that is located below the bladder. In women, androgenetic alopecia is associated with an increased risk of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). PCOS is characterized by a hormonal imbalance that can lead to irregular menstruation, acne, excess body hair (hirsutism), and weight gain. There are several available treatments for Alopecia. Two relatively new drugs—minoxidil (Rogaine) and finasteride (Proscar)—promote hair growth in a significant minority of patents. UVB is generally used to treat skin conditions but is also used for people with severe hair loss.Steroid injections are commonly used in sites where there are small areas of hair loss on the head or especially where eyebrow hair has been lost. Anti-inflammatory drugs that are prescribed for autoimmune

diseases. Corticosteroids can be given as an injection into the scalp or other areas, orally (as a pill), or applied topically (rubbed into the skin) as an ointment, cream, or foam. Hair transplantation is completed by taking tiny plugs of skin, each containing one to several hairs, from the back side of the scalp. Another surgical procedure used to treat androgenic alopecia is scalp reduction. Cortisone pills are sometimes given for extensive scalp hair loss. Cortisone taken internally is much stronger than local injections of cortisone into the skin. It is necessary to discuss possible side effects of cortisone pills with your physician. There are various cosmetic and protective techniques that people with alopecia areata can try. Include is Using makeup to hide or minimize hair loss. Wearing sunglasses to protect the eyes from the sun and the environment. Wearing coverings (wigs, hats , or scarves) to protect the head from the elements

Are you paying double? If you have a bank account with a Credit Card, your card may be offering you several facilities that you are already paying for. Two years ago, I took a look at what my bank and credit card provided. I was horrified what I had been missing out on and what I had been paying for twice.

This may not sound like an exciting task but it is worth an hour or so of your time as it may save you over £1,000 every year. How better could you spend that money? How long does it take you to earn £1,000? Most Banks publish this information in the booklet you may have received with your card. Alternatively go online and check to see what benefits are available. You may be pleasantly surprised.

These included – holiday insurance, mobile phone insurance, car and roadside assistance, access to airport lounges, and a raft of other things associated with the account itself. In all I recon I saved around £1,200 each year on all of the various items which I was effectively paying double for!

New Speeding Fines in Place - Re-think the Need for Speed The vast majority of hardworking lorry and van drivers carry out their work within the letter of the law, but for those who may be tempted to exceed the speed limits on UK roads, recent changes to legislature mean the consequences are now far more severe. While for small infringements the changes are not too substantial, drivers caught exceeding the limit by more than 10mph are in for a very expensive lesson.

What the Changes in Fines Mean The changes in fines are significant - starting at a 150% increase. The government is hitting offenders where it hurts by basing the incremental system on a driver's weekly income, in additional to temporary driving bans or points on their licence. 

Those caught speeding under the classification Band A (1-10mph over) will incur 3 points on their licence and fines of 25-75% of their weekly wage.

For Band B offenders (11-20mph over) the penalty is 4-6 points or 7-28 days driving ban, plus a fine equivalent to 25-125% of t heir weekly income.

For Band C infringements (more than 21mph over) the fines are 125-175% of the weekly income plus 6 points or 7-56 days disqualification from driving. Keeping UK Roads Safe

UK Road Speed Limits Anyone who undertakes haulage jobs for a living (and in fact anyone who uses the road) should be familiar with the UK speed limits, although it's easy to unwittingly fall foul of the rules if you don’t understand their variations. But staying on the right side of the law and maintaining a clean licence (not to mention avoiding huge fines) is imperative for anyone who relies on haulage jobs for their livelihood – whether you're an independent owner-driver or work for a larger company. Because one thing you can be sure of is that your speed is your responsibility. For HGV drivers it's even more important to stay abreast of changes to the laws and be aware that what's signposted on the roads doesn’t necessarily apply to vehicles other than conventional cars. You also need to factor in regional variations in UK speed limits if you're carrying out haulage jobs in Wales or Scotland. For those who need a refresher, in a nutshell here are the current speed limits on UK roads (current May 2017) for HGVs. Up to 12m long and 7.5 tonnes: • Restricted road - 30mph • Single carriageway - 50mph • Dual carriageway - 60mph • Motorway - 70mph Over 7.5 tonnes: • • • •

Restricted road - 30mph Single carriageway - 50mph (Scotland 40mph) Dual carriageway - 60mph (Scotland 50mph) Motorway - 60mph

It's not just those who do haulage jobs for a living under the spotlight, all UK motorists come under the increases in speeding fines. But for those who rely on a clean licence for their livelihood, the need to adhere to understand and adhere to the laws that govern our roads is even more important. While the new penalties are extremely harsh , the FTA and transport industry experts have welcomed the increases in fines as a potentially very effective deterrent to those who flout the law and endanger other road users.

Cars, Cars, Cars, Too Many Cars Many people have dozens of questions that they ask themselves when they are buying their first car. They aren't sure what type of car they should get or if they should buy new, used, or if they should get any car at all. What are the first steps you should take and questions that you should think about when you are thinking about buying a new or new to you car?

Choose a car based on your needs. If you're going to be hauling a lot of equipment for your job, then it may be wise to get a pickup truck. There are many different types of pickup trucks out there that meet the needs of dozens of different income levels. If you're unsure about what you want, spend some time researching different types. Think about what types of material or items you'll commonly be hauling, and get a pickup truck that can meet that need.

Firstly, you must decide whether you'd like to buy a new car or a used car. The answer to this question depends primarily on your income level. If you have a steady full time job and a high income level, it may be a wise idea to buy a brand new car instead of a used one. If you are a student or if you are struggling to make ends meet, it may be wise to get a used car. If you are getting a used car, try to make sure you get your car from a reputable dealership with good customer satisfaction ratings. Always get a report before you buy your used car. This will tell you how many previous owners the car has had and what condition it is in.

If you have a large family, it may be wise to get a minivan. A minivan can help you transport the kids back and forth to school and their soccer games and their other needed occasions. When you have a family where more than one person drives, it may be wise to get a minivan and a car that seats a few additional people. This will help make transportation easier and more manageable. If you are a student, you will likely want a car that is energy efficient and reliable that will last for a long time. Choosing a car that is good with gas mileage will no doubt help with your gas bills!

Once you've decided on whether to buy a new car or used car, you should then decide on what type of car you want. There are dozens of different car companies out there. If you're unsure, spend a little time browsing the web and searching for what different types of cars that you like, but don't feel limited by a specific company. car? The answer is simply for you to decide.

There are thousands of different cars out there , and what car you will pick will decide on you and your interests. The only question is: To buy a new car or to buy a used car? The answer is simply for you to decide.

IN CINEMAS Review by Aaron Potter

DESPICABLE ME 3 So it’s safe to say that the Summer movie period has finally arrived, and what good’s a Summer without a wealth of blockbuster movies hitting cinema screens? Thankfully the Hollywood gods have graced us with lots to look forward to starting this June, from Amazonian superheroes, the return of squat yellow henchmen, and more Tom Cruise hastily running. Hot off the heels of her screen-saving appearance in last year’s Batman Vs Superman, Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman kicks us off in a big way this summer with a WWI-set origin story that tells the story of the Amazon princess turned superhero warrior. Leaving her home island of Themyscira and making way for London, the movie looks set to show us a battle of the gods with Wonder woman facing off against Ares and Doctor Poison. Closely sprinting onto the scene soon after is Tom Cruise’s The Mummy, a globe-trotting horror adventure film that looks to mix sand and scares, with the titular mummy played by Kingsman’s Sofia Boutella aiming to give Cruise a tougher time than Brendan Fraser originally had in 1999.

Rounding out June’s jam-packed schedule is the return of Gru and friends in Despicable Me 3, so prepare for cuteness and hilarity overload when a certain sibling arrives for a fun team-up. The fun doesn’t stop there as Cineworld Bristol and Direct Local Magazines are teaming up once again to give viewers a chance to win 2 free cinema tickets. Just fill out the word search on the next page.

Movies don’t get bigger or more epic than this, so be sure to strap into your cinema seat!

Hands up who’s looking forward to half term carpet stains? So half term is upon us again and we all end up with stains on our carpets at some point or other. Here's Floor Managers guide to tackling the top five: 1. Poster paints. This will take dedication due to the colour pigments but they are water based so you should have success. If dry first scrape up as much as you can then the same applies if the paint is wet, simply flush, flush, flush through with water and a white cloth until clean. 2. Mud. First let it dry then vacuum or brush up as much as you can then apply the same process as above and rinse and blot until it comes up clean. 3. Chocolate. Scrape away the excess again and use the same method but this time use cool water so as not to melt the fat in the chocolate and spread it too far.

4. Dog/cat poo. Use the rinse and blot method as above. The difference with this type of stain of course is the smell. You want to act as quickly as possible before it soaks too far into the carpet (some poos are runny, thats life) then you will need an expert to come out and deal with it for you so call Floor Manager who will sort it in a jiffy. 5. Nail Polish. Blot up as much as you can if wet and then use the rinse and blot method. However if you've spotted it late and it's dried you need to break down the components of it and the best way to do this is nail polish remover. Use sparingly but moisten the polish until it starts to spread and then adapt the blot and rinse process. Voila! Your worst carpet nightmares dealt with. However should the above processes not work for you of course Floor Manager can help. Just give Adrian or Amanda a call on 01934 611442. We'll even throw in some Half Price carpet protection to help you out even more! Now go and enjoy your half term!
