There is an old saying that all roads lead to Rome or should that be Brislington! GOVERNMENT
There is an old saying that all roads lead to Rome, I often wonder if that should be changed to Brislington! We do seem to have more than our fair share of commuter traffic whether it be the Bath or Wells Road, West Town Lane or Talbot Hill.
Some of them still have track and could be linked up to the regional rail network. But others like our very own Brislington rail line will never carry passengers again, but could be opened up to pedestrians and cyclists as a safe and pleasant green route. Both myself and my colleague Andrew Varney are keen cyclists and so have launched a campaign to open up this old line as part of a safe route from Whitchurch to the City Centre.
There are a number of schemes to tackle both the traffic congestion and its associated pollution. It’ is estimated that over 180 deaths occur each year in Bristol alone from air pollution (PM10) and that our air is outside safe health limits. But what do we do about it? Of course we need to use our roads smarter and better use of traffic signals and cameras to aid traffic flow. We need a fully integrated transport system going to where people want to go, at a fare that is reasonable. But we do have a hidden resource that could and should be pressed into service the City’s old railway lines. Very much like the very successful Bristol to Bath railway path it could be a green lung for our local community. Who knows it might get more nervous cyclists to get on their bikes. It would be quicker, more fun and improve local air quality. A good use for an old transport asset in the 21st Century. Article by Councillor Jos Clark Liberal Democrat Brislington West Ward

The number of LPAs granted has tripled – do you understand the benefits of having an LPA? The number of Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) granted annually has tripled between 2010 and 2015. The increase in the number of LPAs being granted may be due to a drive to increase public awareness and to encourage people to plan for the future.
With some experts reporting that as much as 60% of the UK population does not have a Will, it is important that people understand the benefits of planning ahead, regardless of our age or health. If you have any questions or would like to discuss Estate Planning options, please don’t hesitate to contact us for more information on 0117 322 6322 or info@legallysecure.co.uk
The LPA is a legal document that appoints someone to help you make your own decisions or make decisions on your behalf. Typically, this would be a member of your immediate family, a loved one or a legal professional. Having an LPA in place means you can entrust your decision making to someone close to you in the event that you are no longer able to make those decisions for yourself.

" Brexit means Brexit" -but what does that mean for Bristol? We all know that the UK voted to leave the European Union in the Referendum on 23rd June. Whilst nationally, the vote split was 52% opting to leave, 48% wanting to remain in Europe, here in Bristol there was a 72% vote to remain. Voters in Bristol West were the second highest in the country in support of remaining, reflecting the high proportion who work or have worked in the aviation industries, Rolls Royce, our city's two world class universities and the NHS.
For ordinary citizens, we are already feeling the first impacts and they are not good. Firstly, the pound has fallen in value by 18%, we have lost our solid credit rating in world financial markets, resulting in the £ now being equal to the Euro. Holidays will cost more, but the impact of this fall in the value of the £ will have a major impact on those living overseas, in Spain for example. They are probably worried sick and weren't allowed to vote in the Referendum. When you think of the basic necessities that we take for granted like coffee, tea, bananas -all are imported, a never-ending list -and usually paid for in dollars; they will go up.
Many Bristolians and all of those major local employers are now wondering fearfully what "Brexit" will mean for them. Bristol City Council received £22 million of EU funding from 2005 2015. The city's two universities receive over £20 million a year from EU sources. The Mayor, Marvin Rees is so concerned that the day after the referendum he set up a Bristol Brexit response group to better understand the impact of leaving the EU on our city. Bristol city region has the most productive economy outside of London with strong potential for digitial and technology businesses as well as aerospace and defence, financial and professional, creative and low carbon sectors. All of these rely on keeping up to date and indeed in advance of developments in their sector elsewhere in the world. Any deterioration of market access could be damaging to local companies, but the uncertainty is growing as each day passes.
Last evening Nestle, makers of KitKat as well as Nescafe and lots of other things, said that they are "considering all options" to cope with the pound's 18% fall. The thought of more expensive chocolate and probably smaller bars led me to think of wine that is bound to go up too. More people are getting more pessimistic about the impact of Brexit upon our standard of living. So what is this Conservative Government of multi-millionaires doing about it? Answer - they are deeply split by their own admission. The Minister responsible, David Davies says "If we don't get a trade deal by 2019, we face a cliff edge". How reassuring is that? Open Europe has estimated a fall in British trade by 16%, and foreign investment in the UK to drop by 20%.Don't panic, Boris will save us. I don't think so... Me? I am going to stock up on Nescafe gold (other brands are available) Chocolate and wine to help get through the hard times ahead. Article by Eileen Means

Base Radio expansion Base Radio has recently moved to a brand new purpose built studio located at Action Indoor Sports. This will allow us to continue the fantastic work that we do within the community and gives us far greater reach to the projects and causes that require our support given our fantastic new partners and the history of great work that they have done previously in reaching out to and supporting the local area. We are passionate about the community and will always look to help and support any cause wherever we can and we are immensely proud to be working with Action Indoor Sports and their great team in bringing more and more of this to fruition in the future. We also will be moving into corporate offices at the Withywood Centre effective 1st November 2016. This will give us a base to carry out our operations away from the studio environment, but will also allow us to deal with the local community in an efficient and professional manner as well as also having an interview area and editing suite set up for us to carry out and record discussions for broadcast at a later date.
How to listen to Base Radio This is the question we get asked the most, as we are currently internet based (though we are looking for support to fund our quest for an FM/ digital licence!) but here is how you can listen to Bristol’s finest radio station: To listen on a PC, android or iPhone - log onto our website www.baseradiobristol.co.uk or you can download the free app in the app store. From all other devices download the free app in GooglePlay or log in to www.tunein.com and search Base Radio Bristol.
The future is exceptionally bright for Base radio, and in turn for the community that we are passionate and proud to support.
Base Radio hire and personal appearances Base Radio and its presenters are available for private hire and also for personal appearances, and can provide a full range of equipment depending upon the individual requirements of your event. Conkers, Acorns and Antifreeze Autumn has arrived The leaves are changing and the temperatures are dropping now that autumn has arrived. Watch out for these autumnal hazards and protect your pets at this time of year:
Protect your outdoor pets from the colder temperatures – rabbit and guinea pig hutches should be moved indoors or to a more sheltered area such as a garage or shed. Provide them with extra bedding to keep them warm.
Antifreeze is extremely deadly to pets, and with its sweet palatable taste it can be very tempting for animals to ingest. Please seek veterinary attention immediately if you suspect your pet has had access to antifreeze.
Beware of cats under cars or bonnets, always honk the horn of your car or bang on the bonnet before starting it as cats tend to use cars as a bed for the night.
Conkers and acorns can make your pet very poorly if eaten or swallowed, causing gastrointestinal upsets or blockages.
Dark mornings and evenings can make walking the dog less appealing, however, make sure you still keep up their regular exercise otherwise you could see the pounds starting to pile on.
Fleas and ticks can be a real problem during the autumn season, particularly with the central heating being switched on. Ensure you use a suitable prevention treatment during this time and check your pet regularly for these nasty critters. Fireworks can cause a lot of undue stress for some pets. Be sure to use calming pheromone diffusers and provide a safe hiding place for them. Visit our website www.highcroftvet.co.uk for more tips.
Keep your personal safety in mind when walking your dog during the darker hours. Stay in well-lit areas and ideally with somebody else, and always carry your mobile phone with you in case of emergencies. If you are worried about your pet or would like further information on any of the above, please do not hesitate to call Brislington Veterinary Surgery on 0117 9715115.

Weigh to go Sarah! You’re solid Gold Local slimming expert, Sarah Bryant is celebrating after being recognised for the exceptional work she does to support people in Whitchurch and Hengrove to achieve their dream weight and for the super service she provides to her over 250 group members every week.Sarah was invited to Slimming World’s ‘Gold and Pearl Day’, hosted at the exclusive Nottingham Belfry hotel on October 7th, for being among the organizations top 80 most highest-achieving consultants Sarah is a Consultant for the Whitchurch and Hegrove Slimming World groups, and the invite puts her in the top 2.5% of the organisation’s 4,500 Slimming World Consultants across the UK, meaning South Bristol is home to some of the best slimming support in the country. As part of the day, Sarah, who graduated from the Slimming World Academy in 2009 was invited to discuss best practice and share her tips on delivering a first-class weight management service to ensure fantastic weight losses and members’ success. The attendees also heard from the company Directors about the organisation’s key developments and plans for the future. All guests were treated to a healthy, satisfying Food Optimising lunch and drinks reception at the Belfry resort. In the afternoon, attendees were invited to take part in an interactive workshop, hosted by Slimming World’s Chief Executive Officer, Caryl Richards, on how to supercharge support to members to help them achieve and stay at their dream weight. Slimming World has 47 years of experience in helping people to lose weight and lead healthier and happier lives. Its famous Food Optimising eating plan, based on the science of satiety and energy density, empowers members with the knowledge of how to satisfy their appetites and lose weight without calorie counting or obsessive weighing and measuring. Group support, led by Consultants who have lost weight themselves, is based on a deep understanding of the challenges faced by overweight people and recognition that those who struggle with weight carry a double burden, the weight itself and a burden of guilt and shame about their weight. This support helps slimmer's to make sustainable changes to their behaviour so that they can lose weight and keep it off for the long-term. Sarah says: "When the event invite dropped through my letterbox I was buzzing with excitement – it was such an honour to be treated to this special day by Slimming World, who always look after us so exceptionally well.
Having the chance to get together with other high-achieving Consultants from across the country to share ideas and experiences is yet another example of the superb support that we get as Slimming World franchisees. My job is flexible and rewarding, and although I’m self-employed I feel wholly supported. While Slimming World has been around for 47 years, the company invests hugely in innovation – to continuously improve our service to members and in our training. It’s a testament to the fact that after all this time Slimming World is still the UK’s leading weight loss organisation, and we’re poised to go global. "The event itself was inspiring and motivating from start to finish, I think I spent most of the day smiling from ear to ear! Thanks to the interactive sessions, I headed home absolutely brimming with ideas, and I can’t wait to use what I’ve learnt to take the support I give to the members of my group to the next level. It’s so important to me that they get the very best possible service to achieve their weight loss dreams. I know what it’s like to struggle with your weight and, having lost 2 1/2 stone as a Slimming World member myself after joining, I also understand what a huge difference understanding how slimmer's feel and offering the right kind of support can make to your chances of achieving long-term success. Being able to eat to satisfy my appetite on lots of normal everyday foods like fruit and vegetables, pasta, rice potatoes and lean meat makes a big difference. "The invite to the event, and being one of Slimming World’s Gold Consultants, belongs to my members too. They’re the ones who make my groups the success that they are, with their fabulous commitment, regular attendance, the lovely warm welcome they give new members and, it goes without saying, their impressive weight losses. So I’d like to congratulate them on this award too." To join Sarah’s award-winning groups either pop along or give her a call on 07879 443888.

Taking Care of your Motorcycle
There are motorcycle fairings kit which are in most online shops that will make your rides as safe and still looking sleek as possible. You need to get the motorcycle fairings that are safe but it also does not mean that it has to be expensive. You can buy high quality motorcycle fairings and these are usually made from ABS material.
Just like any other vehicles, motorcycles should be kept properly maintained since it is also important to make it go longer miles. You need to follow the right things to do so that you can have your rides as safe as possible. One of the things you should do is to change its oil. You need to follow the manufacturer’s schedule of changing oil because it will make the engines last. This is especially important in dusty environments too. To know which oil you should use in your motorcycle, you need to check the manual to avoid malfunctions. Also, you need to clean the air filter as often as possible to make it last more. Some dust particles may have been stuck in your motorcycle filters and if it is not removed then it might damage your rides too. Another thing you need to do to take care of your motorcycle would be to ride it gently. You need to treat it as careful as possible because it is a critical kind of vehicle and if you do not treat it right, it may not go longer miles than it used to before. Another thing you should do is to air up the motorcycle by getting it maintained with the right air pressure in the tyres so it can go longer. By using the wrong air pressure, it may also affect the handling of your motor. Also, it can affect the mileage of your fuel. You also need to grease up your bearings so you can maintain the gears and the steering as dirt free as possible. This is not only applicable to race motorcycles but also to road legal motorcycles as well. You can have your motorcycle fairings be safe too to prevent the riders from harm.
The motorcycle fairings kit can make your rides look better with the many colours available with the online shops that sell motorcycle parts. Choose which motorcycle fairing fits your ride and make it look better with these parts. It is important that you should take care of your motorcycle so that it can last longer and then you do not have to need it be repaired several times. Take care of your vehicle then you would not have to spend so much because it will always be in top shape.

5 most dangerous distractive driving habits Countless distracting activities can divert driver attention and any one of them can increase the risk of a crash. 1.“Lost in thought or daydreaming. Detaching from reality can be fatal and lead to car crashes. Treat driving as a complicated task requiring your full attention 2. Using a cell phone or smartphone. Drivers should not use a cell phone, whether handheld or hands-free while behind the wheel. While many believe that hands-free phones are safer than handheld phones, numerous research studies, however proved otherwise.
4. Grooming. Women putting on makeup while driving often adjust the rear-view mirror toward them and then use it to view their make-up. That significantly reduces your ability to scan traffic behind you and notice if you’re being tailgated, a car is speeding up on you and you should move over or if emergency vehicle are approaching from behind. 5. Eating or drinking. Eating while driving is the worst form of distracted driving for a driver. Most near miss accidents are caused by distracted drivers fussing with food and drinks.
3.Talking to passengers or looking at other people in the car may be just as dangerous for drivers as talking on a cell phone.

Car insurance tips from 1st Gear!
Policies differ greatly in their available features and options, and a number of firms give you incentives to jump on board with them. You can actually cash in some big savings when searching for the correct insurance policy.
The kind or the class of vehicle you drive does make a very big difference. Sports cars, such as Aston Martins , Ferraris etc. all are very expensive and cost more than your usual economical car, for the reason of the type of owners who buys them. The driving history of your vehicle will play an important role. The better and clean record you have, the less you will pay. At times you can also find auto insurance with completely online companies. Some of these companies provide really cheap auto insurance.
Many insurance policies provide death and accidental cover. One should never buy simply because a company is providing a cheap policy; never forget to take a careful watch at the features the companies offer, and most of all their overall reliability and reputation.
You can very quickly compare quotes from a number of different companies, by doing a thorough search. However, be extremely certain that you compare the features that are included in the policy. For example, a company might look cheaper than another, but in actuality they will exclude some important elements that will be necessary for the insurance. Thus one must understand that cheaper is not better always, especially in car insurance.
Teenagers have high risk of accidents, probably because of their reckless driving habits. This adds one more important reason for auto insurance. Also, there are a number of other options that you can add in your auto insurance. Some of these options could include breakdown cover, damage liability and medical cover. Some firms will charge you extra for these options, and some will include these options standard. Therefore , go around and see different shops before buying. Vehicle insurance has also been made compulsory in some countries.

Bulb upgrades! One of the most common automotive problems this time of year is a lack of visibility. It's already dark on our journey home from work, whether you're riding a bicycle or driving a car it would do you good to think about upgrading your lights to something a lot brighter and clearer. The first thing you need to remember when choosing your car bulbs is that when you go brighter, you'll need to go whiter to reduce eye strain; nothing is more dangerous than driving with tired eyes.
There are many bulbs available on the market that can be up to 130% brighter than the standard bulb. All upgrades are available in an original equipment direct fit so if you know which bulbs fit your car visit any car accessory store and speak to a member of staff. By Rob Mccauley Motaman

Nature in winter Remember at this time of year the birds and other wild animals can begin to find it more difficult to find food, so if you can spare some time to help them in whatever way you can, would be a wonderful way to do something good for the planet and her inhabitants. If you work with Angels, or other Beings of Light or practice Meditation, you could ask for inspiration to guide you with this. REMEMBER TO KEEP ALL ANIMALS SAFE DURING THIS TIME OF FIREWORKS AND BONFIRES.
Enjoy your Samhain (Halloween) and the fireworks and fires, BE SAFE AND HAPPY. By Marie from Akasha
