Have you made any resolutions? If you would like to improve your physical and mental health, meet friends and enjoy new challenges, I can highly recommend joining a singing group. ‘Group singing is cheaper than therapy, healthier than drinking, and certainly more fun than working out. It is the one thing in life where feeling better is pretty much guaranteed.’ If you are female, and love to sing, then check us out on www.bristol-fashion.org.uk or come along to one of our rehearsals at Four Acres Academy, BS13 8RB where you can find out more about singing Barbershop style! Bristol Fashion ended 2015 with our annual awards night and dinner, which is always a very enjoyable evening, celebrating our joint and individual achievements over the year, with members contributing ‘turns’ comic and serious, Barbershop and non-Barbershop. In November we were privileged to participate in ‘A Song for Skyla’ at the invitation of our friend and ex -member Yvonne. At the Salvation Army in Easton we joined with singers and musicians from the Salvation Army and our ‘brothers in harmony’ the Great Western Chorus to celebrate the short life of Yvonne’s granddaughter, Skyla. An arrangement of ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’ together with ‘Angels Watching Over Me’ was a beautifully sung by young singers from the Salvation Army and was a fitting tribute to a beautiful little girl. The evening also raised over £2,000 for the hospice which supported Skyla and her family, and this will go towards the construction of a new hospice building. Our plans for 2016 include entering the Bristol Music festival and the Cheltenham Music Festival as well as competing as usual in the LABBS annual convention, in Harrogate. We are also planning a show in June – WATCH THIS SPACE!

Ask the vet How can I tell if my pet has worms? It can be difficult to tell if your pet has intestinal worms as, during early stages of infection, they may show no signs at all. However, if a worm infection is left untreated, you may see symptoms such as loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhoea, a pot belly, ‘scooting’, dull coat or excessive licking of the bottom. It is important to remember that even without these symptoms your pet could still have worms. In the UK cats and dogs can become infected by roundworms, tapeworms, hookworms, whipworms and lungworms and, unless you treat your pet regularly, worms are difficult to avoid. Worm eggs are often passed in the faeces of an infected cat or dog. The eggs can then lay dormant in the soil for up to a year, which means you are also at risk of carrying the eggs into your home on your shoes or your pet’s fur.

Tapeworms can be transmitted by an infected host like fleas; for this reason we strongly recommend eliminating fleas as an important part of worm control. If your cat or dog likes to hunt birds and small mammals, be aware that these can also carry tapeworms. Roundworms can also pose a risk to humans, in particular to children. In extreme cases it can cause blindness - though this is very rare. To treat intestinal worms, we advise using prescription treatments that are reliable and well tested. Our usual recommendation is a monthly treatment of drops on the back of the neck (that will also prevent flea infestations) and a palatable worming tablet to be given at least every 3 months. However, we do base our worming recommendation on your pet’s lifestyle so the frequency and/or product will vary.

Call Brislington Veterinary Surgery on 0117 971 5115 To find out about which treatments are available and which will suit your pet best.

Emma is set to share her slimming secrets A slimmer who transformed her life by losing 3 stone is using her success to shape a whole new career helping other people change their lives for the better too. Emma Nicholls joined her local Slimming World group in Bristol 2 years ago and dropped 3 dress sizes. Now Emma has trained as a Consultant for Slimming World, the UK’s leading slimming club, and is opening her own group at Ashton Vale Primary School on Monday 28th December 2015. With the government figures revealing that 24% men and 25% of women, have an obese BMI of more than 30Kg/m2. Emma says her new role has never been more important She says: "Obesity is becoming such a huge issue across the UK. When I first joined Slimming World as a member, I never dreamed that I would end up helping other people to lose weight but now I just can’t wait to get started. It’s a privilege for me to be able to pass on the experience, insight and understanding that helped me, so that I can give my members the support they need to get to target.

"Slimming World isn’t just about changing what you eat. It’s all about getting the support to choose a healthier lifestyle. I have had a couple of sporting injuries since starting out and still have been getting the results at the scales. So it doesn’t matter if you aren’t very mobile or don’t like exercise, there are easy ways to just become a bit more active." "One year into my weight loss I fell pregnant with my first child and was worried I would pile on the weight, however the diet, which was developed in partnership with the Royal College of Midwives, is safe and easy and with permission from my midwife I continued through my pregnancy. Now 9 months after giving birth I have reached my original target and am looking to continue my weight loss journey" "On top of that, I’ve got a new career. It’s well-paid and the hours fit around my family, but best of all I’m doing something that I’m passionate about. As a slimmer myself I know how hard it can be and I couldn’t have lost 3 stone without my Consultant and my group. Sharing recipes and other ideas, and overcoming disappointments as well as celebrating success were all part of the journey, so there’ll be lots of support, encouragement and fun at my Slimming World group." Emma’s Slimming World group will be held at Ashton Vale Primary School, Avebury Road every Monday at 7:30pm from Monday 28th December 2015. For more information or to join Emma’s group either pop along her sessions have been running from 28th December or call her on 07701030460

Like a lot of slimmers, I had tried to lose weight so many times before by following numerous diets but they were never sustainable because I’d always get tired of restricting what I ate. I thought I was destined to struggle with my weight for the rest of my life, but when I came to Slimming World it was different. I never felt like I was on a diet. The eating plan encourages you to eat lots of filling foods like pasta, rice, potatoes and lean meat and fish, you are never hungry and no foods are banned so there’s no deprivation. I couldn’t believe I’d found a way to lose weight without starving myself."

Total PC Support From Martin Web browsers vs search engines vs your home page Here’s a quick guide to some basic Web terms which I find my customers occasionally confuse. Knowing what they mean can help you to help me quicker, as well as keep your PC running smoothly and protect you from malicious software. So, what’s the difference between a Web Browser, a Search Engine, and a Home Page?

Web Browser A web browser is a program through which you can view pages on the World Wide Web. Firefox, Internet Explorer and Google Chrome are all web browsers Risks: As a browser is a downloaded program, you need to make sure you get it from a trusted source, otherwise it could be infected with something nasty. Get your web browser from the software’s official website, such as www.google.com/chrome for Google Chrome.

The other meaning for ‘home page’ is often the ‘front’ page of a website, such as www.shipshapecomputers.co.uk, as opposed to www.shipshapecomputers.co.uk/guides, which is not the website’s home page. Risks: Although you are no more at risk from a website which you have set as your home page than you would be at risk when visiting it at any other time, if you notice that your home page has been changed without your permission then you know that something is tampering with your settings, and you need to take action.

Know Your PC The key to all this knowledge is to know what your web browser is, which search engine you use, and which page is your browser’s home page. Then, if anything changes when you weren’t expecting it to, you know that something needs attention. Call me, Martin, at Ship shape Computers if you think something like this has happened, and I’ll be more than happy to sort it out for you! For more info on this topic in a longer article, visit www.shipshapecomputers.co.uk/guides

Search Engine A search engine is a website, or a tool within it, which allows you to search for web pages which contain words or phrases of your choice. For example, going to Google.com brings up the Google Search Engine, where you type in something like ‘laptop reviews’, and see search results relevant to that phrase. Risks: There’s little threat if you use a reputable search engine, however beware that some of the results are adverts, and might not be what you think they are. Some well-known search engines do not make the distinction between adverts and ‘real’ search results obvious.

Home Page This is perhaps the most confusing of the terms, as there are actually two different meanings. The most important one for you is when it refers to the page which appears automatically when you open your Web Browser. This could be something like MSN.com or another news site, or the Google.com website, or something else altogether – it’s your choice.

Councillors Surgery Happy 2016 Everyone! I always feel optimistic in the New Year and I hope that you do too. I sincerely hope that 2016 brings you health, enough wealth and happiness. As I write this, Astronaut Tim Peake is blasting off into orbit and we are all very proud and wish him well. Isn’t it interesting that people can be sent into space, yet currently and for some time to come, driving into, out of, and across Bristol is so difficult? I was recently caught up in the gridlock last Tuesday when the traffic light system in the Centre decided it needed a rest day.

Over the past few weeks, indeed months, we have had to put up with roadworks on the Bath Road, thankfully just finished. How long before they are replaced? Any bets, anyone? The Arena Bridge works that have caused the closure of Cattle Market Road (a useful back run for us locals) have been extended to next August. Whitby Road, another alternative route at busy times, is closed for bridge works until next February. Result: congestion.

But this was only the worst – what am I saying “only” the worst?- example of lots of delays getting to and from Brislington and Bristol City centre.

And when you eventually get near the City Centre, you meet the traffic tailbacks from the Metrobust roadworks on the Centre, blocking lanes off. I’d park and walk, but RPZs don’t allow. On a totally serious note, I do wish the Mayor and Cabinet would agree to a proper independent study on the effects of Residents Parking Zones on small businesses in this city. Each week we hear of businesses closing and moving elsewhere or shoppers going elsewhere like Cribbs Causeway where they are allowed to park. Bristol is the regional capital of the South West; the economic impact of all these restrictions and delays must be severe on local businesses.

Our lovely A4 Bath Road is full; anyone who travels along it frequently can tell you that. But count your blessings, it will only get worse when the Arena opens! As said in an earlier article, there is no car parking for people attending events at the Arena. I especially feel for the residents of Edward and Chatsworth Roads when events are on.

More people use their cars in winter, plus the Christmas shopping trips show that, despite a welcome increase of people using the buses, people living in the suburbs like Brislington need their cars; how else to carry tools and shopping? So why, oh why can’t traffic be better managed in Bristol?

My co-Councillor Rhian Greaves and I are opposing this lack of nearby car parking for the sake of Brislington people going about their business, but it has seemed that the Highways and traffic planners have it in for Brislington; or, are they trying to turn it into an island, peaceful and traffic –free?

Eileen Means Labour Councillor Brislington West

Welcome to 2016! Seeing as this is my first article for Direct Local and it happens to fall in January, I thought this would be a great place to run through some of the awesome movies coming up in the first half of this year! There are 2 flicks coming out next month that I couldn't be more excited about! First up we have 'Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.' As the name suggests, it's a retelling of Jane Austen's Classic love story, but with some zombies thrown in for good measure! Based on the book of the same name, PP&Z is sure to be one of the most fun films of the year! Hot on the heels of the zombie/love story mashup is the first of the year's superhero adventures in the form of Deadpool! If you're familiar with the X-Men movie universe, then you may recognise Deadpool from the less-than-great Wolverine Origins movie. Well fear not, because this year's Deadpool looks MUCH better! Sticking much more closely to its comic book roots, Deadpool is set to be the first R-Rated movie based on a Marvel property, and if you've ever read a Deadpool comic then you already know how much fun this is going to be. If you haven't read a Deadpool comic, you really should - they're hilarious!

Coming up in March is one of the most eagerly anticipated films of the year. Batman V Superman. Dawn of Justice. All I really need to say about this is BATMAN! SUPERMAN! WONDER WOMAN!

Next, let's fast-forward to May and the film I'm most looking forward to next year; Captain America: Civil War. This film isn't so much Captain America 3, it's more like Avengers 2.5. The only Avengers missing are Thor & Hulk, but thankfully we have AntMan, Black Panther and a certain friendly neighbourhood Spider -Man to fill the gap. Judging from the first trailer that wasreleased last month, as well as pretty much every other Marvel Studios film, this is set to be the film of the year! It’s Captain America & friends Vs. Iron Man & friends, what more do you need? Also in May, we have the eighth instalment in the everpopular X-Men franchise - X-Men: Apocalypse. The first trailer dropped last month, and it looks absolutely stunning! Rounding out the first half of the year we have Central Intelligence –a buddy cop starring The Rock & Kevin Hart. If you ask me any comedy that casts The Rock as a bullied geek has to be good! Add in the pitch –perfect humour of Hart, and you’re guaranteed to have a winner.

So there you have it, film fans - the films I’m most looking forward to over the first half of 2016. If you enjoy my rambling, please take a listen to my hilarious (and quite sweary) podcast, Kenco & Mac, over at my website - kencoandmac.com. We talk all about movies, TV shows, video games - you know, the cool stuff! Best of all, it’s totally free! Until next month, may the force be with you.

Dry January 2016 It is with a wry smile that the topic of our article this month, “Dr January” extolling the virtues of abstinence and self-regulation was written just before the start of annual festivities, over-indulgence and for many, binge drinking. Christmas and the holiday period is for many synonymous with booze-fuelled revelry and merry-making leading into the all too familiar period of contemplation, reflection and regret channelling the way for New Year’s resolutions to get fit, get motivated and yearning for transformative change. The annual pilgrimage of zealous would-be gym rats, subscribing to all manner of things including humiliating fat camps, detachment through yoga and meditation, sado-masochistic cross-fit regimes and punishing spinning and kettle bell sessions are the polar opposite of the gorging and bingeing of a few weeks earlier. Perhaps some moderation might be in order! Last January saw the first Dry January where participants were challenged to stay off the booze for 31 days. Doubtless many saw this as no challenge at all and set off with gusto and much aplomb shrugging away that hint of reservation that dared to suggest that this might be tougher than anticipated. The gallant strides of the first few days or ten make way for bargaining and deal-brokering where the less resolute begin questioning the purpose of such a radical course of action. If this sounds familiar then you may have more attachment to the booze than you care to admit. The cunning, baffling and powerful allure of the demon drink has a habit of convincing its devotees that they have nothing to prove, that the endeavour is pointless, futile or just silly. One might wonder about the origins of this compelling and alluring dialogue. From whence or whom does this originate? That is the question. Images of Gollum from Lord of the Rings might spring to mind or perhaps the guitar rifts of that Stones Classic “Sympathy for the Devil”. But I digress. Social and occasional drinkers will marvel at this loss of momentum with a nonchalant take-it-or-leave-it attitude. But to judge others is to not fully appreciate how the subtle and powerful tentacles of addiction first lovingly caress and then envelop problem drinkers before gradually dragging them down with awesome force and ferocity. The campaign is organised by Alcohol Concern and is accessible online. Health benefits include weight loss, better sleep, clearer skin and improving finances. Active participants are encouraged to donate some of their economic gains to the charity to improve awareness and tackle the harms caused by alcohol to the individual and society.

A shocking statistic on their website reveals that 93,500 babies under one live with a parent who is a problem drinker. In this day and age one does not have to look very far to see the harmful and corrosive effects that excessive consumption can have on families and communities leaving the sufferer on a downward spiral of hopelessness, loss and isolation. The recession since 2009 ensures that these are grim and difficult times indeed for many with the lonely, elderly and vulnerable seeking solace in alcohol. Children of alcoholics are more likely to become alcoholic and the cycle of abuse is perpetuated for another generation. This cycle may extend to other patterns of dysfunction and abuse and it is only then that one can realise how ignorance and apathy can lie at the root of what we call evil. Chances are that those who can succeed and complete Dry January and perhaps donate to a noble cause will do so and are not the ones who need to worry. Perhaps some self-reflection might make them cut-back or even stop altogether. But the second tier of habitual drinkers may have a tougher time of it. An old joke goes: A social drinker, a heavy drinker and an alcoholic go to see their GP who promptly announces them all alcoholics. The casual drinker is shocked and changes his lifestyle and becomes teetotal that very day. The heavy drinker after much concern and soulsearching changes his pattern and successfully cuts right down permanently. The alcoholic shrugs his shoulders and changes his GP! The crux of this illustrates that those who would really benefit from sobriety will be oblivious to this campaign or anything else for that matter that questions their reliance on ethanol. Pride and fear will make them rationalise it away or ridicule it. But those in the middle might benefit from some deep and honest self-appraisal. A healthy self-examination of your drinking habits and the true cost of alcohol may yield surprising results. Honesty, open-mindedness and willingness are the key traits of a scientific and enquiring mind. However dogged determination to continue and contempt prior to investigation are the hallmarks of the fundamentalist and there are none so fanatical as the addicted. So as Captain Jack Scarlett wisely put it, “The problem is not the problem. The problem is your attitude to the problem” and you may find that your attitude towards Dry January speaks volumes. If you or somebody you know has a problem with alcohol, call the experts.... Alcoholics Anonymous.
