Breast Cancer
Awareness
This article is brought to you by Hengrove Pharmacy (Tel: 0117 300 5446) and we hope you enjoy learning about our topic this month. Breast Cancer is the most common form of cancer in the UK and it claims lives of 12,000 people each year. Cancers are abnormal cell growths with potential to invade or impact on other areas of the body. Originating in the breast tissues, this is the most common cancer in the UK. Each year 50,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK alone. Breast cancer survival is improving but it still claims the lives of 1000 women each month. More women than ever are surviving breast cancer thanks to better awareness, better screening and better treatments. An estimated five out of six women diagnosed with breast cancer in England and Wales survive for at least five years. One in eight women in the UK will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. This is a worrying statistic and chances are every one of us will be directly or indirectly affected by its existence. Breast cancer in men is rare with about 350 men diagnosed each year. In other cases early detection and treatment are paramount in minimising morbidity and mortality and improving the outlook for all.
Signs & symptoms Breast tissue is found in the breast, upper chest and the armpit. Each breast contains 15-20 glands called lobes, where milk is produced in women who are breast feeding. These lobes are connected to the nipple by tubes called ducts. The structure of the lobes and ducts is a bit like the branches of a tree. Breast cancer usually begins within smaller structures of the lobes. Much if the rest of the breast is fatty tissue. The breast and armpit also contain lymph nodes and vessels carrying lymph fluid, blood vessels. Possible signs and symptoms include: a new lump, abnormal bleeding, a prolonged cough, unexplained weight loss, and a change in bowl movements among others . While these symptoms may indicate cancer, they may also occur due to other issues. Your pharmacist or GP will be able to advise accordingly. Please get your concerns checked out as early actions can improve your treatment options massively. Sometimes, breast cancer spreads from the breast or armpit and begins to grow in distant parts of the body. This is called secondary breast cancer (also know as advanced or metastatic breast cancer). Secondary breast cancer cannot be cured, but treatments can help to slow its progress, lower the chances of it spreading further (metastasising )
and help relieve symptoms. It’s quite normal for breasts to differ slightly in shape and size and vary during periods and pregnancy. They also change as we get older, for example by becoming softer. Being breast aware means getting to know how your breasts look and feel normally, so you can look out for any unusual changes and get them checked out by your doctor. Most of breast cancer are found by women noticing unusual changes, taking the initiative and visiting their doctor. The earlier breast cancer is found the better chance of beating it - so it’s important to make regular checks.
Breast Awareness - It’s as simple as TLC No one knows your body better than you and everyone will have their own way of touching and looking for changes– there’s no special technique and you don’t need any training. It’s good to get into the habit of doing this regularly—maybe when you’re in the bath or shower, or while getting dressed in the mornings. Touch your breasts. Can you feel anything unusual? Look for changes. Is there nay changes in shape or texture. Check anything unusual with your doctor. If untreated, breast cancers can grow bigger, taking over more surrounding breast tissue. Breast cancer that has not spread beyond the breast or armpits is known as early breast cancer. However, sometimes breast cancer cells break away from the original cancer and enter and travel through the blood or lymph vessels. They may settle in other areas of the breast or in the lymph nodes of the breast, forming new tumours. They may also spread to distant areas of the body where they can be form new tumours, called secondary Breast cancer. Not all tumours are cancer. If the tumour cells don’t have—and are very likely to gain—the ability to grow into neighbouring tissue, they are called benign tumours often don't need treatment and are

Causes
Ultrasound
Tobacco use is the cause of about 22% of cancer deaths. Another 10% is due to obesity, a poor diet, lack of physical activity , and consumption of alcohol. Other factors include certain infections, excessive exposure to sunlight and radiation, and environmental pollutants.
Ultrasound scans create a picture of your breast using sound waves. If you’re under 40 (or 35 in Scotland ), you’ll probably be scanned using a ultrasound as this method provides better images of younger woman’s breasts - which tend to have denser breast tissue
Many cancers including breast cancer can be prevented by not smoking, maintain a healthy weight, not drinking too much alcohol, eating plenty of vegetables, fruits and whole grains, being vaccinated against certain infectious diseases, not eating too much red meat, avoiding too much exposure to sunlight. Higher sugar, high fat and meat based diets and greater than moderate alcohol consumption appear to be causative factors as does being overweight/obese and being inactive.
Biopsy
Diagnosis If your doctor or screening service refers you to a breast clinic you will have a series of tests. Commonly, women have up to three tests, know as ‘triple assessment’. This involves a physical examination, breast imaging and a biopsy. Sometimes, women don’t need to have biopsy. All these tests should happen on the same day.
A biopsy is a sample of tissue or cells taken for a specialist doctor (know as a pathologist) to examine in the laboratory to look for cancer cells. The most common method for taking the sample is called ‘core biopsy’ where a small amount of tissue is removed with a needle. This is done under local anaesthetic. Your tests (and any subsequent treatment) will involve a team of healthcare professionals– all specialists in their fields (often called a breast care team or multidisciplinary team). We hope this article has been informative and remember if you have any concerns you may call
Hengrove Pharmacy for free and confidential advice on 0117 300 5446.
Physical examination A hospital doctor or specialist nurse will examine your breast, armpits, the area around your collarbone and neck to look for any abnormalities, including lumps or other changes.
Breast imaging Breast imaging will involve either a mammogram or ultrasound. The best of imaging will depend on your age and physical characteristics. You may even have both.
Mammogram This is an x-ray of your breast tissue using very low doses of radiation. You’ll have two images taken of each breast in the same way that women attending routine NHS breast screening will have experienced. Sometimes extra images may be needed.

Windows 10 Will Be Free - Should I
Upgrade?
You may have heard that a new version of Microsoft Windows is soon to hit the shelves. It’s the follow-up to Windows 8.1, but Microsoft have, rather oddly, decided to call it Windows 10. Windows 8 was widely hated, with many customers sticking with tried and trusted earlier versions like Windows 7 and Windows XP. Can Microsoft finally convince these users to upgrade? And will it be worth updating from Windows 8? If you’ve got Windows 7 or 8 you’ll have seen a little pop-up message in the taskbar asking if you want to register to download the update when it’s released on the 29th July. Should you take the plunge?
What’ new in Windows 10? Windows 10 needs to make up for all the mistakes Windows 8 made. Here are the new features Microsoft are offering to get you to upgrade: 1. The start menu returns: controversially, the Start Menu was removed from Windows 8, and replaced with the Start Screen, covered in ‘live tiles’ which showed you everything from breaking news to weather reports and social media updates. It was no longer easy to browse through all your installed programs, and your Pc started to pretend it was a touch-screen phone. After much outcry, Windows 10 brings back the Start Menu, though it gives you the option to include Live Tiles in there. The menu will also adapt to your screen size, and let you make it full-screen again if you were keen on the Windows 8 way of doing things. This is a great improvement, and almost a reason in itself to upgrade to 10 if you’re using Windows 8.
2. Windows 8’s ‘Modern’ apps should be in a window: The full screen ‘Modern’ apps of Windows 8 which jumped out at you when you tap a Live Tile were another example Microsoft trying to catch up with Apple and other companies. They’re nearly useless on a proper computer, and look ridiculous on a 20” inch monitor. Windows 10 sensibly puts these apps in a window on larger screens, so that they stay a usable size. They make much better use of the space compared to the Windows 8 predecessors. 3. The notification Centre: This is another feature that began life on phones, but this one is a good thing. It shows messages about social media updates, information about your computer, and info from different apps that you’ve got installed. It’s a great way to keep on top of what’s going on, and you’ll be able to control which apps can use this tool - just in case you’re worried that it’ll be just another inbox to get snowed under. It’ll make Windows 10 easier to stay in control of. 4. Continuum: If you thought Windows 8 made a total hash of pretending it was on a trendy tablet, then Continuum will be there to ease your woes. Continuum will help Windows 10 adapt to different screen sizes, so you’ll get your Live Tiles if you’ve got a small screen, but a larger screen will see the interface look more like the desktop you know and love. If you remove the keyboard from a 2-in-1 device, the full Start Screen will appear. And best of all, Windows 10 will automatically detect which kind of screen is present . No more mis-placed touch-screen interfaces on your widescreen monitor. 5. Cortana: Microsoft’s voice activated assistant is its answer to Apple’s Siri. But as well as being your personal assistant, Cortana will sit in the taskbar next to the Start button and allow you to quickly search through your computer and the internet, and ask questions like “What’s 45 times 12?” or “what’s the capital of Peru?” - so called ‘natural language ‘ questions. You’ll also be able to search your OneDrive files if you keep some of them on Microsoft’s cloud storage. Cortana will turn your PC or laptop into a super-useful digital assistant. 6.Spartan Web Browser: Internet Explorer was the web browser that everyone loved to hate. Microsoft managed to make it the most popular browser in the world, and then development on it stagnated for a decade. It’s still trying to catch up with better browsers like Firefox and Chrome. While IE will still be available on Windows 10, a new web browser known as Spartan will be much more
10. Call Direct Local on 07500 017236 * info@DirectLocalOnline.com * www.DirectLocalOnline.com
prominent. Microsoft hopes that, like Windows 10 itself, Spartan can erase the memory of predecessor in consumer’s minds. It should be faster, render websites more accurately , and be less memory intensive. 7. Virtual desktops: This might be a difficult thing to picture until you’ve actually used them, but virtual desktop are like running two more computers side by side. You can have one desktop where all your Office windows are open, another with a music player, and a third dedicated to web stuff and online videos. Instead of having all thirty windows open and cluttering the space, you can sort them out onto different desktops and keep less-used ones out of the way. Macs and Linux computers have had these for some years now, and if you make the most of them you’ll start to wonder how you ever managed without.
Do people like the new software, or is it further frustration from the Seattle company? There’s also common advice to always avoid software when it’s brand new, until the final bugs are ironed out. Windows 10 fixes a lot which is wrong with Windows 8, but Windows 7 was a perfectly good operating system, so if the new features outlined above the don’t catch your attention, I’d wait. Those on Windows 8 machines, however, will probably want to have a serious look at Windows 10. Windows 8 was a mess, and Windows 10 might be the very thing users of that poor operating system have been waiting for. More questions? I’m always here at the end of the phone to answer questions on this and any other computer questions, so pick up the phone or get in touch via Twitter and Facebook. And the ultimate question: will/ be upgrading? Well, I've been on Windows 8 for the last few months, and personally can’t wait to move off it onto something better… Need more advice on whether to upgrade? Want help doing it when it arrives? Ship Shape computers can help with this and all sorts of other computer problems. Just pick up the phone.
8. Settings: Ok, not the most glamorous of topics, but if Windows 8’s main problem way its split personality, the Control panel was the worst example. There were effectively two in Windows 8 (the usual one and another for the Start Screen), with settings randomly spread across the two. Sometimes the same setting was there on both sides. Now, there will just be one Setting screen, with all the control panel elements in one place. Windows 10 should be much easier to manage than 8. So, what do I recommend? If you've seen the message asking about reserving Windows 10, should you accept or not? Well, whatever older version of windows you’re using there are reasons to upgrade. The system should be faster, notifications will tell you what’s going on in the world (and on your PC), and the much loved Start Menu is more flexible than ever. And at the low price of Free, anyone who wants to keep up to date with the latest from Microsoft should certainly consider it. However, if you’re using Windows 7 and your computer is running smoothly, then I’d wait a while. Find out the public reaction to the system from July 29th onward.

Bristol Fashion
Summer Show
Bristol Fashion are gearing up for their Summer Show on 11th July. We are looking forward to sharing the stage with Charlie Green. Charlie's introduction to the world of entertainment began at a very early age when he entertained passengers on board a cruise ship with a rendering of that classic song ‘New York, New York’. On further cruises he also entertained passengers at the grand piano. He came to the world's attention in 2008 when he performed on the popular TV show ‘Britain's Got Talent’. This led him to having over 4 million hits on YouTube. Since this time he has continued to mature as a singer, performing in the USA, Canada and the Philippines. In the UK. he has performed in a number of premier concert venues including the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester, Fairfield Hall, Croydon, and twice at Birmingham’s Symphony Hall. His repertoire is wide ranging including swing, gospel, modern pop music and ‘Rat Pack’ style ballads. We can promise you a great evening. This will be the second time Bristol Fashion have performed in the lovely St Mary Magdalene Church. All the proceeds will go to MacMillan Cancer Support. Tickets cost £10, concessions £8 and can be obtained by calling 01275 835512, emailing pro@bristolfashion.org.uk or you can book online at www.eventbrite.co.uk Bristol and the surrounding area is a hotbed of Barbershop, boasting a men’s chorus, and no less than 4 ladies’ choruses, not to mention a plethora of quartets, male, female and mixed. Our local men’s chorus, the Great Western Chorus recently gained gold for the 9th time in the annual British Association of Barbershop Singers convention competition. The ladies’ Convention is held every year in October, and friendly competition prevails between the local ladies’ choruses and quartets. On Tuesday June 16th seven local quartets took part in a showcase event at St Anne’s Church Siston, organised by the members of High Tea quartet. This was in preparation for the preliminary quartet competition, to decide who will go forward to compete in October. The event gave quartets the opportunity to perform their competition sets before an audience, resulting in a very enjoyable evening, enhanced with tea, coffee and delicious cakes. In addition, almost £200 was raised for Survive, a South Gloucestershire women’s refuge and support charity. If you would like to know more about barbershop singing, or check out local choruses go to www.labbs.org.uk (women) or www.singbarbershop.com (men)

Question I’m looking at getting a new vehicle for my business and I know there are some tax advantages of having vans. But what is the definition of a van, so that I know what to buy? Answer Vans have a number of benefits for tax purposes; in comparison to cars: 1. VAT – if your business is VAT registered, you may be able to recover the VAT on a van 2. Capital Allowances – if you buy the van outright or under a finance lease such as a Hire Purchase agreement, you should be able to offset the cost of the van against your profits. 3. Benefits in Kind – Company cars can trigger taxable benefits in kind, which are based on the List Price and the car’s CO2 emissions whereas benefits in kind for vans are a fixed amount Defining a van can be tricky, as there are different criteria for different areas of tax, but try to stick to the following conditions: A vehicle that is not commonly used as a private vehicle and is unsuitable for such use A vehicle primarily suited for the transportation of goods- no rear seats/ windows, Has a maximum legal laden weight of 3,500kg Discussing this with an accountant before you make any purchases, could prevent you from losing tax relief and being unable to reclaim VAT. Question I’ve just gone self employed. How do I go about paying my stamp? Answer The self employed pay 2 types of National Insurance: 1. Class 4 which is dependent upon the level of profits and is collected via the tax return 2. Class 2 which is a fixed amount In the past, Class 2 National Insurance has typically been collected from taxpayers via Direct Debit. But from April 2015, Class 2 National Insurance became an annual charge and will now be collected via the tax return and the Self Assessment regime. As your business is just starting out, I would recommend that you seek advice on your affairs. This can make sure you’re claiming everything you’re entitled to and making the most of all the tax planning opportunities you have available. And crucially this year, if your profits fall below the small earnings level, Class 2 will not fall due. This could lead to gaps in National Insurance records which will have an impact when claiming some state benefits such as the state pension. Fire Walk for
Guide Dogs
Are you Up For The Challenge? Guide Dogs Charity are on the Lookout for Thrill Seekers This September, Guide Dogs are holding their first Fire Walk in Bristol, to raise money and awareness of this amazing charity. The event is set to take place on 3rd September at Millennium Square and they hope to raise £5,000 for the charity. This is enough to breed and train a new puppy, that will one day go on to support someone who is blind or partially sighted. Guide Dogs are currently on the lookout for any thrill seekers who would like to take on the challenge of a fire walk. Sarah Knox from Guide Dogs says ‘This event is a great way to ‘Stand Out’ for Guide Dogs and we are excited to be able to hold this event in Bristol for the first time. Many people have fire walking on their bucket list, and now is the chance to tick off that challenge and show your friends and family that you can be fearless for charity. Guide Dogs are so reliant on the generosity of the public, as the charity receives no government support for our Guide Dog service. So events like this one, are a great way for us to continue to support blind and partially sighted people Already signed up is a gentleman who is awaiting training with his first guide dog, and a lady whose working guide dog will be watching from the sidelines as she braves the challenge. This is the shortest sponsored walk anyone will ever take part in, so please show your support and sign up today.’ Signing up is easy, just contact Sarah on 07785 433266 or email sarah.knox@guidedogs.org.uk. There is a £40 registration fee, and we hope you will be able to raise £150 in sponsorship. Once you have registered, you will be sent a fundraising pack to help you reach your target. The event will start with a workshop at 7pm for all participants and then the walk itself will take place at 8pm. The fire walk is being run by professional fire walking company Survivability. If this event is not for you, then why not show your support to our brave fire walkers and sponsor them online now at www.justgiving.com/ GuideDogsFireWalkBristol For more information about Guide Dogs or this event, please check out the website www.guidedogs.org.uk or contact Sarah. Thursday 3rd September Millennium square, Bristol Cost: £40 registration plus £150 sponsorship to take part.

BBQ Season Is Here Why Not Treat
BBQs On The Menu This Summer Thanks To Slimming World And Iceland Bristol's slimmers are looking forward to celebrating their slimmest summer ever thanks to the launch of a new barbecue range created by Slimming World in association with Iceland. The three products – Beef Quarter Pounders, Thaistyle Chicken Quarter Pounders and Mediterraneanstyle Chicken Sausages – are perfect for the barbecue and join Slimming World’s food range, which was Iceland’s most successful ever frozen food range launch when it hit stores in February. Based on Slimming World’s famous Food Optimising* eating plan, the collection of ready meals and other products has been developed in response to demand from the club’s 800,000 members. And the new additions, which are in stores now, will ensure slimmers can enjoy barbecues with family and friends with ease and stay on track with their weight loss campaign. Sarah Bryant, a Slimming World Consultant who runs Slimming World groups in Hengrove and Whitchurch, says her members are loving the new burgers and sausages: “The Slimming World meals have been a big hit with my members and they’ve really helped them to stay on track with their weight losses by enabling them to enjoy healthy, filling meals even when they’re short of time or working shifts and unable to prepare a healthy home-cooked meal, which is exactly why Slimming World developed the range in the first place. “Summer can be a challenging time as normal routines are disrupted with school holidays and special events like barbecues and summer parties. These three new products, all ‘Free Foods’ on Slimming World’s Food Optimising plan, will help slimmers to enjoy these occasions without compromising their weight losses, so I’m confident my members will be able to have their healthiest, tastiest summer yet.” Slimming World members follow the club’s Food Optimising healthy eating plan and learn to satisfy their appetite on those foods that are the lowest in energy density (calories per gram). Slimming World calls these foods ‘Free Foods’ and they include foods like poultry, fish, lean meat, eggs, pulses, pasta, rice, potatoes, fruit, vegetables and fat-free dairy products.
Yourself! While cooking from scratch is and always will be at the heart of Food Optimising, these new products are made with lean, protein-packed meat and lend themselves brilliantly to recipes with lots of fresh salad and veg. The new products are: 4 Syn-free Thai-style Chicken Quarter Pounders: Juicy and zingy chicken burgers, high in protein and made with chicken breast, red and jalapeno peppers and Thai-style seasoning. 454g pack. 4 Syn-free Beef Quarter Pounders: Mouthwatering beef burgers, packed with protein and the delicious flavours of onion and spices. 454g pack 6 Syn-free Mediterranean -style Chicken Sausages: Sublime, protein-rich chicken sausages bursting with the flavours of the Mediterranean and made with chicken breast, red peppers, garlic and herbs. 360g pack. The range of Slimming World meals and products is available exclusively in Iceland’s 850 stores including and are all priced at £3 each. The three new additions, which can all be grilled, cooked in a pan sprayed with low calorie cooking spray or cooked on the barbecue from frozen, are available now. More products, including vegetarian options, are in development and will be in stores later this year. Anyone interested in finding out more about losing weight through healthy eating or joining a local Slimming World group is welcome to pop along or for more information they can call Sarah on 07879 443888

There is not long to go until the ‘Shaun in the City’ flock arrives in Bristol – and to kick off the countdown, two of the trail’s celebrity designs have been revealed! The eagerly-anticipated charity sculpture trail will feature 70 individually-designed sculptures of Aardman’s Shaun the Sheep. The sculptures will be installed in iconic locations and green spaces all across Bristol from 6 July until 31 August, including Clifton Suspension Bridge, Bristol Temple Meads Station, Ashton Gate Stadium, Snuff Mills and Horfield Common, before being auctioned to raise funds for Wallace & Gromit’s Grand Appeal, the Bristol Children’s Hospital Charity. The Bristol trail follows the hugely popular ‘Shaun in the City’ trail in London earlier this year, which was visited by hundreds of thousands of people, and was extended for an extra week due to overwhelming public demand. The Bristol trail features 70 brand new sculpture designs, each created by a different artist, designer or celebrity – including Peter Firmin, the creator of another much-loved British animated character, Bagpuss. Peter painted the sculpture with his daughter Emily, an artist and sculptor. Emily also played Bagpuss’ owner in the television series when she was eight years old. Peter said, “Emily and I have never worked together before as our work is normally on a totally different scale. She makes large papier mache sculptures, and knows about painting sculptures of this scale and size, so I asked her to help me with ‘Bagpuss Shaun’. “She helped me work out how to paint such a large sculpture, and helped painting the legs, as I found it difficult at my age to bend down to reach them. She also helped me with the ragging technique used to create the furry texture on Shaun’s body. “We painted ‘Bagpuss Shaun’ in my barn, where I built Bagpuss’ Shop and the Clangers’ planet. ‘Bagpuss Shaun’ is six feet tall with Gabriel the Toad on his head, so it was the only place big enough! Bagpuss has never been forgotten and I hope that ‘Bagpuss Shaun’ is a popular part of the ‘Shaun in the City’ trail. It was great fun to create him and good to know it is in aid of such a good cause.” ‘ Bagpuss Shaun’ will be on display at Cabot Circus during the trail, and is also sponsored by Cabot Circus. Peter is joined by Wayne Hemingway, the acclaimed British designer behind fashion label Red or Dead.

Let the Hunt
Begin!
Wayne is well-known for his playful and colourful creations. True to this signature style his sculpture, ‘Sheepish’, sees Shaun disguised as a bright pink poodle. Wayne said, “It was a no-brainer to get involved in such a fun project, which gives so much pleasure to people and benefits such a wonderful cause. “Creating this sculpture for ‘Shaun in the City’ has been a blast. I love it when on those rare occasions you see a poodle with a pink “do” being walked in the park, and thought that Shaun may want to disguise himself “sheepishly” as a giant pink poodle with a “do”.The sculpture proves that he would. We love coming to Bristol and working with Unite Students, one of our favourite clients, and am looking forward to visiting ‘Sheepish’ during the trail.” ‘Sheepish’ will be located at Temple Church Gardens and is sponsored by Unite Students. Nicola Masters, director of The Grand Appeal, said, “We are all so excited to unveil Peter Firmin and Wayne Hemingway as the first celebrity designers on our Bristol trail. “Bagpuss is a truly timeless character loved by generations of all ages, and we loved the idea of a sculpture that combined his familiar pink stripes with a modern-day classic character, Shaun the Sheep! “Wayne is one of Britain’s brightest design talents, and we just knew he would use Shaun as a canvas for something really creative. His bright pink poodle, ‘Sheepish’, will certainly be very hard to miss on the streets of Bristol!” The Grand Appeal previously organised the phenomenally successful ‘Gromit Unleashed’ trail in Bristol in 2013. The 80 sculptures of Wallace’s canine sidekick were visited by more than 1.2million people, and raised over £2.3 million for the charity at auction. Nicola Masters continued, “Our London trail was so popular that we extended it for a further week, now there’s just a month to go until the new flock arrives in Bristol. After the fantastic success of ‘Gromit Unleashed’ two summers ago, we know how much excitement there is in Bristol for Shaun to arrive. “We are very grateful for the support Bristol showed for Gromit, and for the Grand Appeal. We hope people take our Shaun sculptures to heart in just the same way, helping us to continue to raise vital funds for Bristol Children’s Hospital.” Visitors will be able to track down all 70 ‘Shaun in the City’ sculptures by picking up a free trail map from points all over the city, available once the trail starts. You can also download the official ‘Shaun in the City: Sheep Spotter’ app, available now for £1.49 on iOS and Android, with all proceeds to the charity. The 120 sculptures from the Bristol and London ‘Shaun in the City’ trails will go on display in the Great Sheep Round Up Exhibition in Bristol this autumn, before the whole flock goes to auction. Proceeds from the sale of the 70 Bristol sculptures will support The Grand Appeal, the Bristol Children’s Hospital Charity.
