Men's Health Week

2015 Men’s Health Week 2015 focuses on men’s health and challenges them to be more healthy and to raise awareness of health issues and men’s inbuilt resistance to seeking help or talking openly about their problems. The male of the species are renowned for engaging in far fewer health-promoting behaviours than women and many more risky behaviours. Research reviewing hundreds of large studies has revealed that men of all ages are more likely than women to engage in over 30 controllable behaviours linked with a greater risk of disease, injury, and death. Men don’t take advantage of healthcare resources- don’t go to the doctor, don’t utilize mental health services and the list goes on and on. So men don’t take care of themselves, right? Awareness of this phenomenon is a starting point and there are of course reasons for this. Dr. William Pollack’s work with boys back in the 90’s (Real Boys) showed that boys learn from an early age not to reveal themselves. They are encouraged to control their emotions, to not ask for help and they are marginalized, even punished when they do. The result is what Pollack termed, The Boy Code, which is a cover for real feelings, instead expressing that “everything is fine”. Year after year, boys and young men get reinforced for “sucking it up” and “taking it like a man”, rarely allowing themselves to be vulnerable, and certainly not to express it. So why might we expect that in adulthood, men would suddenly be comfortable with a physical examination, especially one in which a doctor touches a guy in his “nether regions”? Or suddenly be willing to talk openly about his bowel habits?

The sad and often harsh reality is that “male pride” prevents men from seeking medical attention at an early stage when often something could be done about their problem before it is too late. Take bowel cancer for instance, Every half an hour a man will be diagnosed with bowel cancer. Despite this Bowel Cancer UK has found that 44% of men in the UK would be deterred from visiting their doctor if they suspected a bowel related illness. This reluctance to consult a professional about worrying symptoms and to simply ignore them mean men often present at late stages when their condition is quite advanced preferring to bottle up their feelings and conceal their concerns. It’s probably nothing, it’ll go away, I’ll tough it out and I don’t have time are common excuses that men use as well as probe-aphobia, fear of embarrassment and even feelings of shame or guilt. These constitute a barrier to treatment and potent form of DENIAL (don’t even know I am lying)! Remember: Courage is when one acknowledges vulnerability, be it fear, anxiety, etc and then being willing to be with that feeling and continuing onward. In the UK, one man in five dies before he reaches 65. We can change that!

Hengrove Pharmacy Hengrove Lane Bristol BS14 9DB Hengrove 0117 300 5446

When young men make decisions that negatively impact their health, we assume they aren’t taking care of themselves. But the real truth is that they may be protecting their mental/emotional self by preventing being ostracized for showing a level of vulnerability. From the outside, it looks like choosing to engage in risky behaviour such as drinking and driving, recreational drug use, not wearing a seatbelt, having unprotected sex and eating a diet of junk food may be damaging to physical health, but a closer look reveals that boy and men may be protecting from emotional and social ridicule, which is often worth the risk of developing some health concern later in life.

Make The Change

NOW!

Get Good Sleep Insufficient sleep is associated with a number of chronic diseases and conditions, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and depression. Also, insufficient sleep is responsible for motor vehicle and machinery-related accidents, causing substantial injury and disability each year. Sleep guidelines from the National Sleep Foundation have noted that sleep needs change as we age. In general, adults need between 7-9 hours of sleep.

Tame stress Sometimes stress can be good, however, it can be harmful when it is severe enough to make you feel overwhelmed and out of control. Take care of yourself. Avoid drugs and alcohol. Find support. Connect socially. Stay active.

Avoid Excessive Drinking This is a big one and denial can be very strong once you become entrenched in a pattern of drinking. Current guideline state that men should not drink more than 3-4units per day that’s one pint of 5% lager or its equivalent. Remember if you are preoccupied with drinking, can’t honestly take it or leave it or if alcohol is costing you more than the price then you may have alcohol dependence. Contact drinkaware or alcoholics anonymous. Toss out the Tobacco It’s never too late to quit. Quitting smoking has immediate and long-term benefits. It improves your health and lowers your risk of heart disease, cancer, lung disease, and other smoking-related illnesses. Also avoid being around secondhand smoke. Inhaling other people's smoke causes health problems similar to those that smokers have. Babies and kids are still growing, so the poisons in secondhand smoke hurt them more than adults. Exercise Adults need at least 2½ hours of moderate-intensity aerobic activity (such as brisk walking) every week, and muscle strengthening activities that work all major muscle groups (legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders, and arms) on two or more days a week. You don't have to do it all at once. Spread your activity out during the week, and break it into smaller chunks of time during the day. Eat Healthy Eat a variety of fruits and vegetables every day. They are sources of many vitamins, minerals, and other natural substances that may help protect you from chronic diseases. Limit foods and drinks high in calories, sugar, salt, fat, and alcohol. Choose healthy snacks

Stay on top of your

game

See your doctor or nurse for regular checkups. Certain diseases may not have symptoms, so checkups help diagnose issues early or before they can become a problem  Get the preventive medical test you need  Men: stay healthy at any age (AHRQ) Pay attention to signs and symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, excessive thirst, and problems with urination. If you have these or symptoms of any kind, be sure to see your doctor right away. Don’t wait!   

Cancer and men HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases Heart disease signs and symptoms

Keep track of your numbers for blood pressure, blood glucose, cholesterol, body mass index (BMI), or any others you may have. If your numbers are high or low, your doctor or nurse can explain what they mean and suggest how you can get them to a healthier range. Be sure to ask him or her what tests you need and how often you need them.  High blood pressure  Checking your blood glucose  Cholesterol  BMI If you have any questions about your health or concerns please contact HENGROVE PHARMACY ON 0117 300 5446 or your GP practice. Remember you can attend a well-man clinic at your surgery for an MOT. Please do this once in a while even if you think you are well. Remember male pride can be a powerful barrier against the truth so be honest and really Man Up!

Question I have had a lot going on and I still haven’t got round to submitting my 2013/14 tax return. What consequences should I be bracing myself for?

Answer Late Filing Penalties You should already have received an automatic filing penalty of £100. But from 1st May, daily penalties of £10 will start to apply in addition to the initial £100 penalty. They will be capped at £900 but further penalties will start to apply if the delay reaches 6 months. Interest Interest on the late payment of any tax liability will also be accruing. The current rate of interest charged by HMRC can be found on their website. Late payment penalties Late payment penalties are raised where the tax is unpaid for 30 days after the due date. A second penalty is created where the tax is unpaid 30 days and 5 months after the due date. Further penalties arise for persistent delays. The penalties are charged at 5% of the amount of tax unpaid.

Question I would like to encourage my customers with a discount. But which value do I calculate the VAT on - the amount before or after the discount?

Answer Unfortunately, the UK VAT legislation is misaligned with EU VAT legislation in respect of prompt payment discounts. Therefore, with effect from April 2015 VAT will need to be accounted for on the full invoice amount. If the client does subsequently take up the discount, a credit note carrying VAT should be issued or you should display on the original invoice what entries the client should make to their records for the discount. Please note, it will apply from the earlier date of 1st May 2014 for supplies of telecommunications and broadcasting services where there is no obligation to provide a tax invoice. Harmonies On The

Hill

Race For

There’s something very exhilarating about singing outdoors. A group of about 20 people of all ages met in Victoria Park on Sunday May 17th to celebrate Spring in song. As part of the Bristol Walking Festival, which took place all over Bristol during May, Helen Adshead and Nicola Ramsden led us around the park singing simple songs and harmonies relating to the different trees, blossoms and wildlife and the traditions surrounding them. The sun shone on a rather breezy afternoon, which was well rounded off with tea and cake at Mrs Brown’s Café.

Local People Supporting Local

Children!

Fantastic, free children’s club: Operation ‘Make a Difference’ has a mission to improve self-esteem & encourage self-belief in Bristol’s young people – and they need your help! Operation ‘MAD’ has a mission ‘Make a Difference’ to the local community, whilst boosting confidence in South Bristol’s children! The new club launched at the end of April and is open to children between ages 8 and 12. The inspiring programme runs between 4:30-6pm every week, and is based around promoting positivity and an honest “can-do” attitude in kids all around Bristol. Whilst setting-up the new children’s club, founders, Abby and Jo ran into a potential problem – the children that would benefit the most, were not able to join us due to financial setbacks. The team decided to launch the pilot programme as FREE to ensure equal opportunities we’re offered to all local children! This enabled them to really ‘make a difference’ where it was needed most. To continue doing the great work that they’re doing, Operation ‘MAD’ are in need of some sponsorship (starting from as little as £60!). This will cover a child for the full programme (3 months!), allowing them to be a part of a really lovely group of young people. So many children have benefited already, and Abby and Jo (along with their brilliant volunteers) would love to help more. If you’re a business or individual interested in helping the ‘MAD’ team to ‘Make a Difference’, please go to www.operation-mad.com and click ‘Sponsor a Child’. You could be helping a child immensely, with both their self-esteem and self-belief! In return, Operation ‘MAD’ will promote yourself or your business for FREE. This marketing includes: advertising in all letters we send out to local families (weekly), on our social media (followed by over 500 Bristol people), in magazines such as Direct Local and The Pigeon, along with support from Bristol City Football Club & Heart FM shoutouts.

These great organisations have helped us, and we’d love to help you! Want your child to be a part of it? Sign up now: www.operation-mad.com/get-involved

Volunteering opportunities are available too. Just head online and use the contact form to find out more! Want to sponsor a child with us? Thank you!

Check Your

Tyres There are a lot of things on your car that need to be regularly checked and replaced, but none may be more important than your tires. As your anchor to the road, your tyres need to be in top condition for what ever driving situation you find yourself in. Before you walk into a tyre store, here are a few things you need to keep in mind. When purchasing tyres, it is important to make sure that all the tyres on your car are the same or at least very close to the same. This is most easily done when buying all four tyres at once. But lets say you need to change just one or two tyres because they were damaged. You just have to makes sure that you try and buy the same brand, size, type, and speed rating. Even if this tire is a little more expensive than others, your safety is worth it. The next thing you need to know when buying tyres is what kind of conditions you will be driving your car in. Bridgestone tyres are going to be different than Michelin, tyres. There is a lot of snow in the winter and lots of rain throughout the spring and summer. Because of this, someone's Michelin tyres are going to need to be the best tire for the worst driving conditions you will face. This might mean buying two sets of tyres, one for the summer and one for the winter. This way, you will always have the right tyre for your situation. For places with milder climates, you may be able to get away with just one, all-season tire. But you have to consider your normal driving habits as well. If your furthest driving distance is to the local shopping center, you can choose just about any tyre. If you spend a lot of time in rush hour traffic, you'll be better off getting more responsive tires. For regular long highway trips, you'll need some smooth, quiet, long lasting tyres. And it comes to no surprise that you'll want tires with great handling if you frequently find yourself on a winding road. One of the last things you need to think about is your tyres speed rating. This is an important number to pay attention to because it can save you money if you know what to look for. Lets say you're at your local store and you think you've picked out the prefect tyre. What's the speed rating on that tyre? If it is any higher than 150MPH then you're paying too much for a tyre that you'll never fully use. When are you ever going to be driving faster than 150MPH? If you knock down your tire's speed rating to 130MPH, you'll also knock down it's price. Most high performance tyres come with a higher speed rating, even though you'll never use it, so just know what you're actually paying for. And be cautious. Most tires with a high speed rating have softer rubber and don't last as long.

Puppy

Power!

Stressed– out students in Bristol University have signed up in their hundreds to cuddle a puppy as they try to deal with the toil of exam pressure. Gordon Trevett, of the university of Bristol found out about this concept of students being around puppies which relaxes and calms the student before the exam. With that in mind he contacted the charity Guide Dogs who were more than happy to accommodate 21 Labradors from the charity attended and acted to fulfil their duty on a rota basis with four or five at a time entertaining 25 students at a time in 15 minute stints.

Did You

Know?

People with dogs have a lower blood pressure in stressful situations than those who do not have a dog. We know that playing with a dog can alleviate levels of serotonin and dopamine, which calms and relaxes people who are stressed . It’s been to proven that is a very good way to deal with stress as 600 students signed up to take part. In the university the sport centre became a big puppy play centre and excited students –a huge minority of whom were female students - filled eager to spend some time petting and cuddling the dogs. The dogs were aged between 5 and 12 months - although there were some older dogs doing their job as well.
