Take A Tour Of The Mediterranean Without Leaving Bristol The Mediterranean diet has long been associated with good health. Now a local weight-loss expert says a new cook book inspired by the Med will set you on the road to fabulous slimming. Slimming World has published Mediterranean Magic, which is full of Mediterranean-style dishes that have been created in line with the organisation’s famous Food Optimising healthy eating plan. Sarah Bryant, who runs local Slimming World groups, says it will show people that it’s possible to fill your plate with bold sunshine flavours and exciting colourful food while losing weight. She says: “Mealtimes in the Med are special times. They’re about sitting down with the ones you love and enjoying the foods and flavours you love. For me, one of the best things about the warmer months is enjoying mouth-watering meals with family and friends, whether that’s packing a picnic or coming together for a big barbecue feast. People might think that if they’re losing weight those events have to be off the menu for them, yet that’s absolutely not the case at Slimming World. “Slimming World’s plan isn’t about going ‘on a diet’, it’s about discovering a new way of eating that means you can still enjoy food and live your life. In fact, by making small changes to the way they prepare and cook meals, slimmer's find there’s very little they can’t have while losing weight. The healthy versions of delicious dishes from holiday hotspots in this book show that perfectly and they’re ideal for the upcoming summer months. Even if people aren’t going away this summer, Mediterranean Magic will take them, and their taste buds, on a tour of the Med and ensure that their weight-loss journey is a very tasty one.”

Mediterranean Magic features more than 100 recipes – including mains, starters and desserts – from countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea like France, Spain, Italy and North Africa. Readers will find healthy versions of classics from their favourite destinations, such as lasagne and paella, as well as discovering new dishes, including Spanakopita (a spinach and feta pie from Greece) and Harira (a fragrant Moroccan soup). Every recipe in Mediterranean Magic is based on Slimming World’s Food Optimising plan, which allows slimmer's to satisfy their appetite on every day foods like fruit and veg, meat, chicken, fish, pasta, rice and potatoes so there’s no need to go hungry while losing weight. Herbs and spices can also be used freely on the plan, meaning it’s easy for anyone who’s losing weight to bring the big flavours of the Med into their kitchen without compromising their slimming campaign. The collection suits all cooking abilities and each recipe is accompanied by a photo of the finished article to tempt the taste buds and help inspire novice cooks. Mediterranean Magic as well as a range of other cookery books are available in all Slimming World groups exclusively for members. For more delicious recipes and to find out more about how you can lose weight and eat delicious food with Slimming World, visit www.slimmingworld.com or join a local group.for more information you can also contact Sarah on 07879 443888.

Did you know that a 100 tons of unwanted clothing are exported for re-use each week in Bristol? Founded in 1972 by the late, Fernley Piper, Bristol Textile Recyclers is a family run, local employer. Now run by Fernley's son, Haydn, BTR was formally known as Avon Rag until 1997, when the company rebranded. BTR’s current premises, on Victoria Terrace, St Phillip’s Marsh and only a ten minute walk form Temple meads, used to be a row of houses until it was bombed during the 2nd World War and then rebuilt in the 1950’s as the factory stands today. BTR moved during the early 2000’s having previously resided on Midland Road and then Avon Street in Bristol.

BTR also works with schools, PTA’s, community groups and other third-sector, non-profit organisations helping them to fundraise through recycling by organising clothes drives and placing recycling banks throughout their catchment area. BTR has great plans for the future including aspirations for new environmentally friendly, sustainable premises and assisting in the future development of Bristol Textile Quarter. If you would like to learn more about BTR Ltd, please visit their website, www.btr-ltd.co.uk, or contact the team to arrange a factory tour.

BTR Ltd is currently the only Textile Recycler in the West of England, working predominately with charity shops throughout the West of England, Gloucestershire, Midlands, M4 Corridor and Hertfordshire. BTR helps charity shops with the recycling of their unsellable goods, helping the charities to further fundraise for their core cause as well as we keep their stock room clear for new donations.

Hengrove Pharmacy Hengrove Lane Bristol BS14 9DB 0117 300 5446 Sun & skin Awareness Its that time of year again and for most of us the bright sunny weather is a welcome relief . It does come with its risks though and this month’s article seeks to inform you of the biggest concern: Skin Cancer. This is the most common form of cancer in the UK, and rates continue to rise each year. The good news is detection rates and treatments have never been better so its important to seek medical attention early for treatment to be successful. At least 1000,000 new cases of Skin Cancer are now diagnosed each year, and the disease kills over 2,500 people each year in the UK—that’s seven people every day. Remember pharmacist and GPs are happy to advise in case of query as we are trained to recognize the signs and symptoms of Skin Cancer. Phone us at Hengrove Pharmacy on 0117 300 5446 if you need any help or advice on this or any other health related topic. Whilst we are getting better at understanding how skin cancer works, we still have a long way to go. On average, someone who dies from skin cancer typically loses 20 years of their life, and rates of malignant melanoma are rising faster than any other type of common cancer. What is melanoma? Cutaneous malignant melanoma is a cancer of the pigment cells of the skin. If it is treated early, the outlook is usually good. It is not contagious. The word ‘melanoma’ comes from the Greek word ‘melas’, meaning black. Melanin is the dark pigment that gives the skin its natural colour. Melanin is made in the skin by pigment cells called melanocytes. After our skin is exposed to sunlight, the melanocytes make more melanin, and so the skin becomes darker. Melanocytes sometimes grow together in harmless groups or clusters, which are know as moles. Most people have between 10 and 50 moles and often they are darker than the surrounding skin. Melanomas can come up in or near to a mole, but can also appear on skin that looks quite normal. They develop when the skin pigment cells (melanocytes) become cancerous and multiply in an uncontrolled way. They can invade the skin around them and may also spread to other areas such as the lymph nodes, liver and lungs.

The most important preventable cause is exposure to too much ultraviolet light in sunlight, especially during the first 20 years of life. There is lots of evidence linking melanoma to this, and melanomas are especially common in white-skinned people who live in sunny countries. The us of artificial sources of ultraviolet light, such as sun beds, also raises the risk of getting a melanoma. If you are worried at all about a mole or skin lesion that is changing colour, shape and /or is bleeding and refuses to heal, get advice from your pharmacist or GP urgently. Remember: three quarters of patients who have a melanoma removed early suffer no further problems. They need to be removed quickly before they spread deep into the skin or to other parts of the body. Other risk factors include: People who burn easily in the sun are particularly at risk. Melanoma occurs most often in fair-skinned people who tan poorly. Often they have blond or red hair, blue or green eyes, and freckles easily. Melanomas are less common in dark-skinned people. Past episodes of severe sunburn, often with blisters, and particularly in childhood, increase the risk of developing a melanoma. However, not all melanomas are due to sun exposure , and some appear in areas that are normally kept covered. People with many (more than 50) ordinary moles, or with a very large dark hairy birthmark, have a higher than average chance of getting a melanoma. Some people have many unusual moles.

8. Call Direct Local on 07500 017236 * info@DirectLocalOnline.com * www.DirectLocalOnline.com

Sun And Skin Cancer Awareness They tend to be larger than ordinary moles, to be presented in large numbers, and to have irregular edges or colour patterns. The tendency to have these ’dysplastic naevi’ can run in families and carries an increased risk of getting melanoma . The risk is raised if another family member has had a melanoma are at an increased risk of getting another one. Finally people with a damaged immune system (e.g. as a result of an HIV infection or taking immunosuppressive drug, perhaps after an organ transplant) have an increased chance of getting a melanoma. What are the symptoms of melanoma? Melanomas may not cause any symptoms at all, but tinging or itching may occur at an early stage. Some melanomas starts as minor changes in the size, or colour of an existing mole (see below): others begin as a dark area that can look like a new mole. Later on a melanoma may feel hard and lumpy, and bleed, ooze or crust up. All melanomas do not look the same, and there are several different types. The ABCD system (below) tells you some of the things to look out for. Melanomas can appear on any part of the skin but they are most common in men on the body, and in women on the legs. A melanoma may show one or more of the following features: Asymmetry—the two halves of the area differ in their shape. Border—the edges of the area may be irregular or blurred, and sometimes show notches. Colour– this may be uneven. Different shades of black, brown and pink may be seen. Diameter– most melanomas are at least 6mm in diameter. Prevention UV exposure is the main preventable cause of skin cancer, so here are a few tips on how to stay safe in the sun: Clothing Clothing should always be your first line of defence against damage from the sun, with sunscreen being used in addition to clothes, including a hat, tshirt and UV protective sunglasses. Materials with a close weave tend to be better at blocking harmful rays and you can check this by holding the fabric up to the light.

Remember when clothes are wet this will stretch the fabric and reduce its UV blocking ability so a wet t-shirt may offer only half the protection of a dry one. Find the right sunscreen Use a sunscreen of SPF30 (SPF stands for ‘Sun Protection Factor’) and refers to the level of protection against UVB radiation, linked to skin cancer. Look for a four or five star UVA rating on the bottles which will helps protect from UVA radiation, associated with skin aging. You may also find that the UVA rating is representing by the letters ‘UVA’ inside a circle. Babies and toddlers should be kept out of direct sunlight. SPF 50 or total block is advised for babies and toddlers and for sensitive areas such as the top of the head, nose, lips and face. Waterproof varieties ‘stick’ to the skin better and are not washed away by water or sweat. Certain medications may require you to use a sunblock or else they wont work properly. Read through the PIL (patient information leaflet) that comes with your medication and read the small print on the label. Ask your pharmacist if you are unsure. Get your timing right Skin needs time to absorb sunscreen, so apply generously about 20 to 30 minutes before going out. Reapply frequently at least every two hours, as it can come off when sweating or through rubbing. When swimming make sure you regular apply a waterproof version of sunscreen as this will be specially formulated to offer enhanced protection and will not simply be washed off. Seek shelter The sun tends to be strongest in the middle of the day, so find some shade typically between 11am and 3pm, especially if you are very fair skinned. Just 10 minutes of strong sunshine is all it takes to burn pale skin. Remember also that the sun’s rays get stronger with altitude. The higher you are the more protection you will need so skiers, walkers and mountaineers need to take extra care. Thank you for taking the time to read our article and we hope you found it informative. Here at Hengrove Pharmacy we have many leaflets available on this topic and many more. Please feel free to pop in at any time for a friendly and confidential chat about any of your concerns. We are always happy to help.

Question Please could you tell me what the personal allowance and basic rate band will be in 2015/16? Answer The personal allowance is the amount of tax-free income that an individual is entitled to. It can vary according to your age, gender and your circumstances. As already announced the basic personal allowance for 2015/16 will be £10,600. The Budget on 18th March announced that there will be a further above inflation increase to £10,800 for 2016/17 and £11,000 in 2017/18. Those aged 75 and over will continue to receive a personal allowance of £10,660 for 2015/16 but by 2016/17 they will receive the basic personal allowance. The 20% basic rate band is £31,785 for 2015/16 and will be £31,900 for 2016/17. This means that you pay 40% tax if your taxable income exceeds £42,385 for 2015/16 and £42,700 for 2016/17. It is proposed that the higher rate tax threshold will increase to £43,300 for 2017/18. The 45% top rate continues to apply to taxable income over £150,000 for 2015/16. Question Q: I have been renting out a house for a number of years but have never told HMRC. What are my obligations? Answer A: If you are receiving income from renting out a residential property then you should have told HMRC and you may have Income Tax to pay. In fact you are obliged to submit a tax return if your gross rents (i.e. the income from the property before deducting any expenses) are over £10,000 per annum, or the profit (income after deducting expenses) is more than £2,500. Even if your circumstances are under these thresholds, you should always contact HMRC to confirm whether they wish you to complete a return- for example in some instances, they may agree to collect any tax at source via your tax code and remove the need for a tax return. If you should have paid tax on the rental income then you may now have penalties and interest to pay, as well as the unpaid tax!. As you have been renting out the property for a number of years I would encourage you to make use of HMRC’s Let Property Campaign. This allows taxpayers the opportunity to come forward and disclose rental income- in exchange for the best possible terms from HMRC. Disclaimer: advice shared in this blog is intended to inform rather than advise. Taxpayer’s circumstances do vary and if you feel that the information provided is beneficial it is important that you contact us before implementation . The Biggest Event In Our History….. Pro Wrestling Chaos was established in early 2013 with their first show in Yate in June, the project was developed by a team of 3 wrestlers who each had over 13 years experience with the aim to put on shows that they primarily as fans would want to see. Since then they've gone from strength to strength with the company expanding throughout Bristol now with venues in Yate, Knowle, Filton and also Hanham. The 1st show in June 2013 had 150 fans attend, as they line up for the companies biggest show, they are looking to fill a 500 seater venue. But the company are confident they can achieve this. 'What we've been really happy to see is people are recognising our brand, we're able to sell a large number of tickets without even announcing matches now. The most encouraging thing is when we speak to people who generally are not wrestling fans who bring along family members and comment that they've really enjoyed themselves. This isn't the same as the old World of Sport show from the 1980's, nor is it trying to be like the current WWE product. We have a genuine niche identity that fans have connected with and it's something we are very proud of.'

Announced already for this show on May 23rd is the 'King of Chaos' Champion Mike Bird taking on the finalist of TNA's British Bootcamp, Rampage Brown. Dave Mercy and 'Flash' Morgan Webster will settle a 6 month feud in a 'Loser leaves Chaos' match. Aslo TNA's Kenny King will battle the 6 foot 6 'Pride of Wales' Eddie Dennis!

Lets Bake a Cake ! Yummy Carrot Cake Ingredients

For the frosting 

·175g icing sugar

·1½-2 tbsp orange juice

·175g light muscovado sugar

·175ml sunflower oil

·3 large eggs, lightly beaten

Method

·140g grated carrots (about 3 medium)

·100g raisins

·grated zest of 1 large orange

·175g self-raising flour

1.Preheat the oven to 180C/Gas 4/fan 160C. Oil and line the base and sides of an 18cm square cake tin with baking parchment. The easiest way to do this is to cut two long strips the width of the tin and put each strip crossways, covering the base and sides of the tin, with a double layer in the base.

·1 tsp bicarbonate of soda

·1 tsp ground cinnamon

·½ tsp grated nutmeg (freshly grated will give you the best flavour)

2.Tip the sugar into a large mixing bowl, pour in the oil and add the eggs. Lightly mix with a wooden spoon. Stir in the grated carrots, raisins and orange rind. 3.Mix the flour, bicarbonate of soda and spices, then sift into the bowl. Lightly mix all the ingredients – when everything is evenly amalgamated stop mixing. The mixture will be fairly soft and almost runny. 4.Pour the mixture into the prepared tin and bake for 40- 45 minutes, until it feels firm and springy when you press it in the centre. Cool in the tin for 5 minutes, then turn it out, peel off the paper and cool on a wire rack. (You can freeze the cake at this point.) 5.Beat together the frosting ingredients in a small bowl until smooth – you want the icing about as runny as single cream. Set the cake on a serving plate and boldly drizzle the icing back and forth in diagonal lines over the top, letting it drip down the sides.

A Bit Of Politics The dominant event in May is obviously the election. It’s funny to hear people who know us commenting on our perceived political affiliations. This is usually based on us being professionals, independent business owners, Bristol residents etc. Writing from a business point of view it’s fair to say the wonderful thing about Bristol is Independence, therefore to assume that the business owners vote as a block is misguided. We have great interactions with other great Bristol independent owners but I have no idea who they will vote for. However I do know that they give their heart and soul to this city, not just in their shops but in the unseen community work they do. Businesses that don’t have a CSR (Corporate and Social Responsibility) department as the large companies do, but give their time and effort for free, for their community.

May’s Unbeatable Offer Bringing the focus back to Lynne Fernandes Optometrists, our Crizal lens offer continues for one more month. We’re happy to give you a second complimentary pair of spectacle lenses when you buy a complete new pair of glasses. In my view, Crizal coatings are the best available. Please do ask the team why we recommend them over other lenses. At Lynne Fernandes Optometrists we don’t believe in giving you a ‘spare’ pair of specs; every pair we dispense has a primary purpose, they aren’t for keeping in the back of a dusty cupboard. Optometrist of the Year? By the time this article comes out we will know about Lynne’s Optometrist of the Year Award. Yes I’m biased, but I have worked with many of the country’s most qualified, specialised optometrists at Bristol and Manchester Eye Hospitals. I know the leading Independent practice owners, I’ve worked with the industry expert optometrists, yet I think there is no one who demonstrates the all-round excellence Lynne brings to eye care. Yes I’m very proud of my wife. Our new website is proving hugely popular. The stand out feature is MySight, a system we have developed with our software provider to allow you to book appointments online 24/7. My hope is that our openness with prescriptions, price and the excellent service our team provide will combine to give you increased confidence in trusting us with your eye care and eye wear. Sing For Your Health! Ask any singer about how good singing makes them feel and how it reduces stress levels. Singing is an aerobic activity that increases oxygenation in the blood stream. Even when you’re sitting down, singing exercises major muscle groups in the upper body,. This is due to the action of the endocrine system which is linked to our sense of emotional well-being. Singing in the shower or when doing the housework will do the trick, but even better is singing in a group. Making music together, creating harmony is uplifting, and the bonding and mutual support are life enhancing. Regular exercising of the vocal cords can even prolong life, according to research done by leading vocal coach and singer Helen Astrid, from The Helen Astrid Singing Academy in London. "It’s a great way to keep in shape because you are exercising your lungs and heart. Not only that, your body produces ‘feel good’ hormones called endorphins, which rush around your body when you sing. It’s exactly the same when you eat a bar of chocolate. The good news with singing is that you don’t gain any calories!" A joint Harvard and Yale study showed that choral singing increased the life expectancy of the population of New Haven, Connecticut. The report concluded that this was because singing promoted both a healthy heart and an enhanced mental state.
