Disney is set to receive an insurance payout of £41 million, following the death of Carrie Fisher in late December 2016 – potentially one of the largest personal accident payouts in history. Whenever any person dies, it has a huge impact on loved ones, but the death of Star Wars actress, Carrie Fisher has had more than just an emotional impact on those who knew her. The world-renowned movie and theme park giant, Disney, which owns Lucasfilm and the Star Wars franchise, took out a $50 million (£41 million) contractual protection insurance policy with Lloyds of London on Carrie Fisher. This was put in place to protect from any losses made should Fisher become unable to complete the three upcoming Star Wars films she was cast in. Fisher did appear in 2015's “The Force Awakens” and she had also finished filming “Episode VIII: The Last Jedi”, which is due for release in December 2017. However, her character Princess Leia was also expected to feature in a third movie, which hadn’t started filming when she died following a heart attack on a flight between London and Los Angeles.
Studio bosses at Disney have yet to comment on the policy and its implications, but insurance contracts covering major film companies for the unexpected death or incapacity of actors aren’t uncommon in Hollywood. Carrie Fisher was a hero to fans around the world, not just for her acting but also as a writer, comedian and advocate for people with mental health issues. This insurance policy as well as the huge response from millions of people globally, show the difference one life can make to so many people – highlighting the importance of planning for the future. If you’ve yet to think about planning for your future or writing your Will to protect your family from significant financial impact, Legally Secure are experts in this field and can talk you through how to create or update your Will.

THE WORD ON THE STREET A load of rubbish By Eileen Means This weekend two contrasting news items stuck in my mind. One was a photograph in the ‘Evening Post’ and local social media of an overflowing litter bin in Castle Park surrounded by disgusting crap – only word for it. This visually reflects the cuts in services that Bristol City Council is forced to impose thanks to the Conservative Government’s punitive budget cuts on local government.
Newish voluntary organisations like ‘The Repair Café’ in Fishponds that meet on the first Saturday of every month at All Saints Church in Fishponds can show us how to reuse, repair and recycle things that we might throw away. The many voluntary groups of Friends of our local parks such as the Friends of Stoke Park or the Friends of Horfield Common do regular clean-ups, only for other thoughtless and uncaring hooligans to pollute them with litter again. So why doesn’t everyone in Bristol care about their environment and at the least take their litter home rather than dropping it in our parks and on our streets? Bristol is such a beautiful place with many secret gardens and green places.
The other news item was the launch of the Mayor’s ‘Clean Up Bristol’ campaign. The Mayor of Bristol and Bristol Waste Company have the worthy goal of making Bristol cleaner by 2020. Bristol Waste Company and the Council have set up easy ways to report fly-tipping and litter, but surely we as people who are proud of our city ought to do our bit? It is up to individuals, families, schools, and businesses to take collective responsibility to keep our local areas tidy.

Just come along and give bowling a try! The day that all bowlers look forward to through the dark days of winter finally arrived at the City and Port of Bristol Club on Monday April 10th when the green was declared open for bowling. It wasn’t long before the first roll up of the season was in progress and others followed ---- all keen to bowl that first wood and once again feel the pleasure that comes from the game of bowls.
One friendly fixture to look forward to is the one on July 1st when the visitors will be Bexhill. This is a return match from one played as part of the Eastbourne based tour last September. It is always pleasing when a club accepts the invitation to play a return game. Tuesday evening’s sessions for new bowlers have started and will run most Tuesdays through the season. Sessions start at 6pm , are free of charge, all equipment supplied ---- just come along and give bowling a try.
Two days later it was time for the season’s first friendly game ---- at Wrington on the all-weather green. It is never easy playing against bowlers well practiced on the artificial surface but it was an enjoyable afternoon and City and Port did manage to win a rink! The first week-end friendly was at home to Bradley Stoke on Easter Sunday. Also a very enjoyable afternoon which saw the visitors come out on top overall. The first of this seasons ten Ladies Only games was played at Avonmouth on Thursday April 20th. Not the warmest of afternoons but an enjoyable game and the chance to renew acquaintances with the clubs nearest bowling neighbours. It was a close and well contested game which City and Port won by a narrow margin. David Hinksman and Trevor Scanlon are this year’s club representatives in the City and County Pairs and will play Eddie Rockey and Alan Ball of Bristol BC in a preliminary round at home on May 2nd. The men’s Bristol and District League commences on Thursday April 27th and City and Port start the campaign with a home game against St.Annes Park. Captain Bill Hatherall will be looking to bounce back to division three after a disappointing 2016 season that saw relegation to division four. The Ladies League season starts for the City and Port with a visit to Olveston on May 3rd. Playing in Division Two and able to look back on a good 2016 season the hope for this season is to go one better and rise to the top division. For further information about the Bowling Club and its activities please call David Hinksman on 0117 9082713.

Take time to sharpen your axe Lumberjacks Bob and Jo were taking part in a tree felling competition. The rules of the competition were simple. The person who cut down the most trees in 8 hours won. Both guys were physically up to the task and started swinging their axes purposefully, accurately and effectively. Trees were being felled but Bob was confused that when occasionally he stopped to take a breath, he noticed Jo was sat down crouched over his axe. With the time ticking on, Bob continued like a complete hero, sinking the blade into the trunks of the trees. He was bemused that Jo needed longer breaks than him - seemingly praying to his axe. The hours passed by and when both men were ordered to stop, the judge was sent into the felled area to count how many trees each had cut down. The judge completed the count and asked the two lumberjacks to come forwards.
The judge proclaimed “The winner of the competition is …… Jo”. Bob was astonished, crestfallen, even more confused. Bob went over to Jo to congratulate him and said “But whenever I looked up from felling you were sat down looking at your axe”. Jo replied “Bob – during those moments I was not so much resting, but sharpening my axe”. All too often in business, and particularly with small owner manager businesses, there is the desire to be successful and consequently owners feel unable to take a break, relax and recharge. The truth is these owners become less and less productive, worn out, and their ability to focus on the important things diminished. As we head into the more sunny time of the year, remember to take a holiday, walk in the evening, turn off the phone, protect one day of each week to recharge and recuperate. Use this time to allow fresh thoughts and considerations take place about your job or business. In essence – take time to sharpen your axe.

Finding a garage you can trust is never simple, but it can be done. For every one bad garage, there are ten other brilliant ones with honest mechanics just trying to help you get back on the move. The problem is being able to tell the difference between them!
Garages have to display their insurance and certificates in plain sight for customers to read so you’ll know a garage can be trusted when you see their certificates displayed clearly. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is! If a mechanic tells you that they can deliver a full MOT for £20 then you’re probably going to have a bad time…
Using Direct Motors guide below we can help make sure you find the right garage. .Make sure the mechanic explains everything when you take your car to a mechanic it’s important that you understand what is included in the repair. Make sure to ask plenty of questions so you know how long the repair should take and what costs will be involved. The more you understand about the work a mechanic does, the more comfortable you’ll be and if the mechanic is willing to discuss everything, you can trust them to do an honest job. Read customer reviews Garages rely on reputation and word of mouth to generate business because drivers trust other drivers when it comes to deciding which garage to go to. If you get told not to take your car to a certain garage, you’ll make sure to avoid it!
The fact is, if you choose the cheapest option when it comes to repairing your car, you are taking a risk, at the end of the day, you get what you pay for. We understand that money plays a huge part in the decision-making process, however, you should always be weary of prices that are very cheap. Ask about which parts they’re using
The same goes for good garages, if you hear good feedback, you’ll most likely trust your friend or family member and take your car for repair. If you don’t have anybody to recommend a garage to you, there are thousands of online reviews which rate garages.
You may not know this but if you need a part of your car replacing, there are several options a mechanic may take:.
Make sure to read reviews of a garage online before taking your car to a mechanic as you’ll get a feeling of the trustworthiness of a garage by listening to drivers who have had repairs before.
The price of repair may change depending on the parts used, so it’s always worth asking where the garage has sourced their parts. If a mechanic isn’t happy with telling you, you might want to go elsewhere!
Check accreditations and awards
They could get a component made by a parts manufacturer.
Garages are required to carry certain accreditations in order to operate in the UK and you should always make sure a garage carries the correct certification before agreeing to have a repair carried out.

SUMMER SOLSTICE Once again we are almost at the summer solstice. And we are seeing trees in blossom flowers beginning to bloom .Hopefully your ambitions, or ideas from the spring or beginning to become fulfilled. Sometimes things that we hoped for can take a little longer to begin to flourish. But with patience and action, things will change as they always do. Enjoy this time of late spring, and as much as you can, try to get out into the fresh air, royal garden, or anywhere that you feel peaceful and calm. And enjoy the beauty of this time when the flowers are springing up, and the trees are coming into blossom. Celebrations for this time do not have to be fancy. Even on the solstice, just a simple acknowledgement of the fact we have reached the Time of year, when the Sun is at its highest, of the longest amount of daylight and the shortest night.
With many blessings to you, Marie 24. The Directory
