Mikes letter
First things first I hope everyone is staying safe and are well! There will be light at the end of the tunnel, a wise man said to me a fews days ago “ Be thankful for what we have and take each day as it comes never lose hope and stay positive” With the media ramping up our anxiety every day maybe we should avoid the news and focus on the positives like more family time at home, getting those DIY jobs done, gardening play some board games or even have a few quiet drinks at home. The world was so fast paced we had very little time for anything. . The other day I went shopping in the morning and on the drive home I found myself driving at a leisurely pace with some music playing singing out loud to myself, not because I have no cares in the world thats so far away from the truth being self-employed. But because I’ll have no control over what happens next. So just enjoy this extended break where you can. Finally a message to our front line key workers especially the NHS bloody well done and a massive thank you to you all. #staypositive Till next month stay at home ,protect the NHS and save lives

BRISTOL FERTILITY EXPERTS WELCOME PUBLIC CONSULTATION ON 10 YEAR LIMIT FOR EGG FREEZING A public consultation just launched by the Department of Health and Social Care into whether the UK’s current 10-year time limit on storing frozen eggs and sperm should be extended has been welcomed by fertility experts at the Bristol Centre for Reproductive Medicine (BCRM).
The expertise of the team at BCRM, together with the use of the latest vitrification techniques, means that over 90% of the frozen eggs survive when thawed, sustaining the dream of motherhood for many women who choose or to have a baby in their thirties or early forties.
Dr Valentine Akande, who heads the team, said: “We strongly support this review because destroying eggs which could remove the possibility of women having children does not seem fair.
The clinic has the highest success rate in the South West for IVF, with 33% of embryos transferred resulting in births.
“The thing is, eggs from a woman aged 25 which are frozen and stored will be of better quality than a woman’s fresh eggs 10 years later when she’s 35, so extending this time limit would have a really positive impact for many women.”
According to the latest report on trends and figures in fertility treatment by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (published May 2019), the number of egg-freezing cycles commenced in the UK has more than trebled in the period 2012-17, with just 410 egg freezing cycles in 2012 compared with 1,462 in 2017. Because of the current 10-year legal deadline, a woman who has had her eggs frozen is forced by the law to decide towards the end of this period whether those eggs should be destroyed or whether she wishes to try for a baby. Caroline Dinenage, the minister for social care, said: “Every person should be given the best possible opportunity to start a family, which is why it is so important that our laws reflect the latest in technological advancements. “I am particularly concerned by the impact of the current law on women’s reproductive choices. A time limit can often mean women are faced with the heartbreaking decision to destroy their frozen eggs, or feel pressured to have a child before they are ready. “As the number of people seeking this storage rises, we want to hear from the public about whether the law is fair and proportionate, and ensure everyone is empowered to choose when they become parents.” Any member of the public wishing to contribute their views on changing the time limit for storing gametes (eggs and sperm) and embryos for fertility treatment can contribute at https://www. gov.uk/government/consultations/egg-sperm-andembryo-storage-limits .The consultation closes at 11:59pm on 5 May 2020.

Your Garden In April
Spring should be well under way this month with daffodils in full flow, their bright flowers enough to cheer up any day. Blossom trees will be blooming and fresh growth will be appearing on plants everywhere. April showers are common but don’t be deceived by sudden bursts of rainfall – you may need to start watering plants more regularly on dry, bright and windy days. With longer days and stronger sunshine growing conditions are continually improving and the warmer weather will give us all the opportunity to get busy in our gardens. Sow hardy annuals Hardy annuals are plants that can be sown from seed in the open ground. Get them off to an early start by sowing in pots or modules. Modular trays are also handy for sowing summer bedding plants such as marigolds, lobelia and petunias. Label each seed tray and once they are growing put them outside when the weather is warm day and night. Support climbers Climbing plants should be growing rapidly now, so will need ample support for new growth. Extend or replace trellis as necessary or add more wire to archers and tripods. New shoots will need to be gently encouraged sideways as they grow. This will send vital growth hormones doing the length of the shoot rather than just to the tip and so will encourage flowering all over the plant.
The rest of the garden will also be growing well now, so if you have been putting off carrying out any major pruning then now is the time to bite the bullet and get it done. Trees, shrubs and hedges should be cut back now before birds begin to nest. Care for your lawn The lawn will need regular mowing from now until autumn. Get some maintenance carried out to your lawn mower to ensure it stays in good running order – at the very least your mower blades should be newly sharpened ready for regular use. Keep the edges of the lawn tidy after mowing with a sharp pair of shears or a lawn edger. Don’t forget to give the lawn a spring feed after mowing if you haven’t got around to doing it yet. If a more drastic approach is needed to spruce up your lawn, sowing seeds for new lawns or over seeding dead patches can be carried out from mid-April onwards. Plant of the month: Rhododendron Why should you plant them? Ancient Greek meaning “Rose tree’ the rhododendron family includes azaleas. These stunning shrubs flower in all sorts of vibrant colours and can help brighten those difficult dark spots in your garden. Rhododendrons are grown for their spectacular flowers usually borne in spring, although some – the deciduous rhododendron or azaleas have good autumn colour. How should you plant them? In the wild rhododendrons are woodland plants, so they prefer dappled sunshine and can manage well in shade. They like plenty of water however and will not do well in boggy or badly draining soil, so drainage is key. Plant in autumn or spring and use ericaceous compost. 7

These little checks in advance, you might be able to save £££'s. Horn This one is nice and simple, but believe it or not, your car will fail its MOT if the horn is faulty, so make sure yours works…beep beep! Oil Make sure your oil is topped up to the correct level or the test centre can refuse to carry out the MOT on your vehicle. This is because they will be unable to test your emissions. How to: Grab a rag and pop your bonnet. Locate the dipstick (usually with a yellow or orange plastic handle) and pull out. Give it a wipe and put back in. Remove one more time and check the reading. There should be a min and max mark at the end of the dipstick. If it’s below the minimum then top up with manufacturer approved oil. Oil and filter changes are recommended every 10,000 miles or 12 months (check your vehicle handbook to be sure) – basically whichever comes first. These can be done quite easily at home and require minimal equipment but be warned…it can be messy. Exterior Lights According to the RAC, 18.9% of cars fail their MOT for something as minor as a blown bulb. It’s a super easy check to do by switching on all your lights and walking around your car to see if they’re all working. If any don’t work, you can replace these yourself for a fraction of what a garage will charge. When it comes to the brake lights, you may need to enlist some help from a friend or family member. Alternatively, a reflective surface such a window would be just as effective. Number plates Not only do your number plates need to be visible and in good condition but they also need to be up to DVLA standard. That means no patterned backgrounds or italic fonts and even the letter spacing must be correct. If your number plate doesn’t conform to these rules then it’s an instant MOT fail as well as a possible £1,000 fine if caught by police.
Warning lights Check that all the dashboard lights come on when you start the car then disappear after a few seconds. If any of the lights stay lit then arrange to have your motor to be checked over. If you feel confident, you can try resolving them yourself eg. If the oil light is on, is your oil fully topped up? Tyres On average, 10% of motorists get an MOT failure due to their tyres not being up to scratch. Spend a bit of time checking each tyre carefully for lumps, bulges or cuts and double check that the tread is road legal. A simple way check the tread depth is to do the 20p test. If you put a 20p into your tread and the inner edge can’t be seen then your tyres are legal. If you can see the edge then you will need to think about getting new tyres. Clean car Your car won’t fail because it’s a little messy but if it’s filthy inside or out (or both) then the garage can refuse to test it on health and safety grounds. Research found that over 1,000 drivers were refused an MOT because their vehicles were that dirty or inaccessible. So when you take your car in, make sure that both number plates are visible, the lights are clean and that the interior is clutter free. Windscreen Apart from the obvious cracks and chips, another common failure is having an obscured driving view with things like hanging air fresheners, stickers and phone cradles being the biggest culprits. Make sure these objects are removed before your MOT to prevent an unnecessary fail. Also, its good practice to ensure your wiper blades are in good condition and your screen wash is fully topped up. Mirrors To pass your MOT, you need to have a minimum of one offside mirror and one interior mirror but its good practice to have all three in working order this means no cracks that impair your view. If you do have any issues with your mirrors, try to get these replaced before your MOT giving you time to shop around and getting the best quote.

April Horoscopes
Aquarius Jan 20-Feb 18 Clear communication would be a real asset to you at this time. There is something you have either put on the back burner or chosen to ignore but it is something you would be wiser to deal with at this time. Whatever is going on for you that is difficult, remember you have a lot of resilience and inner strength, and you will find the right way to deal with things. Keywords: Clear communication & Resilience Pisces Feb 19 - Mar 20 You feel that something may not have been dealt with fairly, this could be a situation with a family member or someone close to you. Step back and try and see the situation from all sides and try to bring some change and balance back. Keywords: Fairness & Change Aries Mar 21 - Apr 19 If you are involved in meetings at this time they may not run as smoothly as you would like or not even happen at all. If the situation feels difficult remember to keep calm. You may also feel time for spring-cleaning, both on the physical and emotional levels. Keywords: Calm & Clearing Taurus Apr 20 - May 20 You could get one of those wonderful lightbulb moments, when something inspiring or enlightening suddenly makes sense. You may find the need to bring some harmony to a difficult situation. There could be some small but interesting changes that are coming your way. Keywords: Sudden realisation & Changes Gemini May 21 - June 20 Be careful in situations that could become volatile, especially in communication, try to be a listener as much as possible. Otherwise things could get into a bit of a tangle. Know that you can deal with and rise above a difficult situation. Keywords: Listen & Inner wisdom Cancer June 21 - July 22 Relationships are a high point this month, as well as possible a small refresh in the home. If something is a bit hard going at the moment, you will find that you will have the strength and endurance to go through this relatively plain sailing Keywords: Opportunities & Relationships
Leo July 23 - Aug 22 If something isn’t moving as quickly as you would like, this could be a good time to sort and clear what needs doing. As this can make way for new things and ideas. Keywords: Clearing & New ideas and things Virgo Aug 23 - Sept 22 Balance and harmony are very important to you, somebody doesn’t always bring your sensitivity to the fore, as this will be an asset in this situation. You may also think of starting a new interest, that will involve collecting things or gathering information. Keywords: Sensitivity, connecting & Gathering Libra Sept 23 - Oct 22 It does seem as though study is on your mind at present. You may find yourself either researching or seeking information regarding things of interests to you. You may also feel the need to clear things both emotionally and within your living spaces, as you feel there maybe new things on the way. There is possibly an issue that you will have to deal with later in the month. Keywords: Study & Clearing Scorpio Oct 23 - Nov 21 This may not be one of the easiest times, as you feel as though you need to be on your guard. A situation would be worth stepping back from, and trying to see it from a different perspective. This month would be good for you to follow those instinctive feelings, and work with your intuition. Remember also you are a lot stronger than you think. Keywords: Protection & Intuition Sagittarius Nov 22 - Dec 21 There is something you’ve been putting off that you need to sort out and this would be a good time to do so. You can do the same with some spring cleaning, both in your physical environment and possibly emotionally too.Once you have sorted a few things out it will give you the space to be able to carry on with some hobbies and a few relaxing things that you have not had time for. Capricorn Dec 22 0 Jan 19 Your social life won’t be busy this month. A few things look to change for you, so be prepared. Could be a time for reflection and from this some study or research or new interests or hobbies, may come from this. Keywords. Learning and changes
