Editors words So summer is over and the school holidays have ended. Some people will be glad some people will be sad especially the kids that have to go back to school. However, this marks for me the big build up to my favourite time of year, and yes I am gonna say it “Christmas” I know you all are going to say but we have Halloween and Bonfire night to look forward too yet! But not for me I totally am sold on the whole thing each year. Anyway moving on, there seems to be a ton of things to do over the next few weeks including the Bristol 10k and half marathon on the 15th September, I would like to wish everyone thats taking part the very best of luck. But if your planning on traveling near the event beware as most of the roads will be closed off nearby. For more information on local events head to our whats on section on page 12. Finally I would love to hear from our readers and get some feed back on what you would like to see in your local magazines, maybe you want more local news or more local events or just maybe you want to tell us how informative our local magazine really is. Thank you for supporting us over the years.

Your Garden In September
Summer is coming to an end with the month of September generally being a cooler month than August. The days are becoming noticeably shorter, but the weather is, however usually warm and calm, giving us the ideal conditions to plant trees and shrubs. It’s a great time of the year to appreciate those long lasting plants that flower into autumn and if you have a fruit or vegetable patch you’ll be busy reaping the rewards of a hopefully successful harvest. Don’t forget - if you look forward to a great spring display of colour then now is the time to buy and plant your bulbs. Whatever you’re doing in your garden this month, be sure to make the most of the remaining warmth while you can.
Divide herbaceous perennials September is a good month to lift and divide summer-flowering herbaceous perennials. Most perennials need to be divided every three to five years as the plant can become too big for the border and become congested. Dividing will invigorate the plant and help to improve flowering and overall shape next year. Gently dig out the plant you want to divide, being careful not to damage the roots. Use a garden fork to separate the plant into two then shake of any excess soil and replant in your chosen spot as soon as possible. Take Perennial cuttings Take cuttings of perennials such as fuchsia, salvia, verbena, penstemon and chrysanthemum. It’s a great way to increase the number of plants you have for your summer display and there’s something really satisfying about seeing plants grow that you’ve created yourself. Find some strong growth that hasn’t flowered this year and cut a 5 - 10 cm stem just below a leaf joint.
6
Strip the leaves from the lower stem and leave one or two pairs at the top. Dip the end in hormone rooting powder and plant in pots of compost mixed with grit. Leave the pots somewhere bright and warm until rooted then re-pot into larger containers. Over winter in the greenhouse or conservatory. Plant spring flowering bulbs Bulbs make a fine display planted in containers and borders, especially Tulips, Snowdrops and Daffodils. They are one of the easiest and most rewarding plants to grow and are great for adding colour to spring borders. Tulips come in a huge variety of colours and bloom at a time of year when there is very little colour in the garden. snowdrops, appearing before the tulips, are one of the earliest flowering plants in the garden. When the snowdrops begin to fade, the daffodil begins to appear, with its cheery shades of yellow brightening the borders.
Looking good this month Hebe ‘Bowles’s Variety’ Why should you plant them? Hebe ‘Bowles’s Variety’ is an evergreen, rounded shrub with ovate, glossy green leaves that make a very attractive plant for borders and containers. Easy to care for, this Hebe is drought tolerant and flowers prolifically in summer.
How should you plant them ? The variety of Hebe flowers best when planted in full sun. the addition of a good quality compost when planting is essential to prevent the roots becoming too dry. After flowering, sheer back dead flower stems to keep the plant looking full.
What is Equity Release? By using an equity release product, a homeowner aged over 55, can draw a lump sum or regular smaller sums from the value of their home, while remaining in their home.
And of course, they can also explain the full benefits of equity release. Done correctly, equity release should have no impact on an individual’s tax position or their state benefits; however, everyone’s circumstances need to be assessed.
Equity release can play a crucial role in retirement funding and the flexibility and safeguards which are built into plans that comply with the Equity Release Council product standards enable thousands of homeowners every year to tap safely into their housing wealth without having to worry about making monthly repayments. If you are thinking of taking out an equity release plan, then you need to find out as much as you can about your options and weigh up the advantages and disadvantages fully before you decide if equity release is right for you. A fully qualified financial adviser should help you to understand the steps involved and talk you through your options, the effects this might have on state benefits and tax and your obligations.
Part of a customer’s choice will be over the type of plan required. In the modern equity release market, there are a range of products to choose from, with new and innovative products being created regularly. This means that whatever your equity release needs, there is likely to be an equity release plan available to meet them.

City & Port of Bristol Bowls Club With the season now entering its final month there is still plenty of bowling to be enjoyed, trophies to be won and memories to be taken from what has been a full and at times very warm Summer. The first silverware of the 2019 season --- the Jack Ashton Triples has already been won. On Sunday July 28th Julie Looker, Howard Surman and Ken Grimes took the trophy by just one point by winning their final game of the afternoon. Named after a Past President ( 1987-90) the trophy is played for annually and this year saw six teams of three --- all drawn on the day ---compete against each other in three games of forty five minutes duration with two points awarded for a win and one for a draw. The runners up --- Gill Hinksman, David Hinksman and Ali Weston won their first two games but couldn’t manage a third win against the eventual winners who had one won and drawn one of their first two games ---- all very close and enjoyable. The other competition to be played and decided on one day is the Two Wood Pairs. Unfortunately it fell victim to the weather when it was due to be played on August 10th. It will now be played at a later date.
The Ladies League season ended with an away game at Greenbank on August 2nd. The result was an overall win and eight points for City and Port to hold on to third place in Division Two – just six points behind GB Britton and promotion to Division One. This was their second successive third place finish --- a very good achievement --- can they go one better next season? The Men’s League Team has had a much better second half of the season with some good wins over Bristol Arrow and Keynsham C late in July and early August, to move them away from the foot of the table. The club now has two qualified Level Two coaches. Gill and David Hinksman are now able to coach at club level without external support or observation. The club has a new green keeper --- Avon Sportsground Maintenance took over from John Swift on August 1st. It is not too late to come to the green in Nibley Road and try your hand at bowling. Sessions are free of charge and all equipment is supplied. Tuesday evenings from 6pm are set aside for new bowlers to come and roll their first wood on a green but sessions can be provided on other days and times by arrangement. Bowling is the sport for all so why not come and try it.
All other competitions are played round by round over a period of time with a Grand Finals Week-End on September 7th and 8th. This season will see more finals played than in recent seasons For further information about the club and its activities so a full and exciting week-end of bowling is in please call David Hinksman prospect. on 0117 9082713.

Summer maybe over but do not worry as Cineworld has some great movies lined up in September . The summer season might quickly be coming to a close, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t still plenty of hot new cinema releases to see at your local Cineworld.
Downton Abbey Movie
Whether you’re into high-concept space adventures, English period dramas or the return of legendary heroes, here’s the best of what September has to offer film fans. Kicking us off on 13th September, the Crawley family makes the jump from small to silver screen with the release of the Downton Abbey movie. Penned again by the show’s creator, Julian Fellowes, things are fastforwarded to 1927, where everyone is getting ready for a royal visit from the King and Queen.
Ad Astra
Then, just five days later, Brad Pitt embarks on a dangerous space mission in search of his long-lost father. Ad Astra is a science-fiction thriller that promises to depict the most realistic space travel ever seen in a film, bringing strong competition to Chris Nolan’s Interstellar. Sly Stallone’s grizzled war hero returns then next day on 19th September with Rambo: Last Blood. The difference this time, however, is that the danger has arrived on his home turf, but has he still got what it takes to save his friend’s daughter from a Mexican cartel?
Rambo Last Blood
Finally, The Goldfinch arrives on 27th September, promising an in-depth look into the world of art forgery. Ansel Elgort from The Fault in Our Stars is in the leading role, joined by other huge actors like Nicole Kidman and Sarah Paulson. And remember, as always Cineworld Bristol and Direct Local Magazine are giving readers a chance to win a prize. Simply fill out the next page word search. With so much to see, which September movie do you plan on seeing first at Cineworld?

Changing Lives Changing Lives shops and retail warehouse are a social enterprise owned by local charity; Changing Lives Charity.
CHANGING LIVES
The charity helps those in need due to addiction issues, poor education, and/or leaving the criminal justice and care systems. It does this through funding Andrew House in Clevedon, a supported house for men in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction, and via the Changing Lives shops, in which the charity runs the Volunteer Plus Programme. Surplus income from the shops is used to fund Andrew House, and residents and those in the local community who face barriers to paid employment, are offered to join the Volunteer Plus Programme. Volunteer Plus participants are given education, work based training and employment (unpaid), which enhances their CVs and increases self-confidence, that has most likely been negatively affected by their past
“Donations from the general public are vital to our efforts to support the charity. We are always in need of great quality, pre-used items, small and large. We can take furniture, electrical items, clothing, entertainment items, children’s toys, and much more. You can drop your items into our Clevedon shop (Kenn Road) and retail warehouse (Kimberley Road) between 9am – 5pm.
We also provide a collection service for larger items such as sofas, table and chairs, bedroom furniture and garden furniture. Sofas need to have fire regulation labels still attached. If you are unsure whether your item is donatable, please send a photo via Facebook @changinglivesretailwarehouse or call 01275 878871.
“We would like to highlight two aspects of the social enterprise; house clearances and donations. We provide a house clearance service for solicitors, estate agents, people who are downsizing or those who are dealing with the estate of a loved one. After the passing of a loved one, Mr Thorne needed to get the flat cleared quickly and as you can read, he was very happy with our quick, efficient, sensitive and fairly priced house clearance. “” I found Jeff (Changing Lives house clearance valuer) was very good and fair with pricing on a very delicate subject. When the men came to do the removal, on a cold & wet day, they just got on with it and cleared the whole flat out, as agreed at the first meeting.”” Call our House Clearance number 01275 870117 to arrange a visit from Jeff.”
Please support your local charity so that we can continue to support local people who want to change their lives! #shop #volunteer #donate.”

Shirehampton Markets Now Open.
The local High Street is dying but one Bristol community in Shirehampton is fighting back and opening a selection of markets to support and help their local High Street and the local shop traders are supporting it too.
Garry Thomas, Postmaster of Shirehampton Post Office has seen many changes to the High Street over the years and said. “It is imperative we all pull together and support our local High Street. Once it’s gone it’s gone forever.”
The Shirehampton Community Plan highlighted the need for an indoor or outdoor market to add variety and choice of goods not available on the High Street. Like many around the country vital shops were closing only to be replaced by housing or more of the same thing such as take-a-ways, hairdressers and estate agents. This did nothing to encourage people to shop locally.
Whilst Gail Stadon of Stadon Pet Supplies added “The markets will bring diversity and equality to the community”.
Despite a couple of false starts Shirehampton Markets is now a reality with a core market team of Ash Bearman, Katherine Birth and Kathryn Courtney-O'Neill, bringing together a whole host of skills and knowledge to make it happen. With the help of volunteers, Shirehampton Markets is run by the community for the communities of Shirehampton, Avonmouth, Sea Mills, Lawrence Weston, Kings Weston and Coombe Dingle in mind. Anything beyond that will be an added bonus. Ash Bearman said “We are delighted to be opening our very first High Street Market in Shirehampton at 10am on 5th September at the Tithe Barn with more markets to follow on a monthly basis. It's taken a lot of work to get this up and running. We are turning a community idea into a realistic asset for our High Street and communities, so please support it.” Many of the High Street traders and businesses have been enthusiastic and supportive as they see the markets encouraging more people to visit and explore the local High Street.

The High Street Market will feature quality items for sale at reasonable prices that are not primarily available on our local High Street. One such market trader who will be there is Steve Harvey of ‘ Fishman With A Difference.’ Shirehampton has greatly missed a Fishmonger and it was top of the list of requests by the community. “I’m looking forward to meeting people who love good quality fish and shellfish. I’ve heard the story of the cockle lady who has not been forgotten ocally and yes I will be selling cockles which are a very popular choice with my customers.” Said Steve. The monthly High Street Markets are just one part of Shirehampton Markets plans. There will be annual themed markets that will be held on a Saturday at Shirehampton Public Hall as one off events. From health and wellbeing, arts and crafts, Christmas, to sustainability, cultural and gardens. All very much community orientated. Exciting times are ahead for 2020 too. Shirehampton Markets can be found on facebook for regular news updates: www.facebook.com/shirehamptonmarkets If market traders want further information about booking a stall/pitch please email: shirehamptonmarkets@outlook.com

Say hello to your local consultants
Hello, my name is Janice,
Hello, my name is Kelly,
I became a member of the Slimming World Patchway Group in 1989and I remember that day like it was yesterday. I was so nervous walking into my first group, but I was soon made to feel very welcome and at ease.
I became a member in 1995 and in my first year I lost an unbelievable 4 stone not long after I was given the chance to become a consultant.
The following week I followed the food optimising plan and on my first weigh in I lost a fantastic 7lb!!! From that day I was hooked. After achieving my target weight after losing 3 stone I was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to become a consultant. I started by taking over the Patchway Group in May 1990 closely followed by the Seamills group in August the same year.
Working hard to help local people to be successful like me gained me the prestigious gold award and become a senior consultant in 2008 with my Thursday Shirehampton group it became so popular I now run 4 sessions on a Thursday and have now opened a Saturday morning group. As my colleagues have said nothing is banned at Slimming World whatever you like to eat, we can help you do it the Slimming World way.
I’m passionate about my job and I am proud to have helped hundreds of members over the years lose thousands of pounds to achieve their dream. So, come along to one of mine or my colleagues’ groups and discover the fun and friendly way to lose weight and feel great.

I joined Slimming World in 2003 to lose weight for my wedding. It was one of the worst and best nights of my life. The worst because I was so nervous and petrified about what the scales would say but mostly,
Hello, my name is Jane, I was reffered to slimming world by my GP in 2017 and will never forget how upset i was with myself for getting to that point. I was so scared and ashamed it took me 3 attempts to actually walk through the doors. When i eventually did i was instantly made to feel so welcome and put at ease. The food optimising plan was explained and even with my vegan diet so easy to follow with nothing banned even chips, curries and pizzas so i couldn’t wait to get started. My first week whizzed by and with so many tasty meals and not even feeling hungry i was amazed at -4 1/2lb on my first weigh in! That was it i never looked back. Fast forward 6 months and 3 1/2 stone lighter i ws given the opportunity to become a consultant and jumped at the chance to help change other peoples lives the way mine had. So for anybody out there thinking of joining us please pop along, see how friendly and supportive we are and how easy food optimising is.....A year from now you will be glad you joined today. Jane x

Hello, my name is Helen,
I thought this was yet another ‘diet’ that probably wouldn’t work – how wrong was I? It was also the best night of my life because to literally changed my life forever in such a positive way. Whizz forward 15 years and here I am, still 4st lighter (even after 2 children and few all-inclusive holidays!!) loving life, food and clothes shopping and best of all I’m loving my life as a consultant. Every Monday, In Henbury and Brentry Community centre I help two groups learn all about food optimising, swap recipe ideas and share their success. My members are all amazing, I still learn a new recipe every week! My all-time favourites though are spaghetti Bolognese, Risotto, Curry and Pizza – yes you can have pizza and lose weight!! So, If you’d like to join one of my lovely groups just pop along, I’d love to help you! Helen x

The fly problem in Avonmouth Avonmouth’s notorious fly problem began with what appeared to be a one-off, horrendous event in May 2014. A ship load of rubbish was being stored at Avonmouth docks ready to be loaded on to ship bound for the continent. But the deal to take the rubbish collapsed, the firm who owned the rubbish, Boomeco, got in to difficulties, and the bales hadn’t been correctly wrapped. The bags were accidentally ripped open when being transported by forklifts and seagulls tore opened the bags where rubbish and gross liquid oozed out, attracting flies.

Tel: 0117 325 7915 Chief executive of the Bristol Port Company, said the port has learned the lessons of the debacle involving Boomeco back in 2014, and now no waste is stored at the docks. If waste is being loaded onto ships, he said it will spend literally seconds, maybe minutes, as it is moved from train carriages or lorries, into the holds of ships.
While that was a one-off, people said they began to see an increase every summer from there on complaints about flies increased has become an annual issue. Back in 2003, Bristol City Council’s Local Plan earmarked Avonmouth as the future site for dealing with Bristol’s waste. Since then, what those in it call the ‘circular economy’ (making money out of extracting anything valuable from the things we throw away, and repurposing or reusing them) has grown large in Avonmouth.
So there we have it folks the cause of the flies in the BS11 postcode is incompetence it seems.

The Summer Holidays are Over! Within a few days, schools will be full of pupils, the nights will be drawing in, and the temperature gradually falling. Most of us will be back to work in what is for many businesses one of the busiest quarters in the financial year. As a business person, Are you up for it? Are you ready for it? Have you planned to make this next four months through to Christmas work for you? Here are a few practical things you can do to improve your chances: If you don’t have a landline telephone number on your van, business card or web-site, put one in place Should you only have one line, you are out and about much of the time, or you know you’re missing calls, seriously consider getting a call answering and messaging service to ensure you don’t miss calls – remember a missed call is lost business Introduce a business information system which can look after your clients’ information, your accounts, stock and job management
These things will make your business processes more efficient, capture business which would otherwise have passed you by, and go some way to making this quarter the success for you it ought to be.
Techvolution, working in conjunction with TSA Business Accountants, are happy to talk or meet with you to help you and your business make the most of the opportunity.
