ED’s letter Happy New Year! Have you started your new years resolutions yet? Or have you destroyed them in the first few days ? Statistics say that more than 40% of us will set a weight loss goal and 30% of us will decide to do more exercise. The other 10% will set no goals for this new year. However more shocking is that 80% of the population will give up on their new years resolutions by 1st of February and return to their old ways. On a brighter note as of now the nights will start to get a little bit bearable and brighter thanks to Winter Solstice that took place on 22nd December. Also we all start to plan our next big summer holiday or a small get away, if you want some top tips please read our piece from The Travel Councilors Charlie Dyson on page 20. He has some great ideas to travel to Lisbon, Mauritius and Japan.

2. The City – Lisbon. The Portuguese capital is one of my favourite cities in Europe. Offering narrow cobbled streets, ancient ruins, a lively nightlife with an excellent food scene and stunning panoramic views from one of its seven hilltops. Lisbon really is the perfect location for a weekend or short break. It also offers excellent value with some great hotels at a fraction of the cost of some of Europe’s other capital cities. 3. The Beach – Mauritius. Thinking of Mauritius automatically conjures up images of pristine white sand beaches, blue seas and relaxing with a cocktail in hand. However, this diverse island has a lot more to offer. Spend a couple of weeks here and as well as switching-off on the beach at one of the myriad luxury resorts or in a private villa, you can also spend time in the Black River Gorges National Park witnessing dramatic waterfalls, rare bird species and the luscious green forests of the highlands.

Operetta club locks themselves in the Tower of London - and sings their way out, at the Redgrave Theatre Capital punishment, imprisonment under false charges, and unrequited love are themes that Gilbert and Sullivan manage to transform into comic opera in their work The Yeomen of the Guard which is coming to the Redgrave Theatre in April 2020, performed by Bristol Gilbert and Sullivan Operatic Society (BGSOS). Set in the Tower of London during the reign of King Henry VIII, The Yeomen of the Guard tells the story of the war hero Colonel Fairfax, unjustly framed, imprisoned, and condemned to death for sorcery, and the plot hatched by fellow war hero Sergeant Meryll and his daughter, Phoebe, to free Colonel Fairfax from the Tower of London by disguising him as one of the guardians of the Tower itself: the famous Yeomen of the Guard. The Yeomen of the Guard opened at the Savoy Theatre on 3rd October 1888. It was triumph for composer Arthur Sullivan who had long complained of the plots that WS Gilbert was providing him. Sullivan wanted less absurdity in the stories and something more weighty.
Gilbert eventually came up with the plot for The Yeomen of the Guard and Sullivan thankfully approved. The result is a complex, witty and characterful operetta sure to delight audiences, whether or not they have criminal intentions. “Victorian critics considered the score to be Sullivan’s finest”, says musical director William Stevens, who is in charge of the music for the first time, at BGSOS. “Sullivan’s Yeomen overture is the best structured of the genre, rather than being just a collection of the best tunes of the work”. Yeomen is director Sarah Nash’s second show at the helm. “this opera is Gilbert and Sullivan’s darkest and probably most engaging work and it’s my challenge to bring The Tower and characters to life”, she says. “We have a wonderful talented cast and crew who will be doing the work justice, if I’m permitted to plagiarise one of Gilbert’s many delicious puns.” So why not come along and join us for torture, beheading, a jester, a jailor and the occasional marching on the spot? BGSOS is performing The Yeomen of the Guard 1st - 4th April 2020, with a matinee performance on Saturday 4th April, where children are especially invited, with an opportunity to meet the cast afterwards. Your Garden in January
The garden in January needs to be prepared for all sorts of weathers, and if you’ve been following our advice over the last few months, your hard work is done for now. Most plants are dormant this month as they sleep through the cold weather, but there are still a few things to do in the garden. Spring is just around the corner and work can be done to prepare for the warmth of the new season. When its not too cold, beds and boarders can be dug over and lawn edges can be repaired and re-shaped. Don’t forget to keep feeding the birds, as food is scarce for them over the winter. Protect plants - January is known for cold frosts and bitter winds so plants will need protecting. If you haven’t already done so, ensure protective fleeces are in place on tender plants over-wintering outdoors. Lift containers up onto pot feet – if water isn’t draining away the soil can become water logged. Wet compost can rot roots and cause pots to crack in frost. Remove snow from tree and shrub branches by knocking with a broom. Even a small amount of snow can add a lot of weight to branches, causing them to snap. Dig over bare ground - Run a fork through your vegetable patch or flower beds. This will help to aerate – getting air into the soil is important because plant roots need oxygen. Choose a dry day when the soil isn’t too wet. Don’t break your back breaking down large lumps of soil. Keeping them large can help air circulate and any later frosts will break them up. Feed the birds - Natural food sources for birds are in short supply during the winter. Give them a helping hand by putting food out for them. Keep the food topped up but not full all the time – little and often is best.
Plant of the Month Helleborus Why should you plant them? Popular because they flower in cold winter and early spring, Hellebores herald the start of the New Year bringing a touch of colour to the garden. Commonly know as ‘Christmas Roses’ they are easy to grow and very hardy. They produce attractive flowers and their leaves create a perfect evergreen backdrop to spring flowering bulbs. How should you plant them? Plant in shady herbaceous borders and the areas between deciduous shrubs to give an early splash of colour. Happy in dappled shade they should be planted in rich, heavy soil that won’t dry out in the summer. ideal planting companies include Snowdrops, Primrose, Cornus and Mahonia.

CITY AND PORT OF BRISTOL BOWLS CLUB Glistening Trophies, forty six bowlers, family and friends gathering at the City and Port of Bristol Club on a Friday evening in November can only mean one thing ---- Bowls Club Presentation Evening. Not only the presentations but a magnificent buffet and entertainment in the shape of vocalist Dave Dean to round off an excellent evening, arranged for the bowls club by Lis Davies. The Club President David Hinksman thanked everybody who entered competitions this year ---- without entries there would be no finals and no presentation evening to enjoy. He went on to prese nt most of the winners and runners up trophies and medals ---- there are two presented traditionally by the family of the bowler that the trophy is named after.
Julie and Ken are once again winners of their respective four wood finals and will play in the 2020 Champion of Champions Competition, organised at County Level with, after rounds at local and county wide level lead to the national finals at Leamington Spa. The unwanted Trophy at all Presentation Evenings is the dreaded Wooden Spoon --- awarded to, rather than won by, the team finishing bottom of the Monday night league. This year and not for the first time it went to Hits and Misses and in the absence of captain Brian Crawley it was presented to Ken Davies ----- the only trophy for which he is eligible to win he has not won previously.
Ladies ---- up to three per game, will be allowed to play in the fourth division of the Bristol and District Men’s League next season. After almost ninety years of men only a proposal to allow ladies to play in the bottom division only was passed at the league AGM on December 1st. Looking ahead --- on Saturday 18th January City and Port will play Begbrook Green in the second of three indoor friendly The first of these was the Sid Holmes Handicap games planned for this close season. Say hello to your local consultants Hello, my name is Janice, I became a member of the Slimming World Patchway Group in 1989and I remember that day like it was yesterday. I was so nervous walking into my first group, but I was soon made to feel very welcome and at ease. The following week I followed the food optimising plan and on my first weigh in I lost a fantastic 7lb!!! From that day I was hooked. After achieving my target weight after losing 3 stone I was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to become a consultant. I started by taking over the Patchway Group in May 1990 closely followed by the Seamills group in August the same year.
Hello, my name is Helen, I joined Slimming World in 2003 to lose weight for my wedding. It was one of the worst and best nights of my life. The worst because I was so nervous and petrified about what the scales would say but mostly, I thought this was yet another ‘diet’ that probably wouldn’t work – how wrong was I? It was also the best night of my life because to literally changed my life forever in such a positive way. Whizz forward 15 years and here I am, still 4st lighter (even after 2 children and few all-inclusive holidays!!) loving life, food and clothes shopping and best of all I’m loving my life as a consultant. Every Monday, In Henbury and Brentry Community centre I help two groups learn all about food optimising, swap recipe ideas and share their success. My members are all amazing,
I’m passionate about my job and I am proud to have helped hundreds of members over the years lose thousands of pounds to achieve their dream. So, come along to one of mine or my colleagues’ groups and discover the fun and friendly way to lose weight and feel great.
I still learn a new recipe every week! My all-time favourites though are spaghetti Bolognese, Risotto, Curry and Pizza – yes you can have pizza and lose weight!!

Shirehampton Public Hall Update We have recently volunteered to become Trustees of the wonderful Public hall, and are very grateful for all the fantastic work that has been done by others before us to get the position we are now in. The previous trustees have delivered a great business plan, with ideas and designs to take the hall forward. We have the community plan to work from, which is guiding our thinking, and John Boss from BCC continues to show great enthusiasm and guidance for the project The Continuing Vision We want to make the Public hall beautiful, so that all our local people (and more) really want to be part of the fun there, and use the building a lot more. As well as the new toilet block and designs already in place, we feel there need to be modern facilities (great Wi-Fi, sound and lighting systems, etc) and the hall needs to be magnificent again (Gail is particularly keen on chandeliers in the main hall) There needs to be a proper bar to encourage more events there, with much better catering facilities to allow full dining to take place. All the different rooms need to be smartened up, cables hidden, and colour schemes chosen. We need the reception into the hall to be friendly, open, warm and welcoming. The voice activated door is hardly that at the moment! As with Avonmouth community centre, we would like to help FOSL, and the library staff to make the most of the library, and the services offered there to set them up as the best they possibly can be for the future We are lucky to have so many community groups using the hall, and want to encourage “more of the same”. Please do come and talk to Amanda about what you might do here.
We have the option of taking on a new 35-year lease, where we have more control, and are in discussion with John Boss from BCC to see how that might work, without us losing the benefits we currently enjoy. Watch this space. We need your help There are currently four trustees, and we have identified that we need help in the following areas, so if you (or somebody you know and can persuade) can help, then please get in touch 1 We need somebody that has some experience in fundraising. This isn’t to do the applications, but to guide us as to what needs to be done 2 We want to be a good employer, and somebody with HR skills would strengthen our board 3 We have already had a user group meeting, and are after a nomination from our lovely user groups to represent them all on the board 4 Somebody with great communication(marketing) skills would really help us to get the word out there. Once we have a magnificent Public Hall, then we want everyone to know and use it. Please get involved

The hall is for the benefit of everyone, and is much loved. We are going to do our very best over the next few years to make it as good as we can. Please do get involved, put forward your ideas, and let us know what you think. Amanda is the hall manager, and can be contacted on shirepubhall@yahoo.co.uk

The Building Lease Previous trustees have negotiated a wonderful lease with Bristol City Council, where they pay all the running cost bills. This lease, however, runs out in 2032, and as BCC have little resource, the poor hall is suffering from underinvestment. A recent condition report shows there are nearly £400k’s worth of repairs that are needed/wanted.

Equity Release Myth Busters Here is our guide to bust some of those myths about releasing equity and provide you with some facts:
With a lifetime mortgage, the most popular method of releasing equity from your home, you will not have to sell any part of it to anyone. The lender will release the funds once a charge is secured on your home, the same as a normal residential mortgage you may have had previously, and you are entitled to carry on living in your home for the rest of your life.
“I cannot leave an inheritance for my family” False
“I will leave a debt for my loved ones if I go ahead with equity release” - False
Equity release will reduce the value of your estate it will not prevent you from leaving an inheritance for your loved ones. You can even opt for a guaranteed percentage your home value to be left to your beneficiaries.
This is not the case. Equity release plans now come with a “no negative equity guarantee”. This means you or your estate will never be asked to repay more than the value of your property, even if the amount owed is greater. We will not recommend a plan to you that does not offer such protection.
“If I release equity from my home now I will not be able to move in future” - False Equity release lenders will allow you to move your loan from one property to another. However, it should be noted that there are certain instances when it may not be possible to transfer your loan from one home to the next. The lenders have strict property criteria so you will need to check with your lender to make sure your new home can act as acceptable security. “I will have to hand over my deeds and will not own my own home any-more” - False
“Equity release is not for everyone” - True Equity release may well not be the right option for you at this time, we understand that everyone is different. Our job is to make sure you know everything you need to, before making any decisions. Rest assured, if we do not think it is the right choice for you, we will say so. You can therefore make informed decisions.
A Lifetime Mortgage could help you in retirement We’ll provide the canvas... ...Paint the future you deserve Contact us for qualifed and impartial advice

Our typical advice fee would be £600. A lifetime mortgage may impact your entitlement to means tested benefits and the inheritance you may leave.

Bristol looking for its Young Heroes as nominations for popular annual Awards open A number of young winners from previous years, sponsors and supporters including actor Joe Sims and the Mayor of Bristol, Marvin Rees, gathered at City Hall to launch the Bristol Young Heroes Awards 2020. The launch event marks the beginning of a five week period in which school staff, youth workers, community groups and parents will be encouraged to nominate Bristol’s young people for one of the prestigious awards.
One of the previous winners attending today’s awards launch was Catherine Rowe from Bedminster, who won the Environmental Hero Award in 2019, aged 15. Catherine said: “The Bristol Young Heroes Award has had an absolutely massive effect on me as a person; it’s really helped to inspire me and given me the confidence to know that I can do great things. Since the awards, I’ve joined the city’s youth council and have had the opportunity to do some incredible work experience with GKN Aerospace.”
Nominations for the awards ended Friday 13th December. A panel of judges will then decide on the winners ahead of the awards ceremony, There are nine categories in which people can nominate young people, including for the first time this which takes place at We The Curious on Friday 1st May. year, a new category of ‘Team Hero’, which aims to recognise the work done by organisations or groups All nominees are then invited to attend the gala who go above and beyond to support Bristol’s young evening, accompanied by two guests. The Bristol Young Heroes Awards, which are now entering their seventh year, were originally set up by the Mayor of Bristol to help showcase and celebrate young people who have overcome adversity to achieve greatness or gone above and beyond to make a positive difference in their community. For the last three years, they have been run by Community of Purpose, a charitable organisation dedicated to raising the aspirations of young people across the city. Amy Kington, CEO of Community of Purpose, said: “There really are no words to describe the impact of the Bristol Young Heroes Awards. It’s been my absolute pleasure to be involved over the last three years and watch the genuine joy, confidence and aspiration radiate from young people who would otherwise not have been recognised. “These young people are a real credit to our city and fully deserve their time in the spotlight and the opportunities that come afterwards. Every year these awards get better and we are aiming for these to be the best ones yet, so make sure you get those nominations in!” Mayor of Bristol, Marvin Rees, said: “The young people that these awards recognise are an inspiration and a brilliant advertisement for the communities in our city. I urge everyone who knows any outstanding young people to nominate them and give them the chance to enjoy this celebration and well deserved recognition.”
Anyone with a connection to a young person can submit a nomination using the simple form at www.communityofpurpose.com. Tickets for the 2020 awards ceremony will go on sale to the public in February 2020 on Community of Purpose’s website.
