Mikes letter Welcome to April edition of Direct Local, As we hit the Easter Holidays!! the weather is seems like we may have to don our winter warmers before we have that BBQ. Easter also marks another relaxation on the lockdown rules as we are now allowed to meet out doors in groups of 6 or two families together. Then on the 12th April pubs and restaurants can reopen (outdoors) No need for a scotch egg either. I for one cannot wait to grab a cold one down the local pub and tuck in to some good old pub grub with my family once again. It looks like we may get a half decent summer to if we all were good boys and girls. Lets hope those riots in the cities stop soon and we get a peaceful return to protesting. Not that I agree with it as it breaks all the rules and the good work we have all done over the last few months. Anyway Happy Easter everyone.

5 positive changes you can make to your garden in 2021 What positive changes can you make for your garden in 2021? January often brings the desire for major lifestyle changes and self-improvements, and there's no reason why that shouldn't extend to the home and garden too. If you want to channel some positive energy into your gardening in 2021, the experts at The Greenhouse People have shared some key resolutions that will transform the way you garden… 1. Try your hand at upcycling Extend upcycling in the home to your garden. Upcycling, where being eco-conscious and creative go hand in hand, is ideal for reducing waste in your garden and reusing items that would originally head for landfill. Think about how you can use old pieces of furniture in the garden. ‘Bathroom and kitchen renovations mean old tubs and sinks are regularly get sent for scrap, but these large items can make striking statement pieces when filled with flowers and foliage,’ suggest The Greenhouse People. Disused wooden crates and pallets are ideal for plants. Try hanging them vertically, creating an eye-catching tiered structure for small plants. You could also place them horizontally on the floor and fill with soil to create a miniature vegetable patch. Additionally, old plastic sacks can be given a new purpose by lining hanging baskets of flowers.

6

2. Embrace vegan gardening Whether you're trying to eat less meat or moving to a plant-based diet, vegan principles can extend to gardening. Growing your own vegetables is a good start and it can save you money and cut your carbon footprint too. The good news: you don't need acres of land to grow your own. Portable containers, crates or pots are a great way to grow on any hard surface. Of course, if you have the space, a greenhouse can increase your yield of fresh fruit and veg all year round with zero air miles. But if you have a small garden, legumes (runner beans, broad beans, French beans and peas), squashes and pumpkins are a great option as they make use of vertical space. Meanwhile, salad leaves, herbs and tomatoes grow well in boxes on balconies and patios. A lean-to greenhouse is also a great space-saving option if you lack square metres. 3. Make your own compost Making your own compost is super easy and incredibly eco-friendly, and you’ll be left with a nutrient-rich compost that you can feed your garden with all year. Start building a heap from kitchen and green waste in a corner of your garden, and use a larger container with drainage if possible.

The Greenhouse People explain: ‘Layers is the ultimate way to get the most out of your compost: regularly add alternating layers of green (nitrogen-rich) materials like grass cuttings, weeds and uncooked vegetable peelings, and brown (carbon-rich) materials like leaves, wood chippings, shredded paper, cardboard, and sticks allows the compost to truly thrive.’ 4. Go plastic-free With more than 300 million tons of plastic being produced every year, the fight is on to reduce the impact of plastic on the environment. Plastic is often used in the garden and these items can take up to 450 years to biodegrade if they aren’t recycled.

When it comes to gardening tools, opt for metal, which should far outlast plastic rivals. 5. Save water ‘In dry spells, always prioritise water-use by which plants need it most,’ ‘Top of the list comes young plants, greenhouses, hanging baskets and window boxes. Teach self-reliance for older trees, lawns and hedges which can survive for longer periods.’ You should also consider buying a butt to collect rainwater to feed your plants and lawn. ‘If you clean your dishes in a washing-up bowl, tip it on the garden after you’re done – a little washing-up liquid won’t do any harm,’

The most effective way to reduce plastic in your garden is to simply stop buying it. More garden centres are offering biodegradable pots made using materials such as coir (from coconut husks), wood chips, rice husks and even seaweed. Terracotta also makes a great rustic alternative.

Your garden in April Spring should be well under way this month with daffodils in full flow, their bright flowers enough to cheer up any day. Blossom trees will be blooming and fresh growth will be appearing on plants everywhere. “April showers’ are common but don’t be deceived by sudden burst of rainfall – you may need to start watering plants more regularly on dry, bright and windy days. With longer days and stronger sunshine growing conditions are continually improving and the warmer weather will give us all the opportunity to get busy in our gardens. Sow hardy annuals Hardy annuals are plants that can be sown from seed in the open ground. Get them off to an early start by sowing in pots or modules. Modular trays are also handy for sowing summer bedding plants such as marigolds, lobelia and petunias. Label each seed tray and once they are growing put them outside when the weather is warm day and night.

10

Support climbers Climbing plants should be growing rapidly now, so will need ample support for new growth. Extend or replace trellis as necessary or add more wire to archers and tripods. New shoots will need to be gently encouraged sideways as they grow. This will send vital growth hormones doing the length of the shoot rather than just to the tip and so will encourage flowering all over the plant.

Plant of the month: Rhododendron The rest of the garden will also be growing well now, so if you have been putting off carrying out any major pruning then now is the time to bite the bullet and get it done. Trees, shrubs and hedges should be cut back now before birds begin to nest.

Care for your lawn The lawn will need regular mowing from now until autumn. Get some maintenance carried out to your lawn mower to ensure it stays in good running order – at the very least your mower blades should newly sharpened ready for regular use. Keep the edges of the lawn tidy after moving with a sharp pair of shears or a lawn edger. Don’t forget to give the lawn a spring feed after mowing if you haven’t got around to doing it yet. If a more drastic approach is needed to spruce up your lawn, sowing seeds for new lawns or over seeding dead patches can be carried out from midApril onwards.

Why should you plant them? Ancient Greek meaning “Rose tree’ the rhododendron family includes azaleas. These stunning shrubs flower in all sorts of vibrant colours and can help brighten those difficult dark spots in your garden. Rhododendrons are grown for their spectacular flowers usually borne in spring, although some – the deciduous rhododendron or azaleas have good autumn colour. How should you plant them? In the wild rhododendrons are woodland plants, so they prefer dappled sunshine and can manage well in shade. They like plenty of water however will not do well in boggy or badly draining soil, so drainage is key. Plant in autumn or spring and use ericaceous compost.

9 ways your car insurance could end up invalid without you realising

Insuring your car is always a bit of a minefield, but even if you're not driving your car at the moment you still need insurance or to prove that it is off the road. Despite it being illegal not to have insurance, Somerset traffic police officers regularly catch people who have no insurance. But, even if you have it, there are many ways that it could actually become invalid, and you might not find this out until it’s too late.

Where you park your car There is a difference in insurance premiums if you use off-street parking compared to parking on a street. If you tell your insurer that your car is parked off-street when it’s not, if it is broken into your claim would not be valid. Lying about what the car is used for Insurers will ask how you use your car whether it’s for social, social and commuting or business use. Not telling the whole truth about what your car is used for will leave you without car insurance.

Listing an older person as the main driver when it’s actually someone younger Often termed as ‘fronting’, insurance becomes invalid if someone lists themselves as the main driver on a car that belongs to a younger driver, who is named as the secondary driver, but in reality main driver of the car. Not only could this invalidate your insurance, but it could also land you with a substantial fine and six points on your license. Making a profit from charging people for lifts Making a profit from charging people for lifts could put your car insurance at risk. However, if you are just accepting petrol money, which does not result in any money as profit, then this is not considered illegal and will not change your insurance.

Modifying your car If you plan on modifying your car, contact your insurer beforehand so they can tell you how much your policy will increase. Modifying your car increases insurance policies for multiple reasons. Bodywork and non-standard engines are more expensive to replace and repair. In addition to this, some modifications can increase the risk of your car being a victim of theft.

New film launch - Bristol Remembers - and shared reflection on 18 March, 6pm. One year since England went into a national lockdown, Bristol takes a moment to remember, reflect and begin the healing process.

Bristol Remembers is a multi-agency campaign aimed at giving people a space to collectively reflect and remember those people and things we have lost throughout the pandemic, and begin to take the important steps to healing.

The film ‘Bristol Remembers’ will be launched online at 6pm, Thursday 18 March on www. wearebristol.co.uk

Alice Towle, Youth Mayor of Bristol said: “Being involved in this project has given me the opportunity to reflect and remember on all those things we as a city have lost over the last year, but also begin to look ahead at how we take those ever so important steps to healing. It’s also been so heartening to see people continue find the positives despite all the challenges they have faced. I look forward to seeing you all online on Thursday 18 March at 6pm.”

Additionally, an online book of testimonials will be launched where people can submit their own written memories of the people, opportunities, jobs and other important things that have been lost during the pandemic.

If you, or someone you know, would be willing to contribute a testimonial with your own personal reflection, please email wearebristol@bristol.gov.uk with the subject line: Bristol Remembers – Testimonial.

Vivienne Faull, Bishop of Bristol said: “It has been a year like no other for the city as with the country at large. We mourn those who have died during the pandemic and lament all that we have lost as the things we take for granted have been disrupted. It is clearly so important that we come together to remember. Please join with us at 6pm on 18 March in this collective moment as we look to rebuild, with hope for the future.”

A testimonial should be 150-200 words long, including a relevant photo, and can be about anything or anyone important to you that you have sadly lost throughout the pandemic. All testimonials will be handled sensitively and with the utmost care.

Frontline workers and artists, faith and city leaders have joined to share personal testimonials about important things that have been lost during the coronavirus pandemic, for a new film called ‘Bristol Remembers’.

Keeping party politics out of policing My name is John Smith, and I am running as your independent candidate for Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner. My independence, experience, and proven track record as Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner and the PCC’s Chief Executive in Avon & Somerset make me the best choice for your next Police and Crime Commissioner and, if I am elected, I will keep the party politics out of policing, answering only to you, not politicians in Westminster. It is my experience, not politics, that will help to keep Avon and Somerset safe, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic and as we all return to normal life. Having lived in the area for 20 years with my wife, three children and our dog, Evie, I have a deep understanding of the area and the issues people and businesses face. My priorities reflect my experience and the many conversations I have had with communities across this diverse area. They cover inner city crime issues as well as the concerns of people in more rural parts of the area.

18

If elected, my priorities to keep everyone safe would be: - Supporting the police to enforce COVID-19 regulations appropriately so we can get back to living normally as soon as possible - Tackling knife and drug crime, including County Lines - Catching burglars and reducing burglaries - Combatting anti-social behaviour - Championing Avon and Somerset to become the most inclusive police force in the country - Improving road safety - Preventing fraud and cyber crime - Addressing rural crime and supporting rural communities - Working in partnership to address business crime

After 9 years working for the current Police and Crime Commissioner and as Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner myself, I am proud that Avon and Somerset Police is currently ranked as one of the top five forces in the country and has achieved an ‘outstanding’ rating for efficiency. Despite central government cuts of 30 per cent over the last 10 years and having one of the biggest funding gaps in the country compared to other major city areas, we have also managed to ringfence, prioritise, and protect neighbourhood policing for local communities alongside developing specific teams dedicated to tackling rural crime and burglary. I am dedicated to protecting the safety of everyone in Avon and Somerset and if you give me your vote on 6th May, I will continue to make this my main priority. www.johnsmith4pcc.com Email: john@johnsmith4pcc.com Facebook: johnsmithforpcc Twitter: @johnsmith4pcc

CITY AND PORT OF BRISTOL BOWLING CLUB When is a Winter Bowling Break not a Winter Bowling Break? Answer ---- when it happens in October!! This very popular annual event that takes place in Torquay at the Toorak Hotel was planned for early March but, due to Covid 19 restrictions ---- the hotel was actually closed when bowlers should have been gathering to enjoy the six day break --- it has been re-scheduled for October and will be something to look forward to at the end of the outdoor season. The club is sorry to see some good and well established bowlers leave during the close season but equally pleased to see the arrival of some new or returning ones. Bob Morgan and Graham Neale are new members whilst Derek Jones has returned to the club after several years away. It is hoped that more new faces will appear once the season is able to start. To continue the story of Club Presidents --- when Jack Ashton completed his term of office in 1990 Bill Deakin who worked on the port at the CWS Mill took over and served until 1992. His daughters Peggy and Jenny and son in law Dave have bowled for the club for many years and the Novice Trophy bearing his name is competed for as part of the club competition programme to this day.

30

Bill Evans, who had no connection with the port --- he worked for the council, first in Gloucester and then in Bristol --- succeeded Bill Deakin and held office from 1993-2006. His son Laurence and daughter in law Dawn have been bowlers at the club for many years ---- Dawn still bowls and is currently Competition Secretary. When Bills long time in office ended John Brailey --- he worked at The Port as a painter --- took over and was President from 20072009. John was always a great supporter of the club and individuals within it. He would always be there to support City and Port players when they were competing in County Competitions. John’s interest in the club never waned and neither did his ability to make people laugh. He bowled for the club for many years including some of the very successful years in the men’s league. Roy Whitfield followed John and held office from 2010 to 2012. He was a regular, successful bowler and the Bowls Section representative on the Main Club Committee. Roy worked in the granary at The Port. There is a story that Roy returned home from skittles one night and told his wife Irene that she was now a member of the bowls club. At the time Ian Wilson was asking every department at The Port to form a team for the Monday and later Tuesday ( as well) night club league.

Irene had not bowled before --- Roy bought her some woods and they went together to practice. Irene became a very good bowler and was part of all that the ladies did well over many years. She maintains an interest today and is a regular, with daughter Sally and son in law John on the Winter Bowling Breaks ---- no longer bowling but still just as interested in the game and the club. David Hinksman followed Roy in 2013 and is still in office today. He has hosted Presidents Days since 2015 and carried out Presidential Duties on numerous occasions. A favourite one came on Monday July 25th 2016 when the club hosted a game between Gloucestershire and Somerset for the Small Cup. There is lots of formality in games like this including the formal handing over of the green for the afternoons play to the host county. Standing between Roy Walker of Gloucestershire and Lionel Slatter of Somerset was something of an honour but also the chance to compare chains of office. Shortly before this event Heather Champion --- then Secretary and long serving club member --- had bought, for the club a new gold Presidents Chain of Office --- replacing the original much less impressive one. So it was that the City and Port Presidential Chain stood out as quite special amongst the three chains on display --- quite a day all round and certainly one to remember. For further information about the club and how to join please call David Hinksman on 0117 9082713.
