Mikes letter Welcome to the final edition of 2020!!

What can I say normally we can’t wait for the Christmas celebrations to start for all of the right reason of course, booze, gifts and family gatherings. But this year I think we all just want the year to end. As it’s a year from hell for some local businesses and families that have lost loved ones due to coronavirus or other life threatening illnesses. As for which tiers we will all be put in on the 2rd December it’s a gamble really as the R rate seems to be going down slowly in all the local regions we may only end up tier 1 or 2. Let hope so as I do not think the hospitality sector can take may more blows. Especially if they have to close over the Christmas break. On a happier note It looks like we will get some family gathering in over the festive season as the Government have given us 5 days to meet up with family. So here we go then! I hope everyone has a very merry Christmas and a very happy new year and I will see you on the other side. Here’s to 2021...

Help save hedgehogs this winter

Everyone loves helping hedgehogs to prepare for their winter hibernation by putting food out in their garden. Cat food and water are ideal to help fatten hedgehogs up to the minimum 450g they need to be to have the best chance of surviving hibernation. However, this doesn’t guarantee their survival. If you spot a hedgehog out in very cold weather that you think might be underweight or have health problems, you can contact a local hedgehog rescue centre such as Wild Hogs for advice. However, please be aware that hedgehogs don’t always hibernate for the whole of winter, they can go in and out of hibernation depending on the weather. One of the most important factors that is currently limiting hedgehog numbers is suitable hibernation habitat. Hedgehogs need different types of nests and locations for nesting throughout the year, they have different nesting needs for daytime, breeding and hibernation. An absence of the right kind of leaves and an appropriate supporting structure is probably why hedgehogs are absent from large coniferous forests, bogs, heaths and moors. Leaf size is an important factor for hedgehogs making hibernation nests, with leaves like oak, beech, hornbeam and lime being ideal. As well as suitable leaf sizes, hedgehogs need a supporting structure for the nest. This is often under thorny or stinging undergrowth, especially brambles, where hedgehogs will be better protected against predators.

8

As gardens and parks become ‘tidier’ with fallen leaves and brambles being cleared away; suitable nesting habitat for hedgehogs is becoming rarer. The provision of hedgehog boxes by kind residents can help increase suitable nesting spaces, although natural is always best. If you do have a hedgehog box in your garden ensure you are providing suitable bedding, ideally the right size fallen leaves, and research has shown that homemade boxes are preferred by hedgehogs than shop bought ones. More natural nesting habitat for hedgehogs would be the best gift you could give to them. When you’re next in your garden, take a look around and see if you’re able to leave a ‘messy’ corner for hedgehogs and other wildlife. Perhaps a pile of fallen leaves, and some bramble or other bushes. Many gardens don’t have the types of trees hedgehogs prefer, so why not link your garden up to other spaces that might be more suitable? This might be other gardens, or a local park. If hedgehogs can move between gardens to find food and suitable nesting sites then they have the best chance of surviving and thriving in urban areas. Do you have any suitable access holes for hedgehogs? If not could you make some? They should be at least 13cm square or the size of a CD case. Please record any existing or new hedgehog holes here so we can create a picture of hedgehog highways across the county. This will help us better protect hedgehogs and their habitats.

GENERATION RENT TO BECOME GENERATION BUY

Most of us at some point had (or have) ambitions of owning are own home. It’s common knowledge that today first time buyers are finding it increasingly difficult to get onto the property ladder. This is arguably caused by several reasons, but most significantly due to the increasing gap between the average salary compared to the average house price. According to ‘ ThisIsMoney.co.uk’ over the space of a decade the average house price went up by £100,000 whereas the average salary only went up by £6,400. Taking into consideration that lenders will calculate your borrowing by around 4.5 x annual salary, this leaves a borrowing short fall of £71,200. With this in mind, Boris Johnson’s announcement last month has caused a combination of excitement and speculation around what help first time buyers are to expect in the future. Boris stated he wants to turn generation rent into generation buy. He has given us little more than this slogan to go on however, what we do know is that the existing ‘Help to Buy’ (HTB) scheme is due to come to an end.

10

There are some significant changes between now and March 2021 to bare in mind if you or someone you know is looking to utilise the scheme before it ends.

From March 2021 the HTB Scheme will only be available to first time buyers, this means those interested in HTB and are not first-time buyers will need to have their ‘Property Information Form’ submitted by the 15th December 2020. A new scheme will be available from April 2021 Those looking to use the new scheme must complete a new HTB application form to be eligible for the new HTB scheme the purchase price must be under £349,000 (for the South West of England). A ban on arguing or hugging this Christmas may happ A scientists have questioned whether arguing could be banned at Christmas in a bid to stop the spread of coronavirus and the Health Secretary has appeared to rule out hugging. A university professor said online: 'there will be a lot of guidance over what to do' when coronavirus lockdown rules are eased over Christmas. The Government are looking at how to easing lockdown rules for five days over the festive season. The advice from the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage) is that each day of relaxation of coronavirus rules at Christmas could need five days of tighter restrictions The professor said that good ventilation and distance will be recommended and also added: "I wonder if they will ban singing, or a rule against family rows at Christmas to prevent the spread of the disease." The chairman of the Winton Centre for risk and evidence communication (WCEC) at the University of Cambridge told BBC Radio’s 4 on the 20th November programme that he thought mixing at Christmas could lead to “tens of thousands” of more Covid cases, requiring an extra clampdown. “It is quite plausible that a few days of relaxing would lead to tens of thousands of more cases and that means extra deaths and measures needed to bring those under control,” “There is a big difference though because when (we’re told) we need to save lives, we don’t know whose lives we’re saving.

12

“If somebody though dies or is hospitalised after getting Covid at Christmas, you are going to know who they are and I think the potential regret in anticipation of that might make people really quite careful.” He also predicted that the number of people in hospital with coronavirus – 16,000 people at present – would this winter exceed the 17,000 peak reached in spring, adding: “This will be a real slog.” Health Secretary Matt Hancock has appeared to rule out hugging relatives and friends at Christmas, as he said there were “promising signs” the current lockdown in England is working. The Health Secretary said rules would still need to be in place over the festive period, with people observing social distancing as families come together. But he said it was the Government’s plan to allow people to meet up after what had been a “terrible year”. Mr Hancock said on a national radio station: ‘discussions with the devolved nations are continuing with the aim of reaching agreement on how people can celebrate the festive period”. He said there was a need to “respect the fact that we mustn’t spread the virus further but also respect the fact that Christmas is a special time where people get together, especially with their families”.

Your Garden In December

Most gardeners tend to think that everything the garden is dormant in December. While this does tend to be the case there are still crops, plants and wildlife to protect from any winter frosts. The lawn will need to be kept clear of any remaining leaves and patio containers will need raising to avoid them sitting in the wet. The beginning of the month, however, will probably be dedicated to decorating the Christmas tree. For many people this is an essential part of their festive traditions and there’s nothing quite like a real Christmas tree to decorate a room and fill the home with that nostalgic seasonal aroma...

Choosing a Christmas tree

Looking good this month.. Mahonia

Potted/pot Grown Trees

Most people buy cut Christmas trees, but it is possible to buy ‘potted’ or ‘pot grown’ trees. If you want to keep your tree after Christmas to pot on or plant in the garden always ask for a pot-grown tree. Potted Christmas trees have usually been grown in the ground and then dug up and potted with a few roots. They generally won’t last much longer than a well cared for cut tree, and usually won’t establish in the garden afterwards. Pot grown trees have been grown in the pot and so many are more likely to be successful for growing on from year to year.

MAMA BEAR’S CHILDREN SUPPORT CHILDREN IN NEED WITH LOCKDOWN-FRIENDLY FUN Children at Mama Bear’s Day Nursery and Pre-Schools across Bristol have had to get creative with their Children in Need fundraising efforts this year in order to abide by coronavirus rules.

“Every day was a dressing up day with a couple of crazy hair days thrown in as well. The nursery managers also organised a host of additional activities including arts and crafts, games and story time sessions.

Instead of the usual bake sales, raffles, teddy bear picnics and spare change collections, the tots have enjoyed pyjama days, crazy hair days, bear hunts and Pudsey crafts to mark the important cause.

“This charity has always been close to our hearts as it is all about helping children. We’re so pleased to have raised such a fantastic amount, especially under the circumstances of this year, and we hope it makes a small difference to those in need.”

And instead of donating cash parents and carers supported the charity via an online link raising over £1000.

Mama Bear’s offers high-quality, affordable care across the South West. Established in 2002 the group now includes 24 nursery settings in Bristol, Somerset and Devon which Tony Driffield, co-owner of the family-run are consistently rated by Ofsted as Good or Mama Bear’s group, said: “We are great supporters of Children in Need every year and Outstanding. each one of our nurseries took part in some activity to raise money for the charity, albeit in To donate visit https://www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/erica-cross2 a different way this year. CITY AND PORT OF BRISTOL BOWLING CLUB The game of bowls should always be enjoyed, sometimes challenging and occasionally, great fun. So it was on September 14th 2014 that bowlers were seen on the City and Port of Bristol Green in all sorts of attire --- none of it anything to do with dress code and all great fun. From a vicar to an Elf to Jimmy the Scottish Bowler to a court jester, Andy Pandy, a St.Trinians Schoolgirl, an Arab, a cowboy ---- The club received sad news at the beginning and many more ---- they all bowled and it was of November when it heard of the passing of John Brailey. a very happy and enjoyable afternoon. Fancy dress has featured at the club in years gone by ---- early Summer Tours saw last night’s of the week in fancy dress and it was very much a part of the week with everybody joining in even if it meant improvising somewhat on occasions. The green closed at the end of September following a season in which only a limited amount of bowling was possible, but almost twenty bowlers did bowl a wood and there was a pairs competition toward the end. Since the season ended the green keeper has set about his winter programme of work to maintain and further improve the playing surface for season 2021.

John was a prominent and well respected bowler at the club for many years. He was President from 2007 to 2009 and although he was not able to bowl in recent seasons his interest in bowling at the club never waned. He was seen on occasions sitting on a bench at the end of the green, drink in hand, talking to whoever was around and enjoying the bowling that is in progress. Shortly before passing away John and his wife Marion --also a bowler at the club for many years ---celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary and yes --- they did have a card from The Queen.

Looking forward --- it is hoped to hold the club AGM early in the New Year and for the Winter Bowling Break in March to go ahead Through the close season work will be carried as planned. Preparation for the 2021 season out to repair the changing facility at the green. is already in hand at club, county and National Levels. It is hoped that when the season This portacabin has been in place for five and a half years having replaced the wooden opens in April it will be possible to bowl building that stood for many years, serving as normally --- bowling with other clubs, running competitions and going on the Club Summer the Men’s Hut that eventually fell apart Tour --- all of which were not possible in 2020. Consideration is also being given to a replacement for the Ladies Hut which has served the club well for a great number of years but is now showing signs of its age.
