Mikes letter Welcome to February edition of Direct Local,
Well January was a rite off wasn’t in! Let’s hope this month brings better times for everyone. Especially for the parents that are juggling home schooling and full time jobs. But on a lighter note February does bring two of my favourite times of the year. Valentines Day and Pancake Day, both area good reasons to eat either chocolates or copious amounts of sweet pancakes-yum. Or if your a savory person a drizzle of lemon juice. However if you read our horoscopes and romance is not on the cards for you this year then thank god for Netflix or Disney+ is a good choice as there is literally tons of great shows to watch at the moment and nothing goes better with a binge worthy box set than a huge bag of popcorn and your favourite bottle of beer or wine on theses cold winters evenings. Anyway take care Bristol and let’s hope March is a better month for everyone!

Local air ambulance charity responded to an average of five call-outs a day in 2020 despite lockdowns Great Western Air Ambulance Charity (GWAAC) were called to around five patients a day on average across 2020, despite the COVID-19 pandemic causing national lockdowns and restrictions throughout much of the year. Their Critical Care Team were called to 1,726 patients in urgent need across Bristol, Bath and North East Somerset, North Somerset, Gloucestershire, South Gloucestershire, and surrounding areas. Fifty five percent of their call-outs were trauma-related, including over 300 road traffic collisions. However, the most common incident was people suffering life-threatening cardiac arrests - they responded to over 500 patients experiencing this medical emergency. The lifesaving crew were called out over 500 times in Bristol alone, making up 29% of their annual missions, and averaging almost ten patients a week in the city requiring urgent medical care before they reached hospital.
The majority of people think that the air ambulance is either fully or partially funded by the NHS and government. In fact, GWAAC receives no day-to-day funding from either the NHS or the Government, and relies on charitable donations to raise over £4 million a year to remain operational and continue saving local lives.
COVID-19 has put a stop to many of the charity’s usual fundraising activities, with eve nts and face-to-face meetings still unable to go ahead as they usually would. 2020 was a The local charity’s emergency response team difficult year for the charity and its crew, and consists of Critical Care Doctors and with the pandemic still ongoing ten months Specialist Paramedics who bring the skills and later, 2021 looks to be even more challenging expertise of a hospital emergency department with the charity seeking out other ways of to critically ill or injured patients, when their reaching its fundraising needs. skills can make the difference between life and death. Your Garden In February If you’re a keen gardener February is a month filled with anticipation. The first signs of life are beginning to emerge as plants shake off their winter dormancy and wildlife begins to wake. Light levels are increasing, temperatures are rising and splashes of colour are beginning to creep back into the garden. Spring is on its way and there is plenty of preparation to do.
Plant shrubs and trees February is the ideal time to plant new shrubs and trees while they are still in their dormant state. Make sure the ground is not frozen or water logged before planting. Stakes and rabbit guards should be put in place at the time of planting to prevent damage to the root ball or bark. It’s also a good idea to check ties and stakes on existing plants and replace, tighten or slacken where necessary. Plant of the month: Camellias Why should you plant them? Welcome in the spring with Camellias-these hardy shrubs have glossy evergreen leaves and display flowers that brighten up your winter. An early riser in terms of plants waking up from the winter snooze. Camellias burst into flower in February just as the rest of the garden is starting to blink its eyes at the sunshine. How should you plant them? Camellias are easy to grow and flower relliably-the most important thing is choosing the right spot. Although a hardy shrub their flower buds are susceptible to frost once they start to develop so plant in a sheltered spot and wrap with fleece when frost is forecast.
3 Essential gardening jobs for February Prune plants Prune late flowering shrubs such as fuchsia, hydrangea, buddleja and ceanothus. Using sharp secateurs, cut just above an outward pointing bud. Aim to remove about a third of the height of the shrub and try to maintain an even shape. Check other shrubs and remove any dead, diseased or damaged branches to keep the plant healthy. Try to avoid pruning early flowering shrubs until after they have flowered. Give the lawn a light mow If the weather is warm you may need to start mowing. Set the cutting height on your mower to its maximum and only mow when it’s dry. Re-cutting lawn edges will also give an instant lift to the appearance of the garden.
10
Camellias like to grow in acidic soil so need planting with ericaceous compost. feed with ericaceous plant food to keep the leaves glossy and green and water well once the flower buds appear-although the flowers wont break until February. The buds will begin to develop in autumn.

Bristol’s fight against food poverty Thousands of emergency food parcels are being delivered by a network of council, voluntary and community organisations so no one in Bristol goes hungry during the coronavirus pandemic. Bristol City Council is thanking those who have stepped up to help as the pressure on households to feed their families increases. In the past two weeks alone, the council and partners have tripled referrals to foodbanks for residents struggling to make ends meet, and four new emergency foodbanks have opened in Knowle West, Redcliffe, Bedminster and Hillfields to add to the city-wide network already in place. Similarly, the FOOD club network is growing from five clubs to 16, all supporting 50 families each.
The council works closely with Feeding Bristol, the charity formed in 2017 with a mission to see no one in the city go hungry. Feeding Bristol is an umbrella organisation coordinating and supporting the network of community and voluntary groups providing food to those in need. Andy Street, Feeding Bristol Chair, said: “The Covid-19 pandemic has tested Bristol’s food resilience, and we should celebrate how we have very quickly met the demand. Alongside key partner FareShare South West, we are bringing a huge amount of food into the city supplying about 100 projects, and that number is growing by the day.
“It is inevitable that demand will increase as thousands face economic difficulties. We need to support people from all walks of life; Pop-up food distributors run by closed pubs this is a testing time for many people and not and restaurants, and volunteers from just those who are typically vulnerable to food businesses and community organisations, are poverty.” all adding to Bristol’s food response. Marvin Rees, Mayor of Bristol, said: “The way people have stepped up to support their friends, communities and even neighbours they have never met is incredibly humbling. The response has been exceptional, but we cannot rest on our laurels. “Thousands of people are facing food poverty, demand has never been higher, and the situation will only get worse as the repercussions of furlough, redundancy and increased applications for Universal Credit take its toll. We are planning for this now, but as a city we must pull together. In the coming months we will need more volunteers, more donations and more emergency provision.”

Free school meals – schools are either using a voucher system or have their own system in place to provide food for children eligible for free school meals due to financial circumstances. We are planning now for summer holiday provision. Food banks – there is a network of food banks in the city, including four new emergency food banks. People in crisis can be referred to food banks via the council and a number of other organisations. There are seven food banks in Bristol, with related outlets distributed across the city.
Food clubs – these are based largely at children’s centres providing meals to families. There are currently 16 operating in Bristol. Community groups and projects – including charities and faith groups, often focused on supporting a specific group of people, e.g. Easton Community Centre has been set up as a temporary foodbank to support food parcels to the 50 ROMA families in the area. Knowle West Alliance has partnered with Severn Vineyard church to set up an emergency Foodbank in Filwood. Black South West Network is coordinating work with some eight community projects in the city centre focused on providing emergency food for the BAME communities. Pop-up food distributors – caterers, cafes, restaurants and pubs which are currently closed are helping in various ways, either providing food parcels or cooking meals for distribution across the city. For example, a new venture led by Michelin Star chef Josh Eggleton called The Food Union providing food parcels for a number of vulnerable groups across the city, and quality meals for key workers (NHS, care workers, etc).
Fosters Event Catering providing over 300 meals per day for NHS workers. And The Plough in Easton is delivering fruit and veg boxes to vulnerable groups. What do I do if I can’t afford or get food? Please call the We Are Bristol support hotline on 0800 694 0184 open 8.30am5pm, Monday to Friday and 10am - 2pm Saturday, Sunday and bank holidays. How can I help? We are matching volunteers up with people who need support, so please register on Can Do Bristol. Alternatively there are lots of networks of volunteers in community groups, and being organised in local areas on Facebook. If you have food you want to donate, or are a business/community group that could support, please email: coronavirus@bristol. gov.uk You can donate money and food donations to individual Food Banks.

2,820 traffic offences and speeds of up to 154 mph detected in Avon and Somerset during National Road Safety Week Avon and Somerset Police have dealt with over 2,820 road traffic offences during Road Safety Week16th - 23rd November 202o. The week, when England was in lockdown 2.0, saw mostly wet roads, often with reduced or poor visibility and conditions which should naturally slow traffic down. Despite this, offences included a motorist driving at 154 mph on an A-road in poor weather, another travelling at 101 mph in fog and one person driving at 80 miles per hour with their hands behind their head. All of these motorists will now be summonsed to court. Road Safety Week, organised by road safety charity ‘BRAKE’, is an annual event and the biggest road safety awareness event in the UK. This year, the campaign message is “No Need To Speed”.
Chief Inspector Jason Shears of Avon and Somerset Police said: “Speeding on any road is unacceptable – it is a serious, dangerous and anti-social offence that causes death and injury to thousands of people each year. Some people don’t take the risk of speeding seriously, but our patrols do. We will continue to target those who choose to put others at risk and work all year round to educate on safe driving and the consequences of not doing so. “We always have our communities’ safety at heart and we thank the public who are increasingly assisting us by uploading Dashcam footage and reporting to our website. This enables us to bring more offenders to justice, helping keep our roads safer for everyone.”
Speed is one of the ‘Fatal Five’ offences dealt with by police. Others include careless driving, drink and drug driving, not wearing a seat-belt and driver distractions which could include using a mobile phone, listening to music or reading a map. Motorists who commit one of the ‘Fatal Five’ are far more likely to be involved in a fatal collision. Inappropriate speed is linked to 75 per cent of fatal collisions. It applies not only when the speed limit is exceeded but when the speed travelled is inappropriate for the conditions – including weather, traffic flow, pedestrians or hazards. “Sadly, speed continues to be an issue both in our communities and on our motorways. Our Speed Enforcement Units (SEUs) are out every week and we work with our Community Speed Watch volunteers, Special Constables and other partners whenever possible, to detect the drivers who put others at risk.
16
Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens added: “During my eight and a half years as PCC, local people have always stressed how concerned they are about road safety, especially regarding speeding. Let’s be clear, speeding is never acceptable but, as proven by the offences from just one single week, a small group of people are ignoring the rules and putting themselves and others at risk. “We all know what the speed limits are on certain roads and in certain areas, and there really is no reason to ignore such limits that keep you safe. Please take care and respect speed limits at all times.” The outcomes of Road Safety Week come as Avon and Somerset Police take part in Op Tonic, a nationwide operation targeting motorists who choose to drink/drug drive.

From turning on the lights from your phone to asking Alexa to make you a pot of coffee, here are the 10 smart home devices you need during the lockdown. 1. A set of Tile trackers so you don’t lose your stuff
From setting reminders to turning on the lights, there’s not much an Amazon Echo Dot speaker can’t do. It’s ideal for living in quarantine since you can use it to control your home, make calls to friends and family, entertain your kids, catch up on podcasts, and more. Spending more time at home doesn’t make you less prone to misplacing your stuff, which is why you need an easy way to keep track of it all. Tile trackers come in all shapes and sizes, connect via Bluetooth, and can be stuck to remotes, hung on a set of keys, tucked inside of your wallet, and more.
3. A smart plug to control your home
When an item goes missing, open the Tile app on your smartphone or tablet to play a loud tone on the Tile that’s attached to your missing time. Follow the sound and voilà—in a matter of seconds you’ve located your remote that’s been lodged in the couch for days. Tile also syncs with Amazon Alexa, so you can say “Alexa, ask Tile to find my keys.” You can also use Tile to find your lost phone. For example, if you misplace your phone inside of your home (hey, it happens to the best of us), you can click any of your Tile trackers to play a tone on your phone. We recommend the Tile Essentials Kit to keep track of a variety of knick-knacks in your home. The Essentials Kit comes with one slim wallet insert, two Tile Stickers that adhere well to remotes, and one Tile Mate that can be attached to a set of keys.

Now that you’re likely spending more time at home, you can make your days run easier with the help of a smart plug. A smart plug turns your everyday electronics (think TVs, lamps, and speakers) into devices that can be controlled from your phone, or with the help of Alexa and Google Assistant.
in lockdown easier... 4. A Facebook Portal so you can make interactive video calls
5. Our favourite affordable smart robot vacuum to help you clean less As you spend more time indoors, you’ve probably noticed that you’re cleaning more than you were pre-pandemic (especially if you’ve got kids around). If the constant cleaning is bringing you down, let a smart robot vacuum do the work for you. The Eufy BoostIQ RoboVac 30C is an a ffordable, easy-to-use smart robot vacuum that includes two magnetic boundary strips that can be used to keep it from wandering off into sensitive areas.
Since the coronavirus pandemic began, you’ve probably spent a lot of time video chatting with friends and family. However, a dedicated video-chatting device like the 10-inch Facebook Portal makes quarantine makes video calls so much better with augmented reality effects, good sound, and even better video quality. The person you’re calling will need to have WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger installed on their smartphone or tablet, or use Facebook Portal to answer your call.
From the app, you can dictate cleaning schedules, initial cleanings, and check on the battery status. If you don’t have your phone on you, the 30C can also be controlled via Amazon Alexa or Google Home Assistant by saying, “OK Google, ask RoboVac (robot name) to start cleaning” or “Alexa, ask RoboVac (robot name) to stop cleaning.”

WARNING OVER SCAM TARGETING DRIVERS The DVLA has issues a fresh warning over scams targeting drivers. The body responsible for car tax and vehicle licensing has warned drivers to be on the lookout for new phishing scams this new year. Phishing scams dupe innocent victims into handing over personal details such as bank information, often by sending messages claiming to be from a legitimate company or organisation. The DVLA has recently released images of the type of scam messages purporting to be from it and trying to fool drivers into handing over personal data or making payments to the fraudsters. Criminals use email and text messages to pose as the DVLA and divert victims to fraudulent websites to enter their personal and bank details. The messages usually claim either that a driver has overpaid their car tax and is due a refund or that there has been a problem with a tax payment and they need to log into the fake website to update their information. The DVLA has also reported seeing scam messages that claim there is a problem with their licence information. Handing over data like this can help criminals committing identity fraud. Last year there was a massive rise in the number of drivers reporting suspected fraud to the DVLA. In the three months to September 2020, the agency saw a 603 per cent increase in reported cases compared with the same period a year earlier.
28
Phil Morgan, head of fraud policy investigation at DVLA, said: “These recent scams may at first seem legitimate, however they are designed to trick motorists into providing their personal details. We never ask for bank or credit card details via text message or email, so if you receive something like this, it’s a scam.” What to do if you’ve been targeted by a phishing scam Anyone who has received a suspicious email is being urged to report to the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) via their suspicious email service: report@phishing.gov.uk. Suspicious texts can also be forwarded free of charge to your network provider on 7726. You can also report it to Action Fraud or police if you think you have fallen victim to such a scam. DVLA has issued 5 top tips for motorists to stay safe online: • • • • •
Never share driving licence images and vehicle documents online Never share bank details or personal data online Avoid websites offering to connect to DVLA’s contact centre Only use GOV.UK when looking for DVLA contact details Immediately report it to the police via Action Fraud if you think you have been the victim of a scam

CITY AND PORT OF BRISTOL BOWLING CLUB
The City and Port of Bristol Bowling Club is one of sixty clubs affiliated to the Gloucestershire Bowls Association. Divided into four sections, largely for administrative and competition purposes --- City and Port are in the Bristol Section, the other sections being Gloucester, Cheltenham and Stroud. Individual competitions are run initially within sections before going across sections, then regional and ultimately national, with finals played at Leamington Spa.
City and Port provided a two course meal for the two county sides and were thanked by the respective Presidents --- Roy Walker and Lionel Slatter in speeches which are traditional at the end of County Games. Afternoons such as this come along very rarely. It was great to see so many bowlers on the green --- all six rinks being played on and there was some very good and competitive bowling to be seen in the course of 21 ends play.
Each season the county plays games against other counties. Individual players from affiliated clubs can put their name forward for selection and clubs can ask for a game to be played on their green. In 2016 City and Port asked for a game and were given the honour of hosting one between Gloucestershire and Somerset. Competing for the Small Cup --- nothing to do with size ---- it took place on Monday 25th July --- a six rink game in glorious sunshine. Games played at county level are full of ceremony and formality. Before play commenced the host President David Hinksman handed the green over to the home President Roy Walker --- it was his for the duration of the game. At the end of the game it was handed back with rather less ceremony. This was the 60th time that the Small Cup had been played for ---- the first time was at Henleaze in 1957. A very good afternoons bowling ended in victory for Somerset 129 109 to bring them within two wins of Gloucestershire in terms of games played over the years. When the last wood had come to rest it was time to head for the ballroom and the bar ---bowling is thirsty work on a hot afternoon.
Bowling is a unique sport --- anyone can play it and it can be played in so many ways. The county game was a good example of serious competitive bowling. Contrast that with the Fancy Dress, fun afternoon that took place in September 2014. Somewhere in the middle is the club mixed friendly that is seen at week – ends and on Wednesday afternoons throughout the normal season. Friendly games are purely for pleasure but --- both sides want to win so there is always a small element of competition. If you would like to know more about bowling, the club or how to become a part of it please call David Hinksman on 0117 9082713. Why not do something different in 2021? The City and Port Club offers free trial sessions, free coaching for members, a free club shirt for all full membership fee new members and there is no joining fee --- just annual subscription --- it’s no longer necessary to be a member of the main social club --- just the Bowling Club fee. This is probably the least expensive club to join in the area so --- why not give it a try?
