Grim Future For Shire Public hall and Library What is going on? Because of severe financial cuts by Bristol city Council the Public Hall will lose 25% of its annual income this year. The library service across Bristol faces major cuts, and it is inevitable that some libraries will lose all their funding. It is possible that Shirehampton Library could be in that position. (An announcement on the council budget is expected in February) The trustees of Shirehampton Public Hall Community Association are considering a range of options for the future of the hall and also including the possibility of the library becoming a community library managed by the hall and local volunteers. The proposals under discussion include

To showcase what the hall and the library already do and to give Shirehampton residents the opportunity to influence what happens in the future. Do you want the hall to decline and the library to close? This is your chance to make a difference. Come and see what is on offer, take part in our survey and have some fun too.

1. Coasting along as we are, losing money and facing possible closure of the library. 2.Take on the running of the library with modest improvement of some rooms currently used by the library to increase space available for letting. 3. Raise funds for a major investment in upgrading the facilities at the hall and keep the library open with enhanced activities such as a cafĂŠ. We are having an Open Day on Saturday 25th February 10am to 4pm .

The Public Hall has many events and regular activities, so please visit our website at: www.shirepubhall.org.uk for further details. Also check out our noticeboard. You can always email us at bookings@shirepubhall.org.uk or telephone: 0117 9829963.

Writing a will probably isn’t top of anyone’s list of New Year’s Resolutions – who wants to start 2017 with such a grim project? Indeed, according to a 2011 poll in the US, 60% of Americans would rather undergo root canal treatment, do their taxes or abstain from sex for a month than set down their final wishes. However, a US psychologist has suggested that we’re all lying to ourselves by procrastinating over writing our wills; instead, sitting down and planning our estates could empower us... Considering death is one of the few certainties of life, why do so many of us put off writing a will? Apparently, it’s all to do with the very human instinct to deceive ourselves. In doing so, we avoid uncomfortable realities – a coping mechanism that Dr. Cortney S. Warren, a psychologist at the University of Nevada, covers in her book Lies We Tell Ourselves: The Psychology of Self-Deception. “Humans are masters of self-deception,’ Dr Warren writes. ‘We don’t like to think of ourselves as liars; it hurts us too much to admit. So, we lie to ourselves about that, too.

As a clinical psychologist, I am frequently confronted with the fact that we all lie to ourselves. I believe that it is our biggest obstacle to living a fulfilling life.” According to Warren, avoiding writing a will is a good example of us lying to ourselves. By the very act of writing one, we are acknowledging something we find very difficult to face; our own mortality. In an article for Psychology Today however, Warren does highlight the feeling of empowerment which writing a will provides us with. “The main reason to write a will is to give yourself a voice,” she says. “It is actually a wonderful gift to those you love to have a will in place so that they can celebrate your life after you die—not become engrossed in legal battles over your stuff. Maybe it’s time to rethink your New Year’s Resolutions list for 2017 – and add writing a will to the top of it. To stick to resolutions, psychologists advise breaking goals into small steps. Take the first one today by speaking to your local will writing experts at Legally Secure Ltd, where the cost of writing a will starts at as little as £135. For more information, and to start 2017 with a little of the self-empowerment which writing a will can bring, call Legally Secure on 0117 322 6322 or email info@legallysecure.co.uk.

Property Costs in Bristol Are Rising Faster than London Well, what we all suspected and a regular topic of conversation in pubs and coffee bars across the city from Hengrove to Henbury, Avonmouth to Brislington has been confirmed, property in Bristol is rising faster than any city in the UK. In 2016, the average rise in Bristol across the board according to Hometrack was 9.6%; in London, yes the mighty metropolis, 7.3%. That is big money. It affects all sections of the city, except the very rich. Those of us who have property and are getting along may feel a warm glow that our house, or in my case flat, certainly isn’t losing money and indeed is an increasingly valuable asset. But what are families who are not so well off to do? What about our young people in the city? Are they to be forced into the cheaper areas and worst housing?

He is encouraging developers to start building and to stop land –banking, holding sites empty. The City Council has started building council houses again and is supporting Housing Associations to build by freeing up land. This is bound to be controversial in some locations like the edge of Hengrove Park, but I would appeal to those comfortably housed to think of those trying to set up home. Other helpful solutions are for “empty nesters” to downsize; as your house or garden becomes too big to manage, free it up for a family. I can personally recommend it, having done so a few years ago and never looked back. It freed up so much of my time to do other things I enjoy and money as my flat is easier to run and better insulated – I do appreciate paying less to greedy fuel companies! Modern system –built ‘prefabs’ are well insulated, quick to put up and are fairly common in Europe. The old post-war prefab estates were very popular, with people objecting to them being demolished, despite their faults. They could be another answer to this problem. Whatever we do, it is good that this is the City Council’s priority; our citizens must have a decent place to live. Article by Eileen means

Since the Council elections last May, increasing the range of and supply of accommodation has been Mayor Marvin Rees’s top priority.

And now it’s February! Well, it’s hard to believe that Christmas was over a month ago as I write! It was lovely to see so many of you at our special Advent and Christmas services at St Mary’s and we hope you enjoyed being part of them. If there is any feedback you would like to give us then do, please, email the church office on stmarysshirehampton@2day.ws or revhelenjohnson@btinternet.com. We are always pleased to hear your thoughts and ideas. And now it’s February! The time in the church when we will be leading up to Lent. Lent is the period of six weeks, 40 days, (not including Sundays) leading up to Easter, the most important festival in the Christian calendar. It starts on Ash Wednesday and he last week of Lent is called Holy Week. During the 40 days of Lent, we remember the time when Jesus went into the desert to fast and pray before beginning his work for God.

During the 40 days of Lent, we remember the time when Jesus went into the desert to fast and pray before beginning his work for God. Lent, traditionally, was a time of giving things up. People in more recent times would give up something they really enjoyed such as cakes or chocolate and maybe give the money they saved to a favourite charity. Some people try to take on something new in their Christian life instead. The day before Lent starts is known as Shrove Tuesday, which we all know as Pancake Day. This day was traditionally the last chance to use up the fatty and rich foods Christians would not be eating during Lent and so the tradition of pancakes was born – an idea over 1000 years old! In total, Brits use an unbelievable 52 million eggs on Pancake Day. That’s 22 million more than any other day! And, it isn’t just us - William Shakespeare was a pancake lover! It is reflected in many of his plays. We continue the tradition in St Mary’s by having a Pancake Party during the school holidays which is always great fun. This year it’s on Tuesday 14th February between 10am and 12noon. There will be pancake races in the church yard for adults and children (weather permitting), quizzes and colouring competitions and prizes to be won. And, of course, we offer pancakes with your coffee. You are warmly welcome along that morning. We also have pancakes on offer with coffee on Shrove Tuesday which is Tuesday 28th February. Messy Church for February is on the 16th and the theme is Joseph. A lovely time for children and families – refreshments, story and crafts. There is no charge for this. Come along and give it a try! Remember the church is here for you – come in for a coffee, a place to think and pray, to light a candle, for companionship or to one of our many services and events. We look forward to seeing you. Blessings Rev Helen

Study At Ashton Gate In September Bristol City Community Trust is giving post-16 students the chance to enrol on to one of six education courses ahead of the 2017/18 academic year. Through its continual growth in strength and capacity, the Trust now has the appropriate sport structure to enable learners to develop life skills, maximise career choices and opportunities through carefully designed qualifications, no matter what their academic or practical level. Such a structure sees the Trust attract and accept a variety of students on to any of the following exciting courses, which range from post-16 college to degree level: - Level 2 Diploma in Football in Community Settings - Boys BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport (Futsal Pathway) - Girls BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport (Futsal Pathway) - LTA BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport (Tennis) - Foundation Degree in Community Football Coaching and Development - BA (Hons) Sports Business and Entrepreneurship

You already have noticed, no doubt that the evenings are lighter. And although the weather is quite cold, it is reassuring to know that spring is on her way. The 1st to 2nd February is sometimes referred to as Brigid's day, and the other name for it is Imbo and this is the time of year when it is the celebration of the Hearth and Home.

50% Off in February

50% Off in February

Part of the celebration of Bridget is to honour your living space, and this is where the good old fashioned broom came into play, as all the negativity and general cleaning up of dust was done to honour her, and to bring in bright new energy into your home. This is where spring-cleaning most probably came from, as so many of these things we do today often have their roots within our past history. Brigid was recognised as a spring goddess, who often is seen to be holding a flame, and it is often said that she is by sacred Wells. As well as for the home, she is the representation of the young maiden, as in the new life that will be brought within the spring. Also during this month of course, is St Valentine's Day on February 14.With many blessings for good fortune and well-being in this coming year, peace and light to all, Marie..

City and Port of Bristol Bowls Club News The new outdoor bowling season may still be three months away but there is plenty going on at the City and Port of Bristol Bowling Club. Work on the green has continued through the winter months and greenkeeper John Swift has been seen on a number of occasions working the magic to create the best possible playing surface when woods start to roll again in April. Sunday January 8th saw more than thirty bowlers, family and friends gather in the skittle alley at the City and Port of Bristol Club for an evening of bingo, putting, table skittles and skittles. With cash prizes for bingo and bottles of wine for winners of the other games it was a very full and enjoyable evening. Dave Povey was victorious at Table Skittles, Ken Davies at skittles and, after a play-off Graham Neale came out on top in the putting. The February event will be a quiz ---- devised and presented by Gordon Dimond.

The green at the City and Port of Bristol Club took some time to construct and was ready for play in 1974. Once open it provided bowlers from the port with a bowling home of their own --- no longer sharing with the Avonmouth Club.

When greens close for the winter, bowling goes indoors at the City and County Arena. On Saturday February 4th the City and Port will take on Severnvale and for the final indoor game this winter the opponents will be another local club side ---- on Saturday March 4th.These games are very enjoyable and provide the chance for predominantly outdoor bowlers to try their hand playing on a very different surface.

From that point the club moved forward with Ian Wilson setting up the inter-departmental league and in 1980 the first Lady Members ---- Ivy Gingell and Angela Simmons joined. By 1982 the ladies were playing league bowls with Irene Whitfield as Captain, Shirley Parker, Secretary, Pat Warren and Irene Jenkins, Selectors. At this point in the clubs history there were about 140 members and it was not easy to get a game at the week-end.

The Pre-Season Meeting will be on Thursday March 16th at 7.45 in the Ballroom at the City and Port of Bristol Club. Barely a month after that the new season is underway with a visit to the all-weather green at Wrington on Wednesday April 12th.

There was however something you could do to improve your chances ---- volunteer to do teas for the coming week- end ---- and usually play the week-end after!! Ron Jones was a cranedriver at the port and bowled on the new green from its early days. He continued to bowl successfully on it and many other greens for a great many years but eventually retired from the outdoor game and bowled exclusively indoors in late years ---- still enjoying the game as he had done for a very long time. Sadly Ron passed away in November but he, and his wife Pat who continues to enjoy bowling indoors, will long be remembered simply as Pat and Ron, Shirehampton by many people in the bowling community. Valerie Gosling who came to City and Port from Bristol Arrow passed away in December. Val enjoyed her years bowling for The Port but became ill prior to the 2016 season and sadly could not continue bowling.

For further information about the Bowling Club and its activities please call David Hinksman on 0117 9082713.

Leasing Or Buying A Car? If you want to buy a car and don't have enough money, you can opt for financing a car for personal needs, purchase loans or leasing. Leases and purchase loans are the most common methods of automobile financing. Leasing vs Buying a Car- what's the right solution for your needs? Leasing is one of the most used forms of financing, being affordable for most individuals who want to pay for only a portion of a vehicle's cost. Leasing operation is an alternative to bank credit, for proper purchase of cars, machines or buildings. The leasing company provides the right of using the car to an individual or company, for a certain period of time. The first payment must be made at the time when signing the contract -- for the month ahead. At the end of the lease, the client may buy the car or extend the leasing contract. The car can be bought either at the end of the lease, or after 12 months from the beginning of the contract. Lease payments involve a depreciation charge and a finance charge.

The leasing company will ensure the car, but insurance costs will be supported by the user. The monthly rates can be reduced by paying the residual value (20% of the car value) at the time when the contract ends. The initial commission is applied to the total value of the car. Early repayment can be made at least 12 months after signing leasing contract. Traveling outside the country by car requires the consent of the leasing company. Buying a car involves the purchase of a vehicle, paying for the entire cost of the vehicle. The client must make a down payment, being also responsible for paying an interest rate, based on his credit history and sales taxes in cash. The first payment must be made a month after signing the contract. Loan payments consist in a principal charge and a finance charge. Buying a car builds equity, while leasing doesn't. In case if buying a car the monthly payments are higher. You are also responsible for unexpected cost of repairs after warranty has expired.

Honda Civic Type R wins What Car Reader Award The British built next-generation Honda Civic Type R has won the coveted What Car? reader award and has been named as the most eagerly anticipated car launch of 2017. Demonstrating its huge popularity, the Civic Type R took almost half of the votes and clinched the top spot in the poll compiled by What Car? experts and voted for by the readers. First unveiled as a surprise entry prototype at the Paris Motor Show at the end of September last year, the mass production version of the next generation Civic Type R is expected to be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March. Made in Swindon, the next generation Civic Type R is set to go on sale in the latter half of this year and comes hot on the heels of the current car, which is expected to fast become a modern classic with only 2,500 on UK roads. Held in association with Warranty Direct and widely acknowledged as the ‘Oscars’ of the car industry, the annual What Car? Car of the Year Awards are only given to the cars that set the highest standards in their class each year. These awards are highly important for both car makers and customers because of the authority and integrity of the What Car? brand.

Dave Hodgetts, managing director of Honda UK, commented: “Kicking off the year with a win at the most prestigious automotive awards ceremony is a fantastic achievement; something which is even more rewarding as it was voted for by the readers. “That in itself has a deeper significance as it clearly demonstrates the connection, belief and trust we have with our customers. 2017 is going to be another big year for Honda in the UK as we not only launch the new Civic Type R but also the 10th generation Civic and celebrate 25 years of Type R.” Steve Huntingford, editor at What Car? added: “The Type R’s low-slung shape, large rear spoiler and triple exhausts have clearly captured the minds of What Car? readers, because this is the model they have voted as the most anticipated new car of 2017.” “The Civic Type R will shake things up in the hot hatch market as Honda is sticking with front-wheel drive and aiming to set the new benchmark for this type of car. Advantages and disadvantages of LED Lighting No doubt, LED lights are the most popular type of lighting nowadays. Due to LED lights the common incandescent bulbs become very rare. Like all things of the universe LED lights have some advantages and also have some disadvantages. In this article I’m going to discuss both those advantages and disadvantages of LED lights and I hope this article will help you to make the decision whether LED lights are right for you or not. At first, let us take a look on the advantages of LED Lights: The biggest advantage of LED lights is that they are very energy efficient. Unlike common incandescent bulbs that waste more than 75% of the electrical current by heating up the filament of metal, LED lights would not generate any kind of heat and due to this they consume very low energy to produce light. The second biggest advantage of LED lights is that they are 100% green, safe and clean. LED not contains mercury or any kind of hazardous materials. Mercury is a very dangerous substance and obviously no one wants to release it in their home for their children. Furthermore, all the LED lights are green and friendly to the environment so there is no problem disposing of them. Most of the incandescent bulbs are pink in colour and they will not offer so many colours. So, there is not too much you can have to change the colour of the light when using incandescent bulbs. But when it comes to the LED lights, then you have a lot of options of colours. So, if you like colourful lights then LED lights are the better option for you. Another advantage of LED lights is that they really look very cool. Unlike common incandescent bulbs you can use LED lights where you want for example, in Christmas trees, lawns, drawing rooms, living rooms etc.

Disadvantages of LED Lights: The most prominent disadvantage of LED light is its cost. LED lights are very expensive compared with the traditional incandescent bulbs. For a common lamp, an incandescent bulb will cost only few pounds, which will depend on the power and manufacturer of the bulb, while on the other hand a LED light bulb for the same lamp is cost about £20 to £55. Usually the LED light bulbs are 8 to 20 times more expensive than common bulbs. So, this is very costly for families and business owners as well. Another disadvantage of LED lights which is not very commonly known is that, they are very sensitive to heat. Their high sensitivity to heat affects the performance and colour of these lights. As we know that LED lights do not produce much heat themselves, but they are very well conductors of heat. This may decrease the output strength of the LED light and also shrink the life of LED lights. Thus, LED lights are not suitable for the places where a lot of heat is produced like factories for anywhere where lots of het is produced.

If you are Self-Employed then you are probably only too aware that time is money and time spent doing Self-Assessment Returns is time not earning money.

It can also be time consuming dealing with H.M. Revenue & Customs and deciding which allowances and expenses you can claim. It’s tempting to try and do this work yourself as a way to save money. However, getting it wrong can be a very expensive lesson to learn. Many accounting services are tax deductible meaning hiring an Accountant may not be as expensive as you think. We have a competitive fee structure and the guarantee of a fixed fee, combined with the convenience of a monthly direct debit, so why not let us take the pain out of Self-Assessment for you? For a fixed monthly fee starting at just £40 per month you will receive the services above as standard.
