St Mary’s Church, High St, Shirehampton St Mary’s is truly blessed by the many people who come to us to conduct a baptism, wedding or, sadly, a funeral. These are wonderful opportunities to meet and serve our community. Anyone who lives in the parish or fulfils other agreed criteria can be baptized (Christened) at St Mary’s. Baptisms take place in the 10.00am family friendly service held monthly. There is no charge and further details can be obtained from our website page stmarys@2day.ws or from the church office.
On Wednesday 20th July we have a lunch & Beetle Drive from 1.00 pm until 3.30 pm. Tickets are available from the Church Office - £5.00. Friday, 22nd July at 7.30 pm there will be a celebratory meal and fun to celebrate HM Queen Elizabeth's 90th Birthday. This will be in church, tickets available from the Church Office - £8.00. More next month!
St Mary’s is a lovely setting for a wedding and we welcome people for their wedding ceremony or to have their marriage blessed. The law now states that you may be eligible to marry at St Mary’s if you, or a close member of your family, have a connection with the church or village. Do contact us – 0117 9077026. One of the great privileges at St Mary’s is conducting funerals for members of our community. Anyone who lives in Shirehampton or is on the Electoral Roll of St Mary’s has a right to have their funeral conducted by our Ministers, either in the church or the Crematorium. If you would like a minister from St Mary’s to conduct a funeral service for you then please contact us or ask the Funeral Director to do so and we will do all we can to help. The Memorial Chapel in the church contains the Book of Remembrance. The name of any loved one can be inscribed in this beautiful book whether or not they have any connection with the church or village - flowers can also be left in the chapel as well as candles lit and prayer cards written.

Narrow down the dealership
Welcome to our new section each month called 1st Gear! Here we will give you information on new cars, old classics, advice, offers, reviews, tech and more each month.
Guide to buying a new or used vehicle Buying a quality used car or van is not as difficult as it may appear. Not all car dealers are out there to sell you a lemon, or to force you to buy services which you may never use. However, you must do your homework before you step onto any dealership to ensure you are fully prepared to negotiate with the dealership to get the best possible deal. Consider these tips when planning to purchase your next used car. They are not in any particular order but you should pay close attention to each one of them. Determine your budget Before you visit a dealership to test drive a car, consider your spending limit, based on your ability to pay now and in the future. Often, during the sales process, buyers end up purchasing a vehicle that is beyond their budget. So, make sure that you are firm as to how much you want to spend, how much financing you need, how much monthly payment you will be able to handle, and how much down payment you can afford.
Use social media sites, like Facebook, Bing, and Google Plus, to do research on local dealerships. See what people are saying about the dealership, its sales staff, after-sales customer service, and the way a dealership handles a complaint. You can also use sites like www.cardealerreviews.co.uk to read comments and feedback from customers. You should also ask your friends for referrals and their experience with local dealerships. Nothing comes close to personal experience. If you do decide to visit a dealership, don’t be afraid to ask questions. Bring someone with you If you feel intimidated by the car salesperson, then it may be a good idea to take a friend with you to help out during the test drive, finalizing your selection, and price negotiations. Be aware of add-ons that the car salesperson may try to sell you. Don’t be afraid to negotiate and say no when the price is outside of your budget. Don’t be afraid to walk away If not all of your expectations are met, walk away. Even if you feel you are ready to buy, we recommend you take a night to sleep on your decision and make sure it is the vehicle you really want. Discuss the car, its price, financing costs and other details with your family and friends. Review other dealerships’ websites to see how your selection compares to other vehicles. There is no need to rush. A smart dealer will always have good deals for a willing buyer.
Finalize which vehicle you want to buy Before you visit any dealership, you should know the make and model you want to buy. Do your research to make sure the model meets your requirements. Is it the colour, fuel efficiency, personal or family use, or resale value that is important for you? Read Consumer Reports to narrow down your search.

CITY AND PORT OF BRISTOL BOWLING CLUB It was a great day!! ---- just one of the positive comments made following the clubs first ever visit to Island Bohemian Bowls Club at Caversham on Sunday June 19th.
Ladies and Gentleman’s League Teams as well as individual players have taken part in County Competitions this season. Club Competitions are now in full swing and will culminate on Finals Day --- Saturday September 10th.
And a great day it was ---- very different to bowling at any other venue ---- where else do you travel by boat to the green? Just a short boat ride from Wolsey Road to the island in the middle of the River Thames for a great afternoons bowling, in pleasant surroundings and with equally pleasant company. Twenty seven bowlers and their families made the trip from Bristol to play this long awaited and much looked forward to game. The host club made City and Port very welcome and provided an excellent meal at the end of the afternoon. There was even a rendition of the IBC Song to entertain the visitors after the meal. Home Captain Steve Wood presented David Hinksman with a memento of the day ---- a framed picture and history of the island. Visits to Island Bohemian are very much by Invitation and there is a long waiting list. But hopefully it will be possible to return at some point in the future ---- so enjoyable was the initial visit. This season has seen some new bowlers making debuts in friendly and even league games. Having started bowling on Tuesday evenings at the start of the season, Shirley Callaghan and Lynn Burand have both represented the club in friendly games. Nick Burand has already made his league debut. Other, slightly less new bowlers have also made league debuts this season ---- Peter Cornish, Frank Jordan, Malcolm Towler and David Garrod are amongst those to do so. Ali Weston has now played a number of games for the Ladies League team. This is her second season of bowling and appearing in the league team is testimony to the value of practice and playing games regularly.
Tuesday evening sessions for anyone who would like to try bowling are still available. Please call David Hinksman on 0117 9082713 if you would like to come along. There is nothing to loose ---- sessions are free of charge, with all equipment supplied and experienced bowlers on hand to give help and advice. Sessions start at 5.30pm --- lasting as long as anyone wants to bowl a wood. Monday July 25th will see the City and Port of Bristol Club hosting a game between Gloucestershire and Somerset, competing for the Small Cup. Starting at 2pm the game promises to provide some good bowling --- why not come along and watch.
For further information please call David Hinksman on 0117 9082713.

Bristol City Community Trust will be delivering its popular football camps at two venues during the summer holidays, with both camps having a special Euro 2016 theme. The camps will be delivered at Gordano School, Portishead and Abbeywood School, Stoke Gifford from Monday, August 1st – Thursday, August 25th. They will run from 10am-3pm each day and are designed to give boys and girls of all abilities aged six-14 the opportunity to develop their footballing ability, social development and fitness, whilst participating in a fun, safe environment. “Not only do the participants benefit physically and mentally, but they also have a great chance to socialise with other children from around the community, who they may not otherwise interact with. “Our camps cater for children of all abilities, so whether your child has been inspired from the Euro’s and is aiming to become a professional footballer, or are a young player who simply enjoys participating in the sport, these camps are perfectly suited. “Although we hope to develop players during their time with us and give them some direction, the main emphasis of the camps is on participation and enjoyment!” The Euro-themed camps are priced at just £15 for one day, £30 for two days, £40 for three days or £50 for all four days. Now, I accept the necessity for upgrades and replacing worn-out infrastructure as much as the next person, but most of these don't appear to have people working on them most of the time or for most of their distance.
Welcome to The Word On The Street our new section where you the public can get your views heard also you can visit www.facebook.com/ thewordonthestreetbristol to post live chat with former Bristol councillor Eileen Means and public person Perry Hicks on everything Bristol. Last weekend, family and I went to the Lake District, up M5 then M6 expecting it to be busy, it was Friday lunchtime after all, but not take too long. WRONG! Avoiding the M5/M6 interchange that is always jammed, we stopped for a break just beyond Cannock. "Whay -ayy", we thought, "Cracked it, won't take long now cruising up the Motorway, nasty bit over". How wrong we were.
As a simple (all jokes off a duck's back!) motorist who pays all local and national taxes is it unreasonable to expect to travel from A to B in reasonable time without having to pack as many supplies as if setting out for a desert trek? Getting across Bristol is a nightmare, causing stress, extra fuel, unnecessary pollution and it must be costing the local economy.
There is a long, long stretch of roadworks, well, miles of marked off inside lane with lots and lots of cones, not a lot of actual "working" visible as you go north. Steady 50 mph just to bunch the traffic nicely. As I haven't been out of Bristol much recently due to elections'n'stuff, I thought roadworks were a Bristol disease; actually, the number of them plus the fact that they pockmark most roads from the suburbs to the centre, it's less a disease, more an epidemic. Barriers, traffic lights and holes in the roads are everywhere, thanks to Metrobus and its lesser variant, Bristol Waterworks.
Have you any ideas/solutions? I would suggest setting time limits and fining the company for outstanding repairs. My niece takes it further and says for every 100 yards without anyone working there, fine them for every half an hour, including nighttimes. Whatever, the poor motorist is not getting value for money for the taxes we pay. The customers - usare at the back of the queue, figuratively and literally. Article by Eileen Means Former councillor

Fun and Fundraising at Little Monsters!! Where do eggs come from?? Not just from a shop! One of our children brought in eggs from their chickens for us to use in our cooking. Lots of fun measuring, counting, mixing and then eating the Fairy Cakes we made....mmmmmm
We have been “Feet Printing”. Standing in the paint...”like ice-skating” as one child said.. and “squishy paint between our toes”..then stamping on the long paper to make our footprints and then washing our feet off before putting our socks and shoes back on. Raising money for other charities is fun when it’s a Teddy Bears Picnic. Everyone will be bringing their bear to raise money for Barnardo’s.....hopefully there will be enough sandwiches for all the bears!!!

Bristol Harbour Festival celebrates 45th anniversary Save the date for Bristol’s flagship event, Bristol Harbour Festival which celebrates its 45th anniversary on 15-17 July with a weekend packed full of music, entertainment and activities around the city’s harbourside. The Harbourside will be transformed with over four miles of activities, showcasing the talent and skills of the city. Stretching from the Underfall Yard on Cumberland Road into the City Centre and up to Castle Park, there will be an incredible variety of cultural entertainment. There really will be something for everyone. The anniversary celebrations will start with a special outdoor concert in the Lloyd’s Amphitheatre Friday 15th July.
The festival has a long standing commitment to waste recycling and as in previous years will once again come with a call to action – Keep Glass off the Grass and be responsible with your litter, using the recycling bins provided. To maintain the green space, alcohol cannot be brought into Queen Square, where bars will be available. All Festival traders will be encouraged to use environmentally friendly packaging and food wrapping. Visitors to the festival are requested to buy plastic bottles or aluminium cans instead of glass bottles and use the correct recycling bins around the Festival site to help cleaning teams recycle over half of the waste generated.
The ticketed event will be headlined by English rock legends and 80’s chart toppers, Echo and The Bunnymen with support from singer-songwriter and former Haircut 100 front man, Nick Heyward. Following the Friday night concert, the Lloyd’s Amphitheatre will be the venue for the Festival’s music stage, making the most of the natural acoustics of Bristol’s harbour. The dance performance and participation stages move into the city’s iconic Queen Square, surrounded by a continental food and craft market. This year the beautiful aerial acts, daredevil stunts and family entertainment will return to Castle Park and a new route featuring music and markets will run along Redcliffe Quay and Merchants Quay to connect the festival areas. The Festival showcases Bristol’s incredible maritime heritage, encompassing M Shed and Wapping Wharf at the east end of the harbour, SS Great Britain –the venue for a music stage and market over the weekend – and the newly-opened visitor centre at Underfall Yard. Festival goers can either jump onto the Cross Harbour Ferry at the ss Great Britain across to the New Harbour Inlet or continue to enjoy the walk along the harbour from Underfall Yard, over to the Grain Barge where festival entertainment will take them along Harbourside Walk and back into the heart of the event.
Councillor Estella Tincknell, Deputy Mayor with special responsibility for Culture, said: “I am delighted to welcome back the Bristol Harbour Festival for its 45th anniversary for what I am sure will be one of the biggest celebrations of our city’s maritime history yet. The festival has become an important fixture in Bristol’s world class events programme and a popular showcase of the city’s talents, skills and imagination. With so many people expected to come and enjoy the Harbourside over the festival weekend I would like to remind visitors to show the city some love and do what they can to reduce litter and waste and above all, have a happy Harbour Festival.” Tickets for the Friday night concert are available now from the Colston Hall Box Office and cost £21.50 including booking fee. Call 0844 887 1500 or visit www.colstonhall.org. For more information see www.bristolharbourfestival.co.uk, @Bristolharbfest and www.facebook.com/bristolharbourfestival

Psychic protection We live in a world of many different forms of energies. Even in our everyday lives, we can be affected by these energies that places and other people give out through emotions and past events. Some people are more able to pick up these energies and feelings, and most of us still use our intuition although we are not always aware of doing so. One of the easiest ways to protect our selves is with the blue cloak. You simply visualise a blue cloak surrounding yourself from head to toe and ask your angel's or whoever you work with to protect you, and always finish with a thank you and a bliessing. For home or property, I always ask my guides or angels to protect my home, garden and cats, and for blessings on my day and for those that I meet. With thanks and blessings.
