Editors words Wow! how hot has it been lately. Hope everyone has been enjoying the sunshine. Well its August and we are over half way through the year already, schools officially out and lots of events on this summer like the Bristol international Balloon Fiesta and things to do in your local community. Just get out in your local community and enjoy all the things going on in your area and have fun in the sunshine. One of the topics in some areas are the shear amount of flies about a the moment they seem to have been busy multiplying exponentially especially in the Avonmouth area. Feels like we just have to put up with it as local councils have no interest in the problem. Have you got a remedy if so let us know at Direct Local. So finally what do we all think of Boris as our new Prime Minister then? Will he do the job and take us in to Brexit or will he just be another Prime minister that offers everything and gives us nothing but beating around the bush. personally i think we will never leave the EU and another referendum is on the cards but please tell us your thought on this as we love to get your points of view on this subject.

Your Garden In August

After the heat of July, the weather usually continues to be very nice giving us time to simply enjoy our gardens and all the hard work we’ve put into them. Don’t worry too much about doing endless jobs – just remember to keep everything watered. If you are going away, you may need to enlist the help of friends and family to look after the garden. If you are at home and feeling energetic, there are still a few gardening tasks for August that will keep your gardens going longer, as well as opportunities to get a head start on next year’s garden plans.

Take herb cutting

August is the ideal month to take cuttings woody herbs such as Rosemary and Lavender. To do this, simply take new growth that hasn’t flowered this year cut a piece 10cm long just below a leaf joint, remove the lower leaves and dip the end in a rooting hormone before planting in a gritty compost. If you have lavender in the garden, now is also the ideal time to give it a trim. This will encourage new bushy growth in the spring and will prevent it becoming bare and woody.

Pruning and tidying

Most long flowering perennials will finish flowering this month so cut them down to the ground. Don’t forget about them though – continue to water them, as this will encourage a second flush of foliage and generally prevent the garden looking frazzled and messy. Although weeds will be growing more slowly now than in the spring it’s a good idea to continue to hoe the soil to keep them down.

6

Try to do this in warm, dry conditions to ensure weed seedlings you disturb are left on the surface to dehydrate and die.

Make plans for next year

Volunteers Needed to Help Change Lives for People Living with Sight Loss The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association needs volunteers to help improve the confidence and independence of people with a visual impairment. Some of those hoping for a volunteer have been waiting for several months, so getting involved could really help change someone’s life. My Guide is a service that Guide Dogs offers whereby a trained, sighted guide, is partnered with someone with sight loss. My Guides accompany service users to facilitate tasks such as running errands, practicing everyday routes, using public transport, or going to the gym to build confidence in these areas.

Ross, a volunteer in Bristol says, “It’s a simple yet fulfilling role that makes a positive difference. My match, Shruthi, is able to attend events with my support, such as the International Women’s Day event at Bristol City Hall, which she would have found much harder to do alone. My training with Guide Dogs prior to being matched with Shruthi was invaluable. I’d recommend the role to anyone who is looking for volunteer opportunities.” Guide Dogs provides full training for all volunteers. To apply, go to the Guide Dogs website (https:// www.guidedogs.org.uk/) and click on Volunteering or call the South West Team on 0345 143 0204.

Maeve Kearney, My Guide Volunteer Manager, says “My Guide is a fantastic service that enables volunteers to help people who are partially sighted or blind to take part in activities that they may not have been able to take part in previously. Many people living with sight loss experience isolation or loneliness, and I have seen first-hand how having a My Guide volunteer can help turn their life around”

Sit back & relax this August as we have all the action, comedy, romance and Tarantino you need.

Fast & Furious Hobbs & Shaw

With the summer sun continuing to swelter, running to your nearest air-conditioned Cineworld is a logical way to spend your time. Luckily, there’s plenty of silver screen hits set to debut in August – so let’s get into it! Kicking us off on August 1st is Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham in the first ever Fast & Furious spin-off, Hobbs & Shaw. Going up against Idris Elba’s big bad super-soldier, the two will need to put aside their differences to take down this seemingly unstoppable common enemy. A day later sees more familiar faces return via The Angry Birds Movie 2, with Red, Chuck and Bomb back for another adventure where they are forced to go head-to-head with a rival island of Eagles.

The Angry Birds Movie 2

Fast forward to August 9th and there’s a great double bill as both The Art of Racing in the Rain and The Sun is also a Star take to the cinema. The former tells the story of a race car driver and his dog, while the latter centres on two hopeless romantics that fall swiftly in love. Then, on August 14th, Quentin Tarantino’s show biz satire Once upon a time in Hollywood arrives in cinemas, boasting an all-star cast that includes the likes of Margot Robbie, Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt. A TV actor and his stunt double want to achieve mainstream success, but 1969 LA has other plans. Two days later, Good Boys is a new type of coming-of-age comedy that proves skipping school isn’t always the correct choice.

The Sun is also a Star

And remember, as always Cineworld Bristol and Direct Local Magazine are giving readers a chance to win a prize. Simply fill out the next page Word search. There’s so many great movies coming to Cineworld in August. You only need pick which to see first!

City & Port of Bristol Bowls Club When would you find people wearing silly hats, a spider without legs --- but a prize for the bowler able to bowl a wood closest to it, and a barbeque at a bowling green in Shirehampton?

Thanks go to Warburtons for supporting this prestigious event and to Natalie Looker who produced some great posters to tell everyone what was going on.

Put the lemon peel strips on a baking tray and bake for 15-20 minutes until pale-golden and dry. Using a pestle and mortar or a rolling pin, grind the baked lemon peel and salt together.

Stir in the chilli, garlic, rosemary and a little freshly ground black pepper and mix well. Now ‘butterfly’ the chicken breasts. Hold 1 chicken breast on a chopping board and slice through the middle horizontally until almost cut in half – take care not to go all the way! Open out flat like a butterfly. Repeat with the other breasts and rub the lemon mixture all over the cut sides. Lay flat on 2 plates, cover and chill for at least 1 hour. Meanwhile, make the potato salad. Cook the potatoes in a saucepan of boiling water over a high heat for 15-20 minutes or until tender. Drain and halve, put them in a bowl and pour over the stock. Toss well and leave to cool – the potatoes will soak up some of the stock while they’re still warm. Mix the mayonnaise and yogurt in a bowl, stir in the herbs and spring onions and season to taste. Add to the potatoes and fold everything together. Light the barbecue for direct medium heat. Spray the chicken with low-calorie cooking spray and barbecue over direct medium heat for 8-10 minutes or until tender and cooked through, turning once. Or cook on a griddle pan over a medium-high heat. Scatter over the extra lemon zest, chilli and rosemary and serve hot with the creamy potato salad and lots of salad or veg.

Caught by the pension tax trap?

Those looking to cash in part, or all, of their personal pension need to check they don’t pay too much tax. Pension freedom rules allow anyone aged 55 or over to access their personal pension funds, there are complex rules on how withdrawals are taxed. Problems can occur if you take a one-off lump sum – an ‘uncrystallised fund pension lump sum withdrawal’ (UFPLS) – perhaps to reinvest or to pay off debts. This differs from using a personal pension to provide a regular income, through a drawdown plan or annuity. Your pension provider will apply an emergency tax code, which assumes you are withdrawing the UFPLS on a monthly basis, unless it has an up-to date tax code for you. For example, if you take a UFPLS of £10,000 at the start of the tax year, HMRC may assume you will take an income of £120,000 across the year from your pension and tax you accordingly. If it is a one-off withdrawal, you are likely to pay too much tax.

Avoiding the charge As emergency tax codes are generally only applied the first-time people access their pension funds, one option is to make your first withdrawal a nominal amount, say £100. The emergency tax code is still applied, but this triggers HMRC to adjust your tax code and send an updated version to your pension provider. Once the new code has been issued, any further, larger withdrawals are taxed correctly. You may be able to claim a rebate, either through your tax return at the end of the tax year, or HMRC if you need the rebate more quickly. If you are planning to withdraw a lump sum from your pension contact Bristol & West financial services. The Financial Conduct Authority does not regulate tax advice. Levels and bases of taxation and tax reliefs are subject to change and their value depends on individual circumstances. Tax laws can change.

In essence – any piece of paper if it contains even incomplete confidential information which can be linked back to an individual or company in a private or professional capacity.

Confidential waste applies to every business – not just banks, accountants and solicitors. So, what is confidential paper waste? The obvious ones in relation to customers, suppliers and staff are: * Financial information * Medical information * Payroll information & Banking details * Home addresses Less obvious bits of paper are: * Job sheets which contain any customer information * Old drafts of letters which have been scribbled on * Payment slips from credit card terminals * Customer enquiry forms / Lead forms * Contact Management or Accounting software printouts * A notebook containing handwritten notes which may include sensitive information

It’s important such paperwork is: 1. While current and in use, kept securely, not viewable by passers’ by and locked away when outside of work 2. Put in a secure locked container whilst waiting collection / destruction 3. Destroyed by a capable and authorised person who can provide you with a certification of collection and destruction.
