Shirehampton Markets celebrate their 3rd Birthday on Thursday 1st September at their ‘High Street Market’. This is quite an achievement having overcome lock downs and the lingering Coronavirus and now the ‘cost of living crisis’ which is facing everyone at this time.
The High Street Market takes place on the first Thursday of every month. Birthday celebrations are happening on Thursday 1st September from 10am until 3pm at the Tithe Barn, High Street, Shirehampton, Bristol, BS11 0DE.
The second secret is, Shirehampton Markets work together with SCAF (Shirehampton Community Action Forum) to run their events and volunteers Katherine Birth, Kathryn Courtney along with Ash Bearman who is SCAF’s Community Development Officer, are the Management Team. This birthday celebration is to bring the local communities together to have a fun time together and have an enjoyable day that not only has market stalls to browse but games to play – giant snakes and ladders, bounce, buzz wire and card games – painting pop pies, colouring books, sudoku, word search es and D.I.Y face painting.
There is also a ‘Find The Sunflowers’ hunt that children can take part in – and yes adults if they want to! – to find 15-character sunflowers in shops and business along Shirehampton’s very own High Street. The prize for completed sunflower searches is a bag of pick n mix sweets. All are winners with this game, and it is a bit of family fun as well as discovering some great shops we have in the village.

Bristol City Council has expanded its bike loan scheme to include an additional 20 bikes that have been converted to electric. The Revos eBike Conversion Kits are designed and made in Bristol and are an affordable and very efficient way to convert existing bikes to electric. The kits can be fitted in around half an hour and weigh so little that you can happily ride without it being powered up. The council will be offering residents the chance to try out the Revos eBikes in a one-month free trial, enabling them to replace trips which may otherwise have been taken by car. Since 2016, the council’s loan bike scheme has helped over 1,500 people to borrow one of its bikes. In total, there are now 60 regular bikes, 22 eBikes, 20 Revos eBikes, and 11 folding bikes available to loan. The loan scheme is available for anyone over 18 years old and a deposit is required on collection.
Councillor Don Alexander, Cabinet Member for Transport, said: “The aim of this scheme is to introduce more people to e-bike conversion kits and let them experience the benefits first-hand. We’re offering an opportunity to try out a new technology that is better for the environment, helping us to work towards cleaner air, and less congestion and pollution, while being an affordable option. By being able to test the Revos eBikes, it will hopefully help residents to decide whether this might be a suitable long-term transport option for them and encourage them to purchase a kit for themselves”.
The cycle expansion is part of the WECA’s wider plans to increase the number of e-bikes on roads up and down the region after last year winning £248,000 from the Govern ment to buy e-bikes and expand e-bike loan schemes like the scheme in Bristol.

Richard Walker, managing director of Iceland, said “fresh thinking” was required from business and government to find workable solutions to the cost of living crisis, reports The Guardian. The initiative has been supported by organisations including Nesta, a UK innovation foundation, and the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, a grant-making charity.
ICELAND’S PAY LATER £75 SHOP SCHEME
According to Iceland 83% of participants said that they no longer need to access food banks, 80% reported an improvement in their mental health, 85% said that they were less worried about meeting their monthly expenses, and 75% reported that they are feeding their children more healthily. Anyone can apply for the scheme and, if successful, credit can be used both in-store and online using the preloaded card.
Successful applicants receive a £100 credit limit and can load an initial top-up of £25 to £75 on to their cards. Online, Iceland said: "We do perform credit searches on an application, but we don't do generic credit scoring - we prefer to look at how you’re repaying things now rather than something that may have happened many years ago."
The initiative is part of a link-up between Iceland and a charity-owned lender, Fair For You. The trial scheme, Iceland Food Club, will see the loans uploaded to Food Club card, repaid at the rate of £10 per week.

The move comes from an initial pilot phase which was offered to 5,000 customers. So far, Iceland has given out £1m in the loans. They were originally charged interest, but Iceland have now invested an unknown amount into “making all loans completely interest-free for the national rollout”. As reported by The Guardian, an independent evaluation of the pilot found that 92% of customers who had previously used food banks had stopped or reduced their use, while 71% said they were less likely to fall behind on rent, council tax or other bills.
Iceland is offering a zero-interest loans scheme designed to help struggling families across the UK as the cost of living surges. The frozen food giant will provide people with small loans from £25 to £75 to bridge the gap in income, allowing parents to pay the cost of the school holidays grocery bill.

HERE ARE MY TOP 5 TIPS FOR LOOKING BEYOND THE CV, AND THIS APPLIES TO ANY POSITION: We are in the process of hiring staff at the moment and, one of the positions is, arguably, and, in my humble opinion, one of the most pivotal roles in the Agency. It’s the Viewings role. So often underestimated but so important – why? Because it’s the first point of contact and, as such, the face of KPA; this person will (after lots of training) be charged with choosing tenants for our properties and for our landlords’ properties (and it’s well known how important we think this process is) and they will be liaising with the team, the tenants and making value judgements along every step of the way. Now, there are some things we can teach and some things we can’t and lots of the attributes required for the viewing’s role are things you cannot teach, so it’s crucial that we are able to really get a sense of the person in these interviews. Common sense and the ability to read people are right at the top of the wish list on this one and it’s hard to see this on a CV. We opt for a two staged interview process, and we psychometrically profile the candidates too. This may well sound very 1960s – but it is so that we can get a sense of whether they are a process driven person, a sales driven person or a people’s person and how this mix looks.

This isn’t just so that we choose the right candidate, but because we want them to be happy, content, working in their excellence and to stay. There is nothing more disheartening, than putting lots of training effort in, only for someone to leave in 6 months’ time. We are not after a quick fix, we are after a solid team member, who is going to be with us for many years to come. Recruiting in this current market sounds easy, as there are some fabulous candidates out there and we have definitely seen a rise in the number of applications, since our last hire but when you are looking for things like enthusiasm, personality, work ethic and people skills as job requirements it’s hard to see where these fit on a CV – a CV won’t tell you whether someone is a natural communicator! So, you need to do the legwork! Everyone loves a little quick fix these days don’t they – but this is one of those times where you need to get involved and, I’ve said it so many times, and I’ll say it again, people will tell you so much about themselves, if you will only listen!

1. Adaptable and transferrable skills. With the right amount of training and time, even without any experience, a great candidate can turn out to be a really valuable member of the team.
5. Someone from a different business background can bring new ideas, new ways of thinking and great diversity to your team and, may even be able to think of things that you have never considered! A new team member, fresh to the role, with experience from other industries, who feels excited about the position and empowered to speak their minds because they know that they will be heard, is a wonderful thing. Watching the team grow with the business is one of the most rewarding things and, undoubtedly my favourite part of growing a So,business!wishus luck. These next few weeks are going to be busy, as we are interviewing for several new members of staff. The viewings’ role is one where the successful candidate will need to fill big shoes, as our last team member was absolutely fantastic! She left us to go travelling around Europe, working on the way (which obviously didn’t lend itself well to viewings). We were so excited for her that we couldn’t even be mad that she left Sheus! was much loved by tenants, landlords and the rest of the team alike. We are hoping for the same this time around and will definitely be looking beyond the CV for these attributes!
2. Think about industries (like hospitality) that have been decimated by the pandemic. Candidates may have been out of work for a while. See beyond this. They may give you 110% effort, be super grateful for the opportunity and worth their weight in gold.

Many of us think of Michelin as a tyre company rather than a food company, but the two are actually linked. Bowling is in many ways a unique sport ---there is no age limit --- too young or two old when you can start playing it and once you have started playing ---- no limit to how far you can develop and play the game. The basics of bowling are simple and they can be learned very quickly but to perfect and improve them takes time and can only be done by practice and taking part in games. This season at the City and Port club new players have arrived, learned the basics, started playing games very quickly and as a result they have developed into very able bowlers. There is nothing like playing games to develop and improve your skills.
Bowling is a sport that is played to suit individual player’s needs and ambitions. For some it is played purely for pleasure and to meet other bowlers. For others it can be competitive and that can extend beyond club level. A number of bowlers at the City and Port Club have played in County Competi tions this season. Sadly there was no repeat of Ken Davis’s great achievement last season when he reached the final of the Bristol Section Champion of Champions but the club has been better represented this year than for many years Interestprevious.in this year’s competitions came to an end at Olveston on Monday July 25th when David Hinksman and Howard Surman played Joe Hardwick and John Smallwood in the City and County Pairs Competition. Playing away against two very good players was a big challenge but David and Howard gave a good account of themselves --- over the 21 ends played they lead briefly at one stage, never let their opponents build a big lead and at the end lost by just eight shots --- it was a very good and competitive game of bowls.
Earlier in the season
The clubs latest arrival is David Lockyer who first came to the green to learn the basics with Ken Davies ahead of going on the Eastbourne Tour. David played his first ever game on tour and since returning has played his first Men’s League game. Having played sport all of his life he has now taken to bowling and enjoys playing it.
The club is pleased to see Sandra Rees returning after being unable to bowl for some time due to ill health. She came back in August and straight away played for the Ladies League Team.
CITY AND PORT OF BRISTOL BOWLING CLUB
Phill Chard became a bowler after going to the Big Bowls Open Day with Father in Law Adrian Mace --- who had bowled previously at Avonmouth. They are both playing regularly on Monday evenings, in the Men’s League Team and in mixed friendly games.
The Ladies League season ended at Beg brook on Friday August 5th with a win on one rink of the two played but an overall loss. Captained by Flo Grimes on the night the ladies came away with a well earned two points. Next season will see them playing in Division Three and looking for a quick return to Division Two where they have played for many years.
The season has reached its closing stages but there is still plenty of bowling to come including the Club Competition Finals over the week-end 17th/18th September and the final of the Club Knockout Cup on September 5th.
Bristol After Stroke Club will be on the green once more on Thursday September 8th following a successful and highly enjoyable visit earlier in the season.

The Men’s League Team remains in Division Four after a season of mixed results, new players and relying on the support of the three permitted ladies in order to field a team.
Method 1. First, make the marinade by combining the olive oil, oregano, garlic, lemon juice and zest, chilli flakes, vinegar, sugar, pepper and capers.
2. Put the Feta in a small dish and pour over the 3.marinade.Chillfor at least 1 hour, or longer if you have time, turning it occasionally.
5. Position the Feta in the middle, drizzle over the marinade and scatter over the mint leaves.
Ingredients • 4 tbsp extra virgin olive oil • 1 tsp dried oregano • 1/2 garlic clove, crushed • Zest and juice of 1 lemon • 1/4 tsp chilli flakes • 1 tsp red wine vinegar • 1/2 tsp caster sugar • 1 tsp freshly ground black pepper • 2 tsp capers, drained • 200g pack Greek Feta cheese • 225g pack piccolo tomatoes, halved • 1/2 cucumber, cut into 2cm chunks • 1 small red onion, finely sliced • 10 pitted black hojiblanca olives • 7 mint leaves, roughly torn GREEK SALAD WITH MARINATED FETA
4. To serve, arrange the tomatoes, cucumber, onion and olives on a plate.

Summer is coming to an end with the month of September generally being a cooler month than August. The days are becoming noticeably shorter, but the weather is, however usually warm and calm, giving us the ideal conditions to plant trees and shrubs. September is a good month to lift and divide summer-flowering herbaceous perennials. Most perennials need to be divided every three to five years as the plant can become too big for the border and become congest ed. Dividing will invigorate the plant and help to improve flowering and overall shape next year. Gently dig out the plant you want to divide, being careful not to damage the roots. Use a garden fork to separate the plant into two then shake of any excess soil and replant in your chosen spot as soon as possible.

TAKE PERENNIAL CUTTINGS
Take cuttings of perennials such as fuchsia, salvia, verbena, penstemon and chrysanthe mum. It’s a great way to increase the number of plants you have for your summer display and there’s something really satisfying about seeing plants grow that you’ve created yourself. Find some strong growth that hasn’t flowered this year and cut a 5 - 10 cm stem just below a leaf joint. Strip the leaves from the lower stem and leave one or two pairs at the top. Dip the end in hormone rooting powder and plant in pots of compost mixed with grit. Leave the pots somewhere bright and warm until rooted then re-pot into larger containers. Over winter in the greenhouse or conservatory.
