Well its February, some say its the month of love. I suppose it is Valentines day 14th and all you love birds will be taking your girlfriend, wife or husbands out for a romantic meal or cooking at home and choosing an early night. Personally I choose to stay in with my lovely wife have a slimming world meal and watch the soaps lol !! Seriously though lots going on in February so check out our events guide for more details. By now we should have also left the EU too and about time if all goes well... Whoops!! I’ve gone and probably jinxed it now sorry folks. Whats your thoughts though on the whole palaver. Let us know we would love to hear your views via email or snail mail. Bristol and Somerset store events raise money for six good causes
Every penny has been raised by colleagues and customers who want to help the store’s current charity partner.
Nearly £19,000 has been raised by Bristol and Somerset co-operative colleagues and customers in 2019 for local causes close to their hearts. Every year, each convenience store part of Southern Co-op, partners with a special local cause chosen by colleagues. he Co-operative Food store colleagues then have a year to hold fundraising events in aid of the cause. In 2019, six different local causes were chosen by the Bristol and Somerset stores including Children's Hospice South West, Clevedon and District Foodbank, Dorset and Somerset Air A mbulance, The Brainwave Centre, The Royal Marines Charity, and Vallis First School. Fundraisers for the charities were held by colleagues at 26 stores including Banwell's Knightcott Road, Bath's Widcombe Hill, Bedminster's North Street, Bridgwater's Stockmoor Park, Bristol's Ashley Down Road, Church Road, Gloucester Road, Longdown Avenue, Redcliffe Street, School Road, Two Mile Hill Road, Wells Road, and Whiteladies Road, Burnham on Sea's Berrow Road, Clevedon's Old Street, Cotford St. Luke's Graham Way, Frome's Nunney Road, Hanham's Memorial Road, Keynsham's Queens Road, Nailsea's Hannah More Road, Norton Fitzwarren's Morse Road, Pill's Baltic Place, Portishead's Port Marine, Stoke Gifford's North Road, Taunton's Wellington New Road, and Yeovil's Mudford Road. Jessica Hughes, Community Investment Manager at Southern Co-op - the regional, independent co-operative, said: "Each of our stores has a budget which they can donate to special projects but this total is separate.
"A lot of the causes are really small and may simply need help letting people know what they do. Then others have been running for years supporting hundreds of residents in their time of need. "We are so proud of our colleagues who work tirelessly to give back to these causes. Thank you."After a year of awareness days, fundraisers and challenges, 20 of the Bristol and Somerset stores are now in search of their next charity partner. Local causes are invited to apply to become a charity partner in 2020-21 as part of Southern Co-op's ‘Love Your Neighbourhood' programme. The programme aims to create greener, safer, healthier or more inclusive neighbourhoods. Amanda Gallagher, Corporate Partnerships Fundraiser for Children's Hospice South West, said: "The support we've had from Southern Co-op in 2019 was phenomenal. From sponsoring our Rainbow Run to the teams getting involved and volunteering at our shops, I really can't thank them enough for their enthusiasm and determination to make a difference. "Their fundraising helps support our three hospices across the south west and will help to make sure that we can continue to be here whenever families need us." Your Garden in February If you’re a keen gardener February is a month filled with anticipation. The first signs of life are beginning to emerge as plants shake off their winter dormancy and wildlife begins to wake. Light levels are increasing, temperatures are rising and splashes of colour are beginning to creep back into the garden. Spring is on its way and there is plenty of preparation to do. Prune plants Prune late flowering shrubs such as fuchsia, hydrangea, buddleja and ceanothus. Using sharp secateurs, cut just above an outward pointing bud. Aim to remove about a third of the height of the shrub and try to maintain an even shape. Check other shrubs and remove any dead, diseased or damaged branches to keep the plant healthy. Try to avoid pruning early flowering shrubs until after they have flowered. Give the lawn a light mow If the weather is warm you may need to start mowing. Set the cutting height on your mower to its maximum and only mow when it’s dry. Re-cutting lawn edges will also give an instant lift to the appearance of the garden. Plant shrubs and trees February is the ideal time to plant new shrubs and trees while they are still in their dormant state. Make sure the ground is not frozen or water logged before planting. Stakes and rabbit guards should be put in place at the time of planting to prevent damage to the root ball or bark. It’s also a good idea to check ties and stakes on existing plants and replace, tighten or slacken where necessary.
Plant of the Month Camellias
Why should you plant them? Welcome in the spring with Camellias-these hardy shrubs have glossy evergreen leaves and display flowers that brighten up your winter. An early riser in terms of plants waking up from the winter snooze. Camellias burst into flower in February just as the rest of the garden is starting to blink its eyes at the sunshine. How should you plant them? Camellias are easy to grow and flower relliably-the most important thing is choosing the right spot. Although a hardy shrub their flower buds are susceptible to frost once they start to develop so plant in a sheltered spot and wrap with fleece when frost is forecast. Camellias like to grow in acidic soil so need planting with ericaceous compost. feed with ericaceous plant food to keep the leaves glossy and green and water well once the flower buds appear-although the flowers wont break until February. The buds will begin to develop in autumn.

Especially the banquet scene, where Lady Macbeth is struggling to keep the celebrations going while her husband is struggling with the realisation of his murderous actions.” Opera in a Box’s production of Macbeth will be performed in a promenade setting, and will require the audience to move through the tunnels and stand for a period of approximately 15mins. Super sweetcorn fritters
Ingredients 25g Plain flour 1 large egg, beaten ½ heaped tsp baking powder 165g sweetcorn, drained or defrosted 4-5 stems of chives or 1 spring onion, finely chopped 1 tbsp vegetable oil
Method
1. Place 1/3 of the sweetcorn and the rest of the ingredients except the oil in a jug or small bowl and blend to make smooth with a stick blender . 2. Stir in the remaining sweetcorn. 3. Heat half of the oil in a large frying pan on a
medium- high heat and drop in 4-5 spoonfuls of the batter. Fry for about 1 ½ minutes until golden on the underside, then carefully turn and cook for approximately a further 1 ½ minutes.
4. Drain briefly on kitchen paper before serving.
Repeat with the remaining batter, adding the extra oil. Makes 10-14.

Add ¼ tsp chilli flakes for a bit of heat!

Replace the sweetcorn with peas. Crumble in feta, add a few chopped mint or basil leaves. Serve with a sweet chilli dip or a yogurt and chive dip

Freeze for up to two months in an airtight container.

Volunteers needed now for Marie Curie’s Great Daffodil Appeal in Bristol Marie Curie, the UK’s leading charity for people living with a terminal illness and their families, is urgently calling for volunteers in Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire to give just two hours of their time to hand out the charity’s iconic daffodil pins, in return for donations.
“Volunteering just two hours at a local collection is a great way to show your support and help us raise money to help make sure that we can be there for more people at the end of their lives.
Volunteers will be supporting the Great Daffodil Appeal – Marie Curie’s biggest fundraising campaign, held every March.
“Collecting can be a lot of fun too. You can do it on your own or with family and friends, and we will support you every step of the way. Volunteering is also an easy way to get involved in your local community and meet new people.”
In the next 10 years, more than six million people will die in the UK1 and of this number 75% will need end of life care.2 The money raised from the Great Daffodil Appeal will help Marie Curie Nurses provide much-needed expert care to people across Bristol with terminal illnesses, as well as support for their loved ones.
Diane Smallridge from Bristol, said: “I collect every year for the Great Daffodil Appeal and it’s a great feeling to be supporting such an important cause. I’ve met so many kind and interesting people along the way - many of whom have directly benefited from the care provided by Marie Curie Nurses in their own homes.”
Helen Isbell, Marie Curie Community Fundraiser for Bristol, said: “Whether you wear a daffodil pin in celebration, in solidarity or in memory of a loved one, you are joining with millions of others to help make sure Marie Curie Nurses can care for more people, as well as providing invaluable support to their families.
