Things Bristol is Famous For

1. Clifton Suspension Bridge Clifton suspension bridge is probably Bristol’s most famous landmark. The Clifton Suspension Bridge was designed by the Victorian engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel. The bridge, which is about 1,532 metres long, connects Clifton in Bristol to Leigh Woods in North Somerset. It can offer some amazing views when you walk, drive, or cycle across it – including when the hot air balloon festival is taking place. It was also the location of the first modern bungee jump in 1979, although the act itself wasn’t actually legal. Bristol has a lot to offer visitors, with many interesting facts to discover about the city, its history, and how you can enjoy Bristol today. 2. Maritime History Bristol is a port city, and the location of Bristol harbour made it the ideal place for maritime trade. Tobacco, wine, and cotton were some of the commodities that passed through the city. Of course, there is also a darker side to this history. From the 1600s to the 1800s, Bristol was also heavily involved in the slave trade. Many buildings and landmarks in the city have been named after Edward Colston, a prominent politician, philanthropist – and slave trader. However, they are slowly being changed, such as in the case of Colston Hall, a concert hall that has been renamed Bristol Beacon. Another interesting maritime fact is Bristol’s connection with piracy – that’s why pirates often sound like they have West Country accents! Blackbeard is thought to have been born in Redcliffe, near Bristol Harbourside. 4

4. Interesting Inventions Most cities are the birthplace of some interesting inventions or inventors – although some are more interesting than others. Bristol has given rise to some fascinating things, from confectionary to scientific breakthroughs. Bristol is the originator of the drink Ribena, as well as home to Fry’s Chocolate, which was the first company in the world to make chocolate bars and modern chocolate Easter eggs.

3. Arts and Culture Bristol is a fantastic hub for arts and culture. It has some prominent venues for all kinds of arts, including Bristol Beacon, where you can attend music concerts of all types, and The Comedy Club. Bristol Hippodrome is home to musicals, theatre, pantomime, stand up comedy, and more. You’ll never be bored if you’re looking for fun and interesting live shows to watch in Bristol. Bristol is also the birthplace of some famous people in arts and culture. Hollywood star Cary Grant was born in Bristol, and his first job in theatre was working at the Hippodrome. Graffiti artist Banksy is also from Bristol, and his works can be found at various spots around the city. Even Darth Vader is from Bristol – Bristolian David Prowse provided the physical side of Darth Vader though not his voice.

On a slightly more sophisticated note, the world’s first IVF baby was conceived in Bristol (although she was born in Oldham, Greater Manchester). Tarmacked roads got their start in Bristol too, where Scottish engineer John Loudon McAdam began remaking roads after joining the Bristol Turnpike Trust as a surveyor in 1816. And almost 90 years later, Bristolian P.J. Kerswell would invent the detachable motorcycle sidecar. 5. Balloon Festival Every year, the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta takes place in the city. Teams from the UK and around the world take part in mass ascents, with up to 100 balloons taking to the sky at the same time. The event has been taking place for more than 40 years and often draws crowds of more than 100,000 to watch the balloons take flight over the four days of the festival. You can see standard hot air balloons, but also a variety of balloons with special shapes, many of which are made by the Bristol balloon makers Cameron Balloons. 5

BILLYCHIP® LAUNCHES LOCAL PARTNERSHIP WITH GREGGS

BILLYCHIP® LAUNCHES LOCAL PARTNERSHIP WITH GREGGS BillyChip®, the social enterprise scheme supporting rough sleepers, has embarked on a local partnership with Greggs, the UK's leading bakery food-on-the-go retailer. Seven Greggs outlets across Bristol city centre will be selling the BillyChip on a trial basis over 8 weeks to help support local rough sleepers and homeless people.

The BillyChip platform allows people to purchase a token from Greggs Bristol outlets which can then be given to rough sleepers and homeless people as an alternative to cash. They can then redeem the BillyChip for food and drink at nearly 40 outlets across the city. The BillyChip scheme is a simple concept, offering a bridge between those wanting to give and those needing a little kindness and compassion. Jon Hope, Co-Founder at BillyChip shared: "It's wonderful to be working with Greggs to support our local homeless population with the BillyChip. By removing cash from the equation, BillyChip overcomes stigmas associated with giving to those on the streets and also adds an element of choice, enabling those receiving a Chip to decide what drink or food item to buy. 6

Like everyone else in the community, rough sleepers have dietary requirements too and so choice is hugely valuable. Greggs is such a well-recognised brand, and we're hoping that this trial provides scope to roll out the BillyChip into other Greggs shops across the UK." Greggs already runs a number of initiatives and schemes aimed at supporting diversity and inclusivity, recognising issues including homelessness. The 8 week trial runs across seven Greggs shops in Bristol from 3rd March 2022.

The world’s largest biomethane refuelling station opened in Avonmouth London company CNG Fuels, the leading provider of renewable biomethane for HGVs in the Uk announced this week the opening of the world’s largest public access biomethane refuelling station in Avonmouth, This site will meet the growing demand from major brands to cut emissions from haulage and save money, while also supporting the decarbonisation of the UK’s road haulage sector, responsible for 18% of total UK road transport emissions. Located in Avonmouth the site is capable of handling the refuelling of 80 HGVs per hour from 14 high-speed dispensers, making it the largest public access biomethane refuelling station in the world. When fully utilised, the station will cut 70,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions per year by taking diesel HGVs off the road. The site is part of CNG Fuels’ nationwide network of eight renewable biomethane refuelling stations which covers the length and breadth of the country, enabling low carbon deliveries all the way down to Cornwall. CNG Fuels is aiming to build 12 additional stations each year to cater for growing demand.

10

The demand for renewable biomethane has increased by 1,000% over the last five years as brands across the country urgently seek to cut haulage emissions in line with the UK’s net zero strategy. Demand in this type of fuel is predicted to increase five-fold over the next five years as the UK’s 2040 ban on the sale of new diesel HGVs approaches. The new station is closely situated to existing customers, such as Royal Mail, Warburtons and Amazon, helping major household brands to slash haulage emissions and align with the UK’s net zero targets. Lidl supermarket is the latest brand to convert its fleets to renewable biomethane. Jason Wild, Distribution and Recycling Consultant of Lidl, said in an online statement: “We are committed to reducing our environmental impact across our entire operations and switching our fleets over to renewable biomethane instead of diesel is a crucial step. CNG Fuels’ new station in Avonmouth is a key location to allow us to make low-carbon deliveries across the Southwest.”

Volunteer Police Cadet Unit Leader Could you make a difference and help shape the lives of the young people in your area? We trust our people and they’re empowered to make decisions. You’ll have the chance to build new skills, gain unrivalled experience and you’ll be valued for what you bring. In this unique role you will have the chance to motivate and support other Cadet Leaders and our volunteer Police Cadets to learn the skills and train under the guidance of our police officers. Our cadets have FUN whilst learning skills… they are a diverse mix of 13-17 year olds, each with lots of enthusiasm and excitement for our organisation and its values. As a Unit Leader you will become the person that ensures all duties and responsibilities required to run a unit successfully are completed by your team of Cadet Leaders. You will make sure that sessions are planned and delivered on a regular basis and oversee the content that gives our cadets a fantastic experience. We do not expect you to undertake all the tasks yourself but you will be comfortable with delegating to your volunteer team and checking that tasks have been completed. This is in addition to inspiring, leading and motivating cadets to support their local community.....

Each group provides an environment for young people where they can learn about roles within policing, support their community and develop valuable life skills such as communication and problem solving. You will be the person that ensures high standards in your group, this includes things such as uniform checks and drill practices. You will need to be comfortable presenting in front of a group of circa 30 cadets and being the person that engages and leads this group We will want you to be responsible for ensuring that the activities of your group are fun and engaging and align with our volunteering strategic objectives. As Unit Leader of your team you will support planning and delivery of an exciting, interesting and balanced programme to give the cadets the opportunity to have fun and learn new skills while taking part in many different types of activities, events and camps to broaden the cadet’s knowledge of policing and the local community. These activities often take place at weekends. Through these groups our Cadet Leaders have a tangible and positive impact on the lives of our young people, our volunteers and our local communities.

A coach

We are currently recruiting for a Unit Leader for our BANES unit, which meets on Tuesday evenings in the Odd Down area of Bath. Our units resumed in person activity in November 2021 and in January of this year the BANES unit welcomed new Cadets. It’s a busy unit with plenty of enthusiastic young people and Leaders who are looking forward to developing their skills.

We do not need you to have policing experience, our existing leaders come from a wide range of backgrounds, and they each bring key elements of their day to day lives into the role.

You will be: A mentor

We ask you to volunteer your own time to lead an inspirational team.

Bristol school working with students to address ‘the feeling of powerlessness’ over Ukraine invasion.

Bristol head teacher Paul Dwyer is urging students to monitor their exposure to social media posts about events in Ukraine to better manage their anxiety levels.

“We also to try to make the point to our young people that we are not experts ourselves, but rather seeking out why this has happened now as far as we understand it.”

Mr Dwyer, head of Redmaids’ High School, The school is using assemblies, current said: “We are helping them recognise that affairs, history and PHSE lessons to help put taking time away from their screens does not the situation into context. mean they are turning their backs on the war. “It’s about making students aware this a fast-changing situation and that social media posts they are exposed to may be misleading, manipulated or just plain lies.”

Mr Dwyer says the school, which teaches girls from three to 18, is approaching the situation in a range of ways and in an age-appropriate manner.

The school’s Year 9s have made ribbons to sell to raise funds for the Moldova Project which is supporting Ukrainian refugees in Moldova; and Year 12s are looking at holding a benefit concert.

“For younger pupils, it's around the how-a nd-the-why of what's going on; they will hear things like nuclear disaster being mentioned and we try to explain how it translates into their reality.

Redmaids’ High School is the oldest existing girls' school in the country, dating back to 1634.

“For older students, we try to address the feeling of powerlessness surrounding everything that is going on and giving them space to ask questions or talk about what they've seen. 14

DUE DILIGENCE – FOR THE SECOND PART IN OUR SERIES

In property circles we are all familiar with the phrase “due diligence” but it is often talked about in terms of “the deal” – the bricks, mortar, facts and figures of the deal. Equally as important but often overlooked is due diligence on the people you are working with. In this, the second part of our series on due diligence, we look at the people puzzle and talk about why checking out people, as well as property deals, is every bit as important.

Google the individual and the company (if there is one)

Check out both company and individual on Companies House

Request details of their background, experience, and track record

Ask to speak to past clients or people who have invested or worked with them

We have all seen the posts on social media, you know the ones, the ones which make those of us who have been in business a while cringe. They are asking for money or JV partners, and they usually talk of amazing deals which “just cannot be missed” and are “only available today”. Further, most of us have come across the self-styled “property gurus,” sharks and unscrupulous people, who are out to con the unsuspecting of their hard-earned cash.

Search for them on social media and online forums

Talk to people in your network – ask about the individual and the company

Do all the usual due diligence on the deal itself – does it stack?

Does their body language match their spoken language – what’s your “sense of them?”

Do you feel comfortable with them?

When things go wrong, as they often will, do you get a sense that they will be solution focused and working side by side with you or will they be finger pointing?

Are they excessively flattering or overly charming?

When you’ve spent time with them (over coffee etc.) how do they treat others?

Are you compromised? More on this on the next page.

What is interesting though, is that when we hear the stories, we always think “this would never happen to me… I would never fall for this” and yet people do and, it’s often not just the newbie investors who fall for the patter and the stories, it’s the experienced ones too. In this article we are going to look at the practical things we should be doing to check out the people in the deal, whilst also looking at some of the psychological principles too. The practical checks and questions you should ask yourself: 20

ON DUE DILIGENCE WE LOOK AT - THE PEOPLE PUZZLE Others things to consider:

In addition to the more tangible criteria above, I am a huge advocate of listening to your gut instinct. The message, which comes from somewhere deep inside the sum of your accumulated experiences, knowledge, and journey through life. Unfortunately, as human beings, we can all be compromised and, when we are, we can over-ride our gut instinct. The best examples of this are from things we do all the time – from that piece of cake we eat when we’re supposed to be watching calories, to the item we bought, that we haven’t budgeted for – we’ve all done it and we are past masters at it! So, how do we prevent being compromised? The answer is in knowing yourself, your triggers and having a plan – someone to sense check with, time to stop and think, a network to bounce ideas off. Some of the highly charged emotions, which make us override our gut instinct are: •

Excitement

Greed

Desperation

Fear

Time – many successful transactions and partnerships are built over time. Are you being coerced into moving too quickly because a deal is “only available today” or does it feel as though someone is trying to short circuit the natural flow and rhythm of the relationship? Ask yourself what’s the urgency? Why do I need to decide now? What will be different tomorrow?

Influence v manipulation – know the difference between the two. Who benefits?

Is one party over reliant on the other and is the partnership equitable?

Ethics – do both parties share the same ethos?

Do you like them? We touched on this before. Property Investors that we talk to are often surprised when we say that we don’t work with people we don’t like. If you don’t like someone, then your instincts are trying to tell you something, in our experience, you ignore them at your peril – several decades of business has taught us this one!

Last, but not least, if it feels too good to be true, the chances are that it is! Take the time you need to assess, sense check and stop, look and listen. If something still doesn’t feel right, then move on, there is always another deal and lots of super ethical people out there to partner with, that will feel right! www.kpa.co.uk

Only you will know how you will feel, when you are in the grip of one of these emotions. When you feel that you may be, it’s time to stop, think, evaluate, and maybe sense check with someone outside the “deal” that you know and trust. 21

Diligent Data Disposal from Byteback

We have all owned a Mobile Phone, PC, Laptop or tablet that has come to the end of its useful life. This may be because it is broken, too old to run the applications we want or, or we've updated it with a shiny new one. Perhaps you've considered selling the item or passing it on to a friend or family member but have you thought about how to properly dispose of all the personal and private data that it holds?

PCs and Laptops are a little more complicated. The only way to be sure that nobody can access your data is to remove the hard drive (your local computer shop may be able to help you) and either keep it safe or destroy it with a big hammer!

With this data, someone may be able to identify your name, address, friends and family, employment and education history, tax numbers and bank details. In the wrong hands this information could do more than cause you embarassment. It could lose you money or even result in legal issues such as identify theft. So what can you do? When you finish using your device it's important to remember to remove your Google or Apple account information and re-set the item back to factory defaults. This should ensure that even if the device is re-used, your data will be gone. 26

If this all sounds too complicated there are specialist IT recycling companies who can take these devices off your hands and safely and securely recycle them, ensuring they don't end up in landfill, and permanently destroy your personal data. Visit https://www.byteback.it/

CITY AND PORT OF BRISTOL BOWLING CLUB Which day of the year do bowlers look forward to most? The answer is ---- the day that the green opens for the new season and this year at the City and Port Club it is --Monday 11th April. The green keeper has been hard at work through the Autumn and Winter to create a surface that is good to bowl on and ready for opening day. The 2022 season will see a return to something like normal following two seasons of restrictions caused by the pandemic. More than 40 Mixed Friendly games will be played on Wednesdays and at week-ends from Mid-April until the first week-end in October. The Monday evening Club League will run with four teams as it did last season and they will once again compete for both the league and the knock out competition trophies.

28

The Bristol Men’s and Ladies Leagues will return to real competition this season with promotion and relegation and presentation of trophies at the end of the season. Leagues did operate in 2021 but on the basis that nobody went up or down and nobody won a trophy. In addition to competing in the league the men will play in the Gloucestershire Two Rink Competition and the ladies will play in the inter club competition --- one rink played at home and one away with much communicating taking place between clubs at the two greens. A number of individual players within the club will compete in County Competitions --- both Gloucestershire and The City and County of Bristol organised ones --- this coming season. There are more entries this year than in recent previous years. David Hinksman and Carol Green will play in their respective Champion of Champions competitions. David, along with Ken Davies will play in the Gloucestershire four wood singles competition. Ken will partner Bill

Hatherall in the City and County of Bristol Pairs as will David Hinksman who’s partner will be Howard Surman. The club is keen to increase membership numbers this season and is once again offering free try bowling sessions predominantly on Tuesday evenings but also on other occasions by arrangement. Up to three free sessions are allowed for each new bowler enabling them to have ample time to decide if bowling is the game for them. All equipment is supplied and the club has qualified coaches who will be on hand to offer help and advice. If you would like to arrange a session please call David Hinksman on 07932387217. Sessions will start early in May. Last season saw children and young people bowling on the green using special small coloured woods. This was very successful and it is hoped to build on it in the season to come. There will once again be sessions for children and young people on Tuesday and sometimes Wednesday evenings from 6pm. The club also hopes to provide sessions for children who come to the School Holiday Activities at the PBA Social and Sports Club once again this year. Two very successful sessions were run last summer. Families will be welcome to come to the sessions for children and young people --- bowling is The Sport for All --- anybody can become a bowler. The series of Winter season social events continued with a Beetle Drive on February 20th. More than twenty bowlers, family and friends braved a rather stormy Sunday night to play twelve games of Beetle and try their luck on the Tombola Table. Bill Hatherall was Beetle Champion for the second time this winter ---- Mervyn White was runner up. Thursday April 7th will see the excellent David Salt Big Band playing at the PBA Social and Sports Club for the first time since 2019. They will play traditional dance band music and songs from the shows for two hours starting at 8.30pm. Tickets are available at the Social and Sports Club or from David Hinksman on 07932 387217 at £6 each ---- this is a show not to be missed. If you would like to learn more about the club and its activities or find out how to join contact David Hinksman on the number above.

MISTAKES TO AVOID WHEN SPRING CLEANING YOUR CAR We all know it doesn’t hurt to give your car a good spring cleaning every so often. This not only makes you thoroughly proud of your nice clean car but also gets rid of any ground in dirt that builds up over time. But, mistakes can be made on when to actually begin the process of doing your deep cleaning or spring cleaning. Our guide will also advise you on when to never wash your car.

UPHOLSTERY

If you have either leather or cloth seats, it’s most important not to leave them to not have a build -up of grime and dirt. This by no means never looks pleasant and neither is it hygienic or nice and comfortable to sit on. It’s always advisable when cleaning leather and cloth seats to never use any household disinfectant such as bleach, which will ruin the overall appearance of most materials. The two basic rules to follow:

LEATHER SEATS

Never soak your seats completely and the best natural cleaning solution is white vinegar, mixed in hot water and a dash of washing-up liquid. Once your seats have fully dried, apply a reputable leather conditioner to increase the look and longevity of your leather car seats. 30

CLOTH SEATS

Firstly as you would normally do, give your cloth seats a good vacuum clean, and like before, use a combined solution of hot water, white vinegar, and a dash of washing up liquid. Then scrub the solution thoroughly into the fabric with a soft brush to liven up the fabric.

WHEELS FIRST

It’s normally the recommended practice of most professional car washers to wash the dirtiest part of the car, the wheels. The practice is to use a high-pressure washer to get rid of most of the dirt. Then you can start the hand cleaning process of applying a wet sponge to wipe each tyre and wheel alloy clean.

HEAT IS BAD

The best advice we can give you and one of the biggest mistakes most car owners make is to wash their car on a hot day, or with the engine still running. This can severely affect the finish of your car once you have completed the wash. Washing your car in hot heat means you will quickly dry the soap you have applied at the start of your car wash, causing water marks all over your car. This doesn’t make it any easier to successfully wash your car within the normal time ranges. Never wash your car until the engine has fully cooled and when doing so, try and do it in the shade if temperatures are on the hot side.

Your garden in April

Spring should be well under way this month with daffodils in full flow, their bright flowers enough to cheer up any day. Blossom trees will be blooming and fresh growth will be appearing on plants everywhere. “April showers’ are common but don’t be deceived by sudden burst of rainfall – you may need to start watering plants more regularly on dry, bright and windy days. With longer days and stronger sunshine growing conditions are continually improving and the warmer weather will give us all the opportunity to get busy in our gardens.

Sow hardy annuals

Hardy annuals are plants that can be sown from seed in the open ground. Get them off to an early start by sowing in pots or modules. Modular trays are also handy for sowing summer bedding plants such as marigolds, lobelia and petunias. Label each seed tray and once they are growing put them outside when the weather is warm day and night. 36

Support climbers

Climbing plants should be growing rapidly now, so will need ample support for new growth. Extend or replace trellis as necessary or add more wire to archers and tripods. New shoots will need to be gently encouraged sideways as they grow. This will send vital growth hormones doing the length of the shoot rather than just to the tip and so will encourage flowering all over the plant.

Plant of the month Rhododendron The rest of the garden will also be growing well now, so if you have been putting off carrying out any major pruning then now is the time to bite the bullet and get it done. Trees, shrubs and hedges should be cut back now before birds begin to nest.

Care for your lawn

The lawn will need regular mowing from now until autumn. Get some maintenance carried out to your lawn mower to ensure it stays in good running order – at the very least your mower blades should newly sharpened ready for regular use. Keep the edges of the lawn tidy after moving with a sharp pair of shears or a lawn edger. Don’t forget to give the lawn a spring feed after mowing if you haven’t got around to doing it yet. If a more drastic approach is needed to spruce up your lawn, sowing seeds for new lawns or over seeding dead patches can be carried out from midApril onwards.

Why should you plant them?

Ancient Greek meaning “Rose tree’ the rhododendron family includes azaleas. These stunning shrubs flower in all sorts of vibrant colours and can help brighten those difficult dark spots in your garden. Rhododendrons are grown for their spectacular flowers usually borne in spring, although some – the deciduous rhododendron or azaleas have good autumn colour.

How should you plant them?

In the wild rhododendrons are woodland plants, so they prefer dappled sunshine and can manage well in shade. They like plenty of water however will not do well in boggy or badly draining soil, so drainage is key. Plant in autumn or spring and use ericaceous compost.
