The Castle Walk Blaise Estate is a Grade II listed historic landscape with recorded human activity dating back 2,000 years. It became a pleasure park’ to a variety of wealthy private owners and has been influenced through the landscape designer Humphrey Repton. It was purchased by the Corporation of Bristol in 1926 for £20,175.

The Walk Start at Blaise Cafe. Walk towards the Blaise Castle House, along surfaced path with play area on left hand side. At path junction near house bear right onto path leading slightly down hill, continue on surfaced path leading down into the gorge, until you reach a set of steps on the right hand side. Take the steps up to the Castle. After a short distance on the right hand side you will come to a limestone pavement rock formation, known as the Giant’s Footprint. Carry on up path, passing Butcher’s Cave on the right.
The Castle This Gothic sham castle, designed and built in 1766 by Robert Mylne for Thomas Farr, was used as a summer house for entertaining guests and viewing the passage of trade ships along the Bristol Channel and into the mouth of the river Avon. When fire destroyed the ornate internal wood panelling and floors in 1954, the building fell into disrepair. The Friends of Blaise were formed to raise public interest and funding, which led to the buildings structural restoration in 1982.
There are two view points; the first located on the South Bastion, takes in Sea Mills, Leigh Court and Leigh Woods. The top of this path is known as Lover’s Leap, where you can see Stoke Bishop, and Sneyd Park and in the distance Dundry. At Lover’s Leap the Castle will come into view. With your back to the Castle turn left and head towards the path leading from the information board into the woods. Follow this path on a gradual descent, then either head down the steps on the right hand side for a short cut onto the parkland, or continue over small rise passing Lover’s Leap Robbers Cave on the left hand side. Continue following this path, down a slight descent and turn right onto Castle Hill Drive. Continue onto main field and back to Cafe. Why not end your walk here with a freshly made coffee and slice of homemade cake. Open daily serving hot and cold snacks, drinks and a large variety of ice cream.
Robber’s Cave Constructed with large rustic local limestone blocks over shallow excavated hole to serve as a feature for carriage drive to the castle. 5

Weston Air Festival to return next summer After a two-year absence due to the Covid pandemic, North Somerset Council is delighted to announce the return of Weston Air Festival to Weston-super-Mare seafront next summer. The two-day event, which will also include Armed Forces Day celebrations as well as dazzling air displays, will take place over the weekend of Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 June. In 2019 when the Air Festival last took place the event featured displays from the Red Arrows and the Battle of Britain Memorial Display amongst others and attracted an estimated 200,000 people over the two days. "There is no doubt that before the pandemic the Air Festival had become one of the South West region’s flagship events and of huge importance to the local economy," said Cllr Mark Canniford, executive member for placemaking and economy at North Somerset Council. 16
I am thrilled that we are able to bring such a brilliant spectacle back to Weston seafront and beach lawns again next year for both local and national audiences to enjoy." The 2022 Air Festival will again be managed on the council's behalf by Richmond Event Management (REM). Ben Hardy, managing director at REM, said: “We were originally contracted in 2018 to deliver Weston Air Festival and develop the offer as part of the council’s placemaking and destination marketing plans. We deliver largescale, major public events for local authorities across the UK and, whilst we enjoy every single one of them, it’s really nice for us to deliver something on our home turf!”

First images released of new train station at Brabazon
YTL Developments and Network Rail have unveiled the first computer-generated images of the planned train station at Brabazon, which is scheduled to be submitted for planning this month. Brabazon will be a new neighbourhood for Bristol, centred around the YTL Arena Bristol. The station at Brabazon – currently known as Filton North – will connect the new neighbourhood and YTL Arena Bristol to Bristol Temple Meads in less than 15 minutes once it is completed as part of MetroWest Phase 2. Network Rail will be submitting the detailed planning application for the station in August. Subject to approval, Network Rail are expected to begin construction in 2022, with the station then scheduled to be operational in 2023. YTL Arena Bristol is scheduled to open its doors for the first time in 2024. YTL Developments is contributing more than £1m to the cost of the railway station, which forms part of an integrated transport plan for Brabazon. The new rail station will connect with the MetroBus as it passes through Brabazon, allowing journeys across North Bristol by public transport. The station will also link to the network of walking routes and cycle paths planned for the neighbourhood. 18
Details of the station come just a few weeks after YTL Developments appointed consultants to develop designs for Brabazon Park, which will be 200m West of the new station and directly in front of YTL Arena Bristol. The new park, which is expected to open to the public in 2024, is set to be the largest new urban public park in the South West for 50 years. The first two, three and four bedroom homes and one and two bedroom apartments at Brabazon – in a phase known as The Hangar District – are also under construction approximately 300m to the north of the new station. The very first residents moved in in May this year. Seb Loyn, director at YTL Developments, said: “Investing in public transport and active travel is a key part of the vision to ensure Brabazon becomes a thriving new neighbourhood for Bristol. “With our first homes now selling fast, the new rail station due to be operational by 2023 and then Brabazon Park and the YTL Arena Bristol due to open in 2024, progress is well underway to deliver on that vision.”

Can community speed watch volunteers really give drivers a speeding ticket?
This week we had a call from a reader who received a letter in the post dated June 2021 regarding a speeding accusation, he asked us if we could do some research about CSWV and are they enforceable by law. Well here we go. Community speed watch volunteers carry out a role in helping the fight against dangerous drivers who speed in residential areas, but what powers do they have? Here’s all you need to know.
What is community speed watch? This is a scheme that allows volunteers to monitor the speed of vehicles passing through their community.
So what’s the point, if tickets can’t be issued? While penalties can’t be issued, officers will act if speed watch volunteers repeatedly report a vehicle to the cops. Each force is different, but, typically, police will act after two reports of a vehicle speeding In such a case the owner of the vehicle will be sent an official letter reminding them of the law. If three letters are sent, the force will carry out further investigation.
What if a driver is caught driving at excessive speed?
How do community speed watch volunteers monitor the speed of drivers?
Most of the community speed watch activity will take place in residential areas, with speed limits of 30-40mph, so driving at excessive speed is a serious offence. If a vehicle is reported for such an ‘offence’ the local police force is likely to take the case further with a ‘strongly-worded’ letter. Prosecution will not be possible from the speed watch team’s recording.
What happens to the details then?
Will that mean motorists who drive excessively fast will get away with it? No. Many forces say they will actively ‘target’ repeat offenders for ‘enforcement’. Make sure you’re up to date with the new speeding fines that came into force April 2017
Volunteers use hand-held devices that tell them the speed at which drivers are travelling through their ‘patch’. When a driver is going a set amount above the speed limit – typically around 10% – the vehicle’s registration, make, model and colour are recorded. A spreadsheet of the offenders’ details is then passed to the local police force, who are likely to also add them to a national database.
Will the driver get a ticket?
These schemes are predominantly about education, meaning no speeding tickets will be issued. Additionally, most schemes use equipment that is not of the correct specification, so issuing a penalty would not be possible on a legal footing. 20
When and where can the speed watch volunteers operate?
The volunteers must operate in a location that has been approved by the police. They must also only operate during daylight hours.

New community group for all ages and backgrounds launching in Bristol New community group for all ages and backgrounds launching in Bristol Leading housing association Sovereign has given £1,010 funding to support the launch of a new community inclusion group in Bristol. Safe Space, created by Sovereign’s Youth Panel member Jess, launches at Easton Community Centre on Tuesday 7 September, from 2.30pm-4.30pm and is open to people of all ages and backgrounds living in the area. Together, the group will organise fun activities, including a range of arts and crafts, board games, "Taskmaster"-type challenges adapted from the TV show, cooking and baking. Jess said: “According to the Office for National Statistics, levels of loneliness in Great Britain have increased, with 7.2% of people surveyed between October 2020 and February 2021 saying they felt lonely “often” or “always”. 22
“I realised there are a lot of people out there who have been really isolated, especially following the pandemic. Safe Space is somewhere anyone can come along to, to find friendly faces and a bit of community compassion. “The community centre is fully accessible and people can come for as little as ten minutes or as long as the whole session.” Daisy Mummery, Sovereign’s Community Development Officer, added: “It's been great working with Jess to develop her idea to start up Safe Space. “I'm excited to see where Safe Space goes in the future. Jess is a huge asset to Sovereign’s youth panel and the whole community.”

CITY AND PORT OF BRISTOL BOWLING CLUB Ken Davies arrived at Bristol St.Andrews Bowling Club just before 6pm on Tuesday 17th August knowing that a win over his opponent that evening would take him to a County SemiFinal of this seasons Champion of Champions Competition. Having scored a famous victory over Dave Shaw in the previous round he now faced a very good and competitive bowler in Graham Hudd of GB Britton.
A number of club members had made their way to St.Andrews to support Ken and they were encouraged by what was a fairly even start to the game with shots being traded and neither player racing into a big lead. But, it was Graham a very accurate bowler who found the weight and line to move ahead, scoring the maximum four shots on more than one occasion. He reached the required twenty one shots to Kens eleven and will now play at Cotswold on August 29th against the winner of the Stroud Section and the winner of that game will play in the county finals in September.
The establishment of a Junior Section at the club has made good progress with regular Tuesday Evening sessions seeing more than children of school age and one a little older attending, and some of them showing a real interest in playing the game of bowls. It was good to see mums joining in on occasions to add to the number and also to the fun. In addition to this the club provided bowling sessions for children attending the Holiday Play Scheme being run at the main Social and Sports Club. Ten children per session ---- with Play Scheme Leaders --- came to the green and were quickly learning the basics of bowling.

Bowling will continue until the end of September. Club Competition Finals will be played over the week-end 18/19 September. The delayed Winter Bowling Break will run from October 3rd until the 8th at the Toorak Hotel in Torquay. This year’s AGM will be held on Thursday 21st October in the Ballroom of the City and Port of Bristol Club. Hog HQ joins Wapping Wharf's growing community
Bristol independent business The Jolly Hog has moved its headquarters, known as Hog HQ, to the city's harbourside neighbourhood, Wapping Wharf. The Jolly Hog is a Bristol-based, family-run business, which sells award-winning British outdoor-bred, RSPCA Assured sausages and bacon, with its brand now available in major supermarkets including Asda, Tesco's, Sainsbury's, Waitrose and Ocado. With a team of 13, including owners, co-founders and brothers Max, Josh and Olly Kohn, the business also has a much-loved eatery, Pigsty, which is already based at Wapping Wharf within CARGO, a popular hub of independent businesses housed in converted shipping containers. The Jolly Hog has now moved its base into its newly fitted out office, also made of converted shipping containers, along Museum Street next to CARGO 2. Having previously been located on Gloucester Road, Hog HQ moved into its events storage space in Frampton Cotterell at the onset of the pandemic, not anticipating its stay would last 18 months at the time. The Jolly Hog's exciting new HQ office at Wapping Wharf provides an open plan workspace for staff, a board room for meetings and kitchen, which will be used for food photography and product development, as well as space for entertaining. Max Kohn, co-founder of The Jolly Hog, said: “We are really looking forward to being in Wapping Wharf, the atmosphere down there is amazing. It’s also a great food hub and inspiration for our retail new product development.

The office itself is looking just how we wanted it, and you can hardly miss us if you walk past! The new location will aid our retail business alongside Pigsty and we are really looking forward to that. Thanks to Stuart and the team at Umberslade for all their help too." Stuart Hatton, managing director at Umberslade, the developer of Wapping Wharf, said: "We are delighted to welcome Hog HQ to Wapping Wharf. Pigsty has been part of the CARGO community since the very early days; it's been great to see this wonderful independent business go from strength to strength over the years and now expand its presence within the neighbourhood. We wish the whole team all the best with the exciting next chapter in their Jolly Hog adventures." The Jolly Hog was originally founded in 2007 when Olly was playing rugby for the Harlequins and was out of action with an injury. With extra time on his hands and an extra large love of sausages, Olly started making his own using a sausage-making machine bought for him as a present. Josh and Olly joined forces and The Jolly Hog was born with Max helping with events initially before moving back to Bristol from London in 2011. The rest is history - and to this day the sausage making machine is kept in Pigsty at Wapping Wharf. Hog HQ is based in the unit formerly home to the Wapping Wharf Living marketing suite. Wapping Wharf is in the heart of Bristol's historical and cultural quarter, with its tree-lined pedestrian and cycle route, Gaol Ferry Steps, providing an important connection between south Bristol to the city centre. Now home to over 40 independent businesses, many of which are based within CARGO, Wapping Wharf is home to some of the city's best independent restaurants, shop, cafes and lifestyle businesses.

Construction on Bristol’s HWRC is progressing well
Construction of a new household waste and recycling centre (HWRC) in Bristol is to take a step further this week, as a purpose-built reuse shop is set to be installed. The Recycling Centre, based on Hartcliffe Way in the south of the city, will be managed by the council own waste contractor, Bristol Waste Company. Due to open to the public next year, the site was visited by Bristol mayor Marvin Rees yesterday (24 August) to see how the works are progressing.
Site
According to the Bristol Waste Company, the site based on Hartcliffe Way will be one of the “largest in the region”.
He continued: “We are proud to be the leading English Core City for recycling, but we know there is always more that can be done, and this new facility will help us to reach our ambitious recycling targets. “Part of our commitment to making Bristol cleaner and greener is further reducing the amount of waste that is sent to landfill, and this centre will help us to achieve this goal by supporting people to recycle, repair and reuse – giving pre-loved items a second life.”

Your Garden In September
Summer is coming to an end with the month of September generally being a cooler month than August. The days are becoming noticeably shorter, but the weather is, however usually warm and calm, giving us the ideal conditions to plant trees and shrubs. It’s a great time of the year to appreciate those long lasting plants that flower into autumn and if you have a fruit or vegetable patch you’ll be busy reaping the rewards of a hopefully successful harvest. Don’t forget - if you look forward to a great spring display of colour then now is the time to buy and plant your bulbs. Whatever you’re doing in your garden this month, be sure to make the most of the remaining warmth while you can.
Divide herbaceous perennials September is a good month to lift and divide summer-flowering herbaceous perennials. Most perennials need to be divided every three to five years as the plant can become too big for the border and become congested. Dividing will invigorate the plant and help to improve flowering and overall shape next year. Gently dig out the plant you want to divide, being careful not to damage the roots. Use a garden fork to separate the plant into two then shake of any excess soil and replant in your chosen spot as soon as possible. 38
Take Perennial cuttings Take cuttings of perennials such as fuchsia, salvia, verbena, penstemon and chrysanthemum. It’s a great way to increase the number of plants you have for your summer display and there’s something really satisfying about seeing plants grow that you’ve created yourself. Find some strong growth that hasn’t flowered this year and cut a 5 - 10 cm stem just below a leaf joint. Strip the leaves from the lower stem and leave one or two pairs at the top. Dip the end in hormone rooting powder and plant in pots of compost mixed with grit. Leave the pots somewhere bright and warm until rooted then re-pot into larger containers. Over winter in the greenhouse or conservatory. Plant spring flowering bulbs Bulbs make a fine display planted in containers and borders, especially Tulips, Snowdrops and Daffodils. They are one of the easiest and most rewarding plants to grow and are great for adding colour to spring borders.
Tulips come in a huge variety of colours and bloom at a time of year when there is very little colour in the garden. snowdrops, appearing before the tulips, are one of the earliest flowering plants in the garden. When the snowdrops begin to fade, the daffodil begins to appear, with its cheery shades of yellow brightening the borders.
Looking good this month Hebe ‘Bowles’s Variety’ Why should you plant them? Hebe ‘Bowles’s Variety’ is an evergreen, rounded shrub with ovate, glossy green leaves that make a very attractive plant for borders and containers. Easy to care for, this Hebe is drought tolerant and flowers prolifically in summer. How should you plant them ? The variety of Hebe flowers best when planted in full sun. the addition of a good quality compost when planting is essential to prevent the roots becoming too dry. After flowering, sheer back dead flower stems to keep the plant looking full.
