Avon and Somerset Police and the Role of a Special Constable

The last Police Officer you saw could have been a Special Constable from Avon and Somerset Police

In their day job they may have been leading a project to build the new school close to you, driving the train you took on your commute to work, working self-employed from home during the day or answering the call you placed to book your travel insurance for your break away. Our volunteers come from all walks of life. One of our Special Inspectors Kelly MacBryde gives an insight to why she joined the organisation. I’ve been a Special for 14 years, and the time has flown by! I'm enjoying it just as much now as I did when I first joined! I found out about the Special Constabulary when I saw a "Could You" advert on the TV and was interested to find out more. I was working in an office and I thought that doing something completely different would be a good idea (and it was!). The idea of working as part of a larger team, learning new skills and taking myself out of my comfort zone all appealed to me.

4

I'd always thought that Special Constables just policed low key events but as a response officer in Bristol, I attend the same jobs as my regular colleagues. As a Special Constable, you never know what's going to happen and jobs rarely turn out to be what you're expecting, you often formulate a plan of how to deal with an incident and then have to change it completely when you get there. I thought I might miss going down the pub on a Friday night but now I'd rather volunteer for a shift, I could end up with a suspect in custody or helping someone having a mental health crisis get to A&E. I love the camaraderie and the fact that everyone looks out for one another, you work with so many different people, there's rarely a dull moment! Why not come along and make a difference, to support the communities in which we all live and work. Mother's Day is important so treat them well Mother’s Day is an important event every year, but particularly this year, as many of us will have spent almost a year away from ours by now. That’s a year of missed coffee dates, missed home-cooked meals, missed hugs and — for a large chunk of us — missed childcare opportunities. And so, in 2022, it feels more important than ever to show our mums just how much we love and appreciate them. This year, Mothering Sunday falls on March 27th (put it in your diary now) and this year we’re determined to head into the day calm and confident in our gift choice, rather than worried that the last-minute gift we picked out some favourites. Buying presents for your parents can be intimidating, Our advice? Go with your gut. Though it feels a bit cliché to get your mum a candle, book, perfume or a pair of slippers, chances are, she’ll love it (who wouldn’t?).

BRISTOL LIGHT FESTIVAL RETURNS FOR 2022

Bristol Light Festival will return this year to fill the city with light and colour, and showcase Bristol as the vibrant, playful and creative city that we know and love. From 1st - 6th March, Bristol Light Festival will feature six world premier works, brand new for Bristol, alongside some of the best of the UK’s talent, all making their Bristol debut at carefully selected locations across the city centre. Visitors can wander and explore the city’s streets to see the light art works come to life and enjoy Bristol’s wonderful retail and hospitality businesses along the way. Bristol Light Festival will appear along some of the city centre's well-trodden paths as well as in some unexpected locations. At each spot visitors will be able to see, experience and play with installations that are visiting the South West for the first time. This year’s festival will benefit from a successful grant application from the Arts Council England which will support the delivery of a selection of daylight and green energy installations, adding a new dimension to the event and the opportunity for those visiting and working in the city to experience some of the artworks throughout the day. By day and night, the event is the perfect opportunity for friends, colleagues, and families to meet.

This is the second festival brought to you by Bristol City Centre Business Improvement District (BID), supported by 760 local businesses. This year's festival is also in partnership with Redcliffe & Temple BID, Arts Council England, Bristol’s City Centre & High Streets Recovery and Renewal programme, which is funded by Bristol City Council and the West of England Combined Authority’s Love our High Streets project and Cabot Circus. Festival is being curated and produced by Bristol-based Creative Director, Katherine Jewkes.

10

Everything is free to attend and open to everyone across the full week. We can’t wait to welcome you to explore Bristol through light.

Bristol honours its hospitality heroes Hundreds of people attended a glittering gala to honour Bristol’s hospitality heroes and celebrate success after one of the most challenging periods ever for their businesses.

“Many of the sponsors have already agreed to support the 2023 Night of the Stars, which is fantastic news and a welcome vote of confidence for all our hard-working teams.

The Bristol Hoteliers Association (BHA) hosted its fourth Night Of The Stars spectacular to recognise those who went above and beyond in their work to support the city’s hospitality industry.

“I would like to congratulate all the award winners and everyone else who was nominated, for the amazing work they have done in the most challenging of times.

The event did not take place in 2021 because of the pandemic but more than 300 people attended Ashton Gate in a strong show of support for their sector.

“But in a sense, everyone in the room was a winner, and it was wonderful to all come together, share our success stories, and look ahead to a brighter future.”

Raphael Herzog, Chair of the BHA, said: “This has been a very tough 18 months for hospitality businesses and we were so excited to finally be able to celebrate success.

The award-winners were not the only people who had cause to celebrate the Night of the Stars; the event also raised £1,237.50 for Childrens Hospice South West through a raffle.

“People are the most important asset in our industry and business, and it was an honour and a privilege to be able to come together again at last and recognise the many hospitality stars working in Bristol.

Corporate Parnterships Fundraiser Amanda Gallagher said: “It was truly wonderful to see so much support for CHSW in the room and the money raised could pay for over 60 hours of care for the families we support, at home, in our hospices and virtually.

“The judges were highly complementary of the nominations, which were all first class. We would also like to express our immense gratitude to our sponsors, without whom we would not have been able to stage this event and give our hospitality heroes the recognition they have thoroughly earned. 12

“We would like to say a huge thank you to the Bristol Hoteliers Association for their support.”

Moon calendar 2022 mark your diaries for new moons, full moons, and lunar eclipses

The moon calendar 2022 is filled with all the dates of new moons, full moons, lunar and solar eclipses—and which sign of the zodiac they fall in. In light of the gravitas of these events in astrology, it's definitely worth marking them down in your calendar ahead of time.

Here is a list of the dates through the year that are significant to moon gazers and the superstitious.

Your Moon sign is an indicator, in your astrology birth chart, of your deepest desires and needs. On top of what it shows in our chart, the moon is also an important factor in the astrological events in 2022.

APRIL New moon—Friday, April 1st Full moon—Saturday April 16th New moon—Saturday, April 30th Solar eclipse—Saturday, April 30th

The moon and the lunar cycle have been a source of fascination since humanity began. Many still believe that the lunar cycle can affect moods and how people behave—often with a more negative connotation. Move over Mercury in retrograde 2022—we'll get to you later.

MAY Full moon—Monday, April 16th New moon—Monday, May 30th

In fact, words like ‘looney’ and ‘lunatic’, which are insensitive and outdated words often given to people with mental illness, have their origins from ‘luna’—the Latin word for moon. And in fairness, before humanity knew the science behind the lunar cycle and eclipses— they had the capacity to cause widespread anxiety and panic.

JULY Full moon—Wednesday, July 13th New Moon—Thursday, July 28th

Even during the information age, any staunch disbelievers in astrology could find themselves all aquiver if they took a deep dive into the royal family’s link to eclipses. Spooky correlations aside, the cycle itself offers an opportunity to take pause, meditate, think about what you’d like to leave behind, and what you’d like to focus on moving forward. So when you’re making your plans, as well as checking out your 2022 horoscope, you had better consider when to schedule full moon rituals to help you manifest bliss this year. 14

MARCH New Moon—Wednesday, March 2nd Full Moon—Friday, March 18th

JUNE Full moon—Tuesday, June 14th New moon—Wednesday, June 29th

AUGUST Full moon—Friday, August 12th New moon—Saturday, August 27th SEPTEMBER Full moon—Saturday, September 10th New moon—Sunday, September 25th OCTOBER Full moon—Sunday, October 9th New moon—Tuesday, October 25th Solar eclipse—Tuesday, October 25th NOVEMBER Full moon—Tuesday, November 8th Lunar eclipse—Tuesday, November 8th New moon—Wednesday, November 23rd DECEMBER Full moon—Thursday, December 8th New moon—Friday, December 23rd

DUE DILIGENCE – QUESTIONS YOU SHOULD For the first part of our series on Due Diligence, we look at what questions you should ask your Letting Agent. However, you choose yours, albeit a household name, fancy logo or personal recommendation, remember that ignoring red flags because you want to see the good in people or want to short circuit the process will cost you later. Ask those all-important questions now! How safe is my money? Letting or property management agents, in England, who hold clients' money, must join a "client money protection scheme". This is important because it means that your money and your tenants' money is always protected! Agents must: Hold clients money in an account with a bank or building society authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority. Get a certificate confirming membership of the scheme and provide it to anyone who asks, free of charge. Display the certificate in any office where they deal with the public and on their website – there are large fines for non-compliance!

One of the most important aspects of renting your property and somewhere that a good quality Agent can really add value, is tenant selection. Tenant selection is an art form and a good quality Letting Agent will have this process nailed! Once you have the science covered (in terms of right to rent, affordability, referencing etc.) then the art and experience comes into play and, a good Agent here, will be worth their weight in gold. Ask your Agent where they advertise to find good quality tenants, how they appraise them, who they speak with, to ascertain their character - this information is priceless and a good and experienced Letting Agent will happily share this information readily with you.

Show me the stats! Good, local, agents are experts in their field and should have area, tenant type, local employer, rental, and demographic specific information to hand, always and, the readiness of this information, will indicate whether they have their finger on the pulse or not. In addition to questions about their business (how many properties they manage, how many members of staff manage them, their void rate, their level of bad debt and how many full or partial deposits they have had to keep to offset damage caused by tenants or non-payment of rent), be sure to ask them for local information like: 20

BE ASKING YOUR LETTING AGENT Procedures and policies

What do their inspections cover? Periodic Inspections are important, yet so many landlords and letting agents are slap-dash and leave things to chance. Inspections should include checks on: • • • •

Simple ways to save money on petrol and diesel as the price goes up!

With fuel prices at an all time high as the cost of living crisis deepens, many people will be looking for quick ways to save money. Petrol jumped to 148.02p per litre last week rising above the previous record high of 147.72p on November 21 last year. Adding to the misery for motorists, diesel costs also rose to a new record high of 151.57 pence per litre. Six simple ways you can save fuel which can ultimately save you money, 1. Be gentle with the accelerator and use a high gear Gentle acceleration is important in fuel-efficient driving and the ‘the biggest secret’ to achieving high miles per gallon is driving in the highest possible gear for your vehicle while staying in the speed limit. Remember that the faster an engine spins, the more fuel it uses. 2. Dress for the weather It may be winter and motorists are more likely to crank up the heating but using the heating and air conditioning uses engine power and therefore fuel consumption. Instead, we advised that motorists dress for the weather. 3. Empty your boot The more weight you’re carrying in your car, the more fuel you’ll be using. 22

4. Having a roof rack According to statistics from the Energy Saving Trust, an empty roof rack will add 16% drag to your car when travelling at 75mph and a roof box will add 39%. Both make your vehicle much less fuel efficient. 5. Keep your car well looked after The RAC suggests that regular maintenance and servicing will improve the efficiency of your car, including making sure your tyres are inflated to the correct pressure. Underinflated and overinflated tyres can affect your fuel economy. 6. Keep moving Slowing down and having to accelerate again uses more fuel, so motorists are advised to drive smoothly and keep their car moving. It’s important to remain in gear as the fuel cut-off switch in a fuel injection engine is then activated, meaning virtually no fuel is used while braking. Driving up hills also destroys fuel economy so motorists are advised to accelerate a little before you reach a hill then ease off as you drive up.

FareShare South West supports food waste reduction policies FareShare South West, an independent part of the FareShare UK network, is the largest food redistribution charity in the region, and works with nfront-line charities, schools and community groups to ensure surplus food reaches those that need it most in our communities.

Milk is the third most waster product in the UK, and predicts this adaptation will save millions of their own pints of milk being discarded each year.

Every year, 250,000 tonnes of food processed, packaged and ready-to-eat is wasted by producers, manufacturers and retailers in the UK supply chain for reasons ranging from inaccurate demand forecasting, packaging errors, damage in transit or retailer rejections. FareShare South West provides a flexible and easy way of working together to ensure good quality surplus food never reaches a bin.

"At FareShare South West, we celebrate any news that food companies have changed their processes to reduce food waste. We and FareShare UK want to see more food following the food waste hierarchy and going to feed people first, before going to animal feed, anaerobic digestion or worst of all, landfill. We are encouraging more South West food companies to ‘do the right thing’ with surplus food - whether that is changing guidelines in store, or giving their in-date, large scale surplus to us at FareShare South West."

As a charity, FareShare South West supports any initiatives by food suppliers to reduce wastage. Recently, the supermarket chain Morrisons announced 90% of their own brand milk will no longer include a 'Use By' date.

The new "Netflix for seniors" that can help reduce loneliness Living Memories Online offers access to hundreds of hours of archive films and newsreels from the 20th Century… ● "Netflix for Seniors" can help older people stuck at home to step back in time, triggering memories and reducing feelings of isolation ● Also helpful for people living with dementia or in residential care to bring back memories and encourage reminiscence with families, friends and carers ● "When I watch these films and chat about them they make me feel younger again", says 84 year old Noelle Ingham

It’s been launched by Living Memories C.I.C., a not-for-profit social enterprise, to reduce isolation and help improve the health and wellbeing of older people. As well as sparking memories, the old films encourage elderly people, including those with dementia, to reminisce with families, friends and carers. These archive films give a fascinating insight into all aspects of life in the past. For a monthly subscription of just £5, individuals, care homes and other organisations can search for films by decade, topic (such as home, travel and work) and subject (eg. fashion, shopping, cars).

They can make a collection of their own favourites, which can be shared with other With millions of vulnerable elderly people users. They can also access online stuck at home and with limited social reminiscence resources to help trigger contact, a new online service could offer them conversations. a valuable lifeline. Brian Norris, founder of Living Memories Dubbed "Netflix for Seniors", Living Memories CIC, says: Online brings memories back to life through archive films and newsreels from the 20th "Archive films are a wonderful way of Century capturing everyday life at home and prompting older people to share memories work as well as important national events. and life experiences. 28

Long-term memory is usually one of their strengths, so reminiscence encourages them to communicate and feel more confident about themselves. Living Memories Online makes reminiscence activity much more widely available. Living Memories was developed by Brian and his wife Leonore after long practical research with older people, including those with dementia. It already publishes DVDs and reminiscence resources and for some time has been running Tea and Memory groups where archive programmes and newsreels are shown to community groups. Brian says: "At the group sessions we found that many older people, including those living with dementia, who had previously been reluctant to talk started to reminisce about their lives and shared experiences, to make new friends and get to know their neighbours." NHS social prescribing nurses in Brian's local area of East Devon started referring people to the sessions, and demand was so high that Brian and Leonore decided to develop Living Memories as an online service that could be used by care homes, local memory cafés and in people's own homes. The pandemic gave added urgency to get their new project up and running nationally. The Abbeyfield Society, a charity which operates over 450 retirement houses across the UK, has already signed up to use Living Memories Online for its residents. It is also partnering with Living Memories to create virtual and live Tea & Memories reminiscence groups around the UK in the communities in which Abbeyfield operates. Abbeyfield Society Chief Executive, David McCullough, said: “The new excellent Living Memories Online streaming service helps us engage older people within our own Abbeyfield homes and also to connect with local communities to reach elderly, lonely people. It is an exemplar of the strategy for people to come together and open up friendships and initiate conversations, particularly in these difficult times of the pandemic. It is exciting to be finding new ways to be creative and to have a positive impact on people’s lives. We know that our residents’ wellbeing is lifted from the testimonies we have received.”

At Abbeyfield Residential House in Tavistock, Devon, they recently ran two Tea & Memories trial sessions using the new Living Memories online platform. Graham Osborn, former Chair of the Abbeyfield Society Trustees in the Devon town ran both sessions. The first, which centred around a film called Marvellous Milk, was for a small group of six residents: “It was a roaring success, with the event almost running itself with just a little direction from me as the residents’ enthusiasm triggered lots of memories which led to others and so on. There was plenty of involvement, laughter and overall enjoyment and after 45 minutes, which went so quickly, we ended for a cup of tea - with milk! "We had nearly a full house of residents present, so there was a vibrant and stimulating environment with much laughter and discussion about the past. The topic from the Living Memories was on a 1958 film excerpt entitled Lovely Launderette. My vice-chair on the House Committee was helping out and I know she was quite surprised at the interaction between residents, some of whom normally are very quiet, but as she said to me afterwards, they came to life when talking about events some 60 years ago." "I encouraged the residents to describe what this reminiscence means to them and they told me how watching the films immediately brings a smile to their faces as they start to remember those ‘good old days'. One told me how "with the demanding challenges we face as we get older it is refreshing and stimulating to be taken back in time and to experience once again individual precious memories of joyful opportunities and adventures - moments that we never wanted to end."

How to Convert a Garage into an extra room

Many of us dream of a home gym, or an extra place to chill out away from the noise and chaos of family members. Others want a place where they can invite friends over and make more noise without disturbing others. Either way, we all wouldn’t turn out an extra room in the house to do whatever we want with. One space in the house we don’t consider is the garage, if yours is just standing stale collecting dust, it might be the perfect solution for you. We’ll look into how to convert a garage into a room with these interesting and inspiring garage conversion ideas. Ask household members Before you begin idealising your perfect garage space, make sure you check with other members of your household that this is okay, maybe ask them if they have any ideas or even want to help you reach your goal! This way there are no arguments and everyone is on the same page, you may even also get the job done quicker. Have a clear-out We’re all somewhat guilty of hoarding. Whether it be clothes you never wear but can’t bear to let go of, or dusty boxes of old toys or arts and crafts. This stage is crucial, as you need to be firm on your choices on what to keep and what to throw away. 30

If your garage is quite full, the harsher you are the better use you’ll get out of a larger and well organised area. Consider donating items in good nick to charity, and disposing of other items such as clothes properly at your nearest clothes bank. Decide what you want your space to be There are endless possibilities when it comes to deciding what you want your new spare room to become. Some of the top garage conversion ideas we love the sound of include: Home gym: Perfect for getting away after a long day and sweating it out, it saves money in the long run as you aren’t tied to a monthly gym subscription, and reduces petrol costs to get there. With Garolla’s insulated garage doors, you don’t have to worry about the winter months, keep up your fitness routine all year round. Games room: No matter your age, we could all have some fun with a games room. A place to keep the Nintendo Wii or other gaming console, a snooker table and darts board, or even just a board games room. This is a great way to dedicate a space where you and your guests can have some fun. Plug in a drinks fridge and you’ll be the most popular host!

Home cinema: Big fan of movies? Convert your home into a cinema room with a large mounted TV screen or projector and a sofa. It doesn’t take much to get a great ambiance. Hook up your screen to some decent speakers and with our roller garage doors being insulated against sound too, you can be sure you don’t disturb the rest of the house when you decide to watch a late-night film. Chill out zone: Feel the need to have an extra living room? Sometimes we need that extra space for some time alone, or if you and your household don’t always like watching the same things. Maybe you need a quiet room to read in or do yoga in the mornings, with Garolla’s thermally efficient garage doors you can be sure to get your meditation on in comfort. Insulate the room Many garages are cool, with concrete floors and walls causing a cold atmosphere, making it hard to relax. Insulate the walls of the garage to keep heat in. There’s no need to insulate your garage opening when you install one of Garolla’s insulated garage doors. This will keep the heat in, and the cold out. Laying down carpet will also help keep your garage from becoming too cold, and using electric heaters in the harsh winter periods can aid further.

Install lighting If you haven’t already got adequate lighting, you should install a new light to match this with your home’s decor, especially if the garage is connected to the rest of the house. Low lighting above a pool table will look sleek and professional. Lamps with an orange and warm tone will help make the environment cosy. Decorate the room Paint the inside of your room to create the perfect atmosphere. Note that light colours brighten a room and make it feel larger and more spacious. Whereas dark colours bring a more closed and intimate feel to the room. Then either lay down carpet over the concrete floor or you can use another material such as laminate or tile for easy cleaning. Add furnishings to complete your room with the appropriate theme.

YOUR GARDEN IN MARCH

Spring is finally here! The warmer and sunnier days during March provide the opportunity for an increasing range of gardening tasks. It’s a great time of the year as new life bursts forth and the garden begins to transform. Preparation of seed beds and borders should be well under the way this month as well as cutting back winter shrubs and generally tidying up the mess that the winter has left behind. Whether you’re preparing for shrubs and bedding plants or sowing seed for vegetables. Once all the tidying is done you’ll be in a better position to plan the seasons planting.

36

The essential gardening jobs for March Sow seeds and plant onion sets, shallots and potatoes. As the soil begins to warm you can start to sow broad beans, salads and sweet peas. If bad weather is forecast, be sure to cover seedlings with clothes to protect them. March is also the time to plant out onion and shallot sets – cover with fleece or netting to protect from birds. Early varieties of potato such as ‘Rocket’ and ‘swift’ , can be planted. If they have been kept in a light and frost-free environments, they should be ‘chitting’ (a slight sprouting from seed potato). Chitting before planting can encourage earlier and heavier cropping.

Feed As the warmer weather promotes fresh growth, a general garden fertiliser should be applied to help boost roots, green foliage and encourage more fruits and flowers from your plants. It can be applied around the base of plants by scattering straight from the box and left to be watered in the rain. Unfortunately, the warm weather will also see weeds start to grow as well. Weeding isn’t the most popular of jobs but its best to pull any that start to appear while they are young to prevent spreading.

Scarify the lawn

Plant of the Month: Pansy/Viola Why Should you plant them? One of the most popular bedding plants, pansies and violas are hardy annuals that have a stunning array of colours to choose from. Bringing the joy of spring to your garden during the colder months, they grow happily in borders or containers as well as providing great ground cover.

How should you plant them?

Plant them in moist, well-drained soil in a spot with good sunlight to encourage Do some lawn preparations before the flowering. tough little plants that are growing season gets well under way. Choose extremely hardy, they prefer cooler tema dry day and give the lawn a rake to remove peratures and need watering regularly. They the remnants of winter before cutting with are also very versatile - plant them in beds, the mower blades set at the highest position. borders, containers and hanging baskets Then aerate with a garden fork or aeration machine. This helps drainage and gets oxygen to the roots. Finally, apply a top dressing of spring lawn feed to add nutrients.
