Are you are planning to go out and enjoy some fireworks on 5 November? Remember, there is nothing worse for a dog than the symphony of fires, banging, bright lights and the general commotion of Guy Fawkes Night. Some dogs can be more sensitive to noise than others but most will get upset by fireworks.
In fact according to Dogs Trust 80% of dogs are frightened by fireworks and 45% of owners say their dogs need sedation to calm their nerves. So it’s important to remember that all that excitement can really stress your dog out and even have longer traumatic affects on him/her.
To make sure that you take all the right measures to help you and your dog enjoy a safe evening we have put together some sound advice which should turn out any worries during Bonfire Night.
Do
5) Sanctuary - Provide a sanctuary for your dog your dog will naturally seek a hiding place so make sure you provide him with a warm blanket in his favourite spot to hide under or a doggy sleeping bag to borrow and snuggle into.
Don’t 1) Try and reassure your dog for being scared – giving your dog any sort of verbal or tactile attention will only encourage fearful behaviour at the wrong time. It is much better to ignore fireworks as they happen. 2) Let your dog outside alone or off the lead – even if your dog doesn’t mind fireworks it’s very dangerous to allow him to roam freely in your garden or in the park. 3) Leave your dog in the house unsupervised or in a strange place. The best place for your dog is in a cosy and familiar environment - home!
1) Walk your dog before it gets dark – make sure your dog is well exercised and has relieved himself before the fireworks begin. 2) Distract - try distracting your dog from the loud noises and bright flashes by playing with a favourite toy or doing some reward based activity. Interacting with your dog during this stressful time will help keep his/her mind off what's going on outside. Turn up the TV or play some music to drown out the loud noises outside. 3) Treat - Try to give your dog a long-lasting treat so that they will spend a good part of the evening chewing and won’t have time to think about the commotion outside. 4) Dog Supplements - If your dog suffers from diarrhea when scared you should try Pooch & Mutt’s Bionic Biotic. There are also specific supplements to help your dog with firework fear , such as skullcap & valerian available from Dorwest or you can try a DAP pheromone diffuser.

Ask the vet Question: My pet is afraid of coming to the vets, what can I do? Answer: A visit to the vets can be overwhelming for our pets. Here are some handy tips to help make the trip less scary for your pet: Visit the vets frequently, even if they’re not unwell. You don’t have to have an appointment, just pop in to weigh them on the scales or even when you’re just picking up a product. Our receptionists are expert treat givers and cuddlers! For cats and rabbits, leave the pet carrier out at home so that they can go in and out as they please and not just associate it as a trip to the dreaded ‘V’ word. Handle your pet at home, almost like a veterinary check, so they are used to being examined i.e. stroke all over, feel their tummy, look at their teeth and inside the ears etc. If your pet is very nervous, tell the receptionist when booking your appointment. Also remind the vet at the beginning of your consultation. You are welcome to leave your pet in the car whilst you are waiting for your appointment or dealing with reception. That way they are not overwhelmed by a busy waiting room. Try to keep cat and small carriers off the floor and if possible sit away from dogs. You can even cover the carrier with a blanket so that they feel extra secure. Don’t forget we can also offer a home visiting service so that your pet can be examined by the vet in the comfort of their own home. Sarah celebrates sharing secrets of success A high-flying weight loss expert from Whitchurch is beaming with pride after attending a prestigious event in Derbyshire to celebrate her achievements as a Consultant and Team Developer for Slimming World, helping people from Whitchurch and Hengrove to lose weight. Sarah is a weight loss Consultant for Slimming World and also a Team Developer for the South Bristol area, meaning that as well as running her own group, she also manages 6 other Consultants in the local area. Sarah was one of around 130 high-achieving Team Developers invited to the company’s ‘Team Developer Thank You Day’, at the organisation’s head office in Alfreton, Derbyshire. As part of the day, which was the first ever ‘Thank You’ event held by the organisation solely for Team Developers, Sarah was invited to discuss best practice and share her tips on delivering a first-class weight management service to members, as well as share ideas for building and managing successful local teams. The guests were also given an insight into Slimming World’s continued growth and plans for the future by Slimming World’s Director of Field Operations Lisa Salmon, and were treated to a healthy Food Optimised banquet in a pop-up marquee. Sarah says: "I was so delighted just to have been invited to the day at Slimming World’s head office – and being there was so inspirational. To have had the opportunity to meet and share ideas with other topperforming weight loss experts and managers was an experience I won’t forget. I learnt so much from the day and there’s no doubt the insight will enable me to improve the support I give to other Consultants in the area so that anyone who attends Slimming World in South Bristol, including the members who attend my Slimming World groups each week, get the very best possible service and support. "I love my job and I feel so passionate about helping people to change their lives by losing weight and learning new habits to be able to keep it off. Having the chance to get together with other top Consultants from across the country to share ideas and experiences is yet another example of the superb support that we get as Slimming World franchisees. There’s no better company to be part of," adds Sarah. "With the health risks posed by rising obesity rates, it’s never been more important that people are able to access regular effective support from people who care and who really understand what it’s like to struggle with weight. There are so many fad diets around so being able to let people know that they can lose weight without going hungry and enjoying everyday foods like pasta, rice, potatoes, fruit and vegetables, lean meat, poultry and fish, and sharing new ways to get active that don’t have to involve going to the gym or taking part in team sports is a great thing. That’s why I’m so proud to represent my groups and my team of Consultants and do whatever I can to support people with managing their weight" To join one of Sarah’s groups, which are held every Tuesday at 9.30am at Hengrove Community Centre, or every Wednesday at 5.30pm or 7.30pm at Bridge Farm School, Whitchurch - either pop along or give Sarah a call on 07879 443888

Would you know you’re emails were hacked? Yes, you would! Your friends would soon start telling you about how they’d received nonsensical emails from you, and people you’d never even heard of (possible businesses you’d once had email contact with) would be sending you “I’m currently out of the Office” mail. It can be embarrassing, but you’ve got to move into action straight away to make sure the damage is limited. 1. Change your email password The very first thing is to change the password associated with that email address. It doesn’t matter whether it was a super powerful 30 character string or ‘password123’ – it’s now in the hands of the hacker. Look for the ‘Settings’ page on the website where you check your email. 2. Check the backup email address A backup address is a second email address to which the email host sends important messages if you get locked out of your account. For instance, you might tell Hotmail to send any ‘lost my password’ emails to your Gmail address. Check in the email settings that this address is one you know and control. Hackers might try to change this, meaning you get totally locked out of your account!
Total PC Support From Martin 6. Update your phone and tablet passwords Finally, you’ll need to check any phones, tablets or other computers which use the passwords you’ve changed, and update them to reflect this. If you follow these simple instructions you’ll stop the hackers in their tracks. As always, if you need any help with any of these things, give me a call and I’ll be happy to assist.
I can answer questions for free over the phone, and call-outs start at only £35.
At Ship Shape Computers, I can help with everything from: Speeding up your PC Setting up new gadgets Transferring Old vinyl, VHS to CD/DVD or MP3
3. Change other account passwords If you have other online accounts with the same email address and password as the hacked email account, then you need to change, at the very least, the password for these too. The hackers who now know your username and password for your email address will immediately try that combination on the other sites, and the problem could spiral. 4. Let your friends know Let your closest friends and family know that you’ve been hacked, and that they should delete any odd emails that they’ve received from you in the last couple of days. Most important of all, tell them not to click on any links in those emails! Simply clicking the link might be enough to steal their login details. 5. Do a couple of security scans Do a security scan with your existing anti-virus suite. Here at Ship Shape Computers I recommend Kaspersky Internet Security, which repeatedly comes top of the comparison lists. Deal with any issues as instructed. Secondly, do a scan with a specialist malware scanner like Malwarebytes Antimalware. This will pick up a lot of things that your antivirus might miss, and will deal with nonvirus things too like cookies and adware.

The hairiest month of the year is upon us! Growing a moustache for November is a national symbol showing awareness of men’s health. The aim is to help men live happier, healthier, longer lives. Together we're tackling some of the biggest health issues faced by men – prostate cancer, testicular cancer, poor mental health and physical inactivity. Why men's health? The state of men’s health is in a crisis. Simply put, men are dying too young. Gender is one of the strongest and most consistent predictors of health and life expectancy. For men, this is not good news. On average, across the world, men die 6 years earlier than women. Moreover, poor mental health affects men more than women: three quarters of suicides are by men. The World Health Organization estimates that 510,000 men die from suicide globally each year. That’s one every minute. The impact of prostate and testicular cancer on lives is substantial, with prostate cancer being the second most common cancer in men worldwide and the number of cases expected to almost double to 1.7 million cases by 2030. Yet this gender-based inequality in health has received little national, regional or global acknowledgement or attention from health policy-makers or healthcare providers. This is exactly why the Movember challenge was formed. This is not just an issue for men. In order to tackle the problem and work towards a world where future generations of men are not faced with the same issues as today, we need to take action at both an individual and community level. This means engaging men and women, businesses, sporting groups, community organisations, governments, health policy makers and healthcare providers in the efforts to reduce the current gender inequality in health outcomes. Get involved: Grow your moustache - Start clean shaven on November 1st. - Grow and groom your moustache for 30 days. - Raise awareness and funds for men's health. - Help men live happier, healthier, longer lives. Take control of your health and look after yourself!
Check in regularly with friends and family It’s all too easy to prioritise other aspects of your life but make sure you put effort into staying connected with friends – for your own benefit but also theirs too. Move The best thing you can do for your health is to stay active. How you MOVE is up to you. Whether it’s a work out one day, a quick jog at lunchtime the next, an hour at the ping-pong table, or an epic bike ride, no MOVE is too big or small. Talk about the big stuff in life The break up of a relationship, loss of a job, financial trouble or becoming a father are big moments in a man’s life that happen to many men. It’s important to recognise the impact of these and know it’s ok to talk about how you’re coping with the change. Knowledge is power Family history is one of the most powerful tools to understanding your health. Family history affects your level of risk for cancer, diabetes, heart disease and stroke, among other illnesses. It all starts with a conversation; talk to your family and take note of illnesses that a direct relative has experienced. Be sure to learn about relatives that are deceased as well. If you notice something, do something You know your body better than anyone. If you notice something isn’t feeling right, don’t put it off and hope that it goes away, go to the doctor and get it checked out. Early detection is the most important factor in treating the big issues. The Movember Foundation is a great charity which is helping this cause. It is a global charity committed to men living happier, healthier, longer lives. Since 2003, millions have joined the men’s health movement, raising £402 million and funding over 1,000 programs focusing on prostate cancer, testicular cancer, poor mental health and physical inactivity. If you would like to make a donation and find out more information please visit: https:// uk.movember.com If you have any questions about your health or concerns please contact Hengrove Pharmacy on 0117 300 5446 or your GP Practice. Remember you can attend a well-man clinic at your surgery for an MOT. Please do this once in a while even you think you are well. Remember male pride can be a powerful barrier against the truth so be honest and really Man Up!

Councilor Surgery Warm Up Bristol Catches a Cold We are all aware that Bristol is the Green Capital of Europe in 2015, it has been really hard to miss with a foggy bridge, boats in Leigh Woods and a host of other ‘amusements’. But one of my great hopes was that Bristol people would benefit from something more substantial. So, when Warm Up Bristol was set up, I hoped “this is it”.. The scheme, as described in the title, was about insulating people’s homes, installing double glazing, cladding where appropriate and generally making homes warmer, reducing fuel bills, and cleaner air for all by reducing emissions.
1)
Prioritise and fix the homes where Health and Safety is at risk, and those with Young Children and Older people who need to be warm.
2)
Then complete the rest as speedily as possible
3)
Re-pay people’s deposits and find out how much more was paid over to Climate Energy (who had been seeking more payments right up to the day they went into administration)
Sad to say that a couple of months ago, my coCouncillor Rhian Greaves and I received two complaints, one about the standard of work and one about the time Warm Up Bristol was taking. Then the news burst in the City Council last week that Climate Energy, the key contractor, has gone into administration, leaving work unfinished and people substantially out of pocket. In order to find out the extent of the damage to homes and financially, a neighbouring Councillor, Cllr Afzal Shah and I called an urgent meeting on Tuesday 13th October at Easton Community Centre, Easton being the pilot area for Warm Up Bristol. Expecting to get 12 -20 people there, the room was packed. Both ITV and BBC Regional News turned up, as well as the Bristol Post.. But the situations of the people caught up in this debacle are heartbreaking; one woman has been left with a hole in the flue inside the house – what a risk to her and her family! Several people have holes in their walls, including one young family with a 5-month old baby. Many people no longer have guttering or incomplete pipes. Awful situations. But, to our surprise, the Mayor, George Ferguson turned up. This shows how serious it is for the Council. He said that he had known about Climate Energy’s problems since May – this was news to us all. Scrutiny Committee of the Council reviewed Warm UP Bristol three weeks ago and were told that all was well. So I suggested the following strategy;
A full investigation of what went wrong and an audit of what has happened to the sizeable amount of public money (around £7.9 million) ought to be the next stage. The Mayor has promised that anyone who has paid a deposit will either have it re-funded or have their planned work completed; no timescale given as yet. He said “Over the next couple of weeks we will be making a decision on how to complete works and continue the Warm Up Bristol scheme in the best way…It’s important that we take time to assess the options properly rather than rush into a quick fix which might lead to further problems in the long term.” But why should he rush? It isn’t his home or pocket that is affected, is it? Green Capital Legacy? Green Capital mess –up! Cllr Eileen Means Labour Councillor. Brislington West

Just to be there! Despite England not being good enough to get through to the knock out stages of the Rugby World Cup, even with the advantage of being the host nation, there will still be many kids out there inspired by the Rugby World Cup and want to start playing rugby. Seeing the likes of Japan produce the biggest upset in rugby history and Georgia winning hearts around the nation shows the gap between the tier 1 and tier 2 nations is closing. England failed to produce at this World Cup, was it the pressure of being the home nation with so much expectation upon them? Many say it was being in the dreaded group of death? But one thing is for sure, England need to look to develop for their future which means building talent from a young age starting with mini rugby.
At Bristol Harlequins minis & juniors we focus on the kids having fun, team spirit, enjoying the sessions and making friends whilst learning the fundamental skills and laws (not rules) of rugby. We welcome boys and girls aged 5 upwards and have a team of RFU qualified coaches who deliver fun, varied and structured training sessions which is carefully balanced with competitive and fun fixtures with clubs all over the Bristol area. At Quins we pride ourselves on our friendly environment that offers excellent facilities both for players and spectators, so come along on Sundays at 10.30am and give it a try, your first session is FREE, you might even have a future International in the making!

Bristol Fashion Sing Their Hearts Out This is Bristol Fashion performing for our friends and families at our dress rehearsal for the big barbershop event of the year – the Ladies Association of British Barbershop Singers (LABBS) annual convention in the Bournemouth International Centre from 30th October to 1st November. If you think the lady with the bouquet looks familiar you may have seen her as one of the judges in the latest Gareth Malone programme ‘The Naked Choir’. Sally visits us regularly for coaching sessions from the White Rosettes, her award winning chorus in Leeds. By the time you read this it will all be over for another year, but as I write we are just 10 days from contest day! The tensions are already starting to build! It is very nerve wracking waiting for the MC to announce us, as the curtains draw back, and we are greeted by lots of applause and whooping, as only barbershoppers know how (we have occasionally shocked other, more staid contests with our vocal support of other competitors! )For this reason, I thought I’d do a bit of research on managing ‘performance anxiety’ or stage fright. People experience it in different ways – feeling breathless, heart beating fast, dry mouth, sweaty palms, wobbly legs --As singers, we learn how to control our breathing, and we need to use this to calm our nerves – taking deep breaths through our nose from the diaphragm, then consciously exhaling slowly through our mouth. We need to accept that anxiety is normal, and rather than feed into it, use the adrenaline which causes the symptoms, feeling it as excitement, expressing it and channelling it into our performance. During our coaching session at the weekend we experienced singing our competition set in a way we never had before – we were ‘in the zone’ and we all knew it. So we know how well we can perform and how it feels. No judges, no audience, just ourselves singing our beautiful songs as they deserve to be sung. That’s what we need to do. Watch this space to find out how we did in the contest – but apart from that – what happens in Bournemouth stays in Bournemouth! If you can’t wait till the next issue, check on our website www.bristol-fashion.org.uk

The Most Effective Drum It is difficult to imagine something truly poetic and beautiful generating from war and conflict. Yet war has produced some of the most elegant and blunt poetry and some of the most brilliant visual artistry of time. The Most Effective Drum continues the tradition of socially engaged theatre with a challenging and thought -provoking dramatization of poetry inspired by war, from some of the world’s most prestigious and talented authors, including Wilfred Owen, Michael Rosen, Yehuda Amichai, Ros Asqutih, Michael Mopurgo, Ariel Dorfman, & Walt Whitman. Piercing through the often - numbing effects of conventional news coverage it is brought to life by an ensemble of actors and a specially formed community choir. This dynamic performance combines theatre, poetry and a live musical score to put an achingly human face on the tragedies of war The writings represent the voices of the victims, observers and survivors. They span the centuries from Ancient Greece to the war in Iraq and their themes are universal. Disturbing, powerful and deeply moving records a remarkably resilient hope that blossoms despite the devastation of war. “As soon as war is declared it will be impossible to hold the poets back. Rhyme is still the most effective drum” Griraudoux. Devised by Julie Nicholson as an expression of remembrance Directed by Peter Clifford

In the Spotlight: Kim Brenan – Physiotherapist In October 2015, Kim was awarded physio of the year by Bristol North NASS and since May has been supporting the Bristol North NASS (National Ankylosing Spondylitis Society) branch. (Picture on the left: Kim is on the left and Rita Street chairwomen of Bristol North NASS) My degree was actually a BSc (Hons) Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation, rendering me a Sports Therapist and Rehabilitator rather than a physio. My course was more musculoskeletal based than traditional physiotherapy course, with a focus on exercise prescription and functional rehabilitation. I graduated in 2013 from the University of the West of England. I am now working as a Physiotherapy Assistant Practitioner in Trauma and Orthopaedics, specifically the rehab ward for the hip fracture patients. I have been involved in NASS since May this year and originally got involved after over-hearing two of my colleagues talking about it on the ward, after Adam (Senior physiotherapist who helps run the Bristol North NASS branch) had sent an email asking to get more physios involved. I’d studied AS at university and had done practical hydro sessions as part of my course so already had knowledge of the subject before joining NASS. I’d spoken with Adam about joining the sessions as an assistant but he then told me that my degree meant that I could lead the classes. The best thing about what I do is that I get to be creative. I have a large bank of exercises which I have learned throughout my degree and post-grad career so far, but I have learned to adapt these and tailor them individually to the people who I’m working with. This allows me then to be more specific and ensure that I can mix it up and keep it interesting. The best part of my career so far, I remember one patient, who I got to work closely with on a daily basis beginning before the move to the new hospital. When I first met her she was wheelchair-bound, having had a series of previous injuries which had prevented her from being able to move her lower limbs efficiently. I created a week-by-week exercise program with her, worked through from basic movement exercises through to functional tasks, using as much different equipment as I could find in the physio gym! The last time I seen this patient, she was walking with crutches and I’d taken her to the therapy garden to walk out in the sunshine – something which she had not done in years. As far as I’m aware, she is still continuing her rehab at home and progressing well. I felt like this was such a brilliant achievement for her after all of her hard work, which also meant a brilliant achievement for me

'Hover boards' are illegal on both pavements and roads, police say! The popular 'self-balancing scooters' must adhere to the same rules as Segways, meaning they cannot be ridden on roads or pavements and are only legal on private property. They've exploded in popularity and have been used by sports stars, celebrities and rappers, but "hoverboard" scooters are illegal to use in public, it has been confirmed. The vehicles, which have become a common sight on streets and range from around £200 to several hundred pounds, are a sort-of sideways electric skateboard, with users leaning forward or backward to control them. Of course, they do not actually hover, unlike Michael J Fox's vehicle in Back to the Future II and several prototypes that have attempted to mimic the technology. The hoverboard is simultaneously fascinating and exhilarating. The enabling technologies for its success have been in existence, but no one had yet been able to align them to give rise to a hoverboard (“rise to a hoverboard” . . . heh, that was easy). Hendo has done so, and our hoverboards are working in almost every way we could have imagined. The magic behind the hoverboard lies in its disc-shaped hover engines. These engines induce an opposing magnetic field in the surface substrate below that provides lift, levitating our board off the ground. While the Hendo hoverboard is primarily intended to be human-driven, the technology that gives it stability can also be used to drive it via remote control by altering the projected force on the surface underneath it. Right now we use commonly available metals in simple sheets to give the hoverboard “flight”, but we are working on new compounds and new configurations to maximize our technology and minimize costs. We know we’re still discovering all kinds of things about The Hendo hoverboard in particular and hovering technology in general. We look forward to sharing them as they become a reality. But they must adhere to the same rules as Segways under UK law. Segways are motor vehicles and thus cannot be ridden on pavements, but are not licensed either, so are not allowed to go on roads, after a 2011 ruling. In 2011, a judge decided that Segways must qualify as motor vehicles, and fined a man £75 for riding them on the pavement in Britain. The Segway never really caught on despite its initial buzz, but the hoverboard is becoming an increasingly common sight, despite being mocked by many sections of society.
