Mikes letter Welcome to April edition of Direct Local, As we hit the Easter Holidays!! the weather is seems like we may have to don our winter warmers before we have that BBQ. Easter also marks another relaxation on the lockdown rules as we are now allowed to meet out doors in groups of 6 or two families together. Then on the 12th April pubs and restaurants can reopen (outdoors) No need for a scotch egg either. I for one cannot wait to grab a cold one down the local pub and tuck in to some good old pub grub with my family once again. It looks like we may get a half decent summer to if we all were good boys and girls. Lets hope those riots in the cities stop soon and we get a peaceful return to protesting. Not that I agree with it as it breaks all the rules and the good work we have all done over the last few months. Anyway Happy Easter everyone.

Keeping party politics out of policing My name is John Smith, and I am running as your independent candidate for Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner. My independence, experience, and proven track record as Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner and the PCC’s Chief Executive in Avon & Somerset make me the best choice for your next Police and Crime Commissioner and, if I am elected, I will keep the party politics out of policing, answering only to you, not politicians in Westminster. It is my experience, not politics, that will help to keep Avon and Somerset safe, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic and as we all return to normal life. Having lived in the area for 20 years with my wife, three children and our dog, Evie, I have a deep understanding of the area and the issues people and businesses face. My priorities reflect my experience and the many conversations I have had with communities across this diverse area. They cover inner city crime issues as well as the concerns of people in more rural parts of the area.

10

If elected, my priorities to keep everyone safe would be: - Supporting the police to enforce COVID-19 regulations appropriately so we can get back to living normally as soon as possible - Tackling knife and drug crime, including County Lines - Catching burglars and reducing burglaries - Combatting anti-social behaviour - Championing Avon and Somerset to become the most inclusive police force in the country - Improving road safety - Preventing fraud and cyber crime - Addressing rural crime and supporting rural communities - Working in partnership to address business crime

After 9 years working for the current Police and Crime Commissioner and as Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner myself, I am proud that Avon and Somerset Police is currently ranked as one of the top five forces in the country and has achieved an ‘outstanding’ rating for efficiency. Despite central government cuts of 30 per cent over the last 10 years and having one of the biggest funding gaps in the country compared to other major city areas, we have also managed to ringfence, prioritise, and protect neighbourhood policing for local communities alongside developing specific teams dedicated to tackling rural crime and burglary. I am dedicated to protecting the safety of everyone in Avon and Somerset and if you give me your vote on 6th May, I will continue to make this my main priority. www.johnsmith4pcc.com Email: john@johnsmith4pcc.com Facebook: johnsmithforpcc Twitter: @johnsmith4pcc

Your garden in April Spring should be well under way this month with daffodils in full flow, their bright flowers enough to cheer up any day. Blossom trees will be blooming and fresh growth will be appearing on plants everywhere. “April showers’ are common but don’t be deceived by sudden burst of rainfall – you may need to start watering plants more regularly on dry, bright and windy days. With longer days and stronger sunshine growing conditions are continually improving and the warmer weather will give us all the opportunity to get busy in our gardens. Sow hardy annuals Hardy annuals are plants that can be sown from seed in the open ground. Get them off to an early start by sowing in pots or modules. Modular trays are also handy for sowing summer bedding plants such as marigolds, lobelia and petunias. Label each seed tray and once they are growing put them outside when the weather is warm day and night. 18

Support climbers Climbing plants should be growing rapidly now, so will need ample support for new growth. Extend or replace trellis as necessary or add more wire to archers and tripods. New shoots will need to be gently encouraged sideways as they grow. This will send vital growth hormones doing the length of the shoot rather than just to the tip and so will encourage flowering all over the plant.

Plant of the month: Rhododendron The rest of the garden will also be growing well now, so if you have been putting off carrying out any major pruning then now is the time to bite the bullet and get it done. Trees, shrubs and hedges should be cut back now before birds begin to nest.

Care for your lawn The lawn will need regular mowing from now until autumn. Get some maintenance carried out to your lawn mower to ensure it stays in good running order – at the very least your mower blades should newly sharpened ready for regular use. Keep the edges of the lawn tidy after moving with a sharp pair of shears or a lawn edger. Don’t forget to give the lawn a spring feed after mowing if you haven’t got around to doing it yet. If a more drastic approach is needed to spruce up your lawn, sowing seeds for new lawns or over seeding dead patches can be carried out from midApril onwards.

Why should you plant them? Ancient Greek meaning “Rose tree’ the rhododendron family includes azaleas. These stunning shrubs flower in all sorts of vibrant colours and can help brighten those difficult dark spots in your garden. Rhododendrons are grown for their spectacular flowers usually borne in spring, although some – the deciduous rhododendron or azaleas have good autumn colour. How should you plant them? In the wild rhododendrons are woodland plants, so they prefer dappled sunshine and can manage well in shade. They like plenty of water however will not do well in boggy or badly draining soil, so drainage is key. Plant in autumn or spring and use ericaceous compost.

New film launch - Bristol Remembers - and shared reflection on 18 March, 6pm. One year since England went into a national lockdown, Bristol takes a moment to remember, reflect and begin the healing process.

Bristol Remembers is a multi-agency campaign aimed at giving people a space to collectively reflect and remember those people and things we have lost throughout the pandemic, and begin to take the important steps to healing.

The film ‘Bristol Remembers’ will be launched online at 6pm, Thursday 18 March on www. wearebristol.co.uk

Alice Towle, Youth Mayor of Bristol said: “Being involved in this project has given me the opportunity to reflect and remember on all those things we as a city have lost over the last year, but also begin to look ahead at how we take those ever so important steps to healing. It’s also been so heartening to see people continue find the positives despite all the challenges they have faced. I look forward to seeing you all online on Thursday 18 March at 6pm.”

Additionally, an online book of testimonials will be launched where people can submit their own written memories of the people, opportunities, jobs and other important things that have been lost during the pandemic.

If you, or someone you know, would be willing to contribute a testimonial with your own personal reflection, please email wearebristol@bristol.gov.uk with the subject line: Bristol Remembers – Testimonial.

Vivienne Faull, Bishop of Bristol said: “It has been a year like no other for the city as with the country at large. We mourn those who have died during the pandemic and lament all that we have lost as the things we take for granted have been disrupted. It is clearly so important that we come together to remember. Please join with us at 6pm on 18 March in this collective moment as we look to rebuild, with hope for the future.”

A testimonial should be 150-200 words long, including a relevant photo, and can be about anything or anyone important to you that you have sadly lost throughout the pandemic. All testimonials will be handled sensitively and with the utmost care.

Frontline workers and artists, faith and city leaders have joined to share personal testimonials about important things that have been lost during the coronavirus pandemic, for a new film called ‘Bristol Remembers’.

Authentic Tempeh Launches Available for Home Delivery

Previously only available to top chefs, traditionally made tempeh is now available to order online from Bristol-based independent producer Tempeh Meades, delivered nationwide straight to your door. Are you ready to take your plant-based cooking to the next level?

“Tempeh has always excited me because it can be used in so many dishes; from starting your day with scrambled tempeh or pan-fried and added to a salad for lunch or even made into a burger, there are just so many possibilities,” says Benedict Meade founder of Tempeh Meades.

A plant-fuelled staple from Indonesia, tempeh is made up of healthy low GI protein made by forming cooked soya beans into a block and adding a culture to initiate a fermentation process. The end product has a firm texture, a nutty taste and is highly valued for the protein and fibre content, as well as being packed full of vitamins and minerals.

The health benefits of tempeh make it a reliable source of protein in a vegan or flexitarian diet, as well as being gluten-free, it has been known to improve digestive health. Tempeh absorbs and retains flavour extremely well, so many choose to marinade it first and then bake, fry or simmer in your favourite dishes.

Tempeh Meades is the brainchild of Benedict Meade who learned his craft, the traditional methods of making tempeh, in West Java. There it is enjoyed for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It was the versatility of tempeh which inspired Benedict to start his own tempeh-making business back in the UK.

Tempeh Meades dispatch freshly made tempeh every Wednesday for next day delivery, ensuring the product has the longest shelf life possible. Refrigerate at home unopened for 5 days and once opened use within 2 days, alternatively, it will keep in the freezer for up to 6 months.

Out and with Jos and Andrew

The proposal will not only provide the active travel corridor which local people so desperately want and need, but also a much needed shot in the arm for the local economy.

Cycling and walking rates in this part of Bristol are lower than other parts of the city primarily because of the lack of infrastructure and the largely accurate perception that the A4 Bath Road is an unpleasant and dangerous route for cyclists and pedestrians. This proposal would provide local people with a safe, Brislington Greenway off-road route all the way to the city centre, We recently revealed proposals from a private encouraging more people to switch to active company, Greenways and Cycleroutes travel. Don’t forget to join the Friends of Brislington Greenway, set up by local residents in 2017 to fight the Callington Road Link plans. The group currently has 366 members: https://www.facebook.com/ groups/196044540963847/ E-scooter Obstruction At Full Council earlier in the year, we asked the mayor about the issue of e-scooters blocking pavements and causing an obstruction to pedestrians. Unfortunately, the mayor dismissed our concerns saying it wasn’t an issue. However, as the attached photographs prove, it very much is an issue and a real hazard for pedestrians, especially those with mobility issues or visual impairment. A similar e-scooter scheme was recently launched in Portsmouth and there, a total of 17 parking racks have been installed across the city and a further seven are being proposed, where riders will start and end their journeys. We need storage racks or properly marked-out locations to park the e-scooters here in Bristol too. Simply dumping them in the middle of the pavement is unacceptable. John Peer Update We recently updated you on the resubmitted planning application for the development of 146 flats by Sovereign Housing on the site of the old John Peer factory opposite Arnos Court Park. Unfortunately, the reapplication was recommended for refusal by planning officers and the planning committee agreed and this month refused permission. This means that this Brislington eyesore is going to be around for a little bit longer. We will try to set up another meeting with the developers in order to find out what they plan to do next. We will of course keep you posted. Census Officials Census officials are currently in Brislington, helping people to complete their census forms, which is a legal obligation. There were some concerns about scammers operating in the area so if in doubt, please ask for ID. The census officials will be wearing a distinctive, purple and yellow hi-viz and a lanyard and will be carrying portable computer equipment. Sand Hill Daffodils We are delighted to see the daffodils we planted last autumn on Sand Hill in full bloom. Over time, we hope they will spread and bring some much needed cheer to a neglected corner of the ward.

We are also planning to meet up with a local horticulturalist, who designed some wonderful pocket parks in St. George’s, to come up with a wildlife-friendly planting scheme for the area. Family Fun Day Last week we had a meeting with staff at the Imperial Sports Ground on West Town Lane, who are hoping to host a Family Fun Day on 26 June. They are looking for people to help form a planning group to organise this and would also love to hear from individuals and groups who would be interested in participating in some capacity on the day. If you or anyone you know would like to be involved, please let us know, and we will pass on your details to the organisers. Councillor’s Surgery Success Thank you to everyone who joined us last Saturday for another successful councillor’s surgery. Lots of interesting conversations, especially our Brislington Greenway campaign. We’ll organise another surgery next month but please remember, you can contact us by phone or email at any time. See details below. Polling Station Change: Voters who normally go to the Bristol School for the Performing Arts (The White Hart) in Brislington Village to vote should be aware it is no longer available. Therefore, the polling station has moved to Holymead Juniors on Wick Road, accommodated in the Lower Hall. The school will remain open to pupils on polling day. While special measures will be put in place to ensure everyone’s safety at polling stations, by far the easiest and safest way to vote is by post. You can use our handy tool to get your postal vote set up today. If you don’t have a printer, let us know and we will get an application form to you. https://www. libdems.org.uk/postal-vote Keeping in touch: We believe in keeping residents up to date on important local issues and publish a quarterly newsletters, ‘Focus on Brislington West’. We also have a digital version and if you would like to receive it, please register using this link: http://www.bristollibdems.org/efocus. Frankenstein attraction to open in Bath in the spring

Credit: houseoffrankenstein.com

The first Frankenstein museum in the UK is to open this spring, with horror shows and escape rooms. It will open in Bath, where the gothic novel was written by Mary Shelley, and guests will be faced by an eight-foot animatronic replica of the monster. The house will tell the story behind the famous novel over four floors.

Jonathan said: “Chris proposed this one day, maybe about a year ago. “He said ‘did you know that Mary Shelley had written Frankenstein in Bath’, which I didn’t. “It was one of those ‘that’s going to work, we’ve got to do it’. We’ve got on with it and here we are now.”

Bristol Businesses Driving us out of Lockdown! Here at Community of Purpose we have 20 local businesses we would like to say thank you to. In 2020, we set ourselves a challenge to raise at least £20,000 to enable us to buy a people carrier. We needed a suitable vehicle that we could use as part of our Break Free programme, as well as the Bristol Together Championships programme. We knew we needed help from the local business community to achieve our challenge, and so we launched The Better Bristol Challenge. So, what is the Challenge? A new vehicle is a big ask, so rather than ask one company to sponsor the people carrier, we asked for local 20 companies to help us and sponsor it. We felt a £1,000 donation to Community of Purpose was a lot more affordable than a whole vehicle! Our Generous Donors. We can't thank the following 18 companies enough for supporting us, and donating towards the purchase price of the vehicle. Action Coach Bristol, Barrs Court Construction, Battrick Clark Solicitors, BNI Compton BOM IT Solutions, Brandal, Crystal Clear Glazing, Elmtree Garden Contractors First Class Communications, First Point Logistics , Inside Asia Group, Jeff Way Construction, Lancer Scott, MJT Controls Rakata Technology, Sparkle Cleaning Spider Group, Tutor Doctor Unitary Engineering Services 28

How it will help us help Bristol? Having the people carrier will make transporting food, equipment and children involved in our projects that much easier. In the school holidays, we run our Break Free holiday programme with Youth Moves, where we deliver a range of fun sports activities for children in the most deprived areas of Bristol. To help tackle the very real issue of holiday hunger, we provide the youngsters with breakfast and lunch, ensuring they have at least two meals in the day. During term times, we run the Bristol Together Championships, twinning local Primary schools. We bring children from different backgrounds together, to help them help forge friendships with groups they would be unlikely to usually mix with, helping to break down different race, class, geographical and faith boundaries that we see in Bristol, through the medium of football. The programme works with them to form a joint football team from the twinned schools, and compete at an annual tournament. With the COVID-19 roadmap, we aim to be delivering the programme face to face again in June this year. What it means to the children of Bristol? For the children of Bristol, we offer them safe places to engage with other children, activities to help them grow, and feed those most at risk of going hungry.
