Mikes letter Happy New Year to all our readers lets hope 2021 brings better things for everyone!
I hope everyone had a great little Christmas and enjoyed the restricted celebrations that we had for the new years eve. So it’s time once again to set those new years resolutions that we all break with in week 1, maybe this year things will be different? probably not lol.. 2021 does however bring more tougher restrictions for Bristol as we leave tire 2 and enter Tier 3 and yet more restrictions on what we can do with our friends and family. However there is some light at the end of the tunnel as the Oxford vaccine gets approved so this can only mean more lives will be saved over the coming months shouldn’t? Anyway lets raise a glass to 2021 and hope it bring some sort of normality to the nation. We are strong together Bristol! lets defeat this hidden threat this year!

Top tips for achieving your 2021 goal A new year often brings with bit thoughts of a fresh start, this is especially true in the health of business where after the indulgence of Christmas new health goal are particularly popular. However many New Year’s resolutions don’t make it to February. So if you’ve already started your goals or are planning on starting something soon, here are just two ideas that may help you achieve them in 2020.
It is always better to have something to aim for than heading off without plan.
Keep an accurate track of your results. So much emphasis is put on what the scales say, but I find this way of measuring a person’s progress to be completely flawed and highly disheartening. What are we actually trying to measure? FAT! So why do we weigh the bones, the hair, the skin, the muscles and the fluids all together and make determining decisions on health based from the outcome? Be realistic with you goal in short term. For men the best indicators of how you’re Drastic changes in diet can occasionally doing is to measure around the stomach, for bring a sudden improvement but if this isn’t women it’s around the thighs and buttocks, a healthy and maintainable method of losing but of course you can do both and various weight - the impact of the change can very quickly plateau leading to a sharp return to old other areas for even greater accuracy. Identify the area of greatest circumference (where habits. Dropping lots of weight immediately most of the fat is being stored) and measure in the first few weeks of the year may sound great, but even if you achieve this, you would the same are at the same time of day once every two weeks. This will give a far more then be highly likely to regain this weight and accurate view of your progress and how more within a short space of time. The most the changes in your diet are impacting your efficient way of losing weight is with steady health. and consistent progress through a routine of diet and exercise that you can do permanentGood luck and happy new year! ly. If you find yourself with goals that are too demanding in short term, give yourself a more realistic time frame and never be afraid to adjust your goals once you’ve set them. 6

Your garden in January
The garden in January needs to be prepared for all sorts of weathers, and if you’ve been following our advice over the last few months, your hard work is done for now. Most plants are dormant this month as they sleep through the cold weather, but there are still a few things to do in the garden. Spring is just around the corner and work can be done to prepare for the warmth of the new season. When its not too cold, beds and borders can be dug over and lawn edges can be repaired and Plant of the Month Helleborus Why should you plant them?
The essential gardening jobs for January Protect plants
Dig over bare ground
January is known for cold frosts and bitter winds so plants will need protecting. If you haven’t already done so, ensure protective fleeces are in place on tender plants over-wintering outdoors.
Run a fork through your vegetable patch or flower beds. This will help to aerate – getting air into the soil is important because plant roots need oxygen. Choose a dry day when the soil isn’t too wet. Don’t break your back breaking down large lumps of soil. Keeping them large can help air circulate and any later frosts will break them up.
Lift containers up onto pot feet – if water isn’t draining away the soil can become waterlogged.Wet compost can rot roots and cause pots to crack in frost. Remove snow from tree and shrub branches by knocking with a broom. Even a small amount of snow can add a lot of weight to branches, causing them to snap.
10
Feed the birds Natural food sources for birds are in short supply during the winter. Give them a helping hand by putting food out for them. Keep the food topped up but not full all the time – little and often is best.
Popular because they flower in cold winter and early spring, Hellebores herald the start of the New Year bringing a touch of colour to the garden. Commonly know as ‘Christmas Roses’ they are easy to grow and very hardy. They produce attractive flowers and their leaves create a perfect evergreen backdrop to spring flowering bulbs. How should you plant them? Plant in shady herbaceous borders and the areas between deciduous shrubs to give an early splash of colour. Happy in dappled shade they should be planted in rich, heavy soil that won’t dry out in the summer. ideal planting companies include Snowdrops, Primrose, Cornus and Mahonia.

Curried Butternut Squash and Peanut Butter Soup
This is the perfect antidote to those cold January days…
Method
Makes about 6 servings
1. Peel the butternut squash, cut into wedges, remove the seeds and fibres and cut into small chunks.
Prepare less than 30 mins Cook around 40 mins Ingredients • 1kg butternut squash • 40g butter (almond oil if vegan) • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced • 2 sticks of celery, thinly sliced • 2 tsp mild curry powder • 1 litre veg stock • 5 llbs crunchy peanut butter • 300 ml milk (coconut milk if vegan) • A squeeze of lemon juice • Salt and pepper • 50g salted and roasted peanuts chopped, to garnish • Chopped coriander leaf, to garnish 12
2. Melt butter or oil in a large saucepan and cook onion and celery on low, until soft and lightly browned. Add the curry powder and fry for 1 minute, then add the squash and stock. Season to taste and serve with the peanut and coriander garnish.

De-clutter for 2021 So you have survived Christmas and are now thinking: ‘ Where am I going to put all this stuff?” it happens every year (and throughout). We find ourselves submerged in gifts, and whilst it is lovely to receive them, there is only so much space in the house! You have two choices I guess, buy a bigger house or maybe it’s time to de-clutter! Mike at Direct Local explains. I find it hard to work when there is a lot of clutter around me. I resort to having a good clear up before I can channel my mind and get things achieved. At the same time, it is not always as easy as it sounds as we all get attached to our belongings. With this in mind, I thought I would try to help those of you who would like it. Once you have cleared the clutter, what you have remaining are the essential elements, which tend to be more beautiful and more elegant. 1.Make a list As with many tasks, it is usually easier to start with a plan. Write down all the rooms that you would like to work on and then start one area at a time. 2.What doesn’t have a function? This does take a certain amount of honesty, and is sometimes easier to do with someone else’s possessions, but, if you are doing this on your own, a little ruthlessness is called for. We all have sentimentality towards certain items, and hold onto others ‘just in case’. 3.De-clutter your wardrobe Anything that attains a hole is binned immediately. Effectively, as we get older our size and style changes as our skin and hair colour and some things just don’t work anymore. Whites don’t always stay as white as they once were, and neither does black. Whilst it is lovely to have summer beach clothes – how many do we need? Likewise, a pair of shoes that have never been worn because we don’t have the rest of the outfit to go with them possibly could find a better home.
14
A great way to do this is to turn all your hangers the wrong way, have a look in six months time which items haven’t been worn – the likelihood is that they will still be unworn six months later. 4.Dvds, Cds, Vhs, Cassettes In this digital age, so many of the above are now just not used and they can take up vast amounts of space – how often do you use them? I have found that I now upload all of my Cds to my Mac and play them through my TV, on my phone, in the car, on my ipad etc. as such, I bundled up all of my Dvds as Christmas gifts. The same unfortunately goes books. 5.Take a photo Sometimes, all we need is a reminder of something that we no longer need and, as such, a photograph of that chipped vase with some lovely flowers is all we require to allow ourselves to part with something we can no longer house. 6.The kitchen Now there is a special room, which always seem to harbour every gadget, dish and mug that we would possibly house. If you have a dishwasher, I would imagine that even you are surprised by the number of mugs you now have. I shall tell you, that if you have less mugs, it is amazing how much quicker it is to empty the dishwasher. Have you held onto the roasting tins that come with the last cooker you owned?
7.Retain, Recycle, Remove As you start to approach this mammoth task, you could try to separate into three criteria. Items you want to retain: items you could sell on eBay or donate to charity: and items that need disposing of in the bin. You may be surprised how much money you could raise by selling a few items that you really don’t want. This goes for clothing, as well as Cds, Dvds, furniture and even jewellery. You may even be able to have a holiday if you have really good clear out! And you can even get someone to do the hard work for you. For a fee.
Over a period of time, you would be surprised by the space that you reclaim. It may seem daunting; but having a clear-out can benefit not just your home, but also your 8.Five Item Rule mind. Psychologists have found that women If the above seems daunting, how about with cluttered homes have higher levels of looking at it in a far gentler way. Say, every cortisol – the stress hormone associated with time you clean or tidy the house, you select chronic fatigue, post traumatic stress just five items that you no longer need and set disorder, and higher risk of mortality. A recent them aside in a box or bag, or the boot of your study also showed that physical clutter car ready for you to drop off when your next affects people’s ability to focus, process passing a charity shop? information, and be productive – so jilting the junk could be just the energy boost you need. What are you waiting for?

Our pets have been a lifesaver for us during Covid lockdown, according to the retailer Pets at Home, which has seen sales, rise sharply.
Pets at Home said online the first half of its financial year, which runs between April and 8th October, reflected the entire period since the week after national lockdown was implemented. Restrictions on households weighed on trade in the first quarter before a 12.7% jump in like-for-like sales in the second three months.
The Chief executive of Pets at Home said pets had played an incredibly important role through a period of social loneliness. He added that during the early days of lockdown one of the few reasons people could go out was to walk your dog.
Pets at Home are classed as an essential retailer and have been allowed to stay open during lockdown. Total sales over the six months rose to £574.4m while pre-tax profit grew by more than 14% to £38.9m.
During the 6 months leading to the 8th October, Pets at Home saw revenues rise by 5.1%. Mr Pritchard told a national news organisation: "The pet care market has been incredibly strong throughout and I think that tells you an awful lot about people's relationships with their pets and the roles that pets play in people's lives. "It has been a lifesaver for many through this incredibly challenging period for everybody in the country." The change in more people working from home had allowed them to get a dog or a cat. More people have considered having a pet because their lives have changed and they are at home more often, The company sells some small animals and fish but does not sell cats or dogs. They said, however, that membership of its Puppy & Kitten Club for new owners had risen by 25% during the six-month period.
18
The company is very proud to state they did not place any employees on furlough and said that it has actually been recruiting more staff. The company warned of uncertainty because of the pandemic and said in a statement: "At this stage, absent any escalation of restrictions, or other significant disruption to our operations, we now anticipate full-year underlying pre-tax profit to be in line with the prior year." Looking ahead, with the value of the UK pet market set to hit £7bn next year and the nation's love affair with pet ownership showing little sign of abating, chief executive of Pets at Home said in a online statement: “The future appears well justified." However the retailer would be "mindful of the dampening effect of social distancing measures in store, which may impact margins over the all-important Christmas period and into the first quarter of 2021".

Gas boilers should be banned from sale after 2033 Gas boilers should not be sold after 2033 and all electricity production should be zero carbon by 2035 if the United Kingdom is to reach the target of net zero emissions by 2050. That is the warning from the climate change committee, which advises the government on how the country can reach the milestone.
This is the right carbon budget for the UK at the right time. "We deliver our recommendations to government with genuine enthusiasm, knowing that Britain's decisive zero-carbon transition brings real benefits to our people and our businesses while making the fundamental changes necessary to protect our planet."
The committee said the government should The steps will require £50bn a year by 2030, make sure the UK's emissions are cut by 78% most of which will have to come from the compared to 1990 levels by 2035. private sector, the committee said. It follows the government's announcement last week that it aims to reduce emissions by 68% compared to 1990 levels by 2030.
The Treasury is also likely to have to double funding for green measures to between £9bn and 12bn a year in 2030. But the committee said making homes greener could be done The government has also already said sales without large increases to energy bills and of new petrol and diesel cars will end in 2030. motorists could see the costs of driving fall after they shift to electric cars. Other advice from the committee includes: Dr Jonathan Marshall, head of analysis at the • People should be encouraged to reduce Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit, said: their meat and dairy consumption by 20% "Calling time on gas boilers will represent by 2030, with meat eating reduced by a major step on the UK's path to a carbon 35% by 2050, meaning more peatland to neutral nation and is a way for families up absorb carbon and to plant trees and down the country to take action on their carbon footprints." • Other carbon intensive activities should also be cut, with a slower growth in flights, reductions in car travel, cutting waste and boosting recycling
•
More action on energy efficiency, especially insulating buildings
•
Electricity will be zero carbon by 2035, with a phase out of gas power that does not have technology to capture and store its carbon emissions, and renewables - in particular offshore wind - generating 70% of power
•
By 2035, 460,000 hectares of new mixed woodland should be planted to remove carbon dioxide, increasing woodland should be planted to remove carbon dioxide, increasing woodland cover from
But some climate campaigners say that the Climate Change Committee’s target of 78% emissions reduction does not go far enough. Mike Childs, head of science at Friends of the Earth, said: “This is too conservative given the havoc and misery extreme weather is already causing, particularly to the poorest people in the world who have contributed least to climate breakdown. “We should be aiming to phase out the installation of new gas boilers well before 2030 and fitting approximately 10 million heat pumps by the same date. “It’s what government does right now that will determine if we meet our carbon pollution reduction goals. And what the government is doing is ploughing £27bn into climate-wrecking roads as well as funding damaging fossil-fuel projects overseas.”

Mick O’Neill-Duff joins your local Lib Dem team
Mick O’Neill-Duff joins your local Lib Dem team We are delighted to introduce the newest member of the Greater Brislington Lib Dem team. Here’s Mick in his own words: “Hello! May I introduce myself as your candidate for next year’s local elections? I am Mick O’Neill-Duff and I have lived in Bristol for 21 years. I have been happily married for 17 years (my second marriage) and I am very much a family man with 8 grown up children between us, 7 Grandkids and 2 Great Grandkids! Before moving to Bristol, I was a local councillor for 10 years in Milton Keynes. I worked hard for local residents, regularly badgering the council for better funding for my ward. As a councillor I was especially keen on mental health issues and working with disabled people, the elderly and the young. My proudest achievement was obtaining funds to turn a burnt-out building into a thriving youth club, local hairdressers and Snoezelen (a controlled multi-sensory room for people with autism and other developmental disabilities, dementia or brain injuries). I’m pleased to say this centre is still going strong to this day. I was a School Governor for two schools in Milton Keynes and I am also a School Governor for two schools here in Bristol. Another achievement was working with local schoolchildren to paint giant murals on an under pass by their schools. It certainly brightened up their daily commute to and from school!
I was involved in the formation of lunch clubs for elderly residents and supported various other clubs that helped disabled people. I also worked closely with our local community police officer, and during my time as a councillor we managed to cut crime dramatically in the ward. I will use my skills and experience to serve the residents of Brislington East to the very best of my ability. MW FUNERAL DIRECTORS GO THE EXTRA MILE
“One solution is webcasting of the service, which is now very common, but even that can feel lonely and remote to someone who was very close to an individual.
A Bristol funeral directors is going the extra mile to enable people to pay their respects while there are restrictions on attending funeral services due to Covid-19.
“One solution we have found is to put some more time into the journey to the service and work with families so that there is a timed route, often with pauses and stopping places where people can stand at the roadside or in a special place – such as a sports club – and pay their respects.
Routes to cemeteries and crematoriums are being planned by MW Funeral Directors so that those prevented from attending a service or self-isolating can pay their respects. Hearses are able to stop at significant points where family members live, social clubs or sports grounds with mourners able to socially distance while paying their respects, and often applauding. MW Funeral Directors cover the whole of Bristol, South Gloucestershire and further afield, planning and directing burials and cremations to the individual requirements of families.
“It is proving very comforting for families and makes more of an event before then they go to their laptop or computer to watch the service.” MW Funeral Directors say it is important to work alongside families and friends of the deceased to put together a memorial that will live on in the hearts of guests for many years and this should not be curbed by the current restrictions.
Ella Abbott, funeral director, said: “It seems certain that sadly the restriction of a maximum of 30 people at a funeral is going to be with us well into 2021. We have always arranged funerals in a truly bespoke way, to allow for personalisation and to meet the needs of the family and friends of the person who has died.
The team have organised funerals themed for special interest groups, such as bikers, environmentalists or animal lovers and for those of all faiths and of none.
“It is proving very difficult for some families to decide who should come to the service and how it will be organised and we have been working with them to find ways to ensure that the whole funeral and service honours the person who has passed away.
24
Said Ella Abbott: “There is a lot of flexibility around funerals. Sometimes cost can be an issue for a family so we keep our basic packages for a funeral early in the day when crematorium fees are low at £1,995 and there are even options for unattended funerals. “But in these difficult days it seems to be more important than ever for families to mark the event in a memorable way and we work with them to ensure that happens despite all the restrictions we all now face.”

Restrictions on landlords extended as the Government moves to provide further protection to struggling business tenants
Expert lawyers say relationships between landlords and tenants are now more important than ever following the announcement that the Government is to further extend the restrictions on landlord action for non-payment of rent by business tenants. Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick announced that the restrictions will be extended until the end of March 2021, having already extended the period twice previously since the introduction of restrictions in March 2020. Jenrick repeated the mantra that businesses which can pay rent should do so, while also announcing support for the businesses worst affected by the pandemic. Nicola Seager, partner in the property litigation team at Clarke Willmott LLP, said: “The announcement makes co-operation and communication between landlords and tenants ever more important as we all look to emerge from the pandemic with viable businesses.
“It remains to be seen whether this extension will stop the rush to CVAs as a means to force landlords to accept changes to lease terms and rents. The announcement made no mention of that increasingly popular practice.” The announcement did confirm: •
Landlords will not be permitted to forfeit business leases for non-payment of rent until the end of March 2021.
•
CRAR will not be permitted until the end of March 2021.
•
It will not be possible to petition to wind up a company based on a statutory demand served on or after 1 March 2020 until the end of March 2021.
•
It will not be possible to wind up a company for any reason other than failure to comply with a statutory demand without a reasonable belief that the company has not been affected by the pandemic or that the relevant basis for the petition would have occurred anyway.
“No doubt we will see more discussions about Clarke Willmott is a national law firm with ofpayment plans and rent holidays as tensions fices in Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, London, rise among landlords who increasingly feel Manchester, Southampton and Taunton. they are being unfairly treated.

Would you like to be protected but not hiding your face?
98% of people recommend this novel transparent mask that is taking the world by storm and putting smiles back in everyone’s face. The company said: “At first we thought face masks was a passing trend, but we quickly realised it’s here to stay. Beyond the discomfort, some argue that masks also cause damage on an emotional level”.
Then this new company enters the picture and develops a revolutionary product – a transparent face mask. It allows us to finally see each other’s faces, and gives us back our personal identity and smile. Life looks rosier with the transparent face mask. Behind the mask lies a new reality, and we must make the best of it. We expected this situation would last another week, another month… until we realized that face masks are here to stay for a long time, and we needed to find solutions to get through this period in the most comfortable way possible. Now the transparent mask is here – time to smile! Surgical masks, cloth masks, even when they’re decorated with patterns and colorful prints – they still hide much of our face. Many people complain about the difficulty of doing everyday tasks with them, there are those who claim that they make it difficult to communicate, and there are those who feel that they are “stealing” their uniqueness and identity. Someone had to invent it at some point, and it’s ingenious. The transparent mask, Face Clear, has recently landed in our city. Beyond being protective, it provides pure visibility. With the transparent mask our faces are visible, we can exchange smiles (and angry faces), we can talk normally, see facial expressions, communicate and feel comfortable. In short – we can go back and be ourselves. It’s no wonder that those who have already tried it – are addicted! Face Clear is for everybody. This mask is for all those who are concerned about their health and the environment. FaceClear is reusable and is not disposable like other masks. 30
It favors and improves relationships with others by not appearing so distant. Helps teachers and experts who need to explain and express themselves more clearly. Great discovery for specialists such as psychologists and other therapists whose face is one of their work tools. It helps journalists or people who work in the media and appear in public, to communicate better. What people haver been saying about Face Clear
James from Clifton said: All my friends have seen and bought it” The second I wore the see-through mask for the first time, I realised I was going to lead a trend. All my friends started asking me: Where did you buy it? From whom? And ordered themselves immediately. Now they are congratulating me. “I’m not going anywhere without this amazing mask” Ever since I discovered the transparent mask, I have become addicted to it. It is so comfortable that sometimes I forget it’s on my face. Perfect!! “We got our smile back” When me and my partner realized we will have to wear masks all the time, we became depressed. It was difficult for us to see, hear, smell, and we could barely do anything. Since we discovered the transparent Mask, our lives have changed for the better. We can suddenly do everything, and all the senses are back in full swing. This is simply an ingenious invention!
