If your out trick or treating don’t forget to stay safe and stay in your groups as there is safety in numbers. When we used to go out trick or treating with my son and friends many years ago we used to crack a joke or two on the door such as quoting “Trick or treat” Then as they said we do not have anything we would react with “We do take cheques and credit card payments too” ... But please do not try this as we did get some funny looks and a few irate people lol. Finally as we get closer and closer to the deadline for Brexit on the 31st October there seems to be more and more uncertainty with whats going to happen do you think it will ever come to an end? Or do you want us to remain in the EU ? All we know is the future is not looking that bright at the moment. Disclaimer

The Friends of Brislington Brook or FoBB to you & me, are a friendly group of local people who love where they live and want to do a little bit to make the area just a little bit nicer. Over the last few years they have organised work parties to collect litter in Nightingale Valley and St Annes Woods. They have collected some pretty big things too. The biggest single piece of “Litter,” was a sheet of heavy duty corrugated iron 6ft wide by about 8 ft long. Probably a chunk of an old air raid shelter from the Second World War.
This is called the Community Infrastructure Levy or CIL. This money goes to offset the inconvenience to the local community caused during the construction process. FoBB have applied to this fund and got money to erect a series of signposts along the brook.
They also organise the occasional fun event to look for owls or bats. In the past they have organised a pilgrimage to St Annes Well and walks to the source of Brislington Brook up in the Mendips. As you walk into the valley you will see the sculptures that adorn the entrances to the valley. These were paid made by a sculpture called Paul Gulati and were paid for with grants that FoBB got. You will might also note the Brass Rubbing Trail. This is a series of plaques attached to concrete plinths stretching along the valley from Allison Road all the way through to The Coop. These plaques have information on the history and wildlife in the area and are well worth a look as you go through the valley Property developers pay a levy to the council
10
Many people don’t appreciate that this beautiful bit of countryside in the heart of the city can be used as a short cut to the Doctor or to the Coop. They also might not know about the historic sights of interest like the Bricked up Tree or the Packhorse Bridge. FoBB want ideas for where these signposts should go and what they should point to. Do you have any ideas? Drop an email to info.fobb@gmail.com with your suggestion and they will add it to the mix. If you want to know more about FoBB visit https://friendsofbrislingtonbrook.wordpress.com/ or take a look at our Facebook page, search for Friends of Brislington Brook.
Councillors Surgery This year has been an incredibly busy one for me, but also immensely rewarding. On top of my normal duties as your Liberal Democrat councillor for Brislington West, I have also had the honour and privilege of being the Lord Mayor of Bristol, a ceremonial post dating back to 1216, which is likely to see me complete around 800 engagements over the course of the year. Luckily, the Brislington Liberal Democrats is not just one person but a team of hardworking volunteers, who help me in countless ways. It would simply not be possible to get so many things done without all those local residents who work in the background to make our community a better place to live. Chief among them has been my ward partner, Andrew Varney, who has been working tirelessly for several years to protect and improve our area. Whatever the issue, whether large or small, Andrew has always been willing to help and try to make a difference. One highly contentious issue has been the location of the Bristol Arena. Both Andrew and I supported the Arena Island site next to Temple Meads, the largest transport hub in the South West, rather than the Mayor’s preferred site at Filton in North Bristol. As well as encouraging more concert-goers to travel by public transport, It would bring much needed investment and jobs to our side of Bristol, so often neglected in the past. Both Andrew and I submitted statements and questions at Full Council, but it was clear the Mayor had already made up his mind. He even told me that Brislington residents did not want the arena at Temple Meads even though Andrew’s online survey of more than one thousand people showed that over 90% of Brislington residents wanted the Arena at Temple Meads. Unfortunately, the Mayor refused to listen and I feel sure Brislington and the wider city will be all the poorer, both economically and culturally, for that. Another important recent issue has been the Joint Spatial Plan, which proposes building tens of thousands of houses and many more roads across the region.
Article by Jos Clark Liberal Democrats
Both Andrew and I have argued against the flawed plans from the outset. Andrew has been especially active in opposing the Callington Road Link, which would mean yet another main road through the heart of a densely populated residential area, leading to more traffic, more congestion and more pollution in our area. Andrew has long advocated the Brislington Greenway instead, a cycling and walking route along the old Brislington railway line, which would protect wildlife, provide safe, sustainable travel opportunities, and create a community space to bring people together. Luckily, government inspectors also found the plans to be so fundamentally-flawed they threw them out at the first hurdle. This makes the damaging Callington Road Link, along with many of the other proposals, increasingly uncertain. One of my main aims after being elected back in 2016 was to try to rejuvenate the Sandy Park Road and get more residents shopping locally. I was worried that if we didn’t, the street could wither and die like so many others have done across the country. Following consultations and several public meetings, Andrew and I became founding members of SPRING, the Sandy Park Road Improvement Neighbourhood Group. Working together with many talented local residents, we have helped organise many community events including SPRING Fest and SPRING into Christmas. Andrew was also part of the successful bid to get funding to create the Brislington Green Trail, which aims to improve and link together our wonderful green spaces. I am also delighted to say that planters have now started appearing on Sandy Park Road. With a more attractive streetscape and regular community events, I hope the Sandy Park shopping area has a more certain future. Another success story has been saving the Jubilee Swimming Pool. You may remember the Mayor planned to close this facility, but working together with our Lib Dem colleagues in Knowle and further afield, organising protests and collecting over 6,000 signatures, we forced the Mayor to perform an embarrassing u-turn, similar to his u-turn on closing our libraries. This is just a small snapshot of what we have been doing over the last few years. Andrew and I both live in Brislington and we both want the best for our area, so I am very pleased that he has decided to stand with me in next year’s Local Council Elections. Brislington is a great place to live and with Andrew and me as your local councillors, we will work hard to make sure it gets even better. PS: If you would like to join me at the Mansion House for one of my ‘At Homes’, please go to the Lord Mayor page on the BCC website and book a place for yourself or a group.

SUMMER READING CHALLENGE

During the summer holiday, 823 children at Wick Road, Knowle and Filwood libraries joined the Summer Reading Challenge, which is a national initiative, encouraging children to continue reading during the school break. The theme was ‘Space Chase’, to commemorate the 50th year since the first lunar landing, and children were tasked with reading a total of six books, in order to complete the challenge. Along the way they collected stickers, and when they finished the challenge they were rewarded with a certificate, medal and DVD voucher. All three libraries provided a craft activity each week linked to the theme of space, and children also had great fun taking part in treasure hunts and word search puzzles, as well as dressing up in different space related costumes. There was a wonderful, busy atmosphere throughout the summer in our libraries, and many delighted faces as children received their prizes. Well done to all the children who took part!

Councillors Corner Money spent locally does more good.
This is basically the motto behind an approach to encourage local businesses and social enterprises to bid for and win more work from key city institutions, an approach where Bristol is leading the way. There was a time when public procurement of services was seen as ‘process’ and ‘out-sourcing’. I’m not sure that was ever really true, but it’s never been less true than now. Big public agencies in Bristol are getting together to encourage smaller, local companies and voluntary groups to deliver services, and to bring some of these services back where they belong in the public sector. The old ‘out-sourcing’ model has long been seen as threadbare – exposing critical local services to risk by breaking them up and allowing the easiest or fastest work to be cherry-picked away. This concept was finally broken by the Ministry of Justice’s farcical idea to privatise the probation service – because, sure, keeping the public safe from crime and guiding ex-offenders to turn their lives around sounds like the exactly the sort of simple, paint-by-numbers business ripe for cutting down to size. What’s the worst that could happen?
What happened was the re-offending rate went UP by 22%, and a Tory Government had to spend an extra £467m of your money just to terminate the contracts early. Who was the Minister who thought up this shambles? Chris Grayling. The man who would go on to spurge £50m of your money on non-existent ferries, then waste another £33m apologising to Eurotunnel for forgetting that ferries are not the only way to pour money into the sea. On the plus side, he has left behind a helpful motto that I use every time I’ve got a difficult decision to make – imagine what Chris Grayling would do, then do the exact opposite. Happily, Bristol has long been doing things that Chris Grayling wouldn’t like, and doing them pretty well. The starting point is to treat workers and service users fairly. Bristol is a Living Wage city, with many big institutions, from the Labour-led City Council to the University and many others, agreeing to pay at least the Real Living Wage, currently £9/hour to their employees and to expect their suppliers to do the same. Not only does this guarantee a decent standard of living, it also gets rid of the old idea that moving services out of the public sector means paying people less – and means that different organisations can differentiate themselves on quality and ethos, not wages. The next step is to encourage smaller local companies and charities to bid for work that they can do better – which means making the procurement process as clear and simple as possible, so that more of the money spent by Bristol organisations stays in Bristol and supports working families in our city. The next step is the hardest – to build capacity for local organisations to do things they haven’t done before. A visible example is Bristol Waste – creating and keeping jobs in the city, and not letting the value seep away to shareholders elsewhere or overseas. This city is great at coming up with new ideas, from creative industries and design to services and engineering, and we all benefit when those ideas are nurtured in Bristol and create a self-reinforcing local economy.

Your Garden In October
Autumn is officially here! October, in all its glory, gives us a wonderful display of colours. The trees are beginning to lose their leaves in abundance as they become dormant for winter, telling us that the change of season is in full swing.
The days are much shorter and cooler and we can feel autumn chill in the air. Although trees are the stars of the month, October is time to think about how the garden will look when it wakes from hibernation. There are plants to be cut back and left tidy for the winter, shrubs to be planted or moved, summer plants to be removed and replaced with winter hardy bedding, bulbs to be strategically placed in borders and the lawn to be fed and given its final mow October may bring with it the beginning of quiet times for the garden – but not for the gardener. TIDY PERENNIALS Perennials are not difficult plants to care for, but trimming them after flowering finishes in autumn helps to improve their appearance and give a boost to next year’s flowering. Using a knife, shears or secateurs, cut stems close to the ‘crown’ or dormant base of the plant. Any crowded clumps of perennials can also be lifted, divided and replanted. Take the opportunity to remove weeds as you prune before applying a light mulch to protect from any hard frost.
PLANT TREES AND SHRUBS October is the ideal month to plant trees and shrubs. Although the container grown plants can be planted at any time of the year they are easier to care for if planted in the autumn or winter. The ground is damp and still warm which gives the perfect conditions to allow roots to become established before winter sets in.
PLANT AUTUMN BEDDING Any remaining summer bedding will be looking very tired by now and is best cleared and replaced for a fresher display. Autumn bedding such as pansy and primrose will give an instant lift to the garden and they look great planted between the shrubs in the border. Myositis, which produces masses of small flowers with the little white eyes and Sweet William, which provides a colourful carpet of flowers from spring through summer are both ideal for over wintering if planted now.
LOOKING GOOD THIS MONTH... Conifers
WHY SHOULD YOU PLANT THEM? Conifers are hardy evergreen trees and shrubs that suit any garden. They come in a huge range of shape and sizes and textures and the colour can be anything from yellow or light green through to dark green and blue. Easy to care for and long lasting, conifers are the ideal choice for any gardener looking for a low maintenance but high impact plant. HOW SHOULD YOU PLANT THEM? Dwarf conifers are good for containers and larger shrubs and trees make good hedging or garden features. They are happy in any soil in the sun or shade. Newly planted conifers will need watering until established.. After flowering, sheer back dead flower stems to keep the plant looking full.

Murderous Goings-On At Cadbury House This Halloween Budding detectives wanting to put their powers of deduction to the test this Halloween should make their way to the South West’s leading four-star hotel where the most taxing of murder mystery nights awaits!
Mehment Kandemir, general manager at Cadbury House said: “Murder mystery nights have become hugely popular in recent years made all the better by the people who take part and the setting in which they are held.
Taking place at Cadbury House in Congresbury on Friday 25 October, guests to the gothic-styled venue will be transported back in time to the tiny community of Feeny Barr on All Hallows Eve, 1937.
“Cadbury House, with its gabled exterior and the gothic look just can’t be beaten for atmosphere for these particular events, especially around Halloween.
The setting for this particular night of dastardly deeds is on the remote part of Murkle Moor where the fog sits for days on end and the people who live there move about in the few hours of daylight almost unseen to each other. The short days give way to long cold nights and the tiny single-track that winds its way in and out is a perilous journey even for the locals, while many an unsuspecting traveller has lost their footing and sunk into the marshes that line the road. A community that is steeped in tradition and old wives tales have a way of coming true so if you had a mind to murder someone, or perhaps more than one, then Feeny Barr at Halloween would be a hard place to beat for the perfect setting!
“It’s great to see everyone getting so involved as the drama unfolds. Super sleuths who come along will be in for a fantastic night of detective work, while enjoying the ambience and atmosphere of the 19 Century house as well as a delicious three-course meal. “I’d strongly recommend to anyone who wants to come to book soon as this event is set to prove very popular and will most certainly be a night to remember.” Prices for the evening are £39.00 per person and includes a three-course dinner with coffee, local fudge and disco until 1am. Those who want to make a night of it can include an overnight stay with breakfast and costs £195 per room based on two people sharing.

Equity Release Myth Busters Here is our guide to bust some of those myths about releasing equity and provide you with some facts:
With a lifetime mortgage, the most popular method of releasing equity from your home, you will not have to sell any part of it to anyone. The lender will release the funds once a charge is secured on your home, the same as a normal residential mortgage you may have had previously, and you are entitled to carry on living in your home for the rest of your life.
“I cannot leave an inheritance for my family” False
“I will leave a debt for my loved ones if I go ahead with equity release” - False
Equity release will reduce the value of your estate it will not prevent you from leaving an inheritance for your loved ones. You can even opt for a guaranteed percentage your home value to be left to your beneficiaries.
This is not the case. Equity release plans now come with a “no negative equity guarantee”. This means you or your estate will never be asked to repay more than the value of your property, even if the amount owed is greater. We will not recommend a plan to you that does not offer such protection.
“If I release equity from my home now I will not be able to move in future” - False Equity release lenders will allow you to move your loan from one property to another. However, it should be noted that there are certain instances when it may not be possible to transfer your loan from one home to the next. The lenders have strict property criteria so you will need to check with your lender to make sure your new home can act as acceptable security. “I will have to hand over my deeds and will not own my own home any-more” - False
“Equity release is not for everyone” - True Equity release may well not be the right option for you at this time, we understand that everyone is different. Our job is to make sure you know everything you need to, before making any decisions. Rest assured, if we do not think it is the right choice for you, we will say so. You can therefore make informed decisions.
A Lifetime Mortgage could help you in retirement We’ll provide the canvas... ...Paint the future you deserve Contact us for qualifed and impartial advice
Call us on 0800 2545169 or find us at www.laterlife-lending.co.uk This is a lifetime mortgage. To understand the features and risks please ask for a personalised illustration. Our typical advice fee would be £600. A lifetime mortgage may impact your entitlement to means tested benefits and the inheritance you may leave.

There’s Spooky things happening at Cineworld this October.. Following on from a hectic September, the Halloween season brings with it plenty of scarily good movies to see at your local Cineworld. From animated epics to comic book icons, October doesn’t disappoint with big hits gracing the silver screen. Let’s get into it:
Joker
Kicking us off this October 4th is the highly anticipated origin movie centred on DC’s clown prince of crime, simply titled The Joker. Said to be inspired by ‘70s Martin Scorsese films, witness the birth of a villain as portrayed by award-winning actor Joaquin Phoenix. Fast forward a week later and Abominable arrives as the new animated feature film from the people behind How to Train Your Dragon. It follows the epic quest between a young girl and yeti who must travel to the highest point on Earth. The following week, on October 18th, it’s a Abominable blockbuster double feature as Shaun the Sheep: Farmageddon and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil arrive. The former sees Aardman’s mischievous lamb caught in a government conspiracy, while Disney’s second Sleeping Beauty spin-off sees the world of humans and fairies divided once again. Then, on October 23rd, Terminator: Dark Fate attempts to inject new life into James Cameron’s longstanding sci-fi series, bringing back both Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger in their respective iconic roles. Finally, everyone’s favourite kooky household returns two days later via a new animated version Terminator of The Addams Family. Believe us when we say nobody celebrates Halloween like these guys.
