Building relationships with those currently without a home. Neil & Natalie Winterson @ Gemsec were looking to sell a Volkswagen Transporter so offered it to Hayley from Help Homeless Bristol for a much-reduced price. Sadly, it wasn’t really what she was looking for, but Vans 365 offered a different vehicle which was quite a bit out of her price range but kindly agreed to take the as an exchange. At this point Hayley’s just giving page was raising money to buy and run a van. Neil spoke with the other directors @ Gemsec and they agreed to support HHB. They agreed to donate £1000 to help with the running costs among other things she needed.

Make Bristol Even Better.. Most people look back and remember their school holidays as some of the best times of their lives. Going on trips and days out, times with their friends and family, free of school work and responsibility, maybe attending a holiday camp or activities week! What isn’t to like? Unfortunately for many young people growing up in Bristol today, this is not their experience. Underlying poverty and community issues have been exacerbated by the economic crisis and the change to Universal Credit. This has left many families unable to afford access to these opportunities, and in many cases has even undermined their ability to access basic needs such as food and getting 3 meals a day. So, rather than looking forward to the school holidays they have become for many a stressful time, when families who already struggle find it even harder to provide for their children and young people.

8

Families experiencing financial pressures are not only at greater risk of food insecurity, family stress, isolation, and poor health during the holidays, but they also miss out on the so-called social “enrichment activities” such as trips, sporting, cultural and learning activities enjoyed by better-off children. So, the problem is clear and easy to define, and luckily so is the solution, but we need your help to enable us to achieve it! When you sign up to the Better Bristol Lottery you will be helping us to alleviate food poverty for young people. Together we’ll be able to help young people BREAK FREE from: • • • • • •

Being hungry during the school holidays or being unable to cover the costs of lunches during these times. Having nothing to do during the holidays. Having nowhere to go other than staying at home or out on the streets. Having no-one to talk to. Having to pay for high quality services. Screens and boredom.

Bees behaving badly It's spring, and for honey bees, that means swarm season. But if you see a swarm on your property, there's no reason to be alarmed its normal to see swarms between April and August with June being the most likely Professional Bee Keeper Carl Flay says.

Here's what you need to know about honey bees this season: Panicking around a bee (or swarm of bees) is never a good idea what your parents taught you is true: if you don't move, you won't be stung (in most cases, anyway). When a bee lands on you, there is no need to panic. Rather than attempting to sting you, the bee is likely licking the salt from your skin, as it requires that salt to produce honey. However, it can sense your fear. That means, if you begin to panic, the bee may feel threatened and retaliate as a result.

Honey bees don't sting very often Generally speaking, honey bees don't sting very often, because when they do, they leave behind the stinger, as well as part of their abdomen, and do not survive. Bees swarm when they are looking for a new home There are plenty of reasons why bees swarm, but they are all centred around the need to leave one hive in search of another home. Overcrowding, or a dislike for the queen bee, are two potential reasons why bees would choose to leave their current home so If you see a swarm, leave it alone Some people will see a swarm on their property and try to spray it with insecticide, or get rid of it in some way. Carl advises not to do this these bees are harmless and will not attack, especially when in swarming mode. Also, they will eventually go away on their own. Usually, bees will remain for four or five days in swarms. Please contact me if a swarm has settled in your garden and I will come collect and re home for free. Get Growing Garden Trail Garden open days June 2019 Garden open days June 2019 .

Bristol Food Network’s Get Growing Garden Trail returns for the 8th year, with 32 of Bristol’s fruit and veg gardens throwing open their gates throughout June. The Trail offers the perfect opportunity for families and friends to explore the city’s community allotments, orchards, smallholdings, mini market gardens, city farms, productive parks and even a unique berry maze! New for 2019, the Trail will centre on a different area of the city each weekend, so in addition to weekday volunteering sessions, openings have been coordinated for different areas of the city with a focus on East Bristol the weekend of 1st and 2nd June, North-West Bristol 8th and 9th June, Southville and St. Werburghs 15th and 16th June and South Bristol 22nd and 23rd June.

This year gardens on the trail will be highlighting their nature-friendly growing methods and approaches with a wealth of tips, ideas and insights for visitors to take back and share at their own plot and garden, all in a bid to support and encourage more nature-friendly growing in the city. Your Garden In May Spring is well underway now. The spring bulbs are fading and the herbaceous border is growing in leaps and bounds. The May days are longer and warmer and the risk of frost should have gone by now. The idea of getting out in the garden during the fine weather and ‘ticking things off the list’ becomes much more appealing. Spring flowering bulbs and plants will need clearing in preparation for summer bedding, and its promise of colour to come. But don’t get overwhelmed by those seemingly endless list of gardening jobs – here are our three most important…

Looking good this month... Geranium Why should you plant them?

Plant summer bedding May is the month to get your summer bedding started in borders and containers. If planting borders lift out old plants run a fork through the soil and add a good fertilizer before replanting summer plants.

Remove around a third of the oldest flowering stems – this will make the plant look better and encourage new growth to create a good display next year. Be sure to check large shrubs and hedges for nesting birds before you start chopping!

Try to fill pots and containers in the position they are going to stay – they can become heavy when filled! Water retaining crystals will help to reduce the amount of watering and keep the compost moist during warmer periods. Don’t forget to feed with fertiliser during flowering period.

Plant out young veg Marrow, courgette and sweetcorn are all ready to be sown in the greenhouse. The likes of brussel sprouts, kale, peas and swede should be okay covered outside.

Prune evergreen hedges and spring flowering shrubs There’s no better time to give evergreen hedges a trim to get them looking neat and tidy. Smaller hedges can be tackled with a pair of shears, but you may need a hedge trimmer for larger bushes. Prune any shrubs that flowered in spring as soon as they have finished flowering. Broom, forsythia and ribes all need pruning now.

18

If you have already own tomatoes, move them outside to harden them off. Keep them outside during the day and bring them back inside at night for two weeks to acclimatize them. If you have potatoes that are starting to emerge, pull a few inches of earth around the plant with a rake to give the plant more soil to grow.

Enjoy your garden!

Geraniums make popular bedding plants – either in the garden or in pots and hanging baskets. They thrive outdoors in the summer but are also great for using a houseplant. They look good planted in a group in a flowerbed all by themselves or mixed in with other annuals – the perfect plant for any spot that calls for a splash of colour throughout the season. How should you plant them? Geraniums need to be grown in well draining soil or if planting in pots a good quality free draining compost. They should be located in a bright spot in the garden that gets plenty of sunshine. Soil should be allowed to dry between watering to avoid root rot.

Caught by the pension tax trap?

Avoiding the charge

Those looking to cash in part, or all, of their personal pension need to check they don’t pay too much tax.

The emergency tax code is still applied, but this triggers HMRC to adjust your tax code and send an updated version to your pension provider. Once the new code has been issued, any further, larger withdrawals are taxed correctly.

Pension freedom rules allow anyone aged 55 or over to access their personal pension funds, there are complex rules on how withdrawals are taxed. Problems can occur if you take a one-off lump sum – an ‘uncrystallised fund pension lump sum withdrawal’ (UFPLS) – perhaps to reinvest or to pay off debts. This differs from using a personal pension to provide a regular income, through a drawdown plan or annuity. Your pension provider will apply an emergency tax code, which assumes you are withdrawing the UFPLS on a monthly basis, unless it has an up-to date tax code for you.

As emergency tax codes are generally only applied the first-time people access their pension funds, one option is to make your first withdrawal a nominal amount, say £100.

You may be able to claim a rebate, either through your tax return at the end of the tax year, or HMRC if you need the rebate more quickly. If you are planning to withdraw a lump sum from your pension contact Bristol & West financial services. The Financial Conduct Authority does not regulate tax advice. Levels and bases of taxation and tax reliefs are subject to change and their value depends on individual circumstances. Tax laws can change.

For example, if you take a UFPLS of £10,000 at the start of the tax year, HMRC may assume you will take an income of £120,000 across the year from your pension and tax you accordingly. If it is a one-off withdrawal, you are likely to pay too much tax.

Councillors Surgery Whatever your view on leaving the European Union whether you were on the remain or leave side of the referendum none of us wanted to see our Country reduced to an international joke and the obvious harm it has done to our democratic institutions. Social media is full cartoons, videos and jokes around the Tory Governments handling of Brexit, but for many businesses and EU nationals it is no laughing matter. Judging the way this Government has dealt with the Windrush generation then I would not trust them to deliver fairness to others from overseas that call our Country home. Those who led the campaign for us to leave, had for many years before the referendum being calling for separation from Europe should have mapped out their vision of the way forward. Yet all we have heard from the Bill Cash’s of this world are what they don’t want, with no suggestion of how we get out of this impasse. Those who suggest a people’s vote are shouted down and told they are undemocratic for calling for a new vote due to the fact that we now have more information and that circumstances have changed. Yet these are the very same people who have decades refused to accept the original 1975 European referendum which was won on a much bigger margin than the last one.

Now close to three years after the referendum in which we were told it would be easy to leave, that German and French manufacturers would be falling over themselves to get their Governments to agree a deal we are stuck in Parliamentary limbo. There is now a very strong possibility that we will have to take part in the European elections and most parties are gearing up to fight those elections. Quite what the Tories and Labour will offer the voters is a mystery,(even to themselves), but the Liberal Democrats will stand at these elections as pro European party wanting us to remain in the EU and fight for Britain’s (and Bristol’s) interests. We say that a vote for us is a vote to have a fresh say over whether we want to leave or remain in a people’s vote. These European elections will cost £110m and the newly elected MEPs may have the shorted term of office in history. Brexit has certainly opened a pandoro’s box, a Country split almost in half, a dis-functional Parliament and an EU election with a flexible end date. Is it any wonder that having created the biggest political mess in living memory the Tories are proposing to boycott the EU elections altogether, leaving others yet again to pick up the pieces of their flawed and ill thought out Brexit plan. As Spike Milligan once said ”Parliament is the biggest political asylum in the Country.” After this mess I can see what he means.

May has six bock busters lined up at Cineworld Just when you think that movies couldn’t get more epic than Avengers: Endgame, the month of May brings with it a slew of highly anticipated blockbuster releases to your local Cineworld. Be sure not to miss out on any of what’s coming! Kicking us off on 10th May is Pokémon: Detective Pikachu. This marks the first ever live-action Pokémon movie almost a full decade after 2000’s First Movie debuted in cinemas, following the adventures of the eponymous Pikachu voiced by Ryan Reynolds as he cracks the case plaguing Rhyme City. Expect to see such fan-favourites as Charizard, Mr Mime and more on the big screen.

Then, almost two weeks later, Disney’s live-action version of Aladdin arrives to transport us to a whole new world. Will Smith takes on the role originally popularised by Robin Williams in the 1994 classic, giving us a modern rendition of the genie of the lamp. Directed by Guy Ritchie, Aladdin paves the way for The Lion King and Maleficent 2 coming later this year.

Finally, Godzilla: King of the Monsters hits the big screen on 29th May, further broadening Legendary’s MonsterVerse by seeing the giant lizard do battle with other iconic creatures. If you prefer your animals fluffier, there’s always The Secret Life of Pets 2 on 24th May. The fun doesn’t stop there as Cineworld Bristol and Direct Local Magazines are teaming up once again to give viewers a chance to win a prize. Just fill out the next page word search.

The Summer season is now properly getting started, so be sure to strap into your cinema seat!

Councillors Corner Bristol is known and loved for many wonderful things – the coloured buildings, the street art, a strong musical history, the food scene and many other attractions. However, one of the least popular aspects of living in the city is the public transport system which can make living or working outside of the centre very difficult. Here in Brislington we suffer from poor access to a decent range of public transport options, with the only real choice being the bus service. Unfortunately, this can be expensive and slow as it has to share the roads with all the other traffic. The 36 bus route was recently changed to try to improve punctuality as it has always been extremely unreliable – unfortunately this has had the result of First Bus cutting the route in two which has created a transport divide between the two halves of Brislington. It is harder for residents to travel across the city now from Brislington to Knowle or Hengrove and more expensive. When buses were first privatised, it was promised that non-profit making routes like this would be maintained through local council subsidies but these have been cut back as a result of austerity to almost nothing. Our other bus, the number 1 also suffers from reliability issues as it has to travel along the busy Bath Road. We shall continue to campaign for a better bus service for residents that is more frequent, less expensive and better suited to the needs of the ward.

For many years, Brislington councillors and the Labour MP for this area Kerry McCarthy have been campaigning to reopen St Anne’s Station to provide an alternative route to Bath, Temple Meads and the centre. The idea of reopening St Anne’s Station is still part of the WECA Joint Plan 4 and there has recently been a feasibility study commissioned to look at the infrastructure and capacity required to reopen this station. But it’s still all a long way to go and not on the horizon any time soon unfortunately so this will not relieve our traffic problems in the short term.

One idea that a resident recently came up with is using our waterways to run a ferry between St Anne’s and Temple Meads, along the Feeder Road. This would be a great way of using a natural resource and would be a pleasant way to travel too. There are ferries that currently run from the centre to Beese’s and back but these mainly serve the needs of tourists rather than residents. We will investigate the viability of a commuter route to see if this could be a solution to some of the travel woes that beset Brislington so badly.

AMERICAN-STYLE PANCAKES WITH BLUEBERRY CARDAMOM Method For the compote, place the blueberries into a small saucepan with the sugar, water and pods (if using) Heat on a medium- high temperature until the fruit starts to soften and most of the liquid has evaporated. Leave in saucepan for the cardamom pods to continue to infuse. Sift the flour, salt and baking powder into a large bowl. Beat together the egg yolks then beat in the milk.

Ingredients For the pancakes: 115g plain flour Âź tsp salt 1 tsp baking powder 1 egg separated 145 ml milk 20g melted butter Blueberry and cardamom compote: 200g Frozen (defrosted) or fresh blueberries 3 cardamom pods 2-3 tsp. caster sugar 2 tbsp water

Make a well in the centre of the mixture and add the milk mixture, gradually drawing in the flour from the sides until all combined and the batter is the consistency of thick cream. Stir the melted butter into the mixture. Whisk the egg whites until stiff and fold into the batter. Heat a frying pan on a medium-high, when hot, drop spoonfuls of batter on to the surface keeping them well separated (5 should fit in a large frying pan). Cook for a couple of minutes. When the underside of the pancakes are light golden brown and bubbles rise to the surface, lift the pancakes with a fish slice, turn over and brown the other side. Keep warm in a tea towel, whilst cooking second batch. Serve with a dollop of natural yogurt and compote and a generous amount of fresh strawberries
