Weigh to go! Sarah makes light work of slimming and bags invite to prestigious event Weight-loss expert Sarah is celebrating after being recognised for the exceptional work he/she does to support people in South Bristol achieve their dream weight. She was one of around 100 high-achieving Team Developers from across the UK and Ireland invited to Slimming World’s ‘Team Developer Thank You Day’, at the organisation’s brand new head office building in Derbyshire. Sarah, a Consultant for the Whitchurch and Hengrove Slimming World groups, was invited to the event after being recognised by the company as a leading Team Developer. This means that as well as running his/her own weight-loss group, she is doing an outstanding job of supporting other Consultants in South Bristol to ensure excellent service to slimmers right across the area. And, as part of the day, Sarah, who became a Consultant after she graduated from the Slimming World Academy in 2013 was invited to discuss best practice and share her tips on delivering a first-class weight-management service. The guests also heard from motivational speaker and author Michael Heppell, who gave a talk on ‘How to be Brilliant’, as well some of the organisation’s most successful weight-loss Consultants from across the UK. They were also treated to a healthy banquet at the company restaurant. Sarah says: “It was a real honour to be invited to the special day at Slimming World HQ! The day itself was so inspirational from start to finish. To have had the opportunity to meet and share ideas with other top-performing Consultants and managers as well as hear from someone as motivational as Michael was an experience I’ll never forget. I left Derbyshire brimming with ideas and raring to get home, and there’s no doubt the insight will enable me to improve the support I give to other Consultants in the area, so that anyone who attends Slimming World in Bristol, including the members who attend my Slimming World group each week, get the very best possible service and support to achieve their weight-loss dreams. It’s great to be able to tell people in the local are that they have some of the best Slimming World groups in the UK and Ireland on their doorstep.
“Being recognised isn’t just a triumph for me but also for the 1000’s of members and Consultants in the South Bristol groups. They’re the ones who make each group the success it is, with their fabulous energy, the warm welcome they give to new members and the wonderful compassionate support they show to each other every week. That’s as well as their impressive weight losses while following Slimming World’s hunger-busting Food Optimising eating plan and getting more active, of course. They’ve lost an amazing 6211lbs this year, and each week as members lose weight I see them growing in confidence. I see them changing their health, becoming more active, trying out new foods and recipes, and finding the courage to take on challenges that they’ve always dreamed of. Members who arrive at group with their self-esteem at rock bottom start to hold their heads high and stand tall as they lose weight successfully and are encouraged and supported to make changes by the rest of the group.” Like all Slimming World Consultants, Sarah lost weight at a group herself and so knows just how valuable group support can be. Consultants receive in-depth training from the Slimming World Academy to help give their members the support they need to make long-term changes to improve their health and wellbeing as well as passing their new habits on to their family. Training includes the role of diet and activity in weight management. Crucially, it also includes training in how to help members to lift the guilt and shame they may feel as a result of struggling with their weight and help them to form healthy lifestyle habits. To join Sarah’s groups, which are held every Tuesday at 9.30am in Hengrove and Wednesday at 5.30pm or 7.30pm in Whitchurch, either pop along or give Sarah a call on 07879 443888.

Your garden in September Summer is coming to an end with the month of September generally being a cooler month than August. The days are becoming noticeably shorter, but the weather is, however usually warm and calm, giving us the ideal conditions to plant trees and shrubs. It’s a great time of the year to appreciate those long lasting plants that flower into autumn and if you have a fruit or vegetable patch you’ll be busy reaping the rewards of a hopefully successful harvest. Don’t forget - if you look forward to a great spring display of colour then now is the time to buy and plant your bulbs. Whatever you’re doing in your garden this month, be sure to make the most of the remaining warmth while you can.
The essential gardening jobs for A ugust Divide herbaceous perennials September is a good month to lift and divide summer-flowering herbaceous perennials. Most perennials need to be divided every three to five years as the plant can become too big for the border and become congested. Dividing will invigorate the plant and help to improve flowering and overall shape next year. Gently dig out the plant you want to divide, being careful not to damage the roots. Use a garden fork to separate the plant into two then shake of any excess soil and replant in your chosen spot as soon as possible. Take Perennial cuttings Take cuttings of perennials such as fuchsia, salvia, verbena, penstemon and chrysanthemum. It’s a great way to increase the number of plants you have for your summer display and there’s something really satisfying about seeing plants grow that you’ve created yourself. Find some strong growth that hasn’t flowered this year and cut a 5 - 10 cm stem just below a leaf joint.
10
Strip the leaves from the lower stem and leave one or two pairs at the top. Dip the end in hormone rooting powder and plant in pots of compost mixed with grit. Leave the pots somewhere bright and warm until rooted then re-pot into larger containers. Over winter in the greenhouse or conservatory. Plant spring flowering bulbs Bulbs make a fine display planted in containers and borders, especially Tulips, Snowdrops and Daffodils. They are one of the easiest and most rewarding plants to grow and are great for adding colour to spring borders. Tulips come in a huge variety of colours and bloom at a time of year when there is very little colour in the garden. snowdrops, appearing before the tulips, are one of the earliest flowering plants in the garden. When the snowdrops begin to fade, the daffodil begins to appear, with its cheery shades of yellow brightening the borders.
Enjoy your garden!
Looking good this month Hebe ‘Bowles’s Variety’ Why should you plant them? Hebe ‘Bowles’s Variety’ is an evergreen, rounded shrub with ovate, glossy green leaves that make a very attractive plant for borders and containers. Easy to care for, this Hebe is drought tolerant and flowers prolifically in summer. How should you plant them ? The variety of Hebe flowers best when planted in full sun. the addition of a good quality compost when planting is essential to prevent the roots becoming too dry. After flowering, sheer back dead flower stems to keep the plant looking full.

Movie Previews For September The summer might be coming to an end this September, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of eye-widening new movies to see at your local Cineworld. If anything, most of what you can see act as the perfect lead-up to Halloween. With buildings filled with mysterious clockwork, the return of the ultimate alien hunter, and the next story in the Conjuring universe. First up on September 6th, you’ll never step into a church or monastery the same way again after coming face-to-face with The Nun. The latest spin-off set in the wildly successful Conjuring franchise, demon nun Valak makes her return appearance in an eerie prequel story set in 1952 Romania. Then on September 12th, a new batch of ragtag mercenaries might soon find that they’ve met their match when The Predator returns to Earth to stalk them. Arnold Schwarzenegger barely survived in the original movie, but with a human/predator hybrid on the prowl, are humanity’s chances of survival doomed for good? Last up on September 21st, Jack Black and Cate Blanchett team up as the proprietors of a mysterious building holding a dark secret. Based on the book of the same name, The House with a Clock in its Walls looks to be spooktacular family fun heading into the scare season. The fun doesn’t stop there as Cineworld Bristol and Direct Local Magazine are teaming up once again to give readers a chance to win 2 free cinema tickets. Simply fill out the word.search on the next page Now sit back, take a deep breath, and relax, it’s all happening in Cineworld Bristol this September!

Festival Bristol
Last year it seemed that hardly a week would go by without reading that Bristol is the best place to live in Britain for this, that or the other reason. Recently, in August Bristol Harbourside was declared the second best place to live by those who claim to know these things. I think Belfast was voted the best place which made me think “how do these people judge?” I know that they have their lists such as closeness to shops and amenities, museums, theatres –dare I mention an Arena? but what else? One Bristol thing that I became aware of during the good weather of the summer of 2018, is the number of festivals most weekends that people can go to for free in our city, each of which is different, some city-wide, some geographically-centred but well worth visiting, some catering for certain interests, some for certain community or age groups. The three big ones that we all know about are the Harbour festival, PRIDE and the one that put Bristol on the festival map, the Bristol Balloon Fiesta, the largest meeting of hot air balloons in the country, if not across Europe, that celebrated its 40th birthday this year. Pride is my favourite, it has grown each year and Bristol Pride now rivals Brighton and in my opinion, beats London in terms of attendance and lively atmosphere.
But each community has its own delightful festival, run by volunteers that are well worth attending. The best known one in this category is St Paul’s that came back this year, but Upfest in Bedminster and Redfest in St George are to my mind equally as good. By all reports, Southmead Community Festival was excellent this year and is improving what it has to offer each year. On a smaller scale but really interesting for its historical focus is the St Ann’s Well pilgrimage held in Brislington where locals dress up in medieval costume, have pipers and story tellers, go to the blessed St Ann’s well following in the footsteps (hoofsteps perhaps as he went on horseback?) of Henry VIII and one of his wives, then revel for the rest of the day with dancing, barbeques and ale. By the way, isn’t revel a lovely word? “Let’s revel together” sounds a bit naughty to me, but certainly happy – how could anyone refuse! Talking of ale, the speciality interests are led by various kinds of alcoholic beverages, with the Cider festival leading the way, bur also lots of beer festivals. There’s been more opportunities than ever to try a growing range of Gins this summer, with gin festivals lasting all summer at bars like Watershed in the city centre. I have tasted peach gin (bit sickly) rhubarb gin (nice) ginger gin (very nice) and I forget which others. Coming up in September are the Downs Music festival – hope it doesn’t rain as usual, some excellent performers this year; the fascinating Doors Open Day on the weekend of 14 -16th September, not to be missed if you want to learn more about our fascinating city; and the ongoing Gromit Unleashed across the city, which isn’t a festival as such, but is giving a lot of people a lot of fun so it qualifies in my book. And finally a date for your diary that is not to be missed; this year is the 100th anniversary of the armistice. On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month 1918 the guns of the Great War, the First World War stopped firing. Please take time out of your busy life to remember those that died in all conflicts, the peace won by their sacrifice and pray that our current world leaders are committed to peace, not war. Then we can spend our time happily at festivals with our loved ones, not worrying about whether they are alive or dead. Article by Eileen Means

Councillors Surgery
There are 3 notable manor houses in Brislington Village, one is close to St Luke’s Church the second is on the Bath Road before the start of Article by Jos Clark Liberal Democrats Brislington Hill and the other is in Water Lane. But Brislington like many suburbs in Cities was once a for me the one that really stands out is Wick House small peaceful village, in some guides it was said in Wick Road. It was built around c1790 and is white to be the loveliest village in that part of what was in colour with castle wall effect at the front making then Somerset. Many wealthy merchants tired of the building look like a wedding cake. Sadly the the squalor of the City would move to the area and house has undergone many alterations over the build manor houses and even mansions. years and the inside is in need of renovation. The building is grade ll listed and there is now a plan to It surprises me how many of them are left and living refurbish it and turn it back into a residential care in full view but also invisible to us as we travel by. home for older people. I suppose the best known one is now the Arnos Court Hotel, with its black castle building which is now a pub but was the stable for the owner’s horses. They say there is a tunnel under the A4 that they used to use to bring the horses to the house.
Then there is Long Fox Manor which would not be out of place in an episode of Downton Abbey with its Palladian style architecture, tennis court and swimming pool. It was one of the very first mental hospital opened by Dr Edward Long Fox in around 1806 and operated as a mental hospital until 1951 where it then became a nurses home and now is residential flats.
I understand there are a number of planning applications in with the Council over the redevelopment of Wick House. It would be wonderful to see it returned to its former glory. We are lucky in Brislington to have so much history, from the romans to medieval pilgrims to the wealthy merchants its all there when you walk, cycle or drive around the area.
Its only a shame that the planners have done so much damage in the past to our local heritage and seem intent on doing more in the future with their road and volume house building plans.
