The Bell at Old Sodbury

The Bell Inn at Old Sodbury is a traditional family run pub, serving great food at a reasonable cost, and with friendly service. Before lockdown me and my other half had dinner there one evening in the week. We took a gamble on walking in with no reservation. The gamble paid off. We got sat down and ordered our food. To start I had chilli and garlic king prawns on a bed of crispy noodles. A lovely little starter, delicate in flavour with just enough of the sweet chilli and garlic dressing to give it an oriental flair. The other half ordered mushroom stroganoff on a grilled piece of horseradish soda bread. The sauce I thought was too heavy with paprika, there was no room for the other flavours to really come through. But the bread however was delicious! I’ve never seen horseradish bread before let alone eaten it. Freshly baked The flavours sang out like church choir on and tasting unique it was a lovely Christmas morning. Crunchy crackling and accompaniment. that sweet charred taste of the grill coated the thick fat like a comforting blanket Onto the main course. The one thing I love of goodness. The Jambalaya didn’t disappoint about this place, is it’s originality. There are either. Lightly peppered with crumbly chorizo, items on the menu that you won’t find on roasted peppers and tomatoes, it was light, anywhere else. There’s something for everyfragrant and perfectly cooked. The rice also one on this menu including the vegans!! We absorbed some of that delicious pork juice both had the Louisiana tomahawk pork, with chorizo Jambalaya and cornbread. Now being from the chop which gave it an extra edge. Served with a fresh slice of warm, sweet, in rural South Gloucestershire one doesn’t cornbread this was quite possibly the best really experience the tastes of the American meal I’ve had out this year so far. Deep South, so this was an opportunity I wasn’t going to pass on. The tomahawk itself Reviewed by Peter Abraham was a BIG pork chop. Cooked to perfection and tasted sublime.
