AMICUS CELEBRATES 10 YEARS WITH ITS THIRD STRAIGHT ‘OUSTANDING’ OFSTED RATING Independent fostering agency Amicus Foster Care has celebrated its 10th anniversary with its third successive ‘outstanding’ rating from Ofsted. The Government’s inspectorate has now rated Amicus, which is based in St Werburgh’s Community Centre, constantly ‘outstanding’ since it was established back in April 2009. In a double celebration, the fostering agency celebrated its 10th anniversary last weekend with an event at Bristol Zoo, attended by 150 foster carers, young people, staff, their families and friends. Since it started life in 2009, Amicus has placed more than 500 young people, a high proportion of whom had already experienced several placement moves before coming to the agency. It now prides itself on a high level, approximately 80 per cent, of long term placement stability, thanks partly to a care approach which encompasses wraparound therapeutic support, underpinned by Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy for children with trauma and attachment disorders. The Ofsted inspector particularly praised Amicus for its use of published research, saying that “as a result children and young people make sustained progress in their overall development”. Amicus achieved an ‘outstanding’ rating in each of its key categories: experience and progress of its young people; how well they are helped and protected; and the effectiveness of Amicus’ leaders

The report from social care inspector Linda Bond went on to say: “The skilled, highly qualified and stable staff team, along with experienced and loving carers, ensure that placement stability is maintained for most of the children and young people placed by the agency. “The agency is highly committed to helping children, young people and carers. Through exceptionally enduring professional relationships, the agency supports children and young people, carers and members of birth families under extreme stress to stay together.” Amicus Foster Care is based in Bristol and covers the city region as well as B&NES, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire. Currently one of 36 regional top tier foster care providers, it was set up by Nasareen Ahmed, who is supported by social care manager Trish McManamon and business services manager Mark Brady. Mr Brady, who organised last weekend’s 10th anniversary party, said: “We’re really proud of the work we do here and it’s great for us to mark a decade since we were founded at the same time as the quality of the services we provide was recognised again by Ofsted. “However, the real credit has to go to the foster carers and the children just as much as it does to us.” Founder of Amicus, Nasareen Ahmed said: “Our ethos is ‘every child should have a right to a childhood in a family setting’. Amicus Foster Care is forward thinking and we have stepped outside the box to develop bespoke services. We know that one size does not fit all and that’s one of the key elements of good foster care.” Ms Ahmed also reiterated a call on local people to come forward and help fill a shortfall of carers for children needing homes. Nationwide, some 5,000 fostering families are needed to fulfil the requirement and she said there were some common misconceptions about fostering. “People often think fostering is volunteer work,” she said, “but it’s not, it’s a vocation. There’s an allowance paid by agencies to foster carers which would match many salaries.

6

“With Amicus we also provide a range of benefits, such as training and supervision, therapy, and a beautiful holiday home available to all foster carers and children. It makes fostering a very attractive proposition for the right people to want to join our team.”

Your Garden In May Spring is well under the way now. The spring bulbs are fading and the herbaceous border is growing in leaps and bounds. The May days are longer and warmer and the risk of frost should have gone by now. The idea of getting out in the garden during the fine weather and ‘ticking things off the list’ becomes much more appealing. Spring flowering bulbs and plants will need clearing in preparation for summer bedding, and its promise of colour to come. But don’t get overwhelmed by those seemingly endless list of gardening jobs – here are our three most important…

Looking good this month... Geranium Why should you plant them?

Plant summer bedding May is the month to get your summer bedding started in borders and containers. If planting borders lift out old plants run a fork through the soil and add a good fertilizer before replanting summer plants.

Remove around a third of the oldest flowering stems – this will make the plant look better and encourage new growth to create a good display next year. Be sure to check large shrubs and hedges for nesting birds before you start chopping!

Try to fill pots and containers in the position they are going to stay – they can become heavy when filled! Water retaining crystals will help to reduce the amount of watering and keep the compost moist during warmer periods. Don’t forget to feed with fertiliser during flowering period.

Plant out young veg Marrow, courgette and sweetcorn are all ready to be sown in the greenhouse. The likes of brussel sprouts, kale, peas and swede should be okay covered outside.

Prune evergreen hedges and spring flowering shrubs There’s no better time to give evergreen hedges a trim to get them looking neat and tidy. Smaller hedges can be tackled with a pair of shears, but you may need a hedge trimmer for larger bushes. Prune any shrubs that flowered in spring as soon as they have finished flowering. Broom, forsythia and ribes all need pruning now.

10

If you have already own tomatoes, move them outside to harden them off. Keep them outside during the day and bring them back inside at night for two weeks to acclimatize them. If you have potatoes that are starting to emerge, pull a few inches of earth around the plant with a rake to give the plant more soil to grow.

Enjoy your garden!

Geraniums make popular bedding plants – either in the garden or in pots and hanging baskets. They thrive outdoors in the summer but are also great for using a houseplant. They look good planted in a group in a flowerbed all by themselves or mixed in with other annuals – the perfect plant for any spot that calls for a splash of colour throughout the season. How should you plant them? Geraniums need to be grown in well draining soil or if planting in pots a good quality free draining compost. They should be located in a bright spot in the garden that gets plenty of sunshine. Soil should be allowed to dry between watering to avoid root rot.

Bees behaving badly It's spring, and for honey bees, that means swarm season. But if you see a swarm on your property, there's no reason to be alarmed its normal to see swarms between April and August with June being the most likely Professional Bee Keeper Carl Flay says.

Here's what you need to know about honey bees this season: Panicking around a bee (or swarm of bees) is never a good idea what your parents taught you is true: if you don't move, you won't be stung (in most cases, anyway). When a bee lands on you, there is no need to panic. Rather than attempting to sting you, the bee is likely licking the salt from your skin, as it requires that salt to produce honey. However, it can sense your fear. That means, if you begin to panic, the bee may feel threatened and retaliate as a result.

g n i r p S

Honey bees don't sting very often Generally speaking, honey bees don't sting very often, because when they do, they leave behind the stinger, as well as part of their abdomen, and do not survive. Bees swarm when they are looking for a new home There are plenty of reasons why bees swarm, but they are all centred around the need to leave one hive in search of another home. Overcrowding, or a dislike for the queen bee, are two potential reasons why bees would choose to leave their current home so If you see a swarm, leave it alone Some people will see a swarm on their property and try to spray it with insecticide, or get rid of it in some way. Carl advises not to do this these bees are harmless and will not attack, especially when in swarming mode. Also, they will eventually go away on their own. Usually, bees will remain for four or five days in swarms. Please contact me if a swarm has settled in your garden and I will come collect and re home for free. AMERICAN-STYLE PANCAKES WITH BLUEBERRY CARDAMOM Method For the compote, place the blueberries into a small saucepan with the sugar, water and pods (if using) Heat on a medium- high temperature until the fruit starts to soften and most of the liquid has evaporated. Leave in saucepan for the cardamom pods to continue to infuse. Sift the flour, salt and baking powder into a large bowl. Beat together the egg yolks then beat in the milk.

Ingredients For the pancakes: 115g plain flour Âź tsp salt 1 tsp baking powder 1 egg separated 145 ml milk 20g melted butter Blueberry and cardamom compote: 200g Frozen (defrosted) or fresh blueberries 3 cardamom pods 2-3 tsp. caster sugar 2 tbsp water

Make a well in the centre of the mixture and add the milk mixture, gradually drawing in the flour from the sides until all combined and the batter is the consistency of thick cream. Stir the melted butter into the mixture. Whisk the egg whites until stiff and fold into the batter. Heat a frying pan on a medium-high, when hot, drop spoonfuls of batter on to the surface keeping them well separated (5 should fit in a large frying pan). Cook for a couple of minutes. When the underside of the pancakes are light golden brown and bubbles rise to the surface, lift the pancakes with a fish slice, turn over and brown the other side. Keep warm in a tea towel, whilst cooking second batch. Serve with a dollop of natural yogurt and compote and a generous amount of fresh strawberries

May has six bock busters lined up at Cineworld Just when you think that movies couldn’t get more epic than Avengers: Endgame, the month of May brings with it a slew of highly anticipated blockbuster releases to your local Cineworld. Be sure not to miss out on any of what’s coming! Kicking us off on 10th May is Pokémon: Detective Pikachu. This marks the first ever live-action Pokémon movie almost a full decade after 2000’s First Movie debuted in cinemas, following the adventures of the eponymous Pikachu voiced by Ryan Reynolds as he cracks the case plaguing Rhyme City. Expect to see such fan-favourites as Charizard, Mr Mime and more on the big screen.

Then, almost two weeks later, Disney’s live-action version of Aladdin arrives to transport us to a whole new world. Will Smith takes on the role originally popularised by Robin Williams in the 1994 classic, giving us a modern rendition of the genie of the lamp. Directed by Guy Ritchie, Aladdin paves the way for The Lion King and Maleficent 2 coming later this year.

Finally, Godzilla: King of the Monsters hits the big screen on 29th May, further broadening Legendary’s MonsterVerse by seeing the giant lizard do battle with other iconic creatures. If you prefer your animals fluffier, there’s always The Secret Life of Pets 2 on 24th May. The fun doesn’t stop there as Cineworld Yate and Direct Local Magazines are teaming up once again to give viewers a chance to win a prize. Just fill out the next page word search.

The Summer season is now properly getting started, so be sure to strap into your cinema seat!

Caught by the pension tax trap?

Avoiding the charge

Those looking to cash in part, or all, of their personal pension need to check they don’t pay too much tax.

The emergency tax code is still applied, but this triggers HMRC to adjust your tax code and send an updated version to your pension provider. Once the new code has been issued, any further, larger withdrawals are taxed correctly.

Pension freedom rules allow anyone aged 55 or over to access their personal pension funds, there are complex rules on how withdrawals are taxed. Problems can occur if you take a one-off lump sum – an ‘uncrystallised fund pension lump sum withdrawal’ (UFPLS) – perhaps to reinvest or to pay off debts. This differs from using a personal pension to provide a regular income, through a drawdown plan or annuity. Your pension provider will apply an emergency tax code, which assumes you are withdrawing the UFPLS on a monthly basis, unless it has an up-to date tax code for you.

As emergency tax codes are generally only applied the first-time people access their pension funds, one option is to make your first withdrawal a nominal amount, say £100.

You may be able to claim a rebate, either through your tax return at the end of the tax year, or HMRC if you need the rebate more quickly. If you are planning to withdraw a lump sum from your pension contact Bristol & West financial services. The Financial Conduct Authority does not regulate tax advice. Levels and bases of taxation and tax reliefs are subject to change and their value depends on individual circumstances. Tax laws can change.

For example, if you take a UFPLS of £10,000 at the start of the tax year, HMRC may assume you will take an income of £120,000 across the year from your pension and tax you accordingly. If it is a one-off withdrawal, you are likely to pay too much tax.

Fewer South Gloucestershire wards means fewer councillors in electoral carve-up May’s council elections will take place along new electoral lines. Thousands of people will be casting their vote for a new ward in the month of May. May’s council elections will take place along new electoral lines following a review by the Local Government Boundary Commission. The country is now split into different wards consisting of one nine three-councillor wards, 15 two-councillor wards, and four one-councillor wards. Commission chair Colin Mellors has said the redrawn boundaries would ensure ‘electoral fairness’ and reflected “community ties” in the South Gloucestershire area.

It also includes the whole parish of Stoke Lodge & The Common in Bradley Stoke North ward instead of dividing it between two wards. After local people and organisations argued such a split would not reflect local community ties. The commission also capitulated on a proposal to have two separate wards of Chipping Sodbury and Sodbury Vale, which residents argued would divide Chipping Sodbury from its surrounding communities, and instead create one large Chipping Sodbury and Cotswold Edge ward. These following wards have been scrapped: King’s Chase Parkwell Siston Cotswold Thornbury North Thornbury South & Alveston Serven Ladden Brook Westerleigh Almondsbury Downend Frenchay and Stoke Park Staple Hill Chipping Sodbury Bitton Oldland Common New wards that have been introduced Stoke Park & Cheswick Frenchay & Downend Staple Hill & Mangotsfield Bitton & Oldland Common Serven Vale Charlton & Cribs New Cheltenham Thornbury Chipping Sodbury and Cotswold Edge
