Mikes letter

First things first I hope everyone is staying safe and are well! There will be light at the end of the tunnel, a wise man said to me a fews days ago “ Be thankful for what we have and take each day as it comes never lose hope and stay positive” With the media ramping up our anxiety every day maybe we should avoid the news and focus on the positives like more family time at home, getting those DIY jobs done, gardening play some board games or even have a few quiet drinks at home. The world was so fast paced we had very little time for anything. . The other day I went shopping in the morning and on the drive home I found myself driving at a leisurely pace with some music playing singing out loud to myself, not because I have no cares in the world thats so far away from the true being self-employed. But because I’ll have no control over what happens next. So just enjoy this extended break where you can. Finally a message to our front line key workers especially the NHS bloody well done and a massive thank you to you all. #staypositive Till next month stay at home ,protect the NHS and save lives

This month..

Volunteer inspired to support charity following mum’s terminal diagnosis It was shortly after Jane Marshall’s mum was diagnosed with terminal breast cancer in 2014 that she decided to start supporting Marie Curie. At over eight months pregnant Jane headed out to take part in her first collection for the Great Daffodil Appeal – Marie Curie’s biggest fundraising campaign, held every March. Six years on, Jane from Stoke Gifford is Chair of the Marie Curie Five Stokes Fundraising Group, and volunteering has become a family affair with her husband and daughters Poppy (13), Daisy (11) and Olivia (4) often helping with charity collections and events. Jane is sharing her story in the hope it will inspire more people in Bristol and beyond to join her and her family in supporting the charity this March.

“Looking back, if we had managed to get mum home, we would have really needed the support of people like the Marie Curie Nurses. The care and support they provide can only continue with public support, so I really would encourage anyone considering volunteering to get in touch.” Marie Curie’s Great Daffodil Appeal is now officially underway, however, the fundraising team in Bristol and the surrounding areas are urgently calling for extra volunteers to lend a couple of hours to help them with supermarket collections due to take place throughout March.

Jane said: “Mum was diagnosed with terminal breast cancer in January 2014. She first had breast cancer in 1997 and again in 2006, both times it was treated, and she was given the all clear, but in 2014 it had spread to the lungs by the time it was discovered. “It may have been a moment of madness to start volunteering at just over eight months pregnant, but I suddenly felt compelled to support a charity that helps people with terminal illnesses – who we may well need ourselves one day. “I’ve always admired the work Marie Curie do, so I got in touch with the local team and signed up for a two-hour street collection, giving out daffodil badges in return for donations – and I’ve been supporting them ever since. I started because of mum, and I continue in her memory. “Mum moved in with us when her cancer started to progress in 2017. Later that year she was admitted to hospital to have calcium levels treated with a view to come home afterwards. “Sadly, after discussions with the Palliative care team at the hospital we realised mum didn’t have long and with my young children at home it might not have been the best option. The morning of 28 October 2017, I held her hand as she died. “When you collect for Marie Curie in public, at a supermarket or street collection, people often share stories with you about how Marie Curie cared for one of their loved ones. I have heard of the professionalism and expertise of the teams, 3am cups of tea and how the comfort the nurses bring not only to the patient but to their family means everything at such a difficult time.

Helen Isbell, Marie Curie Community Fundraiser for Bristol, said: “This year we are struggling to find enough volunteers to help with our supermarket collections for the Great Daffodil Appeal. We have collections throughout the whole month, so it’s not too late to get involved. “Collecting can be a lot of fun, you can do it on your own or with a friend and it’s a great way to give back to your local community, helping fund Maire Curie Nurses across Bristol. “We only ask our volunteers to do two-hour shifts, and you can sign up for just the one or as many as you’d like. Volunteers give out our iconic daffodil pins in return for donations. I would urge anyone who can spare a couple of hours to please get in touch.” Money raised from the Great Daffodil Appeal will help Marie Curie Nurses in Bristol and throughout the UK provide much-needed expert care to people with terminal illnesses, as well as support for their loved ones. How to sign up? To volunteer for Marie Curie’s Great Daffodil Appeal and give out the charity’s daffodils pins in return for donations, please visit mariecurie.org.uk/collect or contact Helen on Helen.Isbell@mariecurie.org.uk or 0117 9247 275.

Your Garden In April

Spring should be well under way this month with daffodils in full flow, their bright flowers enough to cheer up any day. Blossom trees will be blooming and fresh growth will be appearing on plants everywhere. April showers are common but don’t be deceived by sudden bursts of rainfall – you may need to start watering plants more regularly on dry, bright and windy days. With longer days and stronger sunshine growing conditions are continually improving and the warmer weather will give us all the opportunity to get busy in our gardens. Sow hardy annuals Hardy annuals are plants that can be sown from seed in the open ground. Get them off to an early start by sowing in pots or modules. Modular trays are also handy for sowing summer bedding plants such as marigolds, lobelia and petunias. Label each seed tray and once they are growing put them outside when the weather is warm day and night. Support climbers Climbing plants should be growing rapidly now, so will need ample support for new growth. Extend or replace trellis as necessary or add more wire to archers and tripods. New shoots will need to be gently encouraged sideways as they grow. This will send vital growth hormones doing the length of the shoot rather than just to the tip and so will encourage flowering all over the plant.

The rest of the garden will also be growing well now, so if you have been putting off carrying out any major pruning then now is the time to bite the bullet and get it done. Trees, shrubs and hedges should be cut back now before birds begin to nest. Care for your lawn The lawn will need regular mowing from now until autumn. Get some maintenance carried out to your lawn mower to ensure it stays in good running order – at the very least your mower blades should be newly sharpened ready for regular use. Keep the edges of the lawn tidy after mowing with a sharp pair of shears or a lawn edger. Don’t forget to give the lawn a spring feed after mowing if you haven’t got around to doing it yet. If a more drastic approach is needed to spruce up your lawn, sowing seeds for new lawns or over seeding dead patches can be carried out from mid-April onwards. Plant of the month: Rhododendron Why should you plant them? Ancient Greek meaning “Rose tree’ the rhododendron family includes azaleas. These stunning shrubs flower in all sorts of vibrant colours and can help brighten those difficult dark spots in your garden. Rhododendrons are grown for their spectacular flowers usually borne in spring, although some – the deciduous rhododendron or azaleas have good autumn colour. How should you plant them? In the wild rhododendrons are woodland plants, so they prefer dappled sunshine and can manage well in shade. They like plenty of water however and will not do well in boggy or badly draining soil, so drainage is key. Plant in autumn or spring and use ericaceous compost. 15

These little checks in advance, you might be able to save £££'s. Horn This one is nice and simple, but believe it or not, your car will fail its MOT if the horn is faulty, so make sure yours works…beep beep! Oil Make sure your oil is topped up to the correct level or the test centre can refuse to carry out the MOT on your vehicle. This is because they will be unable to test your emissions. How to: Grab a rag and pop your bonnet. Locate the dipstick (usually with a yellow or orange plastic handle) and pull out. Give it a wipe and put back in. Remove one more time and check the reading. There should be a min and max mark at the end of the dipstick. If it’s below the minimum then top up with manufacturer approved oil. Oil and filter changes are recommended every 10,000 miles or 12 months (check your vehicle handbook to be sure) – basically whichever comes first. These can be done quite easily at home and require minimal equipment but be warned…it can be messy. Exterior Lights According to the RAC, 18.9% of cars fail their MOT for something as minor as a blown bulb. It’s a super easy check to do by switching on all your lights and walking around your car to see if they’re all working. If any don’t work, you can replace these yourself for a fraction of what a garage will charge. When it comes to the brake lights, you may need to enlist some help from a friend or family member. Alternatively, a reflective surface such as a window would be just as effective. Number plates Not only do your number plates need to be visible and in good condition but they also need to be up to DVLA standard. That means no patterned backgrounds or italic fonts and even the letter spacing must be correct. If your number plate doesn’t conform to these rules then it’s an instant MOT fail as well as a possible £1,000 fine if caught by police.

16

Warning lights Check that all the dashboard lights come on when you start the car then disappear after a few seconds. If any of the lights stay lit then arrange to have your motor to be checked over. If you feel confident, you can try resolving them yourself eg. If the oil light is on, is your oil fully topped up? Tyres On average, 10% of motorists get an MOT failure due to their tyres not being up to scratch. Spend a bit of time checking each tyre carefully for lumps, bulges or cuts and double check that the tread is road legal. A simple way check the tread depth is to do the 20p test. If you put a 20p into your tread and the inner edge can’t be seen then your tyres are legal. If you can see the edge then you will need to think about getting new tyres. Clean car Your car won’t fail because it’s a little messy but if it’s filthy inside or out (or both) then the garage can refuse to test it on health and safety grounds. Research found that over 1,000 drivers were refused an MOT because their vehicles were that dirty or inaccessible. So when you take your car in, make sure that both number plates are visible, the lights are clean and that the interior is clutter free. Windscreen Apart from the obvious cracks and chips, another common failure is having an obscured driving view with things like hanging air fresheners, stickers and phone cradles being the biggest culprits. Make sure these objects are removed before your MOT to prevent an unnecessary fail. Also, its good practice to ensure your wiper blades are in good condition and your screen wash is fully topped up. Mirrors To pass your MOT, you need to have a minimum of one offside mirror and one interior mirror but its good practice to have all three in working order this means no cracks that impair your view. If you do have any issues with your mirrors, try to get these replaced before your MOT giving you time to shop around and getting the best quote.

If your home is feeling a bit tired, you can still make your home look amazing without breaking the bank. We’ve found some tips for you to try out.

Hang up some art

From framed family photos to DIY prints by the kids, an artwork wall can really make your house feel more like a home. The key is knowing how to hang up your picture and making them fit into the space you’ve chosen so keep playing around until it looks just right.

Update old fixtures

You’d be surprised how cheap it is to swap in some old fixtures for some new shiny ones without having to go crazy on the £££s. Door knobs, drawer handles and light switches can become to look quite tired due to daily wear and tear, so you’ll be surprised how much this little change and impact the room.

Swap your throw pillows

Change out your old throw pillows for some colourful and fuller ones to make your living space feel like it’s straight out of an interior design magazine. If you don’t want to replace all your pillows, just buy new crisp and funky covers instead.

Let in the light

A well-lit room is very important if you want the space to feel inviting. Take care not to block natural light sources, but if that isn’t possible, having good light sources can be a great substitute. Try adding a table lamp and up-lighters around the room to see the difference immediately.

Throw in a mirror or two

Make your space look even bigger by hanging up some strategically placed mirrors. Using a large or floor length mirror will reflect the room back at you making it feel twice the size – definitely cheaper than adding an extension!

Clean and clutter-free

With many people leading increasingly busier lives, sometimes the cleaning chores fall by the wayside. However, if you put off the dusting one too many times or leave the pile of magazines to grow on the coffee table, your home can start to feel dingy and unloved.

Update your colour schemes

Add some natural colour to your walls, choose greys, creams, light shades of green or blue etc. Wood flooring can also match most natural colour schemes so go wild and experiment with different types of flooring even carpets and rugs.

So clear the clutter, give it a good clean and enjoy that ‘new home’ feel again.
