Happy New Year to all our readers lets hope 2021 brings better things for everyone! I hope everyone had a great little Christmas and enjoyed the restricted celebrations that we had for the new years eve. So it’s time once again to set those new years resolutions that we all break with in week 1, maybe this year things will be different? probably not lol.. 2021 does however bring more tougher restrictions for Bristol as we leave tire 2 and enter Tier 3 and yet more restrictions on what we can do with our friends and family. However there is some light at the end of the tunnel as the Oxford vaccine gets approved so this can only mean more lives will be saved over the coming months shouldn’t? Anyway lets raise a glass to 2021 and hope it bring some sort of normality to the nation. We are strong together Bristol! lets defeat this hidden threat this year!

MW FUNERAL DIRECTORS GO THE EXTRA MILE
“One solution is webcasting of the service, which is now very common, but even that can feel lonely and remote to someone who was very close to an individual.
A Bristol funeral directors is going the extra mile to enable people to pay their respects while there are restrictions on attending funeral services due to Covid-19.
“One solution we have found is to put some more time into the journey to the service and work with families so that there is a timed route, often with pauses and stopping places where people can stand at the roadside or in a special place – such as a sports club – and pay their respects.
Routes to cemeteries and crematoriums are being planned by MW Funeral Directors so that those prevented from attending a service or self-isolating can pay their respects. Hearses are able to stop at significant points where family members live, social clubs or sports grounds with mourners able to socially distance while paying their respects, and often applauding. MW Funeral Directors cover the whole of Bristol, South Gloucestershire and further afield, planning and directing burials and cremations to the individual requirements of families.
“It is proving very comforting for families and makes more of an event before then they go to their laptop or computer to watch the service.” MW Funeral Directors say it is important to work alongside families and friends of the deceased to put together a memorial that will live on in the hearts of guests for many years and this should not be curbed by the current restrictions.
Ella Abbott, funeral director, said: “It seems certain that sadly the restriction of a maximum of 30 people at a funeral is going to be with us well into 2021. We have always arranged funerals in a truly bespoke way, to allow for personalisation and to meet the needs of the family and friends of the person who has died.
The team have organised funerals themed for special interest groups, such as bikers, environmentalists or animal lovers and for those of all faiths and of none.
“It is proving very difficult for some families to decide who should come to the service and how it will be organised and we have been working with them to find ways to ensure that the whole funeral and service honours the person who has passed away.
8
Said Ella Abbott: “There is a lot of flexibility around funerals. Sometimes cost can be an issue for a family so we keep our basic packages for a funeral early in the day when crematorium fees are low at £1,995 and there are even options for unattended funerals. “But in these difficult days it seems to be more important than ever for families to mark the event in a memorable way and we work with them to ensure that happens despite all the restrictions we all now face.”

Barratt boosting wildlife with more nature friendly housing for Bristol, Somerset and Gloucestershire New ÂŁ1m initiative launching in Spring 2021 supporting communities to help nature thrive
Barratt Developments and wildlife charity RSPB are raising the bar for nature friendly housing across Bristol, Somerset and Gloucestershire by announcing a new goal for their ongoing partnership. By 2023 Barratt will further prioritise wildlife on all of its new developments by creating dedicated space for local biodiversity conservation, installing a range of wildlife friendly features and following expert RSPB advice. Beyond 2023 the goal is to have at least 10% more wildlife habitats in and around developments, delivering a clear biodiversity net gain. Within two years every new development in Bristol, Somerset and Gloucestershire will be provided with the guidance and tools to include wildlife friendly features into its public open spaces including plans to create climate resilient landscapes. More trees will be planted each year and the company is transitioning to become peat free. Every new show home garden will follow strict RSPB guidance which prioritises wildlife through specialist planting and landscaping, with at least 50% of the gardens to receive special RSPB commendations. Many of the new developments will also feature more hedgehog highways and swift nesting sites.
10
Coat Grove, a development in Martock of 120 two, three and four-bedroom homes, features RSPB Gold standard designed gardens which include a range of features from bird and bat boxes to hedgehog highways, ponds and habitats for frogs, toads, newts and more. Barratt Developments, parent company of Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes, is currently building thousands of homes across the South West, including at Ladden Garden Village, Yate and Northfields Park, Patchway. Having already installed hundreds of the swift bricks now its goal is to install several thousand around the country. As part of the ongoing partnership, Barratt is also investing ÂŁ1m in an exciting new project with the RSPB to support people to help nature thrive in their gardens, balconies and eventually their community greenspaces. Back in 2018 Barratt became the first housebuilder to target 10 cities around the country with swift nesting bricks developed with the RSPB.
Launching in Spring 21 and called Nature on Your Doorstep, the project will deliver the resources, connections and inspiration that will empower people to create their own havens for wildlife where they live. The project will focus on the development of digital resources and an online community that brings people together to share their stories, tips and advice on the best ways to look after nature near them.
With local nature habitats in serious trouble and 40 million birds having vanished from the skies in the last half century, every community has a role to play in tackling the ecological and climate emergency. The actions taken for nature by individuals or communities together, such as welcoming wildlife into gardens or greenspace, will make a really big difference. Ian Menham, West regional director for Barratt Developments said: "As the country's leading national sustainable housebuilder looking after nature is integral to the work that we continuously do through our partnership with RSPB. This is why we are committing to boosting wildlife and building nature friendly developments across the South West. And, through the exciting new ÂŁ1m project with the RSPB, we look forward to developing new digital resources that will connect and inspire homeowners to help nature on their doorstep."

Your garden in January
The garden in January needs to be prepared for all sorts of weathers, and if you’ve been following our advice over the last few months, your hard work is done for now. Most plants are dormant this month as they sleep through the cold weather, but there are still a few things to do in the garden. Spring is just around the corner and work can be done to prepare for the warmth of the new season. When its not too cold, beds and borders can be dug over and lawn edges can be repaired and Plant of the Month Helleborus Why should you plant them?
The essential gardening jobs for January Protect plants
Dig over bare ground
January is known for cold frosts and bitter winds so plants will need protecting. If you haven’t already done so, ensure protective fleeces are in place on tender plants over-wintering outdoors.
Run a fork through your vegetable patch or flower beds. This will help to aerate – getting air into the soil is important because plant roots need oxygen. Choose a dry day when the soil isn’t too wet. Don’t break your back breaking down large lumps of soil. Keeping them large can help air circulate and any later frosts will break them up.
Lift containers up onto pot feet – if water isn’t draining away the soil can become waterlogged.Wet compost can rot roots and cause pots to crack in frost. Remove snow from tree and shrub branches by knocking with a broom. Even a small amount of snow can add a lot of weight to branches, causing them to snap.
12
Feed the birds Natural food sources for birds are in short supply during the winter. Give them a helping hand by putting food out for them. Keep the food topped up but not full all the time – little and often is best.
Popular because they flower in cold winter and early spring, Hellebores herald the start of the New Year bringing a touch of colour to the garden. Commonly know as ‘Christmas Roses’ they are easy to grow and very hardy. They produce attractive flowers and their leaves create a perfect evergreen backdrop to spring flowering bulbs. How should you plant them? Plant in shady herbaceous borders and the areas between deciduous shrubs to give an early splash of colour. Happy in dappled shade they should be planted in rich, heavy soil that won’t dry out in the summer. ideal planting companies include Snowdrops, Primrose, Cornus and Mahonia.
Top tips for achieving your 2021 goal A new year often brings with bit thoughts of a fresh start, this is especially true in the health of business where after the indulgence of Christmas new health goal are particularly popular. However many New Year’s resolutions don’t make it to February. So if you’ve already started your goals or are planning on starting something soon, here are just two ideas that may help you achieve them in 2020.
It is always better to have something to aim for than heading off without plan.
Keep an accurate track of your results. So much emphasis is put on what the scales say, but I find this way of measuring a person’s progress to be completely flawed and highly disheartening. What are we actually trying to measure? FAT! So why do we weigh the bones, the hair, the skin, the muscles and the fluids all together and make determining decisions on health based from the outcome? Be realistic with you goal in short term. For men the best indicators of how you’re Drastic changes in diet can occasionally doing is to measure around the stomach, for bring a sudden improvement but if this isn’t women it’s around the thighs and buttocks, a healthy and maintainable method of losing but of course you can do both and various weight - the impact of the change can very quickly plateau leading to a sharp return to old other areas for even greater accuracy. If you find yourself with goals that are too demanding in short term, give yourself a more realistic time frame and never be afraid to adjust your goals once you’ve set them.

New research shows people in Gloucestershire more likely to make life-changing decisions as result of pandemic More than two thirds of people (71%) in Gloucestershire say the Covid pandemic has made them more likely to make big decisions in their lives in order to take back control, according to new research carried out by leading housebuilders Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes.[i]
This is backed up by the new research which found that 31% of people in Gloucestershire said the pandemic has made them more likely to move house in the next year or more. Louise Ware, sales director for Barratt David Wilson Homes South West says:
"The Covid pandemic restrictions seem to have made many people in Gloucestershire more likely to make life-changing decisions, such as moving house or getting married, in an effort to take back some control. This is also borne out by what we're seeing in our sales offices, with enquiries for new homes Conducted in counties across the South West dramatically up on last year, even during times which are traditionally quieter for including Gloucester, the research sought to housebuilders." establish people's greatest concerns about life and home planning as a result of the pandemic. Added to this, 43% of respondents said time spent with life ‘on hold' in 2020 has actually accelerated big life decisions such as moving house, getting married or divorced, starting a family or having more children, or starting a business.
53% of people in Gloucestershire said not knowing when it would all be over was one of the greatest challenges and 44% of respondents across the county found not being able to make long term plans one of the hardest things. 89% of people who said they struggled with not being able to make plans admitted to feeling frustrated and 1 in 12 said it made them angry. Despite the challenges, over two thirds (68%) of people in Gloucestershire said they had enjoyed more time at home this year, with 17% saying they intended to continue spending more time there once the pandemic is over. Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes are currently building new communities across Gloucestershire and the South West including Great Oldbury, Stonehouse and Rosewood Grange, Hardwick. The five star housebuilders say the surge in interest in buying a new home following the first lockdown this summer has continued even into the usually quieter pre-Christmas period. Barratt and David Wilson Homes have seen 51% more people across the South West registering their interest in a development this year (July to November) than in the same period last
14
Andrea Pilgrim, sales director at Barratt Homes Bristol added: "2020 has been such a challenging year and it's understandable that people in Gloucestershire are keen to be able to look forward to something more positive in their future. Our research shows that home has never felt so important, with the majority of people admitting they enjoyed more time at home this year, despite the restrictions. Our sales teams are here to help people take those first steps to exploring the possibility of a brand new home and we offer a range of support from the new Help to Buy scheme to part exchange to help make the process as easy as possible".

PARENTS DELIGHTED AS PRE-SCHOOLS RECEIVE FACELIFT AND IMPLEMENT NEW POLICIES
Two pre-schools in Downend and Stoke Lodge have received praise from parents after a new management team implemented improved policies and invested in refurbishment for each setting. The Bright Sparks pre-schools, located at Stanbridge Primary School and Stoke Lodge Primary School, changed hands earlier in the year and managers say the feedback from parents has been incredible. The Stoke Lodge setting has expanded its remit and now caters for children from three-months old. The all-new baby room has recently been unveiled complete with new equipment. The new baby room has been fully refurbished and filled with age-appropriate resources and educational play equipment. It also provides cots so babies can sleep during their nursery sessions. The pre-school has also been renovated along with the Bright Sparks setting in Downend, which is currently only catering for children aged 2+. Bright Sparks’ Managing Director, Vicky Ashbolt, said: “It is wonderful to unveil our all new baby room at our Stoke Lodge setting.
18
“We will be providing quality childcare for babies in the area, our dedicated baby team are fantastic at helping children to settle in our lovely home-from-home environment. We take pride in our caring approach to sleep, weaning, teething and everything else that comes with looking after babies and we will always take the parents’ lead on meeting their child’s individual needs. “The new room is beautiful and is filled with really high-quality resources to encourage babies’ curiosity and imagination. We look to foster children’s intellectual, physical, emotional and social development in everything we do.
“We very much hope that expanding the age range we cater for will be of benefit to parents with older children at the pre-school or primary school, who will be able to access childcare all in one place.” Both pre-schools have also introduced extended opening times, a flexible booking system and year-round provision to better suit the needs of local families and feedback from parents has been positive.
“We knew these new policies would go down well with parents but we had no idea we would receive the amount of positive feedback we have. The refurbishment of the settings has also been much appreciated. Each nursery feels much lighter and fresher and the children have enjoyed exploring the new resources.
“Our all new flexible booking system will mean that busy working parents will be able to book the sessions they need for their little ones and our extended opening hours will help those who perhaps don’t work standard working hours,” said Vicky.
“Attending nursery offers such great benefits for children including social, emotional, physical and educational development and for babies, who have unfortunately been growing up in lockdown, being amongst peers is a really important and lovely experience.” For more information about Bright Sparks visit https://www.brightsparkspreschool.com/
