13. Editors words So as the Cliff Richard song goes “We’re all going on a summer holiday” Yes folks summer is finally here and according to the weather forecasters its going to be a good one but don’t take my word on that. All though you know what summer means school holidays! Look out parents those little angels become the bane of our life especially if you are working parents trying to shuffle those shift patterns around whilst the company rules say no time off in July/August lol. Yes most of us have been their looking for that best mate to take care of your kids when the boss says no! Or if you are lucky you can send them off to the grandparents or finally that sicky we have all pulled. Either way the fun starts on or around the 19th July. With this in mind we have put some of the fun things to do in your area in our whats on page. We hope this helps out to keep them occupied. Finally Brexit will it ever happen? Let us know your thoughts..

Why Thornbury is one of the best places to live in Bristol Thornbury has always been a popular place in the south west – and moving there just became a whole lot easier. With its old-world feel, views across the amazing Bristol channel and an excellent array if local amenities, the bustling market town of Thornbury is popular for people looking for that community feeling in the small town whilst being on the city’s door step. The town is best known for its beautiful castle. The Tudor structure was begun in the early 1511 as a home for Edward Stafford, the ill-fated Duke of Buckingham, who was beheaded later for treason. Following the Duke’s history, the castle was confiscated by king Henry VIII, who stayed there for 10 days in 1535 with equally ill-fated Anne Boleyn. After the English Civil War, the castle had fell into despair, but was then renovated in 1824 by the Howard family. It is now a stunning 5-star hotel and restaurant set in manicured grounds – and servers a mean afternoon tea. The rest of the town is really that old, in fact there’s some 20 and 21st century houses, but its heart comprises mainly period buildings lining the wide main shopping street.
6
Park, sports and leisure Besides the town having 7 churches, it is a thriving local scene for the community interests, including almost a dozen musical and dram groups, as well as other activities such as sports clubs; scouts, air and sea cadets, plus history, charity, social and environment organisations. Created by the Thornbury and District Heritage Trust as a Millennium project, the heritage trail is a walk encompassing the towns historic buildings and signed with 40-way markers. If it is raining, in the nearby village of Milbury Heath is an indoor soft play centre for the little once, while the leisure centre has a pool and a gym. For less inclement days, you can try the pay-and-play golf at Thornbury Golf Club, The Tump play area, Mundy Playing Fields or the skate park. With all these activities going on the town also has it annual mop fair, a carnival, and arts festival. The Town also hosts to a community radio station, GLOSS FM, which broadcasts 365 days a year on its webcast and twice a year on 87.7 MHz FM. The community website has lots of useful information about the town and more…… Eating and drinking Restaurants include fine dining at Ronnie’s Eastern cuisine at Thai Basil and Great Wall, mezze at the Royal George, Indians Mogul Sharmrat, Mumtaz and Romy’s Kitchen, plus the town has lots of cafes and pubs to visit as well. Thornbury Township, Pennsylvania, USA was established in 1687 and named by George Pearce after Thornbury, Gloucestershire the native town of his wife, ann.

Your Garden In July
Fling the doors open to the garden and head outside! Summer is here and what better way to spend your free time than being outside and enjoying your beautiful flower filled garden. Keep plants looking good by regularly deadheading and you’ll enjoy a longer display of bloom. Make sure you keep new plants well hydrated to get them through those long, hot days and hoe off those pesky weeds, which can thrive in the sunshine. Although this still can be a busy time in the garden, don’t forget to find the time to sit back and relax so that you can enjoy all the hard work you’ve put in to achieve your beautiful display.
The essential gardening jobs for July FEED, WEED, AND DEADHEAD Adding a liquid feed to your weekly watering regime will give a much needed boost to hanging baskets, container and borders helping them to produce more flowers and, in some cases encouraging a second flourish of flowers late in the season. Bedding plants, roses and many other perennials will also benefit from regular deadheading.
With Hanging baskets a bit of common sense goes a long way. Try lifting a container or basket. Does if feel light or under watered? How does the compost look? Is it pale and shrunken away from the sides? Dig into the compost with your fingers. Does it feel dry? It should be moist but not dripping wet. During prolonged dry spells, water at least once a day.
PLANT OF THE MONTH: Salvia
SPEND SOME LAZY HOURS IN THE GARDEN
How should you plant them? Plant in full sun, with very well drained soil, and water well when it’s dry. Trim in the spring to maintain shape and deadhead once the flowers start to fade.
A member of the sage family. Salvias are diverse group of plants ranging from annuals to herbaceous perennials and herbs Why should you plant them? With flowers that are popular with wildlife, they not only deliver colour and fragrance but are also great at attracting bees and butterflies. Salvias are long flowering with the potential to put on a great show from June through much of the summer and in to autumn.
This will prolong the flowering period making the garden more attractive and will also prevent the plants from putting their energy in to seed heads. Simply pinch off the fading flowers, or for tougher branches use secateurs. Don’t forget to keep weeds down they steal vital moisture and nutrients. Kill them by regularly hoeing borders and vegetable patches. Larger weeds should be dug out or pulled up by hand.
8
After all your hard work, enjoy the sunshine and laze in your garden.

The “Registered Office” This may seem like a dry and mundane subject but how many people use their home as their registered office? It is convenient – granted, but it has risks. TV Bailiff star Matthew Heighway, a High Court Enforcement Officer, was cleared of wrongdoing in a case where he gained access to a private house to remove assets to the value of £10,000. The reason he had gone to the house was it was the Registered Office of a failed and closed down hotel group.
The simple way to avoid any such difficulties and ensure all of the Company statutory paperwork is completed, is use a third party Registered Office such as an accountant. This way the possibility of any such bailiff action to your personal and private property is eliminated. TSA Chartered Certified Accountants are the Registered Office for multiple companies providing a mailing address for Companies House documentation, looking after and processing statutory returns as required, and providing that all important buffer between Directors and government agencies.
TSA are “personable” and “friendly” accountants and business advisors who will ensure you are set up properly and safely. www.tsabusinessadvisors.co.uk 01179235394 enquiries@tsabusinessadvisors.co.uk

So whether your a web-slinger or king of the jungle July has some fantastic movies lined up!
Spider man Far from Home
The month of July sees the summer movie season get well underway at your local Cineworld, with everything from technologically staggering Disney remakes to comedic zombie romps ready for you to witness. There’s something for everybody hitting the big screen, so let’s dive in. First up, Spidey swings his way back into an Avengers-less world as part of Spider-Man: Far From Home on July 2nd. The superhero sequel sees Peter Parker and his group of friends alive and unsnapped, this time visiting a host of European capital cities as part of a school trip. It isn’t long before Spider-Man’s web-swinging efforts are needed again, however, teaming up with Nick Fury to take down the otherworldly Elementals running rampant.
The Lion King
Then, on July 12th, it’s back-to-back laughs in the form of deadpan Zom-Com The Dead Don’t Die and R-rated action comedy Stuber. The former will have you belly aching with laughter at the efforts of a local police force taking on the zombie hordes, while the Dave Bautista/Kumail Nanjiani team-up sees a lowly Uber driver and police detective hilariously on the trail of a terrorist. Finally, it’s what Disney fanatics have been waiting for. Jon Favreau’s The Lion King sees the return of James Earl Jones as Mufasa, welcoming newcomers Donald Glover, Beyoncé and Seth Rogen as Simba, Nala and Pumba respectively. Can you feel the love tonight? You will when it releases this July 19th. The fun doesn’t stop there as Cineworld Yate and Direct Local Magazine are giving readers a chance to win 2 free cinema tickets. Simply fill out the next page word search. Grab your popcorn and settle in with these great movies coming to Cineworld in July.

MAKING BRISTOL EVEN
BETTER
Most people look back and remember their school holidays as some of the best times of their lives. Going on trips and days out, times with their friends and family, free of school work and responsibility, maybe attending a holiday camp or activities week! What isn’t to like? Unfortunately for many young people growing up in Bristol today, this is not their experience. Underlying poverty and community issues have been exacerbated by the economic crisis and the change to Universal Credit. This has left many families unable to afford access to these opportunities, and in many cases has even undermined their ability to access basic needs such as food and getting 3 meals a day. So, rather than looking forward to the school holidays they have become for many a stressful time, when families who already struggle find it even harder to provide for their children and young people.
18
Families experiencing financial pressures are not only at greater risk of food insecurity, family stress, isolation, and poor health during the holidays, but they also miss out on the so-called social “enrichment activities” such as trips, sporting, cultural and learning activities enjoyed by better-off children. So, the problem is clear and easy to define, and luckily so is the solution, but we need your help to enable us to achieve it! When you sign up to the Better Bristol Lottery you will be helping us to alleviate food poverty for young people. Together we’ll be able to help young people BREAK FREE from: Being hungry during the school holidays or being unable to cover the costs of lunches during these times. • • • • •
Having nothing to do during the holidays. Having nowhere to go other than staying at home or out on the streets. Having no-one to talk to. Having to pay for high quality services. Screens and boredom.

Caught by the pension tax trap?
Avoiding the charge
Those looking to cash in part, or all, of their personal pension need to check they don’t pay too much tax.
The emergency tax code is still applied, but this triggers HMRC to adjust your tax code and send an updated version to your pension provider. Once the new code has been issued, any further, larger withdrawals are taxed correctly.
Pension freedom rules allow anyone aged 55 or over to access their personal pension funds, there are complex rules on how withdrawals are taxed. Problems can occur if you take a one-off lump sum – an ‘uncrystallised fund pension lump sum withdrawal’ (UFPLS) – perhaps to reinvest or to pay off debts. This differs from using a personal pension to provide a regular income, through a draw-down plan or annuity. Your pension provider will apply an emergency tax code, which assumes you are withdrawing the UFPLS on a monthly basis, unless it has an up-to date tax code for you.
As emergency tax codes are generally only applied the first-time people access their pension funds, one option is to make your first withdrawal a nominal amount, say £100.
You may be able to claim a rebate, either through your tax return at the end of the tax year, or HMRC if you need the rebate more quickly. If you are planning to withdraw a lump sum from your pension contact Bristol & West financial services. The Financial Conduct Authority does not regulate tax advice. Levels and bases of taxation and tax reliefs are subject to change and their value depends on individual circumstances. Tax laws can change.
For example, if you take a UFPLS of £10,000 at the start of the tax year, HMRC may assume you will take an income of £120,000 across the year from your pension and tax you accordingly. If it is a one-off withdrawal, you are likely to pay too much tax.
