COUNCILLORS SURGERY By Jos Clark, Liberal Democrat We are off to the Polls (yet again) and many people are rightly fed up with it. This Parliament is less than 2 years old and Teresa May has decided to waste even more taxpayer’s money on election that no one except the Conservatives want. Yet, unlike the vast majority of general elections over the last 40 years or so this one is really important. The future direction of our Country, its prosperity our relationship with our closest neighbours and allies and the very United Kingdom staying united and a kingdom are all at stake. The Conservatives want to put all that at risk and they are asking for us to give them a blank cheque to do whatever they like over Brexit. Teresa May launched this general election by saying she wanted it to be the Brexit election, hasn’t there already been enough division in the Country without her pouring oil on troubled waters? But for her to say this election is about this one issue alone, masks the deep rooted financial and policy problems that the Country faces.
Even here in our part of Bristol we have lost a GP surgery, forcing thousands of patients to find an alternative which will place greater strain on our existing local medical services. Our social care is at least 2 billion short of the funds it needs, with nothing forthcoming from Mrs May or her Government. It is said that a civilised society is judged by the way it treats its sick and its elderly, this Government is sadly lacking on both counts. Parents in some parts of the Country are being asked by schools to fund books and other educational activities whilst Mrs May finds £500m to fund a grammar school policy that no one asked for and is seen by many as divisive. A majority of local Councils, including my own here in Bristol are sinking under a wave of budget cuts that have seen plans to cut a fifth of the workforce, the threat of Library and other closures and not enough money to even cut the grass in our parks. These are the issues at this election, Mrs May is keen to tell us that the economy is safe with her. But we are already struggling to pay for decent public services, which makes the Conservative’s decision to pursue a ‘hard’ brexit against the biggest market in the World as perplexing.
Her Government has presided over the worse situation in the NHS for years, with nearly all NHS’s trust in the Country facing budget cuts, patients waiting longer than 4 hours in A&E and GP’s retiring at an alarming rate.

At breakfast this morning, a woman said to her husband: “My memory is getting really poor, I went upstairs yesterday to get something and by the time I got to the top of the stairs I had forgotten what I was going for.” The husband said: “How bad is your memory?” She responded: “Sorry, what were we talking about?” Old jokes are always the best, but early signs of a loss of memory are an uncomfortable reminder of the ageing process and certainly no joke. Some of us will inevitably get dementia or other debilitating conditions that could result in the loss of mental capacity. Do you know you what happens if you or your partner becomes unable to make decisions for themselves due to old-age memory issues or dementia? Potentially you can find yourself in a position where you cannot pay for services or make decisions, without lawyers and something called the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) being involved. It’s an expensive and long-winded process. That is, unless you have written a legal document called a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) in advance of your loss of mental capacity.
The Citizens Advice Bureau website says: “You should make an LPA if you have been diagnosed with, or think you might develop, an illness which might prevent you from making decisions for yourself at some time in the future. “The kinds of illness which might prevent you from making decisions for yourself include:
dementia mental health problems brain injury alcohol or drug misuse the side-effects of medical treatment any other illness or disability.
“You must make an LPA whilst you are still capable of making decisions for yourself. This is called having mental capacity” At Legally Secure, we are experts in writing Lasting Powers of Attorney and talking you through the pitfalls. Whilst no one wants to think about the potential of problems in later life, writing an LPA could save you and your family considerable cost and grief in the not too distant future.

DIY SOS & Caddy Windows help bring Ryan Pollard home 6th April 2017 may not be a day that will stick in the mind for many people, but for the Pollard family in Hartcliffe it was a day that they will remember for the rest of their lives. Ryan Pollard has been in Gloucester Royal Hospital for the past 5 years after suffering a severe brain condition in 2012. His parents have been travelling to and from Gloucester on an almost daily basis to see Ryan, something that has been very tough for Ryan and all his family involved. DIY SOS decided that Hartcliffe and the Pollard family were the perfect location for their latest episode of the Big Build and Caddy Windows were lucky enough to be one of 2 window companies chosen from the whole of the city to be part of the project to bring Ryan home, something that they are extremely proud of. Marketing Manager Nick Caddy explained “It’s a great honour to be part of the team to help bring Ryan home, working on the site was such a surreal experience for everyone involved and one I know our team will never forget.”
Caddy Windows supplied and installed the front door for the home which was specially manufactured to allow wheelchair access. The door also had an automatic opening function which was linked to Ryan’s wheelchair allowing him to open and close the door with a single press of a button. Nick went on to say “We’ve done some work for the Pollard family in the past and knew how important it was for them to have Ryan home. All of the trades did such a fantastic job in just 9 days and it’s something that everyone here at Caddy Windows will remember for a long time.”

THE WORD ON THE STREET A Load of Rubbish! By Eileen Means This weekend two contrasting news items stuck in my mind. One was a photograph in the ‘Evening Post’ and local social media of an overflowing litter bin in Castle Park surrounded by disgusting crap – only word for it. This visually reflects the cuts in services that Bristol City Council is forced to impose thanks to the Conservative Government’s punitive budget cuts on local government. The other news item was from the Friends of Brislington Brook. They are a wonderful group of local residents who care about their area. They meet regularly once a month to clean up the brook, St Annes Woods and Nightingale Valley that it runs through and to check for pollution.
The Friends of Brislington Brook came 4th in the Airbus Community Awards, winning a prize of £500. In my opinion they deserved to come top. Their latest Big Clean Up was 9th April. The valley is so beautiful now, green and lush, well worth a visit. Local Brislington people, from the very young to the older residents really appreciate it. They can play and walk there safely, secure in the knowledge that any harmful substances and litter have been picked up. So why doesn’t everyone in Bristol care about their environment and at the least take their litter home rather than dropping it in our parks and on our streets? Bristol is such a beautiful place with many secret gardens and green places. Come on Bristolians, do your bit to keep our city clean.
They work closely with the Environment Agency. They keep the surroundings so nice and clean. I joined them once to attack and pull up Himalayan bindweed so that our natural species of plants can thrive there.

Take time to sharpen your axe Lumberjacks Bob and Jo were taking part in a tree felling competition. The rules of the competition were simple. The person who cut down the most trees in 8 hours won. Both guys were physically up to the task and started swinging their axes purposefully, accurately and effectively. Trees were being felled but Bob was confused that when occasionally he stopped to take a breath, he noticed Jo was sat down crouched over his axe. With the time ticking on, Bob continued like a complete hero, sinking the blade into the trunks of the trees. He was bemused that Jo needed longer breaks than him - seemingly praying to his axe. The hours passed by and when both men were ordered to stop, the judge was sent into the felled area to count how many trees each had cut down. The judge completed the count and asked the two lumberjacks to come forwards.
The judge proclaimed “The winner of the competition is …… Jo”. Bob was astonished, crestfallen, even more confused. Bob went over to Jo to congratulate him and said “But whenever I looked up from felling you were sat down looking at your axe”. Jo replied “Bob – during those moments I was not so much resting, but sharpening my axe”. All too often in business, and particularly with small owner manager businesses, there is the desire to be successful and consequently owners feel unable to take a break, relax and recharge. The truth is these owners become less and less productive, worn out, and their ability to focus on the important things diminished. As we head into the more sunny time of the year, remember to take a holiday, walk in the evening, turn off the phone, protect one day of each week to recharge and recuperate. Use this time to allow fresh thoughts and considerations take place about your job or business. In essence – take time to sharpen your axe.

Networking tips to get the best results! Networking is an art form practiced by many, mastered by few. In its simplest form, networking is about building a strong web of relationships. This article offers essential tips for successful networking.
DO: •Bring business cards wherever you go. They are the "currency of networking." •Have a 60 second speech about your business and practice it. Does it sound interesting to you? If not, it won't be interesting to anyone else! •Schedule time on your calendar for on going networking. Attend association meetings, chapter meetings, business seminars, one to one meetings and other appropriate networking venues. •Set a goal to meet at least one new person at each networking meeting you attend. Remember, it's quality, not quantity that you are looking for here. •Ask for business cards. Be sure to note the date on the front and the time, location of where you met and any other relevant information on the back. •Follow-up new contacts within one week. Schedule a coffee/ lunch or send notes, e-mails, articles or other items periodically to maintain the connection.
Like anything, practice makes perfect. Owning my own company, I get to practice a lot. My favourite networking example is from the movie, For Love of Money released in 1993. There is a classic scene where Michael J. Fox, who plays a hotel concierge, ducks into a helicopter owned by a man named Chuck. The helicopter pilot says to Fox, "How do you know Chuck?" Fox says, "I don't know Chuck. But I know Eddie Shackner. Eddie knows Jerry Levine. Jerry knows George Spitzer. George knows Chuck." The pilot replies, "Small world." Really! In its simplest form, networking is about building a strong web of relationships. Below are some essential tips for successful networking whether your goal is to build your business or simply to establish new professional relationships or friendships.
DON'T: •Sit with your buddies. You can talk to them anytime! •Arrive late. You don't want to be competing with the speaker or food service for attention! •Don’t do all the talking. When you speak, you push people away, but when you listen, you draw them in. •Be insincere. If you are not interested in someone, politely move on. •Collect a business card from every person. Collect cards only from those you plan to follow-up with. It's quality not quantity that counts! On a final note, remember that networking is not about what you get out of a relationship; it's about what you give. And, as the saying goes , the rest will follow. Contact Direct Local on 0117 325 8029 or email us at info@directlocalonline.com to find out about local networking groups.

Why Use A Virtual Assistant? 2017. What is it going to bring? Economic uncertainty? In 2018 the pension auto-enrolment scheme will be implemented. The same year there will be a change from annual to quarterly tax returns. More pressure that your business does not need. But there is a solution. Now is time for your business to outsource your administration to a virtual assistant (V.A.) rather than recruiting a new member of staff.
So why outsource? It really is this simple. You do not need to pay a pension, sick pay, holiday pay or any benefits that a company may offer employees. You do not need to worry about tax and national insurance as this is the responsibility of the V.A. A V.A. can work as little or as many hours as required. You are in control of what you want them to do for you. There are no overheads and being virtual means we do not take up your office space.
What can a virtual assistant do to help you? Firstly, a business needs to look at what is causing them to stagnate or not cope with the workloads. Are those invoices and expenses being done by your other halves in their spare time in the evening? Are you lacking a social media presence? Do you run your business with lots of spreadsheets? Is your bookkeeping behind schedule? Is your customer aftersales follow up letting you down? A V.A. can help with all of this. V.A’s can just be your P.A. or your business strategist. By leaving a V.A. to look after your office administration, your business can focus on what you do best, meaning you become more successful and efficient. Be it engineering, plumbing, architectural, therapist, florist or photographer, a V.A. can help your business.

I lost over 6 stone and repaired my relationship 33-year-old Lee Arnold from Kent gained weight once his career took a turn. After giving up his sporting hobbies, Lee was at rock bottom before joining his local Slimming World group and losing a super 6st 2lbs*! Here he explains how losing weight has changed his life and repaired his relationship. “When I met my fiancée Amy, I was a carefree and outgoing guy who had bags of energy. I enjoyed my manual job as a scaffolder. I had plenty of time to play football, ride my bike and run in the evenings. When we had George (now 4) things were fantastic. However, I was promoted to an office job and that was when it all started going downhill. “Working long hours and waking up at 4.30am took its toll and my after-work hobbies dropped off, along with my social life. My bad eating habits were increasing my weight tenfold and before I knew it, my confidence was so low, I didn’t even want to socialise with my own fiancée! My depression was at an all-time high and at 20 stone, so was my weight.
Fit for the future “Once I felt comfortable, I began to embrace exercise again. I started off small but I’m at target, I’ve completed a high-intensity 60-day challenge, I play squash once a week and I can run 10k in 35 minutes, which I’d never have dreamed of doing before. “Slimming World hasn’t just improved my physical health – it’s also contributed to my mental health. I’m back doing a manual job so I can spend more time with my family and now Amy and I are closer than ever (we’ve just had our second baby as a result of that!). George now tells his friends that he wants to be strong like Daddy when he grows up and to know that your son is proud of you, is the best feeling in the world.”
“During a visit to the doctor, he explained that I wouldn’t live much longer if I didn’t make a change. This frightening news really brought my problem home. I realised that I wasn’t being the father that I wanted to be for my son. Making the break “Amy had been to Slimming World before and suggested I attended group. I was sure it was just for women! How wrong I was. My Consultant, Suzy, sat me down and explained Food Optimising, and I couldn’t believe how adaptable it was.
“I’ve always had a huge appetite and I was used to having mountains of food. However, after joining Slimming World I realised I didn’t need to cut down my portions and I still ate plates of spag bol, steak and chips, lasagne and it was all Free! My family even got involved in the process – they’d regularly come over for dinner and my mother-in-law and her sister even joined group with me. “My Consultant was so supportive throughout my whole journey. She sent me little reminder texts which kept me on track, and due to my competitive nature, I was eager to get the certificates at each half a stone lost. I loved it so much that I convinced five friends to join group and they now feel fantastic too!

An intrepid group of amateur cyclists are taking on a huge challenge in June for two very deserving charities. Elliot Cooke, Chuck Knight, Andy Li, Daniel Brady, Alex Cooke, Louise Towler, Matt Hill and Adrian Cunnington along with a support vehicle will be cycling 400 miles from Bristol to Paris in 5 stages. Elliot Cooke of Pursuit Fitness who is leading the organization of the ride says.. “We are all very excited and perhaps a little nervous, we know this is not going to be easy as some of us have very little riding experience and some have never ridden as a group which is a completely different discipline to riding on your own. However none of us are strangers to a challenge and we are very confident in our ability to complete this trip on time and safely”
“Some of us have come in to contact with these two charities in the past either directly or indirectly, they both do an amazing job. We thought it was important to support them while challenging ourselves” It’s easy to donate by visiting: https://mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/pursuitfitness on your computer, tablet or mobile or by searching for Pursuit fitness Bristol on facebook and following the link provided. “Our target is £2000 which we are confident we will smash!” says Chuck Knight, one of the more experienced cyclists on the challenge.
The two chosen charities for the Bristol to Paris ride are “The British Heart Foundation” and “Off The Record” which is a Bristol based charity for people aged between 11-25 who suffer with mental health issues.
Help with fund raising for the challenge has come from: Lane Pearson Automotive of Bristol Tax Assist Accountants of Weston Super Mare Texatherm Systems of Weston Super Mare NYPD Homesheild plumbers of Clevedon Floor Manager of Weston Super Mare And the riders themselves, who have tirelessly held fund raising events on the lead up to the ride.
Adrian Cunnington says..
The team says thank you all for your support!

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) have confirmed that the driving test in England, Scotland and Wales will change from Monday 4 th December 2017.
The examiner will provide the sat nav and set it up. You won’t need to set the route - the examiner will do this for you. So, it doesn’t matter what make or model of sat nav you practise with. You can’t follow directions from your own sat nav during the test - you have to use the one supplied by the examiner. You’ll be able to ask the examiner for confirmation of where you’re going if you’re not sure. It won’t matter if you go the wrong way unless you make a fault while doing it. One in 5 driving tests won’t use a sat nav. you’ll need to follow traffic signs instead. 3. Reversing manoeuvres will be changed The ‘reverse around a corner’ and ‘turn-in-the-road’ manoeuvres will no longer be tested, but your instructor should still teach them you. You’ll be asked to do one of 3 possible reversing manoeuvres:
Parallel park at the side of the road
Park in a bay - either driving in and reversing out, or reversing in and driving out (the examiner will tell you which you have to do)
The changes are designed to make sure new drivers have the skills they’ll need to help them through a lifetime of safe driving.
•
Pull up on the right-hand side of the road, reverse for 2 car lengths and re-join the traffic
The changes will only apply to car driving tests to begin with.
4. Answering a vehicle safety question while you’re driving
The 4 driving test changes
The examiner will ask you 2 vehicle safety questions during your driving test - these are known as the ‘show me, tell me’ questions.
1. Independent driving part of the test will increase to 20 minutes The independent driving part of the test currently lasts around 10 minutes. During this part of the test, you have to drive without turn-by-turn directions from the driving examiner. This part of the test will be made longer, so it’ll last around 20 minutes - roughly half of the test.
You’ll be asked the:
‘tell me’ question (where you explain how you’d carry out a safety task) at the start of your test, before you start driving
‘Show me’ question (where you show how you’d carry out a safety task) while you’re driving - for example, showing how to wash the windscreen using the car controls and wipers
2. Following directions from a sat nav During the independent driving part of the test, most candidates will be asked to follow directions from a sat nav.

Finding a garage you can trust is never simple, but it can be done. For every one bad garage, there are ten other brilliant ones with honest mechanics just trying to help you get back on the move. The problem is being able to tell the difference between them!
Garages have to display their insurance and certificates in plain sight for customers to read so you’ll know a garage can be trusted when you see their certificates displayed clearly. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is! If a mechanic tells you that they can deliver a full MOT for £20 then you’re probably going to have a bad time…
Using Direct Motors guide below we can help make sure you find the right garage. .Make sure the mechanic explains everything when you take your car to a mechanic it’s important that you understand what is included in the repair. Make sure to ask plenty of questions so you know how long the repair should take and what costs will be involved. The more you understand about the work a mechanic does, the more comfortable you’ll be and if the mechanic is willing to discuss everything, you can trust them to do an honest job. Read customer reviews Garages rely on reputation and word of mouth to generate business because drivers trust other drivers when it comes to deciding which garage to go to. If you get told not to take your car to a certain garage, you’ll make sure to avoid it!
The fact is, if you choose the cheapest option when it comes to repairing your car, you are taking a risk, at the end of the day, you get what you pay for. We understand that money plays a huge part in the decision-making process, however, you should always be weary of prices that are very cheap. Ask about which parts they’re using
The same goes for good garages, if you hear good feedback, you’ll most likely trust your friend or family member and take your car for repair. If you don’t have anybody to recommend a garage to you, there are thousands of online reviews which rate garages.
You may not know this but if you need a part of your car replacing, there are several options a mechanic may take:.
Make sure to read reviews of a garage online before taking your car to a mechanic as you’ll get a feeling of the trustworthiness of a garage by listening to drivers who have had repairs before.
The price of repair may change depending on the parts used, so it’s always worth asking where the garage has sourced their parts. If a mechanic isn’t happy with telling you, you might want to go elsewhere!
Check accreditations and awards
They could get a component made by a parts manufacturer.
Garages are required to carry certain accreditations in order to operate in the UK and you should always make sure a garage carries the correct certification before agreeing to have a repair carried out.

“How to” for Lawn Mowing How often you mow your lawn will depend on a number of factors. Firstly how much time you have to devote to your lawn’s maintenance. How fast your lawn grows, and this in turn will depend on whether you fertilise it regularly and whether it receives adequate water and sunlight. Normally, lawns should be mowed at least one a fortnight to keep them in check, so to speak. One of the worst things you can do for a lawn and a big misconception is that you can or should mow your lawn very short in order to reduce the number of times you have to mow it. Grass generally will do much better when mowed at a higher setting. This is especially the case in the summer months, where short grass can often be burnt by the sun otherwise. It is suggested that you should never be cutting or trimming off more than 1/3 of the length of the grass in a mowing session. If you have let your lawn go and it is far too long, it is recommended that you firstly mow it at a longer cut and then remow it at a slightly lower setting. If it is still too long, then you can go over it again in a couple of days time. Although this is time consuming it is the preferred method for caring for your lawn. Needless to say like having your hair cut, you should maintain your equipment. In this case make sure your mower blades are sharp and in good condition. lawn after mowing in nice even and straight rows.
Remove any stone or other obstructions from the lawn before mowing to avoid any damage to the mower or lawn. Other recommendations for mowing a perfect lawn: • Do mow in different directions, it does not matter which way – whether it is diagonal, horizontal, or vertically each time you mow your lawn. This prevents the grass blades from curving in a particular direction after numerous cuts. • It is well known that you should never mow when your lawn is still wet. The reason for this, however, is not so well known. There are actually two reasons for this. Firstly, you will not be cutting your lawn evenly and when it dries may be a lot longer than expected. Secondly , you can often cause fungus to establish itself. • For the lawn bowl look of a flatten smooth lawn larger lawn rollers can be purchased. To use these you simply roll them over your lawn after mowing in nice even and straight rows.

SUMMER SOLSTICE Once again we are almost at the summer solstice. And we are seeing trees in blossom flowers beginning to bloom .Hopefully your ambitions, or ideas from the spring or beginning to become fulfilled. Sometimes things that we hoped for can take a little longer to begin to flourish. But with patience and action, things will change as they always do. Enjoy this time of late spring, and as much as you can, try to get out into the fresh air, royal garden, or anywhere that you feel peaceful and calm. And enjoy the beauty of this time when the flowers are springing up, and the trees are coming into blossom. Celebrations for this time do not have to be fancy. Even on the solstice, just a simple acknowledgement of the fact we have reached the Time of year, when the Sun is at its highest, of the longest amount of daylight and the shortest night.
With many blessings to you, Marie
