Sunscreen: Are You Using Enough? Experts say how much and how often you should apply the product and why it’s so important. It doesn’t matter how high the SPF is or how “long lasting” the label claims it will be sunscreen doesn’t stay with you all day. Ironically, what degrades and neutralizes sunscreen is sunlight. “When you’re in the sun, the sunscreen will break down, and depending on your activity, it may also get washed away with water or sweat,” says Henry W. Lim, a dermatologist and photobiologist for the Skin Cancer Foundation. The experts recommend, as a general rule, fully reapplying over your face and body every two to four hours when you’re in the sun. Sure, even a little is better than nothing, but you’re not going to get the best protection if you don’t use enough sunscreen. “Studies have shown that people use about half the amounts at which the products are tested,” says Lim. “So the label may say SPF 30, but you’re getting closer to SPF 15 or 12.” For complete coverage, the experts recommend a shot glass-size amount (one ounce) for the entire body and a pea-size amount for the face. According to the saying, a picture is worth a thousand words. But if you are brave enough to have your dermatologist take a UV photo, that’s a picture that will shock you speechless. These special images are almost like X-rays of the skin, revealing all the sun damage that’s not yet visible on the surface. Dermatologists agree that the main purpose for these is educational. “Even on a 15-year-old, it would show a lot of blotchiness, so it’s a way of educating people who can’t appreciate the damage they’re doing,” says New York dermatologist Diane Berson. “It’s also really scary-looking,” and this helps doctors show patients the importance of vigilant sun protection.

Getting Your Vehicle Ready For Summer Summer’s heat, dust, and stop-and-go traffic, will take their toll on your vehicle. Add the effects of last winter, and you could be poised for a breakdown. You can lessen the odds of mechanical failure through periodic maintenance... Your vehicle should last longer and command a higher resale price, too! Some of the following tips are easy to do; others require a skilled auto technician. • Air Conditioning A marginally operating system will fail in hot weather. Have the system examined by a qualified technician. Newer models have cabin air filters that clean the air entering the heating and air conditioning system. Check your owner’s manual for location and replacement interval • Cooling System The greatest cause of summer breakdowns is overheating. The cooling system should be completely flushed and refilled about every 24 months. The level, condition, and concentration of the coolant should be checked periodically. (A 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water is usually recommended.) DIYers, never remove the radiator cap until the engine has thoroughly cooled! The tightness and condition of drive belts, clamps, and hoses should be checked by a pro. • Oil Change your oil and oil filter as specified in your manual more often (every 3,000 miles) if you make frequent short jaunts, extended trips with lots of luggage, or tow a trailer. • Engine Performance Replace other filters (air, fuel, PCV, etc.) as recommended more often in dusty conditions. Get engine drive-ability problems (hard starts, rough idling, stalling, diminished power, etc.) corrected at a good shop. • Windshield Wipers A dirty windshield causes eye fatigue and can pose a safety hazard. Replace worn blades and get plenty of windshield washer solvent.

64

Solutions on page / Soluciones en la pagina 80

65

Getting Your Vehicle Ready For Summer • Lights Inspect all lights and bulbs; replace burned out bulbs; periodically clean dirt and insects from all lenses. To prevent scratching, never use a dry rag. • Tires Have your tires rotated about every 5,000 miles. Check tire pressures once a month; check them while they’re cold before driving for any distance. Don’t forget to check your spare as well and be sure the jack is in good condition. Examine tires for tread life, uneven wearing, and cupping; check the sidewalls for cuts and nicks. An alignment is warranted if there’s uneven tread wear or if your vehicle pulls to one side. • Brakes Brakes should be inspected as recommended in your manual, or sooner if you notice pulsations, grabbing, noises, or longer stopping distance. Minor brake problems should be corrected promptly. • Battery Batteries can fail any time of year. The only accurate way to detect a weak battery is with professional equipment. Routine care: Scrape away corrosion from posts and cable connections; clean all surfaces; re-tighten all connections. If battery caps are removable, check the fluid level monthly. Avoid contact with corrosive deposits and battery acid. Wear eye protection and rubber gloves. • Emergencies Carry some basic tools — ask a technician for suggestions. Also include a first aid kit, flares, and a flashlight.

66

67

7 CAR TIPS FOR SUMMER 1. Sitting in traffic on a hot day is not a good time for your car’s air conditioning to run out of refrigerant. 2. Corroded battery terminals prevent your car from running at its best. 3. Repairing brake problems early can prevent larger issues later on and keep you and your family safe when you’re driving 4. You should replace your car’s air filter every 19,312 kilometres. 5. If a hose breaks or a belt snaps, your car may overheat. 6. Check your car’s oil often. 7. Make sure to check your tire pressure regularly with an accurate gauge.

Summer Cocktails

1. MOSCOW MULE A drink with a kick! Ingredients • 1/2 lime • Crushed ice • 60ml Vodka • 120ml Ginger Beer How to make Squeeze lime into a glass. Fill the glass with ice and add vodka, top with ginger beer. For a bit of style, slice a piece of lime and hang over the edge of the glass. Warning: You may have to teach someone else how to mix them, because after a few you will be unable to tell your lime from your lemon.

2. SANGRIA Get ready to tango the night away! Ingredients • 4 oranges • 2 limes • 500g strawberries • Three cups of seedless grapes • 1/4 cup brandy • 750ml bottle red wine (tip: pick a sweeter red, and make sure it is not too bitter) • 1/4 cup caster sugar • Bottled soft drink (lemonade or ginger ale will work but my personal trick is using peach iced tea!) • Crushed ice How to make Slice up all of the fruit (using only two of the oranges), and place in a jug. Combine with wine, sugar, 1½ cup of soft drink (you can always add more later), the juice from the remaining oranges, and brandy. Add crushed ice, and you are good to go!

70

3. STRAWBERRY CHAMPERS You can never go wrong with this sweet indulgence! Ingredients • 1 x 200ml bottle Angostura bitters • 500g strawberries • 6 x 750ml bottles champagne, chilled How to make Slice the strawberries into quarters and drop into the bottom of a champagne flute. Fill the glass with an inch of the bitters, and top up with champagne! 4. WATERMELON MAI TAI Be whisked off to an island getaway with this tropical treat! Ingredients • 500g watermelon • 1/2 cup pineapple juice • 1/2 cup white rum • 1/4 cup triple sec liqueur • 1 teaspoon grenadine • Crushed ice How to make While this may be a little on the pricier side, it could not be more simple to make. Cut the watermelon into bite sized pieces. Place the watermelon, pineapple juice, rum, liqueur and grenadine in the jug of a blender and blend until smooth.
Pour the watermelon mixture over ice to serve.
