POWERED BY LOST CITY GUIDES

Dear guest, We warmly welcome you at the Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam. We hope the beautiful architecture, historical setting, excellent location and the True Waldorf Astoria service will combine to create an exceptional experience for every single guest. As an Amsterdam resident for nearly 45 years, I still have a strong passion for this wonderful city, its history and its heritage. You will be part of this while enjoying the property which is set on the banks of Amsterdam’s grandest canal, the Herengracht, built during the Golden Age. Boasting a historical exterior comprising six original patrician houses of the 17th and 18th century and a unique entrance and grand staircase attributed to the architect of king–stadholder William III, Daniel Marot, this hotel is the only top luxury hotel within the UNESCO World Heritage listed canal site, from which to explore the vibrant city and environment. I am happy to provide you with my personal insider knowledge of the city to ensure that you will enjoy an unforgettable experience and take home extraordinary memories. Also this exclusive guide will assist you in finding a selection of the top locations for Shopping, Art, Food, Drinks and Specialities, which connect with the True Waldorf Astoria inspirational Environment and will create exceptional experiences by their own nature. Roberto Payer General Manager Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam

Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam The Waldorf Astoria is situated at the Herengracht, in the heart of the Amsterdam Canal Ring, in six adjoined canal houses. These were renovated to become the Waldorf Astoria, which features many luxurious facilities, including the Guerlain Spa, Librije’s Zusje Amsterdam, Peacock Alley and unique banquet spaces. The Canal Ring was created in the seventeenth century when Holland experienced its Golden Age. Amsterdam was the mercantile capital of the world and many people from all over the world came to Amsterdam to establish trading firms. The Dutch canal houses mirrored the occupation of their residents, combining business and pleasure. Behind the facades, large rooms where guests could be entertained, took up the main floor.

De Wildt

The story behind six historical canal houses

The first floor was used for bedrooms. The basement was used for storage, as was the attic. This use of the houses had its influence on the facades: the windows of the main floor were high, those of the first floor were lower, while the upper floors had the lowest windows. Almost all houses had a staircase in order to enter directly on the main floor and skip the basement. Double wide houses had double staircases, narrow houses had stairs with just one flight. Behind the house large gardens were obligatory. The canals are the ultimate expression of Amsterdam as trading city. Trade thrives on freedom and tolerance. Those elements – architecture and freedom of mind – were the main reasons for UNESCO to list the Canal Ring as World Heritage.

Brentano

Herengracht 542–544

Brentano The Brentano House was originally built in the seventeenth century and was, according to engravings from that era, always less of a landmark than the neighbouring houses.

Brentano

Herengracht 542–544

Brentano

The property clearly differs from the other houses that make up the Waldorf Astoria hotel: it lacks the double staircase and its exterior looks more austere. It was bought as a family home in 1753 by Josephus Brentano, a Dutch merchant of Italian origin. He collected many fine paintings from important masters like Rembrandt, Hals and Rubens, along with Italian paintings by Titian and Raphael. Some of his paintings now adorn the Rijksmuseum. Brentano received many distinguished guests at this place, including the Russian Emperor Alexander I, who visited Holland in 1814. King William I from the Netherlands and Prince Frederick from the Netherlands also stayed at Brentano’s home. After the death of Brentano, his collection was sold, and the proceeds were used to convert his house into a home for elderly men. A library, billiard room and reading room made sure the elderly were well provided for. In 1930 both buildings were renewed and converted into a single house (numbers 544–542), commissioned by Gesticht Brentano’s Steun des Ouderdoms, architect P.J. Pieters. In 1932 the building was completed and opened as a Roman Catholic residential home: Brentano’s Steun des Ouderdoms (Huize St. Antonius). Approximately 30 upper–class men lived there in comfort, with facilities such as a library, billiard room and reading room. • #109 Brentano suite; named after Josephus Augustinus Brentano.

Herengracht 546

Sautijn

This house was built in 1672 for Mayor Willem Sautijn, merchant to Italy and the Levant, in a Classicist style. The site was built together with his wife, Theodora van Bambeck. In 1690 his wife also commissioned the construction of a stable and carriage house at 689 Keizersgracht. By 1767 the entire building was owned by the Sautijn family.

Sautijn

Herengracht 546

Sautijn

Many of the later inhabitants, including Nicolaas Sautijn, Mayor of Amsterdam, Baron Röell and Sir Hendrick Huygens, secretary of the City of Amsterdam, changed the interior to the taste of their day. Even though much of the older interior has unfortunately been lost, the house does still have the original octagonal summerhouse, built around 1750, which adorns the gardens at the back of the hotel. The ornaments on the roof, above the entrance, and the decoration of the tympanum are authentic and very valuable. This summerhouse – which was much larger in the eighteenth century and might have been used to drink tea – was most likely built as an interesting architectonic backdrop for the garden. The front is decorated with charming putti, and a lavish decoration at the top crowns this garden jewel. The double staircase at the front is decorated with Ionic and Doric columns and original decorations of angels, plants and flowers along the middle windows gave the brick exterior a more aesthetic look. • Meeting room Sautijn; named after Willem Sautijn. • Meeting room Huygen; named after Hendrick Huygens. • Meeting room Decquer; named after Clara Decquer, the wife of Nicolaas Sautijn. She gave the assignment of the roof ceiling in the early 18th century. • Board room De Hartogh; named after Eduard de Hartogh who refurnished the room.

Herengracht 548

Marot

This house – where you will find the entrance to the Waldorf Astoria hotel – was built in 1665 for Cornelis Backer, a member of the prominent Protestant Backer family. Many other important families have lived here since the beginning.

Marot

Herengracht 548

Marot

From approximately 1714 the building was owned by Theodorus de Leeuw, who became lord of Abcoude and Baambrugge in 1715. Most likely he refurbished the house with the help of legendary 18th century architect Daniël Marot, who also did the interiors at Hampton Court Palace in London and the gardens at Paleis het Loo. The vestibule on the ground floor and the staircase from the ground floor up to the roof are especially fine examples of 18th century interior decorating style. In the early 19th century the interiors on the front of the house were modernised; the ceiling in the front room dates from 1820– 40, while the other alterations were made around 1870. Around 1960–63 the building was heavily reconstructed. Luckily many of the elements of the house remained, such as the basement, the façade and the two front rooms. It is the preservation of the original 18th century vestibule and staircase that makes this building such an important part of the architectural history of Amsterdam. • Backer Suite; named after the Backer family, which was responsible for 17th century signature painted ceiling in the living room.

Herengracht 550–552

Hooft

These houses were originally built in 1665. Hendrick Hooft, a scion of a very important patrician family, built and lived in the house. His father, Henrick Hooft, was Mayor of Amsterdam and built 556 Herengracht.

Hooft

Herengracht 550–552

Hooft

As the houses were narrow, they had to be deep in order to have enough space. The two houses were completely renovated in 1960–1962, with the exception of one exquisite room in the Rococo style. This lovely dining room was made in 1767–1768 and features fine Italianate paintings, done by the painter Jacobus Maurer, whose family originally came from Switzerland. His delightful landscape scenes in their original frames can still be admired today. Italian marble called portoro was used for the fireplace, which added to the Mediterranean atmosphere. All of the architectural details in this room, the gilded mirrors and stucco ceiling are in excellent condition. The grisailles, painted by Abraham van Beesten, are also noteworthy. Many grisailles, fake pieces of sculpted decorations, were adorning houses along the Amsterdam canals, but most did not survive the frequent renovations that changed the houses over time. It is rare to be able to see such a fine room in its entirety. • Meeting room Maurer; named after Jacobus Maurer. • Ballroom Hooft; named after Gerrit Hooft who lived in the house and gave it a major overhaul in 1782. He also commissioned the painted room in the building (Maurer room), which is the most valuable aspect of the house.

Herengracht 554

Kemp

In 1665 Joost Kemp, Lord of Kerkwijk, had this house built from sandstone, a luxury building material at the time, which had to be imported from Germany. He had a special room installed with seats in the shape of eagles.

Kemp

Herengracht 554

Kemp

After the Kemp family sold it, many other prominent members of the Amsterdam society – including Nicolaas Geelvinck and Mayors Huygens and Strijen – lived here. The facade – though parts date from a later era – still features the original seventeenth–century flower and fruit decorations. Quirijn van Strijen adapted the facade by adding two reclining figures at the top: the woman on the right holds a horn of plenty. To enter the house the double staircase informed the official visitors of olden times that “here lives a man of wealth”, such stairs were very expensive at the time. Servants and people delivering goods had to take the entrance under the staircase to get to the kitchen and servants’ quarters. One can still see that the windows on the first floor (where business was conducted and honoured guests were received) are the tallest. The windows gradually get smaller towards the roof. The servants generally had their living quarters directly under the roof. The attic was also the place where laundry used to be dried. The beautiful facade is a good example of why the Amsterdam Canal district in its entirety is a World Heritage Site. •Meeting room Kemp; named after Joost Kemp Lord of Kerkwijk.

Herengracht 556

De Wildt 556 Herengracht, built for prominent Mayor of Amsterdam Hendrick Hooft in 1665, can boast a long line of distinguished owners. Many members of the van Hooft family lived in the house as well as Jacob van Loon, governor of the East India Company and many other influential citizens.

De Wildt

Herengracht 556

De Wildt

The house was decorated around 1780 by one of the top families in the city, the De Wildts, who were related to the Geelvinck family. Susanna de Wildt installed a beautiful interior in the right front and back room, similar to the interiors of the whole Geelvinck family. The facade is made of brick, which is the main building material in Holland. Natural stone, timber and precious marbles had to be imported from Germany, Scandinavia and Italy. Over the centuries many owners embellished their homes according to the fashion of the time. Rococo decorations can be seen for example in the entrance, and neoclassical elements decorate the front room. Opulent fireplaces, some made from rare Bardiglio marble, with finely chiselled fruit and flower pieces still adorn some of the rooms. In the hall you can also see that many of the marble tiles have similar patterns so all of them were carefully cut and selected to make a grand statement; all of the marble naturally imported from abroad, so it would have been very costly at the time. Throughout this house you can see many small and fine decorative elements all dating from days gone by. • Van Loon Suite; named after Jacob van Loon. The main interior parts in this suite date from the period of Jacob van Loon. In 1780 the suite was decorated in a most appealing neoclassical style under the guidance of Susanna de Wildt.

LOST wants to take you beyond the sad tourist drinking holes on the Leidseplein to the vibrant venues that make Amsterdam the great party city that it is. From casual Friday night drinks to the best cocktail you’ll ever have, get ready to hit the town!

Drinks

Top–5 Drinks En Pluche, Brasserie Keyzer, Café Luxembourg, MOMO, Hiding in Plain Sight

1

En Pluche

Formerly one of the most notorious coffee shops in the city, En Pluche is now – thanks to a majour

Ruysdaelstraat 54

overhaul – a seriously stylish bar. The interior of En

+31 (0)20 471 46 95

Pluche is reminiscent of a jazzy New York hotelbar,

enpluche.nl

with the laidback atmosphere to match. Our tip:

open: mon – tue &

ask the bartender to create a drink especially for

thu – sat

you, you’ll be guaranteed to get something special.

Drinks

“Laidback atmosphere”

2

Brasserie Keyzer

Brasserie Keyzer has one of the most exquisite locations in Amsterdam, right across from the Museum Square and next door to the Concertgebouw. But it’s not just about

Van Baerlestraat 96

the view; the interior is a clever mix of past and present,

+31 (0)20 675 18 66

done in a highly elegant fashion. The wine selection has

brasseriekeyzer.nl

been carefully chosen and the knowledgeable staff is

open: daily

more than happy to assist you with your choice.

Drinks

“Unique location for a drink”

3

Café Luxembourg

Café Luxembourg has been a fixture of Amsterdam for almost 25 years now; you can hardly find an Amsterdam resident who hasn’t been to the cosy grand café. The

Spui 24

interior has a modern French style decor. When the

+31 (0)20 620 62 64

sun is out however, the terrace of the Luxembourg

luxembourg.nl

is where you want to be. It makes for great people

open: daily

watching, best enjoyed with a plate of “bitterballen”.
