NEWS Off-Road Icon John Marking Passes Away The off-road world has lost another industry great. John Marking passed away at his home near San Diego, California. Marking started his career at in 1988 Jimco Racing Products while enrolling in the engineering program at San Diego State University. He began rebuilding and modifying shock absorbers which landed him at Fox racing shox. Over the next 28 years Marking became the go-to guy for suspension. Travis Pastrana Leaves Red Bull for Black Rifle Coffee Company

Black Rifle Coffee Company has announced it is signing action sports icon Travis Pastrana. The new contract puts Pastrana’s longtime association with Red Bull to rest. Pastrana posted a video to his Instagram page showing him hanging up his Red Bull hat and helmet and picking up a new Black Rifle helmet. He is also shown wearing Black Rifle graphics on his motocross jersey. “Travis brings excitement everywhere he goes. Great American Shortcourse Finalizes 2022 Race Schedule

The 2022 schedule is out for the Great American Shortcourse Series. Racing kicks off March 19th and 20th at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park in Chandler, Arizona. Ten rounds of racing are planned for 2022.

An invitational exhibition race will be held during the King of the Hammers in Johnson Valley on February 1st. Points for the Pro-2 and Pro-Light classes will be based on eight rounds to allow for those teams to run in the Midwest during the summer. Rounds 3& 4 of the series will be held May 14th and 15th at Glen Helen Raceway. GAS will wrap up November 12th and 13th at San Bernardino County Fairgrounds in Victorville.

Kenny Roberts Celebrates 70th Birthday with a Custom-Built Yamaha RMAX 1000 Side-by-Side Kenny Roberts Celebrates 70th Birthday with a Custom-Built Yamaha RMAX 1000 Side-by-Side. “King” Kenny Roberts celebrated his 70th birthday with a special one-off Yamaha RMAX 1000 LE Side-by-Side. The vehicle was specially built for Roberts by Yamaha. Roberts is a former professional motorcycle racer who was won numerous events including two AMA Grand National Championships. The vehicle was styled after Kenny’s 1978 OW Yamaha 500 world championship motorcycle.

“Kenny is a true legend and icon in our sport,” said Yamaha Motorsports President Mike Martinez. “The team at our factory here in Georgia was indeed honored to build this special RMAX 1000 as a gift from his family and friends for his 70th birthday. Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself, your family, and any obstacles that make you, you: A: My name is Ali (pronounced Ally) and I am 9 years old. I live in Surprise, AZ and have been racing for 4 years. For the last several years I have been racing short-course with Lucas Oil and to change things up we raced at Tex-Plex last summer. Q: What is it about Off-Road that brings you the most joy? A: I really enjoy traveling with my family and spending quality time with them. I love going to new tracks, hanging out with my friends and racing my car. The best thing about racing is the life long friends I have made and get to see on and off the track. Q: What are your favorite tracks and Ultimate goal for 2022? A: Well, I had a huge crash in Sparks, NV a couple of years ago, but I really loved the track and I’m sad that it’s no longer a race track. One of my favorites and I wish we still raced there, is the Laughlin track where they used to race the UTV World Championships. Of course, I also like the track at Wild Horse Pass because it’s my home track. Q: What are you going to change tomorrow to make yourself better than today? A: Wow these are some tough questions. I try every day to be better than yesterday by always looking forward in my life. It doesn’t always work but it helps us to grow as a person. My parents always tell me to live my best life and I like to think I am. How does your school work help you in sports? A: The rule In our house is: if my grades aren’t A’s and B’s, I don’t race, but I guess that’s the opposite of what you asked. Q:Wheredoyouseeyourselfinfiveyears? A: Still living with my parents!!! Seriously - I hope to be racing an RS1 and having everyone know who I am in the world of off-road - like Corry Weller. I hope that I can continue to improve my skills and show all the boys that girls can do this too!!! hen you ask people to describe Rob MacCachren, a common answer you will hear is “the G.O.A.T. (Greatest Of All Time). Spend some time with Rob and you will quickly find out he is the humblest off-road racer you will ever meet. He had things figured out early. Something very few in this industry are able to do. Make a career out of off-road racing. Every year we at DirtSportsWorld name a driver of the year. To meet the qualifications, one must have won a championship during the year. We then look at other wins, accomplishments and achievements as well as character. Rob Mac stood out in 2021. Sure, he won the SCORE Baja 1000 with Luke McMillin and locked up the season Trophy-Truck Championship. But there’s more… Rob started racing dirt bikes near Las Vegas in the early 70’s. His dad raced buggies, and Rob was hooked in off-road. At eight years old, he won the 1973 Nevada State Motorcycle Championship. Rob’s dad purchased a buggy repair and supply shop in Las Vegas. Rob would work there in the afternoon’s when school let out. It was there he learned everything he could about building race cars. At sixteen years old, Rob and his dad purchased a 1-2 1600 car. They began racing

and winning with the car. It wasn’t long before Rob was introduced some big names in the industry such as John Marking, Gus Vildolsola and finally Mark Post. Rob was given his shot at racing in the Trophy Truck class with the big boys. Rob also raced with Venable Racing in the final season of the

Mickey Thompson Series in 1994. Rob found himself racing at Crandon winning the Governor’s Cup. Rob’s career had expanded from desert racing to short-course winning numerous races in CORR, Lucas Oil and the TORC Series. Rob has over 200 short-course wins on his resume.

Rob spent 2021 only focusing on desert racing in Baja. Rob finished sixth at the first SCORE race in San Felipe. He improved his position, still finishing shy of the podium in fifth at the Baja 500. By the time the Baja 400 rolled around several months later, Rob finished in third place putting him second in points. With Luke McMillin out of the points hunt after a Baja 500 disqualification, Rob and Luke decided to roll the dice go for the win with Rob as the driver of record. The plan worked for the duo. They pulled off a miraculous Baja 1000 win earning Rob the season championship. Rob says he remembers racing against Mark and Scott McMillin in the late 80’s and has grown to respect the McMillin family. Andy McMillin raced with Rob for a few years which brought him closer to the family. In 2021, Luke reached out to Rob asking if he would team up for the Baja 1000. Of course, Rob said yes! “Luke is like a young me, he is very energetic, he’s pushing hard and constantly thinking about how to go faster and do better,” says Rob. The Baja 1000 win is Rob’s fifth, but winning it with Luke made it more special. Luke had a prior win on his resume. A couple weeks later, the duo 22 | DIRTSPORTSWORLD.COM

were racing each other hard in the Mint 400. Both in twowheel drive trucks and just about equally matched. Luke had been leading all day and in the final miles of the race,

both drivers were in thick dust. Luke checked up slightly and Rob accidentally got into the back of Luke causing the truck to roll several times. Rob immediately stopped his race

to get out and help Luke. Winning the Mint 400 no longer mattered to either driver. Rob had a shot to get to the podium, but he refused to take it. Luke spent several minutes trying to convince Rob to go win the race. Reluctantly, Rob drove towards the podium. He didn’t want to accept his trophy or celebrate. Rob took full fault of what happened. He was only concerned about Luke, co-driver Jason Duncan and the truck. Not even an incident in the desert could break the friendship Rob has formed with the McMillins. Rob’s outstanding 2021 achievements and stand-up character has earned him the title of 2021 DirtSportsWorld driver of the year. DIRTSPORTSWORLD.COM | 23

Electric Racing Around the World

The long-awaited Extreme E Series held races around the world bringing attention to damaged climates. The vehicles would be the firstelectricoff-roadracecarst compete. Breaking the Streak The Concrete Motorsports Team was on a roll winning every race, until Best in the Desert’s Vegas to Reno. Ryan Arciero won the event with a newly built truck that was completed just a week earlier. Arciero’s truck burned to the ground during the 2020 Vegas to Reno race.

Crandon’s Hometown Hero Keegan Kincaid pulled off a Cup win in front his of his hometown crowd at Crandon. He also beat odds stacked against him, securing the Championship Off-Road season title by a single point over Jerett Brooks.

he 2021 Mint 400 was one for the record books. Events kicked off with Las Vegas Sheriff Joe Lombardo as the grand marshal. Lombardo is running for governor of Nevada. An avid off-road racer, his Spec truck, along with the race vehicles of Zack and Morgan Langley led a parade of vehicles down the iconic Las Vegas strip towards the downtown Fremont Street area. All were honoring the late John Langley who passed away over the summer in Baja. The Mint 400 started in 1968 as a way for the Mint Hotel to promote their annual deer hunt as well as bring people to Las Vegas. It wasn’t long before the Mint grew into a legitimate race that attracted the biggest names in off-road. It also became a magnet for celebrities thanks to Mint Hotel public relations director KJ Howe’s extensive Rolodex of high-level Hollywood contacts. The Mint 400 format included two days of racing. Limited vehicles were split up to have their own race day. They wouldn’t have to worry about 800 horsepower

Unlimited trucks breathing down their neck and potentially pushing them off course. A collective silent sigh of relief for the limited drivers to play it safe in Nevada’s thick dust. The day wasn’t without struggles as some did all they could to stay on course and beat their competitors. Dustin Jones was locked in an intense battle with Vito Ranuio. Glen Helen Raceway once again provided the perfect place for moto and bike lovers across California to converge and let loose for some fun in the dirt to celebrate a crazy year winding down to an end. There are multiple races throughout the weekend, live music, and plenty of fun to go around. This year was a little different than usual, but with the help of the founders, Kenny and Amber Alexander, they gave us the thumbs up to provide the kids the love and attention they deserved for a weekend of fun. Moto 4 Kids Racing supplied the action for the kids. Bringing a range of Mini Bike classes, paired with the purpose-built GP Track was exactly what the goal was to let the future stars shine bright. Since the recent pairing of the creative minds at Fasthouse x Hot Wheels and their youth crew, there has been a lot of buzz about this one of a kind collaboration coming together to support the youth. he third event of the Red Bull scramble series was held in the iconic Imperial sand dunes simply known to enthusiasts as “Glamis.” Glamis features giant dunes with large bowls of sand carved out by the winds. It is a popular hotspot for side-by-side riders. The Red Bull Sand Scramble featured an epic day of intense close wheel-to-wheel racing. Thisisthefirsttimeasanctionedside-byside race has been held in the dunes. There were two classes that included SXS Pro for the more experienced and

professional drivers and an SXS Sportsman class for amateur racers. Racers had to complete four heat races each 2.8 miles long. The top six automatically made it into the main event.Alastchancequalifierwasheld with eight more racers transferring to the main. Thirty-two vehicles made it intothesix-lapfinalevent.

Mitch Guthrie Junior posted the fastest time to take the win. Guthrie was awarded a new Polaris RZR XP Turbo for his efforts. James Hill and Corbin Leaverton rounded out the pro podium. Jaxon Steele claimed a win in the Sportsman class. His prizes consisted of a new set of BF Goodrich Tires and $500. “That was the fastest I have ever driven in the Glamis Dunes,” said Guthrie Jr. “It feels amazing to win

Several riders have also spent the off-season testing new bikes. Factory manufacturers spend a great deal of money, time and resources sending engineers to the test tracks to talk to riders and analyze feedback to make the bikes better and more competitive. So, where did everyone end up this year?

Let’s start with Honda. Team manager Erik Kehoe. He announced retirement a week after Jett Lawrence wrapped up the AMA Pro Motocross 250MX Championship. Less than a month later, Lars Lindstrom was promoted to team manager. Lindstrom has been involved with Honda since the early 2000’s, so he is familiar with company operations. Lindstrom’s most recent job was 450 crew chief. On the rider side, Aussie

brothers Jett and Hunter Lawrence were back in the 250 class. Jett suffered a rib injury during training in Florida just before Supercross is set to kick off, so to give him time to heal, his brother Hunter will race on the west coast with Jett returning to race east later in the season. Veteran Ken Roczen also returns to the team along with Chase Sexton, who joined Honda mid-2020. Shane Drew has also been brought in to

Eli Tomac left his longtime spot with Team Green at Kawasaki for the BluCru. Tomac is racing this season for Monster Energy Star Yamaha Racing aboard the YZ450F with teammate and AMA Pro Motocross Champion Dylan Ferrandis. Christian Craig is also a rider in the 450 class. The team is only one year old and already has several wins and a championship as bragging rights.

This is a great option for recreation and chasing in the most remote locations. BFG On Trail is on of the newest by its for offroad adventures. It features live tracking, ability for adding points of interest, downloading existing trails and sharing data and much more. So what is the goal for a GPS? These devices use satellite-based navigation system made up of at least 24 satellites. With that in mind, it needs to be able to receive signal from enough satellites to find your location and help you continue your adventure. If you are more on the recreational side that likes to make your own trail it is recommended that you choose a program with good signal, whether it’s an external antenna source such as Dual or others out on the market. Having the assistance to see around the areas and seeing terrain are a great way to enhance adventures. ello 2022! After a quick little pitstop from events this past couple of weeks, things are gearing up with two races planned for the 1st weekend of January. As lead chaplain for BITD, GAS, LEGACY, SCORE, The Mint 400 & select Ultra4 races, there are events planned for nearly every weekend going into the first quarter of 2022. Last year was a busy post-COVID year, especially the latter half with events nearly every weekend. Dirt Sport Ministry was able to facilitate ministry to the off-road community nationwide at promotional events, car shows, speaking engagements as well as professional races. Two thousand twenty-one was the first year that Dirt Sport Ministry had another chaplain, other than me, able to commit to being the fulltime lead chaplain for a series. In short, I have been able to duplicate myself by having RFC Chaplain Mark Budke take the reins of the Champ Off-Road series. This gave the midwest short course series consistency of a dedicated series chaplain for the first time ever. I also had the humbling opportunity to author a monthly article for the back-page of Dirt-Sport World. Dirt-Sport World is a monthly magazine that focuses on the action sport world of motorsports. If only my hi sckool English teacher could sea me know! During 2021, I needed to rethink the financial aspect of DSM because the year brought new fiscal challenges. For the last 15-years, I have been able to finance desert events with shortcourse donations/tithes. However, with changes due COVID and series cancellations, that surplus of revenue ended. Therefore, I adjusted my spending and curved back attending outlying events. Even though there was a deduction of revenue, God provided, and the year ended in the black. In addition, DSM was able to provide a chaplain at nearly all major desert races and all the short-course truck events held on the West Coast and in the Midwest. Go God! 2021 BY THE NUMBERS As you can see by the following statistics, I cut my expenses by reducing the number of hotel rooms the ministry covers. I am able to do that because of the generosity found in the community. I am so

grateful for the handful of teams/people that make sure I have a bed to sleep on. When a room has not been provided, I spent many nights either in the cab of my truck or a tent when camping was an option. Going forward, I am looking for a cabhigh aluminum canopy to put on my truck to give me a place to stretch out for the night. Having everyone located in one area makes it easier to build relationships, build trust and share the gospel. With the addition of a canopy on the truck, I could see making it to more outlying events as well as to off-road outings where I’m invited to speak. There is something very satisfying about sharing Christ around a campfire. It really takes me back to how Christ and the disciples did things. IN CLOSING.... I do know that I will continue focusing on ministry to the off-road community in whatever form it takes. I thank you for your continued support towards this ministry and my family. My prayer for your family and mine this coming year is to continue to show faithfulness in blessed times as well as in trying times.
