WORD DO YOU REALLY NEED TV?
I
s it really worth it for off-road series to spend huge amounts of money on TV production and airtime? Many sponsors still go crazy for television packages. In the social media and internet streaming age, television is not really that important anymore. At least a traditional TV package. We all know ratings have dropped and there are plenty of cable cord cutters out there that have turned to streaming services. Motocross still has a high demand and many people still watch it on TV. The Outdoor Motocross series played their final event across a couple of networks. You could catch Moto 1
action live on MAVTV which appears on many cable networks. Moto 2 however was streamed LIVE only on the Peacock network, NBC’s new subscription based streaming service. Viewers who did not subscribe to Peacock had to wait until the next day to catch the tape delayed TV broadcast. Championship Off Road streams their events all day online for free. They are played at a later date on CBS Sports. Best in the Desert streamed qualifying live for Vegas to Reno. SCORE also streams start and finish line action with some shots beamed in from remote locations. Their full race shows air later on cable TV. More and more, we are going to races going by way of streaming services and possibly cheaper productions as cable and big TV networks become less important. NEWS Ford Sending Three Broncos to Compete in Rebelle Rally Ford Motor Company is sending three Ford Broncos to compete in the 2021 Rebelle Rally. The Rebelle Rally is an all-women’s navigational rally taking place in the deserts of Nevada and California. Shelby Hall and Penny Dale will compete in the Rebelle Rally 4x4 class in a two-door Bronco SUV. Melissa Fischer and Cora Jokinen will drive the Bronco sport in the crossover class and Ford’s Kathryn Reinhardt and Victoria Bundrant will compete in the 4-door Bronco 4x4. “We’d love nothing more than to podium a Bronco and a Bronco Sport at the same time,” said Jovina Young, Bronco Sport marketing manager. “What I really like about sending the full family of Broncos is that Rebelle is about taking on different types of terrains and exploring; competitors aren’t just hitting high
speeds in the desert. It’s a chance to show Bronco doing a different type of off-roading.” The Rebelle Rally starts October 8th near the Hoover Dam and ends in the Imperial Sand Dunes. All of the Broncos will be outfitted with livery inspired by the 4600-production race Bronco.
Extreme E Hosts Rookie Invitational The Extreme E Series is hosting a rookie invitational to find the next generation of drivers. The rookie invitational will take place October 25th, following the fourth round of the season in Sardina, Italy. Each of the nine teams will test both a male and female driver. The rookie drivers will be allotted test time before competing in a timed lap. “I’m delighted to announce the Rookie Invitational at the penultimate X Prix of Season 1. It aims to offer drivers interested in competing in Extreme E the opportunity to not only get behind the wheel but immerse themselves in our unique series,” said Extreme E Founder Alejandro Agag. 6 | DIRTSPORTSWORLD.COM
Extreme E recognizes there is a gap in talent, particularly on the female side. The Rookie drivers will also attend a series of workshops focused on motorsports careers.

an Am is the first side-by-side manufacturer to offer a 200hp engine for its 2022 Maverick X3 Line-up. The new engine is coupled with the pDrive roller clutch system. The result is a quicker acceleration and instant on power at all times. Engineers took a lot of feedback from their sponsored racers who demand power and performance at all times.
Engineers have also redesigned the Can Am Maverick X3 chassis. The frame is stronger, and it now has higher ground clearance and stance. The tubing is thicker making the vehicle safer. The vehicle has a new Smart14 | DIRTSPORTSWORLD.COM
Shox adaptive suspension. It also comes with either 30 or 32-inch Maxxis Carnivore tires. With a better power-to-weight ratio, performance and handling have increased on the side-by-side. Additionally, the doors have been redesigned to keep the dust out. The Maverick has added storage space for all of the little things you like to bring on a trail ride. There is also a flip up audio roof accessory to help get the party started! The roof simply unlatches, flips up with to expose a powerful speaker system complete with built in sub woofers. At night, LED’s light up the system.

The Maverick isn’t the only vehicle to get a new engine. Two new Rotax engines- the HD7/700 ACE and HD9 will replace the older HD 5, 8, and 800. Those engines are available on the Defender, Commander and Maverick Trail models. The HD7 is designed for the lower horsepower class. It has 37% more power over the older HD5 and is optimized for off-road usage. The engine has less noise and vibration. The new HD9 delivers 30% more horsepower.
Can-Am is also expanding features for its ATV’s. The Visco-4Lok system works with a push of a button allowing riders to engage 4-wheel drive lock mode. The system provides equal power to all four wheels for
better traction. The Visco-4lok system will available on all 2022 Outlander and Renegade X mr packages as well as the Outlander XT-P and Outlander MAX limited.

T
he 2021 Best in the Desert season has been going exceptionally well for the team of Harley Letner and Kevin Thompson at Concrete Motorsports. The duo has been undefeated at virtually every race this season, that is until now. The team was confident going into time trials, carefully checking off every box. While Bryce Menzies was posting the fastest qualifying time, Letner looked faster off the line. Precision and speed, Letner chose his lines carefully. Then, the unthinkable happened. Letner rolled the truck in the second turn, failing to post a qualifying time. That earned the team a rear start in the race. If Letner and Thompson were going to take the Vegas to Reno victory, they would have their work cut out for them. As the race started, Bryce Menzies was out front. He stayed in that position for the better part of the day. Menzies won the Vegas to Reno race in 2019 and 2020. A three-peat would look really nice on his resume. The scorching Nevada temperatures continued to climb as the sun climbed even higher in the sky. At least there was small amount of relief when the course wound through some of the higher elevations. The drawback there were tight twisty turns. Tim Herbst and Pat Dean were just seconds behind Menzies. As Menzies clicked off miles, he began to put time on second place. Soon Menzies discovered he had a major problem

with his front differential at Pit 11, known as Top Gun (named because the the Navy’s flight school is nearby. The same school popularized by the famous movie starring Tom Cruise.) Menzies would have to call it quits with just

76 miles to go in the race. Last year’s heartbreak has become this year’s victory. Ryan Arciero’s truck burned to the ground in a devastating fire. The damage was so extensive that a new truck would have to be built. Arciero was sidelined for the better part of the year. The team at Herbst Smith fabrication worked on a new truck for Arciero. With less than a week to go before the green flag dropped on the race, Arciero barely got any test time on the new truck. He started 8th. With Menzies out of the race, it was Arciero
who found himself out front, taking the overall victory by 14 minutes over Steve Olliges. It could be said Arciero was a phoenix rising from the ashes. BJ Baldwin finished third, 44 seconds behind Olliges. For Harley Letner and Kevin Thompson, their winning streak had come to an end. The duo finished 7th in their class.

Dustin Grabowski secured another win this year in the 6100 class. He won by a whole 14 minutes over Brent Fox. Grabowski has three Best in the Desert wins this year putting him in the lead over Ray Griffith in the point standings. Other class wins at the event went to Nick 24 | DIRTSPORTSWORLD.COM
Carolan in 6200, Matt Rusich in Class 10 and Austin Weiland in leading UTV class. James and Jordan Dean beat “single seat” king Sam Berri in the 1500 class. In all, 406 teams competed in the Vegas to Reno race. Recent rains made the course tougher than usual.

We put this workhorse to the test at Great American Shortcourse Story: Shaun Ochsner Photos: Shaun Ochsner & La-Chelle Halliday
O
ne of the advantages of reviewing a work-horse side-by-side is we get to do real work with it. Polaris recently gave us the keys to one of their General XP 1000 Limited Edition side-by-sides. The vehicle came with all of the bells and whistles. Half doors, a front and rear windshield and of course a cargo bed to haul our stuff around. There is even a factory-installed light bar for night visibility. There are times at races where we have interviews or other feature shoots set-up and need to carry multiple back-packs, pelican

cases and even boxes of magazines. The 600lb cargo bed came in handy for securing and transporting our stuff. In many cases, shortcourse off-road racing is about everyone helping each other out. We loaded up some Maxxis tires for the Mason Motorsports team. The tires fit perfectly in the bed with room to load up a jack or other tools necessary to keep a truck in the race. There is also a built-in trailer hitch for towing. The Polaris General can tow up to 1500 lbs. We give it our recommendation as a hot pit vehicle.

The Polaris General XP 1000 small size also made it easy for maneuvering around the pits. While we didn’t need 4x4 at the Great American Shortcourse races, accessing photo spots on the track were much easier using the General. The ProStar engine gave us 100 horsepower which was a lot more than we needed. The vehicle also had plenty of ground clearance as we cruised around the track before racing started. Short course off-road tracks are known for their jumps and high banked sweeping turns. The General comes with 13.5 inches of ground clearance as well as high-clearance a-arms. The Walker Evans velocity shocks keep the ride smooth over any terrain. Short course tracks are also known to be muddy in spots to keep the dust down. Our ride had 30-inch Pro Armor Crawler XG Tires that hooked up just fine with no wheel spin when we put power down to them. The Polaris General has a 4500-lb winch
28 | DIRTSPORTSWORLD.COM
mounted to the front. We were excited to actually get some use out of it. As we were cruising through the one of the washes at Glen Helen Raceway, we came upon a stuck golf kart. We sprang into action, extending the synthetic rope on the winch and attaching it to the golf kart. With the flip of a button on the control panel and we had the stuck golf kart out of the sand in no time. Polaris General saves the day.
The cab was also spacious and comfortable. The seats are ergonomic and optimized for the rider. One of our favorite features of all new Polaris vehicles is they come with A Rockford Fosgate Audio System. Playing our favorite tunes in the General was as simple as connecting the phone via Bluetooth and controlling the audio on the ride command screen, which by the way shows us everything from vehicle diagnostics to trail maps.
POLARIS GENERAL XP 1000 LIMITED EDITION
All in all, the Polaris General XP 1000 is that perfect dual-purpose vehicle to have in your stable to get work done on your property during the week. On the weekend you can load it with all of your essentials for hunting or fishing and head out for a day in the woods.

RACE CLASS CONFUSION
Class
is in session
STORY BY: La-Chelle Halliday PHOTOS: Shaun Ochsner
H
ave you ever attempted to race across different racing series to find oneself confused when deciding upon a racing class that encompasses your vehicle? Or what similar class is offered within another racing sanction? Within the offroad world housed in the heart of many deserts, numerous entities encompass the livelihood we embellish within yet have not begun to establish a universal description of racing classes across each series to simplify necessary requirements. Stemming from my own confusion assuming numerous others may share similar feelings, I dug deep into the rulebooks, worn out every highlighter and used up each sticky note to provide a comprehensive listing of each class across every racing sanction. Beginning our journey into class distinctions, trucks tend to stand as the most iconic vehicle to the outside world. From Trophy Trucks, Trick Trucks, Unlimited Trucks, Sportsman, 1450’s and everything in between:
30 | DIRTSPORTSWORLD.COM
OFF ROAD RACING CLASSES EXPLAINED
Unlimited Truck
An open production class where all components are unlimited, and considered legal, unless specifically restricted. It has been noted across major racing sanctions that the vehicles in this class are open to all components unless stated otherwise. The vehicle body must resemble a production truck or SUV body style but is open to being constructed of any material that can be shaped to fit the style. Differences between sanctions begin to shine through the cracks when we dive deeper into the rulebooks. Across the major racing sanctions, an unlimited truck is named differently for most of them. Aside from legalities of SCORE owning the “Trophy Truck” nomenclature, everyone in the desert from teams to truck builders, understands what encases the almighty and all-powerful TT class when referenced as Trophy Truck. To put the confusion into perspective, if one were to casually walk into Geiser Bros, would you order a “Trick Truck”, “Unlimited Truck” or a “Trophy Truck”? All these titles are referencing the exact same breed of desert beast that can conquer anything from rocks, sand, silt, and dry lake beds better than any other class. The separating differences are listed below each entity.
SCORE: Known as – Trophy Truck Class – Open Production- Unlimited Numbers – 1 – 99 •Only sanction to recognize minimum wet weight of 3500lbs •Only sanction to require stock appearing grill and headlight opening must be retained BITD: Known As – Trick Trucks Class – 1400 Numbers – BITD will assign number •Has maximum of 3 seats may be used but need BITD approval •Requires vehicles must have fenders, no open wheels permitted. LEGACY: Class – Unlimited Trucks Numbers – 1-99 •Follows closely to BITD rulings but included maximum tire size of 40” tall. Trophy Truck Spec After the Trophy Truck / Unlimited Truck class grew exponentially, a class was designed as a more affordable and prerequisite to the larger Trophy Truck world of racing. This class is an open production class similar in appearance and size to SCORE Trophy Trucks class and limited to specified Sealed Motors with maximum horsepower up to 525hp and 8 cylinders. Numerous Spec trucks on average use the GM LS3 engine, a popular choice of teams, but are open to a handful of other sealed spec crate engines from Ford and GM Manufacturers. Motors must be tagged prior to the start of the race and previously purchased through Turnkey Engine Supply. Engine is limited to 8 cylinders Approved Engines • Ford 5.0L V8 (PN: M-6007-M50C) • Ford 3.5 twin turbo Ecoboost • Ford 351 V8 (PN: M-6007-S37W) • Ford Boss (535 HP) (PN: M6007- Z2427FFT) • GM LS3 (430 HP) (PN: 19370416) • GM LS3 (525 HP) (PN: 19370413) • GM LT1 (PN: 19416592) 32 | DIRTSPORTSWORLD.COM

OFF ROAD RACING CLASSES EXPLAINED
Class 1 Class 1 vehicles are open-wheel unlimited buggies. They can have a single seat or two-seats. Production bodies are not allowed in the class. Engines are normally aspirated. All of the components on a class 1 are open unless restricted by the series. The vehicles are typically two-wheel drive. Most class 1 cars have a 125-inch wheel base and typically run 37-inch tires. A class 1 is described as the sister vehicle to the Trophy Truck and usually run about the same horsepower and speed.
SCORE: Known as – Class 1 Class – Open Wheel – Unlimited Numbers – 100-199 •Must be transaxle designed transmission •Independent rear suspension BITD: Known As – Open Wheel Vehicles Unlimited Class – 1500 Numbers – BITD will assign vehicle numbers LEGACY: Class – Class 1 Numbers – 1501-1599 •Maximum wheel size of 40” tall •Maximum 3 seats allowed •Open wheel class, no fenders permitted SNORE: Class – Class 1 Numbers – not listed MORE: Class – Class 1 Numbers – 1-199
DIRTSPORTSWORLD.COM | 33
In summary, the major 3 racing classes are still very similar in appearances and a handful of engine distinctions across each major racing platform. However, a few alterations or simply wording can mislead the originating intentions behind the set of class descriptions. The numbering of classes is not yet uniform across each of the 34 | DIRTSPORTSWORLD.COM
platforms which can cause confusion when inexperienced racers are looking to expand their reach across more courses. Where a Class 1 car is numbered in one event may not be the same numbering or set up in another leading to more frustration and necessary preparation time needed before another race.

Off Road Nights Hosts Dirt Lifestyle Festival Story: Dave Arnold Photos: Dave Arnold & Gale Webb
W
ith the country opening up little by little and life sort of returning to normal, expos have been hit hard. Strict gathering mandates have made it tough for promoters to have events. California has been one of the toughest places to hold events with constant up and down color codes of restrictions. The Off-Road Nights Dirt Lifestyle Festival has been caught in this web. Off road Nights is brain child of Gary (Rat) Sult, former X-Games medalist and off-road racer. He started his first event Temecula at the Promenade Shopping center several years ago, eventually out growing the parking lot. Sult took the event to the next level at the Del Mar fairgrounds in 2019. With a pandemic striking the United States and the world everything including the 2020 event was put on hold. With multiple discussions with the State Fairgrounds and time running out to secure a venue, Sult decided to roll the dice and contact Westfield north county mall in Escondido, California. After a few back in forth discussions, it was a go! The Off-Road Nights Dirt lifestyle event was back on!
36 | DIRTSPORTSWORLD.COM
Rat Sult said he just wanted a place for off-road friends and fans to hang out, see some cool products and race cars. The event was held on a nice warm Saturday. The parking lot was full of cars. Music could be heard from a live band. Robby Gordon’s SST semi could be seen along with a multitude of vendors four rows deep. On display in front of Robby’s semi was the unicorn of the Speed side-by-side known as El Jefe which gained a lot of attention. Social media superstar and off-road racer Blake Wilkey was also at the event speaking with vendors and stopping to pose for an occasional fan photo.
OFF-ROAD NIGHTS DIRT LIFESTYLE
Over 75 vendors and aftermarket companies were represented from suspension to tire manufactures sunglasses and apparel as well. SCORE International was there representing and letting people know about their upcoming races. A multitude of race cars, off-road trucks and vintage cars scattered throughout the venue gave young and old a thrill. Throughout the day a steady flow of around 4500 attendees meandered around the event filled of horsepower and live music. Kanan Road and Old school band kept the venue rocking as people danced while kids played with R/C cars. Overall the event was a great success for the first off-road public get together this year. he dark and densely evergreen covered hills of South Dakota have become iconic throughout history withstanding multiple trials and tribulations between Native Americans, Gold Mining, and the US Government. While it also houses the colossal sculpture of the Nations’ founding presidents to the “Southern Hills” along with numerous National Parks and wildlife reserves, the “Northern Hills” are home to historic Gold Rush-era city Deadwood, and the legendary Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. Since its inception in 1938 on a dirt track with only 9 riders, the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally has evolved into South Dakota’s largest tourism event and the world’s largest motorcycle rally. Thunder can be heard miles away from the sounds of motorcycle enthusiasts, numbering in the hundreds of thousands as they transcend onto Sturgis from across the world.

In the beginning, the rally only occurred for 2 days and hosted a single race in front of a small audience. Most recently, the yearly event spans a total of 10 days, encompassing various motorcycle styled events, group scenic rides, concerts, food and more that bring together people from all walks of life and from around the world. Ultra4 had the blessing to become part of Sturgis Motorcycle Rally as the short course styled race to be held during the week.
Before kicking off the 4900 Can Am UTV main race, Ultra4 racers lined up to start, however, killing off all engines to begin projecting the National Anthem proudly throughout Sturgis as the American flag danced in the wind. A quick readjustment to the stack, led by Race Director JT Taylor, leading the UTVs into a rolling start as engines began to liven up the respectable silence. On the pole to begin the 9 laps ahead of 31 vehicles was Josh Smith alongside Jacob Versey followed behind by Jamie McCoy, substituted by Jason Watts and Pam Hall. Travis Zollinger held the 4th qualified starting position as the UTVs were brought around the first turn of Black Hills Throwdown. As a physical finish race, a driver starting in the back of the group would have to pass every competitor to gain an optimal finishing position.

The attrition began to set in for the UTVs as lap leader and 2nd in points, Josh Smith pulled off the course succumbing to a popped ball joint, costing him the championship. Nonetheless, Ronnie Anderson charged forward and by lap 7 was merely 200 yards behind Jake Versey the new UTV leader. The dog fight between drivers continued as they began coming upon lapped traffic causing both drivers to weave in and out of slower vehicles with only 8 seconds separating the two, who both aimed for the finish line. Ronnie Anderson and Jake Versey were nose-totail raging toward the checkered flag when Jake Versey hastily slowed pace from a drive shaft failure forcing him to limp to the finish. In turn allowing Ronnie Anderson to take the winning podium.
Josh Smith, fresh off his Montana win, took the hole shot immersing his competitors in the lingering trail of dust behind him. This would be the 3rd and final race for the Western Series, where Josh Smith and Jake Versey, both points leaders, separated by only 20 points, would have to battle neck and neck to win over the other for the championship. ANDRETTI UNITED CLAIMS VICTORY AT ARCTIC X PRIX

ndretti United Extreme E came out on top after a titanic battle with championship leaders Rosberg X Racing during Extreme E’s first-ever five-car Final. The Arctic X Prix in Kangerlussuaq, Greenland, provided non-stop action from Shakedown on Friday through the dying moments of the Final. After a thrilling opening round in Al-’Ula, Saudi Arabia, and an epic battle on the beach in Lac Rose, Dakar, Senegal, the pioneering racing series had high expectations to live up to when it arrived in Greenland for the country’s first-ever motorsport event. The unforgiving Arctic X Prix course, combined with the series’ revised sporting format produced some of the most exciting racing yet with the 18 world-class drivers battling not only themselves, but the conditions and various track hazards enroute to the finish line. 42 | DIRTSPORTSWORLD.COM

applying pressure to his fellow World Rallycross Champion and by the time the pair had reached the far corner, it was time for the Rosberg X Racing car to make its move. The 32-year-old went for the wide line into the turn while Hansen defended, inevitably providing him with better exit speed and enabling him to draw alongside his rival. The duo remained door-to-door as they executed several of the course’s larger jumps in similarly exuberant fashion.
The Final race was underway with a great start for Molly Taylor and Sébastien Loeb looked to set up the much-anticipated Rosberg X Racing vs X44 contest that fans had been waiting for. Catie Munnings had other ideas as the Brit used her Hyperdrive to snatch the lead. Sébastien Loeb seized the advantage as the pack raced through the single-file section of the course and past the lake. Catie Munnings attempted to replicate her sensational move on Molly Taylor from earlier in the day, as the pair were side by side through the Super Sector, however the Australian would hang on to second.
The Andretti United Extreme E car would come away from the encounter unscathed, the same could not be said for Rosberg X Racing’s ODYSSEY 21 however, as Johan Kristoffersson ground to a halt having landed too aggressively in his attempt to snatch the lead. A calm and collected Timmy Hansen crossed the line first giving Andretti United Extreme E their first win in the series and putting an end to Rosberg X Racing’s dominant Final form in 2021. Mikaela ÅhlinKottulinsky kept Timmy Hansen honest to claim the runner-up spot, finishing just four seconds behind while Laia Sanz and Carlos Sainz Senior completed the podium with a brilliant comeback drive.
Disaster struck for the luckless X44 squad in the pits, discovering a puncture meaning the right rear wheel needed to be replaced. Sébastien Loeb leapt into action along with his mechanic to get the job done but it would see the team’s hard-earned 19-second advantage diminished to nothing. Timmy Hansen in the Andretti United Extreme E machine emerged from the Switch Zone in the lead, closely followed by Johan Kristoffersson and Mikaela Åhlin-Kottulinsky. Outdoor Motocross Season Championship Winners Crowned Story by: Shaun Ochsner Photos by: Align Media

t has been one heck of a season for the riders in the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship. The season kicked off in Southern California at Fox raceway near San Diego. Dylan Ferrandis surprised everyone by winning the opening round in the 450 class. From then on, the Frenchman would do everything he could to stay ahead of rival Ken Roczen. Ferrandis won the 250 championship during the shortened season in 2020 and was back to do it in the 450 class. Roczen went out and took the overall at the next round in Thunder Valley Colorado. Roczen earned a much-needed sweep. Ferrandis was back on top at High Point even though he didn’t win any races. The season would continue with Ferrandis gaining more points every weekend. The series would return

BRONCO RIPTIDE CONCEPT
The Bronco Riptide is based on the four-door Sasquatch package. It has 35-inch mud terrain tires on 17-inch factory wheels. Several Ford accessories were added to the vehicle including a Bestop mesh Bimini, Yamaha bike rack and Rigid LED lightbar. The Bronco has a prototype custom front bumper. It also comes with electronic locking rear and front axles and a high clearance suspension system featuring custom Bilstein shock absorbers.
Ford is also offering a new Eruption Green color for the Bronco. The company plans to bring back several heritage colors, found on the original Broncos decades ago. Ford says Bronco customers are passionate about their vehicle colors which is part of their reasoning for the heritage offerings. The Eruption Green is a modern take on the Mallard Green that was featured on the first-generation Broncos in the 1970’s.

urfercross is an action sports event that brings the surf and motocross industry together. It was started 22 years ago by Jeremy Albrecht. Albrecht was a motocross tuner for many of the top pros like James Stewart. He then became a team manager for Joe Gibbs Racing (JGRMX). Being from California, he wanted blend of the California lifestyle of surfing and moto into one event. With one year off due to shutdowns on gatherings in 2020, Surfercross would come back in 2021 bigger than ever. The event is held during the week to avoid weekend crowds at the motocross track and the beach. Current and former pro motocross racers as well as their counter parts on the surf side are paired up in teams. Notable moto crossers David Pingree, Jeff Matiasevich, Robbie Maddison, Colton Udall and Jeremy McGrath participate in the event. Over on the surfside, pros such as Brooke Daigneault, Nathan Fletcher, Jacob Szekely and Kalani Rob. Previous former pros that have competed in Surfercross include James Stewart and Sunny Garcia.

MOTO MEETS SURF
The Perris Motocross track in Perris, California was the back drop for this year’s moto competition. Each moto would consist of 12 laps. Each team would alternate laps while handing off a bracelet to their teammate. David Pingree and Nathan Fletcher would be on top in points after the moto side with Jeff Matiasevich and Tristan Aiwohi along with the teams of Corbin Hayes and Brandon Tipton trailing. Day number two would take us to the worldfamous surf spot of San Onofre, California. Not going to say the waves were great, but intermittent sets of decent waves would roll in as teams of two would paddle out. The pro surfers would shine in their element as they shred the wave for scores while judge observed. Some Moto crossers would struggle just to stand and stay in the wave but the athlete in them would adapt and overcome. Carson Mumford shocked many with his mad skills on a board. Robbie Maddison and Dakota Tedder also seemed to catch on. Through multiple heats, it came down to the final session with Jeremy McGrath and a little
help from teammate Jacob Szekely with a good shove. Completely allowed under the rules. With some good sets rolling in, McGrath made it to the podium in second. Threetime surfer cross champion Josh Sleigh with teammate and Moto crosser Carson Mumford would take the event win. Second place would go to Jeremy McGrath and Jacob Szekely with third going to the team of Surfer Kalani Robb and Motocross racer Dakota tedder. When everything was all said and done, the end result was a gathering of greats in the action sports industry and two sports sharing the much-loved California lifestyle.

The weather in these parts is still summerlike and that’s exactly what the riders got. High humidity and high heat. The Hard Enduro events are purposely made to be intense. The format features rough rocky terrain. The Red Bull Tennessee Knockout event got started Saturday night with a straight-rhythm. The straight rhythm is exactly what it sounds like. A long straight track with multiple whoops and big jumps. Billy Bolt came out on top, setting the tone for the rest of the weekend. Sunday morning, the riders would go head to head on a hot lap qualifier to determine starting order for the first two knockout races. 60 riders would be whittled down to 30, then down to 15 for the final event. gate king
secure the tailgate Story: Dave Arnold Photos: Dave Arnold & Gate King
Every truck person is always looking for the next new cool gadget to add to their ride! We have found that gadget. The Gate King tail gate adjuster is made by Castel USA. It is the perfect solution to adjusting your tailgate. The Gate King is perfect for hauling a motorcycle or two. Moto riders are constantly looking for ways to extend their tailgate and secure items from sliding out. Many riders have stories where they have lost their gear bag that slid out or whatever they are hauling because the tie down used to hold the tailgate up slipped.
58 | DIRTSPORTSWORLD.COM
The Gate King system even allows for clearance with short tongue trailers . Gate King has eight adjustable positions. An added bonus- if you put your tailgate at a 45° angle it could help save gas.
GATE KING
You want to first open the box and verify the Gate King unit the fits your vehicle model. Gate King makes several versions for many different truck brands and model years. When doing an install, we always confirm that all the parts are there which wasn’t a problem.
Start with one side and remove the cable that holds up the tailgate. Remove the bolts on the tailgate and the side of the bed that were securing the cable. The Gate King parts are as strong as your stronger than the OEM tailgate cable you are replacing.
that secured it from the passenger side and repeat the process from the driver side. The installation is very easy. It only took us 20 minutes from start to finish.
We chose to start with the left side. Grab the Gate King part the corresponds with the application for the driver side of the vehicle. Secure the bolts in the proper mounting holes that are on the vehicle OEM attachments. Once this is in place we move to the passenger side of the vehicle. There is a large hose clamp secured around the pivot point on the right side i.e. passenger side of the vehicle. Remove the cable and the bolts DIRTSPORTSWORLD.COM | 59
TECH
There is a very small learning curve to learn while operating the ratcheting system. Open the tailgate all the way. You’ll see small metal rods attached to the Gate King. If you flip these little metal rods, there are the levers that puts it in the ratchet mode. This allows you to put the tailgate up in multiple angles to accommodate your load. To disengage you could either manually flip the rod or close the tailgate all the way and it which puts back to ratchet free movement. The Gate King has a 36-month warranty on all parts and will not cause damage to your OEM vehicle parts. Another big bonus is that it’s made right here in the USA, by enthusiasts in the motocross industry. Happy Hauling! For more Information: https://www.castel-usa.com Gate King

CHAPPY’S PIT STOP
PARABLE OF TALENTS Words: Steve Hanson
I
recently got caught up in the Netflix series Formula 1 Drive to Survive. It is about the drama and characters of F1 racing. Lewis Hamilton, the most accomplished F1 driver of all time, stated that when he is on the starting grid, he thinks about the sacrifices his parents made to get him the opportunity to race. He marinates on their sacrifices and how he cannot squander the opportunities away. His attitude reminds me of the parable of the talents. Matthew 25:14-30 niv “Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his property to them. To one he gave five talents of money and another two talents, and to another one talent, each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey. The man who had received the five talents went at once and put his money to work and gained five more. So also, the one with the two talents gained two more. But the man who had received the one talent went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money. After a long time, the master returned and settled accounts with his servants. The men who made the most of the talents and doubled them the master said, “Well done, good and faithful servants! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!” The man who buried the talent because he was afraid, “His master said, ‘You wicked, lazy servant! You should have at least put the money in the bank so I could have gotten a little interest on it.’ With that he threw the servant out and took the talent to the one who had 10. 62 | DIRTSPORTSWORLD.COM
Two of the servants showed that they were thankful for the opportunity to represent and went all out for their master and produced. The other one squandered the opportunity and ended up losing everything in the end. The point is God’s good stewards have something to show for their diligence; they produce as evidence of their faithfulness; they do not squander it away. What are you doing with the talent God has given you? Do you think of Him as just a spectator or do you treat Him as you would your greatest sponsor? Once you gain the trust of a title sponsor do you forget about them? No, you continue to work on the relationship, contacting them to cultivate a meaningful relationship. Letting them know how much you appreciate them and what you are doing to represent them well. The number of impressions you are making for them (not ourselves). Every chance you get you give a testimony on how their products/ service is helping. How they have changed the outcome of your racing efforts. The same is true in our relationship with Christ. It is ongoing; it is not automatic nor is it a safety net to catch us when we fall like an insurance policy to cash in when our time is up. Just because we are “saved” does not mean that our work of pursuing/representing Him is finished. Colossians 3:23-24 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. Follow @rfc_dirtsportministry
