The Disability Tax Credit will very likely be available to a family member supporting a person who has Alzheimer’s disease. Such a credit would likely be able to reduce the tax burden of the employed family member supporting the Alzheimer’s sufferer.

Alzheimer ’s disease is a progressive disease of the brain characterized by memory loss, disturbances in reasoning, language and perception. Problems of memory, particularly for recent events (short-term memory) are common early in the course of the disease.

Although the causes of Alzheimer’s are not fully understood, scientists believe there are genetic risk factors for the disease. They also hypothesize that it is caused by an increase in the production or accumulation of a specific protein (beta-amyloid protein) in the brain that leads to nerve cell death.

The main risk factor for developing Alzheimer’s is increased age, and statisticians suggest that as many as 50% of persons over the age of 85 have the disease.
