You could qualify for the Disability Tax Credit if you or a family member has a bladder disorder that has lasted for over a year and affected your own or a family member’s ability to carry out the normal activities of daily living.

Although millions of Canadians suffer from bladder problems, few people realize just how prevalent they are. The term “bladder problem covers a range of disorders, some of which cause pain, urinary incontinence or other complications that can have a dramatic effect on quality of life, and importantly, the ability to carry out the activities of daily living.

Symptoms of bladder disorders include: frequent urination, difficulty or pain with urination and or mild to severe bladder pain. Causes of bladder disorders run the gamut from infections to accidents, genetic conditions and stress.

There is no question that a serious bladder disorder will affect an individual’s ability to carry out the normal activities of daily living. Treatment often includes bed rest, anti-inflammatory medicines, antibiotics and a diet that abstains from caffeine and other known bladder irritants. In serious cases, surgery is also used to alleviate symptoms, and in the case of kidney stones, ultrasound is used to break up the stones.
