Bowel disorders and Disability Tax C
You could qualify for the Disability Tax Credit if you or a family member has a bowel disorder that has lasted for over a year and affected your own or a family member’s ability to carry out the normal activities of daily living.
Millions of Canadians suffer from bowel problems and disorders. Medical researchers divide the disorders into two types:
Functional bowel disorders where the bowel looks normal but doesn’t work properly are the most common. They include irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and constipation. The primary causes for these common disorders are many: eating a poor or low-fiber diet; not enough exercise; traveling or other changes in routine; stress, certain medicines (especially antidepressants, iron pills and narcotics).
Structural bowel disorders where the bowel does not look normal and also does not work properly include hemorrhoids, anal fissures, perianal abscesses, diverticular disease, colon polyps and colitis. Depending on the severity of the bowel disorder, it can easily impact one’s quality of life and the ability to carry out the activities of daily living.
