To be eligible for the Disability Tax Credit , you must have a severe and prolonged physical or mental impairment. Form 2201, the Disability Tax Credit Certificate , includes the following disability sections: vision, speaking, hearing, walking, elimination, feeding, dressing, and performing the mental functions of everyday living.
Qualifying for Disability Tax Credit for Vision Impairment A patient can qualify for the vision section if they are considered blind, even with the use of corrective lenses or medication. To be considered blind the visual acuity in both eyes must be 20/200 or less (6/60) using the Snellen Chart (or equivalent).
Qualifying for Disability Tax Credit for Speaking Impairment For patients with speaking impairments, either a medical doctor or speech language pathologist is suitable for filling out this form. You are considered markedly restricted in speaking if at least 90% of the time you are unable to speak or it takes you an inordinate amount of time to speak.
Qualifying for Disability Tax Credit for Other Impairments Walking impairments mean that it takes an inordinate amount of time to walk even with appropriate therapy, medication, and devices. These devises include canes and walkers for example.
Qualifying for Disability Tax Credit for Other Impairments Similar to the speaking impairment, the other impairments follow the same basic guidelines. To refresh your memory, this means that you are markedly restricted to perform these functions, either all or most of the time (at least 90% of the time). This includes being unable to perform these actions/activities, or them requiring an inordinate amount of time(three times the normal time) to complete.
