What is Elimination (Bowl or Bladder Functions)?

Elimination is defined as issues with urinating and passing stools. This includes unwanted passage of urine or fecal matter called incontinence. These disorders include problems with voluntary urination or passing bowl movements. This is caused when there are problems with nerve or muscle function.


Symptoms of Elimination

Some symptoms and causes of urinary problems include damage to the nervous system, poor health, vaginal child birth, overactive bladder, holding urine in too long, and difficulty controlling sphincter muscles. Some symptoms and causes of bowel problems include diarrhea, constipation, damage to the nervous system, poor health, rectal prolapse (when the rectum protrudes into the anus), and rectocele (when the rectum bulges into the vagina).


Available Treatments for Elimination (Bowl or Bladder Functions)

Some common treatments include changing your diet by increasing your fiber intake, exercising to strengthen sphincter muscles, taking medications such as fiber supplements to control bowel dysfunction, training programs that train the bowels and bladder that set a regular schedule for using the toilet, undergoing electrical stimulation, and undergoing surgery in rare cases.


Eligibility Criteria for Disability Tax Credit for Elimination

A person is considered eligible if they are unable to take an inordinate amount of time to personally manage bowel or bladder functions and this is their situation for at least 90% of the time.
