Newsletter April 2017 Disabled Living has a Trustee in a High Place! Last week I was delighted be invited to the ceremony for the Installation of Kui Man Gerry Yeung OBE, DL as The High Sheriff of Greater Manchester. Gerry, has been Disabled Living’s President for the last 10 years and has brought a wealth of knowledge and expertise to our Management Board. Gerry was born in China and came to Manchester as a teenager with his family. He completed his education in the UK and joined the family business, Yang Sing Restaurant at its inception. The success of the restaurant and its great popularity gave him an opportunity to become part of the community of Manchester. Gerry has been actively involved in the commercial, educational, charitable and cultural life of the city of Manchester for many years and was President of the Manchester Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Gerry’s networks are vast and over the years he has introduced me to a wide range of influential people to assist me to develop services and support the long term strategic vision I have for Disabled Living. Gerry, very kindly hosts Disabled Living’s Annual General meetings at the Yang Sing, Cathay in the Trafford Centre, Manchester and I am sure those of you who have attended our AGM, will agree the food is of the finest quality – a little like Gerry!

Equipment such as a raised toilet seat, commode, bath board, chair raisers and more. Participants will be asked where they received their equipment from, whether they still use it, and if they use anything else instead of the equipment to help them. Do you have difficulties transporting children safely in vehicles? Would you like to help develop an innovative device to help carers transport children safely in vehicles, trains and planes? Klip-2-lift needs you! The Klip-2-Lift is a new type of moving and handling device to assist people with limited mobility and consists of a trendy waistcoat that can be worn throughout the day, allowing attachment to a hoist when needed for transfers more conveniently than traditional slings. Jo Webb, an occupational therapy lecturer from The University of Salford has developed the Klip-2-lift together with Barbara Ackley, previously from Disabled Living “Style Centre”. They are developing the device to assist with transfers in and out of a swimming pool for hydrotherapy and to allow easier and safer transport in any vehicles for individuals who need extra support or may have challenging behaviours when being transported. WE NEED YOUR EXPERTISE and would like to invite you to attend a group discussion at the University of Salford to demonstrate the Klip-2-Lift and “be creative” in sharing your experiences to design an innovative Klip-2-Swim garment and Klip-2-Travel safety harness. The group will meet at: The University of Salford Tuesday 23rd and Thursday 25th May 2017 at 1.00 til 3.00, you will receive reimbursement for your travel and will also receive Love to Shop vouchers for your time and experience.
If you would like to attend, please contact Jo Webb on 0161 295 0701 or j.webb@salford.ac.uk and together we can develop something exciting and innovative to improve travel safety for everyone who needs assistance. Looking forward to hearing from you!
