BBUK Symposium 2017 Roundup Our Annual Symposium at Bolton USN Arena, gave us the opportunity to meet up with both new and regular delegates

It was wonderful to see so many people attending this annual event. This year attracted 150 delegates, who travelled from all over the UK. We had a variety of high profile speakers covering a variety of topics and we would like to thank all our speakers for supporting us at Bladder and Bowel UK, in delivering this year’s programme. Each year we offer three educational streams at the symposium, these being, Adult Bladder, Adult Bowel and Children and Young People Bladder and Bowel.

This year we had a wide offering of lectures covering Faecal incontinence and Evacuation Disorders, Managing Patients with functional Bowel Disorders, Pelvic Floor Assessment and Treatment in Bladder Incontinence, Wetting and Soiling in Schools - Who's Responsibility, Trial Without Catheter Project, Living with Mitrofanoff, Managing Skin Care of People with Bladder and Bowel Problems, Parents Perspective (living with a child that soils), What's New in Continence Product Selection, Constipation in Children and Young people.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the companies who attended the exhibition and who continue to support the work and events of Bladder and Bowel UK .

We would not be able to put on these type of events without their valued support .

We are always pleased when other charities colleagues from the Bladder and Bowel arena agree to attend the Symposium.

This year, 32 stands exhibited on the day.

The Symposium allow clinicians, not only the time to choose and attend lectures, but to also have the opportunity to visit the extensive exhibition, display which allows all a wonderful opportunity of updating their knowledge and awareness of resources and information that are available.

The exhibition was a hive of activity, enabling delegates and exhibitors to network together, looking at new products, reviewing current products and update knowledge on what is available to help treat and manage people with bladder and bowel problems.

Thanks from the team at BBUK to our volunteers, David and Gill for helping with registration. We would also like to extend our thanks to Mark Birbeck who was released from his place of work with the Meat Hygiene Service, to volunteer his photography services to Disabled Living Charity for the day and to the staff at Bolton USN Arena.

The aim of the awards is to recognise excellence in bowel care

Bladder and Bowel UK - Bowel Award Winner Nurse-Led Hypnotherapy for IBS Bowel Care Award 2017 Sponsored by Coloplast Helen Bremner was presented with this years Bowel Care Award, for her work for patients with IBS. She is a nurse hypnotherapist, with a colorectal/surgical background, devising an IBS-specific generic hypnotherapy programme individualising for patient-specific problems. She has also created a training package for other professionals, enabling them to deliver her programme (two study days or a correspondence course with assessment for approved practitioner status). Helen also provides a ten CD/MP3 and an e-book package for patients to provide self care. (Named ‘IBS4IBS’).

Bladder and Bowel UK – Bowel Care Award, aims to recognise an individual or team, who is able to demonstrate that have made a difference to the care of their patients’ or clients within bowel care.

Abu Dhabi Pelvic Floor Weekend Our Paediatric Continence Specialist, June Rogers MBE, was honoured to be invited to present at the joint ICCS/WCNR conference in Abu Dhabi last month. June presented papers on neuropathic bowel care - looking at bowel management from birth to adulthood and discussed the range of treatment options available.

June also found herself on the programme co-chairing 2 sessions which although daunting at first, was a actually a valuable experience.

The conference was also a great opportunity to network with international colleagues, the highlight of which was meeting Dr Alberto Pena, who is a world renown surgeon regarding the treatment of children born with Ano-rectal malformations, and who is still practising at the age of 76 years!

The helpline is available Monday to Friday, 9am – 4pm, we are also contactable by email .

So who contacts us?

General public and their relatives/carers. Health and Social Care Professionals and other groups such as teachers/assistants and so on. We may also be contacted by other organisations such as charities and support groups.

Duration of calls we receive?

We receive a large number of calls, each day to both the helpline or via our email service.

Enquires may range from a quick question being answered, but more often, enquiries to the helpline are more detailed, requiring us to dedicate time with the caller, to go through their concerns or query.

Why do people contact us?

General public contact us for a number of reasons. Some may request information on continence product’s, aids and appliances. Some are unaware of the existence of local bladder and bowel services and are surprised when we inform them that things can be done to treat, improve or better manage their situation. We always try to suggest they present for assessment and to signpost or put them in touch with their local services , so they can access the help they need locally. We may also signpost to other charities or organisations .

We receive calls from a variety of Health and Social Care Professionals. Others may contact us for advice, such schools, nursing and residential homes, other charities to name but a few. This is may be for advice on latest products, toilet training, national guidance or regarding the training and events that we offer .

“Look Good feel Good Award” 2017 ACA Conference Monday 23rd May

Reminder to companies Don’t be shy, why not consider entering new products into this year’s Look Good Feel Good Award at this years ACA conference.

The winner will be announced at the Gala Dinner on Monday 23rd May which is being hosted at Belfast City Hall.

Disabled Living has a Trustee in a High Place!

As you are aware Bladder and Bowel UK is a service of Disabled Living

Last week I was delighted be invited to the ceremony for the Installation of Kui Man Gerry Yeung OBE, DL as The High Sheriff of Greater Manchester. Gerry, has been Disabled Living’s President for the last 10 years and has brought a wealth of knowledge and expertise to our Management Board. Gerry was born in China and came to Manchester as a teenager with his family. He completed his education in the UK and joined the family business, Yang Sing Restaurant at its inception. The success of the restaurant and its great popularity gave him an opportunity to become part of the community of Manchester.

Gerry has been actively involved in the commercial, educational, charitable and cultural life of the city of Manchester for many years and was President of the Manchester Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Gerry’s networks are vast and over the years he has introduced me to a wide range of influential people to assist me to develop services and support the long term strategic vision I have for Disabled Living. Gerry, very kindly hosts Disabled Living’s Annual General meetings at the Yang Sing, Cathay in the Trafford Centre, Manchester and I am sure those of you who have attended our AGM, will agree the food is of the finest quality – a little like Gerry!
